Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News |
| Posted: 10 Jan 2008 12:21 PM CST The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine went on sale today, and it has some very interesting news on Titan's forthcoming Torchwood Magazine. The publication will be edited by a chap called Simon Hugo, who tells DWM "The first issue includes exclusive interviews with John Barrowman and James Marsters about Episode 1; Millennium FX and The Mill talk us through some of their work on the new series; and Freema Agyeman reveals her innermost thoughts about Filofaxes, falling over and her first kiss!"
"Meanwhile," Hugo continues, "Chris Chibnall writes the first in a series of exclusive new columns, and there'll also be a 10-page comic strip, starting with a story written by Transformers legend Simon Furman" There's also confirmation that the magazine will be released on January 24th, and - at 68 pages - costs £3.75. The magazine's website expands on the news, confirming that SL Gallant will be drawing the comic strip. Future comic strips will be created by folks like Ian Edgington and Brian Williamson. It's thought that Titan will collect the comic strips together in graphic novel form at some point. They'll also be previews of episodes three, four, five and six within issue one. You can see a (rather small) picture of the issues cover above. Back to DWM for a moment, and this latest issue also features a preview of Torchwood's second series, with comments from all the major cast and crew. Next issue the magazine talks to actress Freema Agyeman about her role in Doctor Who's spin-off series. Doctor Who Magazine issue 391 is in shops now, priced £3.99. It's worth every penny, honest!* *Especially for the rather grumpy Clive Swift interview!
| What Americans are missing out on.... Posted: 10 Jan 2008 12:15 PM CST Hold on, Rob's getting ready to go on a rant... Question: Who made $25 Billion (US) last year, and is keeping over 24 million Americans from watching Torchwood the way it was filmed? Answer: Comcast, America's largest cable provider, that's who. If you have Comcast, and many of us do, you won't be able to see Torchwood in HD, because Comcast refuses to carry HDNet, everywhere in the US except for some odd reason, Houston, Texas. Not to knock BBC America, they're truly awesome, but they are not as of yet a High Definition broadcaster, so not only do they edit Torchwood for language, but they also have to chop down the actual audio and video quality as well as aspect ratio to be compatible with the Standard Definition (NTSC) televisions in the United States... Bottom line, folks with Comcast aren't just missing all of the picture, but all of the quality and sound as well. HDNet provides Torchwood in HD to both the US and Canada, and will reportedly begin showing Series 2 in all its 1080i, 5.1 Surround Sound glory on February 11th. If you have Comcast, join me in contacting them and demanding HDNet on your cable dial. OK I'm off my soapbox now... :) | ||

The full report reads: "Torchwood producer-writer Chris Chibnall has been appointed showrunner on the UK version of Law & Order. As showrunner, Chibnall will be responsible for the creative direction of the series and be its executive producer. ITV has ordered 13 episodes of Law & Order: London from independent production company Kudos, which will produce it based on scripts from the original US show. The broadcaster's director of drama, Laura Mackie, told Broadcast that despite being based on original US scripts, "Law & Order: London will look and feel very British, glossy, dynamic and with the style and energy Kudos brings to all of its drama". The series will be produced in conjunction with Wolf Films - the production company of series creator Dick Wolf - and NBC Universal." Chibnall has worked on a number of past Kudos productions, including "Life on Mars". There's no word yet on if this new role will prevent Chibnall from taking part in future series of Torchwood.

| Posted: 09 Jan 2008 10:56 PM CST Laura Crane Trust appeal Both David Tennant and Catherine Tate have appeared in a video for the Laura Crane Trust. The Laura Crane Trust is a youth cancer charity dedicated to helping children and teenagers suffering from cancer related illnesses. Doctor Who star Catherine Tate is a patron for the charity and together with David Tenannt, recently recorded a video (whilst on the set of recording Doctor Who Series Four) which can be seen on the charity trust's website. Unfortunately some fans have ripped the video and put in on YouTube. This is a cruel way of denying possible donations to a charity that really needs your help. Only a few hundred people have viewed the video on the trusts website, whereas over 50,000 viewed it on YouTube, with no way of knowing how to donate to the charity. Imagine if each of those viewers donated just &ound;1. DWO would like to ask our visitors to watch the video on the trusts official website as well as their online charity DVD and donate whatever you can - even if it is just &ound;1. | Posted: 09 Jan 2008 08:48 PM CST The BBC have put a preview selection of clips from Torchwood Up Close on their YouTube site. A kind of online version of cast and crew video diaries, rather than a behind the scenes affair like Confidential or Declassified. Here you can see such delights as the torrential rain we get here in Cardiff, John's reaction to seeing him 'done' on Dead Ringers, a brief glimpse at the new boardroom set and mucho clowning around. They clearly have far too much fun ..... Apologies to anyone outside the UK, if you cant see this, I will try and find another version that you have access to as the day goes on. However, the ludicrously talented James Moran, reports on his blog that you will be able to see Torchwood on HDnet - thought to be full, uncut versions! And Naoko, yes, Cardiff's weather is ridiculous, isn't it? I mean, I am writing this at my desk at 8:52am and its still dark!!! I am blaming the rift. | ||
