| Posted: 11 Jan 2008 06:31 PM CST People The Sun reports that David Jason has been approached for a Doctor Who role, but was unable to accept because of his contract with ITV. The Daily Star writes that David Tennant has been "unsettled" by the attentions of an overeager fan; the story is also reported by MSN and Digital Spy. The Daily Telegraph cites Billie Piper as the prime example of "thoroughly nice people" in an article on being nice and its drawbacks. Merchandise The Doctor... | ||

| Posted: 11 Jan 2008 07:02 AM CST Originally titled "Mad Bitch Stalks Tennant", I felt that the tale of a slightly eccentric lady stalking David Tennant should be treated slightly more sensitively, lest the lady herself or even Doctor Who himself should be reading... A tabloid newspaper reports that the lady has followed David Tennant to Stratford-upon-Avon where the Daily Star claims David Tennant is working on Hamlet. As it's January and production doesn't wrap on Doctor Who for at least 3 months, this is slightly... | ||

| Posted: 11 Jan 2008 06:05 AM CST With all the hype regarding Torchwood's return to BBC Two next Wednesday, it's easy to forget that in little over two weeks the show will also be returning to BBC America - to the delight of many American Woodies! To celebrate the return, BBC America's Torchwood page has been updated with new content, including photos and video clips! If you click here you'll get access to a number of new behind the scenes images, which feature James Marsters - the key guest star of episode one, "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang". There's also an exclusive clip from the episode, which sees Marster's character, Captain John Hart, realise that life is about to get a hell of a lot more explosive... It also features the return of Ianto's favourite toy, his stop watch! Fangirls, calm down... Visit this page, and click on the "Video" section. Torchwood returns to BBC America on "Supernatural" Saturday 26th January, at 9pm. | ||

| Posted: 11 Jan 2008 03:28 AM CST Obviously, there's something in the nature of Doctor Who writers - old New Adventures writers, particularly - that makes them want to get up on stage and pretend to be amusing. As some of you may know, I ran a comedy night in London during 2006, and even tried MCing until I realised I was shit at it and ran away in a fit of self-loathing; Simon Messingham is part of a stand-up double-act that can occasionally be glimpsed on late-night television; and even Mark Gatiss is allegedly some sort of comic performer. Our ranks have now been joined by Andrew Cartmel, the last script editor of "hand-made" Doctor Who and the man whose (occasional) vision for the programme's future made the New Adventures possible, who this week became an entrant in the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year competition. The appearance of the name "Andrew Cartmel" in the comedy pages of Time Out was a surprise, although I assumed it had to be the "real" one, since there was a paragraph about the gig on his Wikipedia page. The kind of paragraph that you just know must have been added by the subject of the entry. He didn't do too well, to be honest. He seemed to mumble his way through most of his set, and - always a problem with new comedians, this - his material was neither fish nor flesh, not raucous enough for the "will only laugh at nob-gags" part of the audience and not quite interesting enough for the clever people. In fact, given that we know him to be in the intellectual top 5% of Doctor Who authors, there was the terrible sense of a man talking down to the crowd for fear that they might not understand him otherwise. I considered introducing myself to him afterwards, but decided against it, (a) because I've no idea if my name would mean anything to him and (b) because I was one of the judges. My harshness in scoring can be considered payback for Warlock, so now we're even. Fortunately, he's not the sort of comedian who attacks members of the audience from the stage. This has always been a problem for me, since I tend to go to comedy clubs on my own, which basically means that I might as well have a lightning-rod strapped to my face: any comic who wants to do his "and what's your name, sir?" schtick will just naturally home in on me. You can imagine how this might have worked with Cartmel. 'And what's your name, sir?' 'Lawrence.' 'And what do you do for a living, Lawrence?' 'I have a career that's entirely your fault.' However, nothing remotely like this actually happened. | ||
