| Posted: 14 Oct 2008 10:49 AM CDT At some point during 2009 2Entertain (the commercial DVD arm of BBC Worldwide) will release a brand spanking new Doctor Who DVD - "The Black Guardian Trilogy" which will collect together three adventures from the 1983 season, starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. These three stories are "Mawdryn Undead", "Terminus" and "Enlightenment". + [Slight SPOILERS regarding an upcoming SJA episode...] Fans already familiar with the adventures will know that upcoming SJA guest star Nicholas Courtney features in "Mawdryn Undead" reprising his iconic role of former Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, now retired from UNIT and working as a school teacher at a very private boy's school. An extra feature on the "Mawdryn Undead" disc will be the rather exciting and exclusive new drama "Liberty Hall" which sees Courtney reprise his role as Lethbridge-Stewart; talking to a journalist about his adventures with the Doctor over the years. The piece is directed by Brendan Sheppard, who has updated his online curriculum vitae to include the drama. Clips can be seen of the piece here, thanks to Sheppard's 3 minute showreel. The "Enlightenment" adventure has been exclusively recut for the release, to include new CGI scenes and a brand new score. A behind the scenes documentary on the story, entitled "Winner Takes All", has been narrated by another face familiar to SJA fans - Floella Benjamin OBE. Other vintage Doctor Who adventures in the pipeline for release on DVD include a special edition of 1984's "Planet of Fire", 1985's "Attack of the Cybermen" and a twin pack of 1965's "The Rescue" and "The Romans". 1989's "Battlefield" (starring Sylvestor McCoy and Nicholas Courtney) is released December 29th here in the UK. Other regions' dates may vary. | ||

| Posted: 14 Oct 2008 02:00 AM CDT Taking a little longer to go mainstream than expected, rumours of an 11th Doctor played by an actor of non-caucasian origin have surfaced online, via Den of Geek. With Adrian Lester (Spooks), Colin Salmon and other black actors named over that last few weeks, one name stands out among the others. Paterson Joseph - who appeared as Roderick in Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways - has previous form with incoming showrunner Steven Moffat, having played a key role in Jekyll. Joseph has also been... | ||

| Posted: 13 Oct 2008 08:42 PM CDT What are the chances of David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston, Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker, Peter Davison and Tom Baker himself all appearing in a single Doctor Who adventure? Most of us would say pretty low, I think. But, according to the Mirror that's not the case at all. November 14th is Children in Need, and apparently - if we believe a rumour which may account for recent other rumours concerning Mr Tom Baker and Mr Paul McGann - this Seven Doctors thing is a charity... | ||
| Posted: 13 Oct 2008 08:36 PM CDT A competition in SFX has found its winner - a Doctor Who fan from Basingstoke with an "encylcopedic" knowledge of the series. Mike Stevens correctly answered 29 questions in the recent competition, and his prize was a This Planet Earth replica Dalek. But he didn't think it through - the Dalek is too big for his own dwelling, so he's given the &ound;2,500 worth of Skaro killing machine to his sister. Which as you'll see is fair enough... “I’m a life-long Doctor Who... | ||

| Ridley Scott to make The Forever War Posted: 13 Oct 2008 08:00 PM CDT News broke yesterday that Fox 2000 has acquired rights to Joe Haldeman's novel The Forever War. It's kind of an anti-Starship Troopers, although Haldeman always played this down and eventually become a director of the Heinlein society. Here's the big news: Ridley Scott is planning to make it his return to science fiction films!
Ridley Scott apparently first hoped to adapt the story (which he describes as "a bit of The Odyssey by way of Blade Runner") some 25 years ago but rights problems got in the way. Discover more at Variety or Firstshowing.net. Thanks to SF Signal and io9. | ||

The book is about a soldier, William Mandella, drafted into a hellish war in space against alien clones. He returns to Earth after a tour of duty to find that - due to the effects of relativity - non-combatants back home have moved on centuries. Et voila: classic tale of alienation, an exploration of what the future holds for Earth, and a look at what motivates soldiers to keep fighting. It's available as the first in the
