| Posted: 29 Oct 2007 10:34 PM CDT DWO Mailbag - October 2007 As October draws to a close, it's time to delve through the DWO Mailbag. Paul Shawbury of London; UK asks: My son (David) and I are planning on going to our first Doctor Who convention next year. We were wondering if you could tell us what kind of things we can expect there? Also, where can we meet you guys? Love the site - we both visit it multiple times on a daily basis, and you are the #1 stop for Doctor Who News. Paul & David. Hi guys - No matter which Doctor Who convention you go to, you can expect a really fun day out You will get the opportunity to meet stars from the show, and maybe get them to sign merchandise for you. You can also watch them partake in interviews, where often, the crowd get a chance to ask the questions from time to time. There is also an opportunity to buy merchandise on the day as well as meeting fellow fans of the show (both new and old). DWO often get invited along to such events, and have a stand where you can view the site, as well as getting interviewed for the DWO Whocast podcast. Paul (co-editor) will be at the Dimensions event, and I will be at the Memorabilia event this November in Birmingham. Look forward to seeing you! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Damian Brooks; UK asks: Hello! What happened about The Web of Fear then which was reported on the website? Is it still believed that it might have been found? Surely worthy of another news story or an update seeing as it was so sensationally reported a few weeks back. Damian. Hi Damian - The Web of Fear rumour is sadly looking like a false alarm. DWO received information from 3 reliable sources, but unfortunately it appears to have reached a dead end. DWO do not usually report these kind of news items, owing to the sensitivity behind lost stories, but we honestly believed this story had some truth to it. I guess if there is any truth, we may not find out for some time to come. As a news and information site we received a huge amount of support from fans thanking us for reporting the news. We also received some negative feedback stating that we should never have run the story in the first place. DWO is a Doctor Who news and information site, and to withhold news defeats the point of what we do. We will treat such stories in the future a bit differently though, and we intend to take all comments (both positive and negative) on board. On a more positive note, DWO are planning to launch a Missing episode campaign, of which full details can be found on the site in weeks to come. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Andy Rowland of Ipswich; UK asks: Hi guys, your podcasts are amazing, and I wanted to know if you ever plan to have any DWO WHOCAST video podcasts at all? Your ability to get high-profile who stars on the show is tremendous, and I eagerly await each episode as it becomes available. Andy. Hello Andy - Many thanks for your kind comments about the DWO WhoCast. Funny you should ask about the video podcasts, as we have just added our first, which is a sneek peek at the Davros Collection trailer. Both myself and Paul will be producing some more great video podcasts in the new year, and hope to cover some Doctor Who events on them too. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucy Brewer of Chicago; USA asks: Hey Seb & Paul! DWO is my number one stop for who, and I wanted to thank you all for providing me with such an ace resource. Im hoping I may win one of your competitions in the future, as I see fellow americans have won in the past. My question is, how long has the site been running? Peace & Love, Lucy. Hey Lucy - Thanks for your lovely comments about the site, as always they mean a lot to us, and make all the hard work and effort more than worthwhile. In answer to your question, the site started in 1996 under the name of 'Doctor Who: The REGENERATIVE website'. Like today, we provided Doctor Who News and Merchandise information, but that was about it. In 2001, we rebranded as 'Doctor Who Online' and our hit-rate soared from 500 a day to 3000. Now in 2007 we are getting in excess of 10,000+ per day, and have a forum membership of 13,000 strong. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Cowell; UK asks: 'It must take you a while to make the games - how do you know what aspects of an unaired episode to use in the games? Do you base it off trailers and hope the plot of the game is relative to the episode? Or do you get your info from official sources?' Hi Tom - To be completely honest, there is a lot of guesswork involved. We take information that is already known about an episode, and try to formulate the game around that. The trailers help as they give us idea / character info of which we can use in the games. VORTEXTRA has been a complete success, and the good news is it'll be back for the Christmas episode. If you have anything you would like us to include in the DWO Mailbag - E-mail us here. [Source: DWO] | ||

| Astrid Perth Isn't It?? Or is it... Posted: 29 Oct 2007 10:20 PM CDT Turn away now if you don't want to know the big reveal for this Christmas' special. It'll have you spinning around... Remember the character Kylie's playing? Astrid Perth, the waitress who helps David Tennant's Doctor solve the mystery aboard the Titanic? No, not the mystery as to how that awful single stayed at number one for so long, though to be honest, when Celine sings, You're here, there's nothing to fear , those of us who had endured those shrill tones all summer were screaming, You're lying you swiss / french / canadian queen of torment ballads, you're lying!!! If you stay here and sing another note you should be very afraid Sorry, where was I? Ah yes, Astrid. Funny things anagrams aren't they? And Welsh surnames eh? Did I mention that Russell T Davies, the series producer and Dr Who demi-god was Welsh? No? Well he is. Don't worry (for those of you for whom the picture on the right hand side wasn't enough of a give away), I won't spill the beans any more here. Kasterborous has the full skinny (http://www.kasterborous.com/news.asp?id=1237) if you want to know more... All right then. Who's got a pot noodle handy? | ||

| Posted: 29 Oct 2007 11:28 AM CDT WhoWatch: Location Report DWO are please to unveil a brand new addition to the news section; WhoWatch. WhoWatch will be an occasional, spoiler-free(ish) location report, from our team of Doctor Who fans that happen to be near location filming spots for Doctor Who. We will not publish any plot revealing images, nor will we publish reports that give away information relating to a forthcoming episode. The segment will operate as a teaserfor the upcoming series of Doctor Who. So without further ado, we present the first WhoWatch: Location: Margam Park; Cardiff; UK Report: As soon as we heard about the Margam Park shooting on Friday, a group of us from Cardiff took the afternoon off to head across to the location. From the side of the house, and on the way to the shoot location (which was around the back of the manor), we came across a prop. This was a sign titled "Rattigan Academy" [Image 1]. Despite it looking pretty authentic on the picture, it was very flimsey and made up of bits of aluminium and MDF. When we arrived at the location centre, there were already a small group of fans and children gathered waiting patiently. When asked, the production crew were (as ever) pretty coy as to what would be happening, so we decided to hang around until the park closed. We spotted a group of of extras dressed in bright red tracksuits, leading to speculation that the story was to be set in a training ground. [Image 2]. We also spotted the production crew testing out a smoke generating machine [Image 3], but were assured that no outisde shooting would take place today. After what seemed like hours of watching extras being bused in and out, a car eventually drove up, containg David Tennant himself. He was waving at the fans from the back window, and positively beaming at us all. He spent some time chatting with the fans, and posing for pictures. [Image 4]. We hung around the Margam Park until closing time (5:00pm), before eventually deciding to leave. On the way out, we could see lights and flashes from one of the upstairs rooms where presumably the action was taking place. With daylight fading, we could see the insides of the house a little more clearly, so I snapped a picture of, what I presume to be, a prop that was a backdrop in one of the downstairs rooms. [Image 5]. This is entirely speculation, as "the prop" may well be nothing at all to do with Doctor Who, but the image on the backdrop potrays what appears to be a space scene with aliens in large helmets flying around on scooters with flames shooting out. Sontarans? Yours Truly, The Watcher. [To view images - check out the DWO News page] [Source: DWO] | ||

| Posted: 29 Oct 2007 03:35 AM CDT I can today confirm that Torchwood will be heading onto HD-DVD and Blu Ray disks sometime early 2008. The series, which was filmed and broadcast in High Definition, was initially touted for a HD release, but this failed to materialise because 2 Entertain (the home entertainment arm of the BBC) couldn't decide which format - HD-DVD or Blu Ray - to support. Now, following the likes of Planet Earth and Robin Hood the series will be released on both formats, as a a complete series one package (presumably around January or February time to tie in with the launch of series two on BBC Two). I have no information on whether Warner will release the HD boxsets over in the USA, or elsewhere around the world. The boxset will have the same content as the standard definition edition, which goes on sale November 19th with an RRP of £54.99. No price tag has been attached to the HD edition. More news on this as and when it comes in. | ||
