Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News |
| Posted: 25 Feb 2009 04:21 PM PST As noted in This Week in Doctor Who, the 2008 Christmas Special comes to Canada in March when The Next Doctor is shown on the SPACE Channel. The episode is scheduled to shown on Saturday 14th March, at 9pm Eastern. Previous episodes of the series have been shown on CBC. SPACE has also acquired the Canadian broadcast rights to Torchwood. The channel can be seen on Satellite on Bell TV and Star Choice and is available on most Canadian cable systems. | ||
| Posted: 25 Feb 2009 12:17 PM PST The history books will mark today, Thursday 26th February 2009, as possibly one of the saddest in the whole history of television, ever, ever, ever. Infact, I'm emotional writing this; trying to hold back the tears as I face the terrible truth. That ITV has cancelled Demons, its Saturday night answer to Torchwood and Doctor Who. Oh, I've always been rubbish at keeping a straight race. Sarcasm, begone! Truthfully, I've never been that big a fan of the show - I watched the opening ten minutes, and thought that was bad enough. I dipped into the series later in its six week long run, and found that things had got even worse than they were before!! The fact it was costing ITV £4 Million, and ratings crashed from 6 to just 3 million meant that it was almost certain that the Cancellation Reaper was cometh. The slightly better Being Human series has been recommissioned, however. Which I've mixed feelings about, quite honestly. Although last year's pilot was great, the translation to full series hasn't really done it for me, I'm afraid. But the show has it's fans - and will probably grab a good few more when series one is repeated on BBC Two later in the year. It seems that if you want to watch really fantastic drama these days you have to look beyond the confines of science-fiction and fantasy (although both Lost and Battlestar Galactica are brilliant). May I recommend to you HBO's masterpiece The Wire, or AMC's Mad Men? Hell, with the film adaptation due next month, now's the perfect chance to catch up on Paul Abbott's State of Play. Can you name any decent telly to bide us over until Children of Earth hits our screens in June? Write your suggestion in the comments section below! | ||
| Today's Disturbing Matt Smith Revelation Posted: 25 Feb 2009 10:19 AM PST Ok. I'm somewhat adjusted for an actor playing the Doctor being younger than me, and well, just about everyone I know. I trust that Steven Moffat knows what he's doing. But then in the latest Doctor Who Magazine, they point out that not only is Matt Smith "younger" than DWM, but they give enough information for me to determine that the issue of DWM that was out when he was born was probably the first issue of DWM I ever got... | ||
| Reviews: The Darksmith Legacy: The Dust of Ages Posted: 25 Feb 2009 07:12 AM PST A mysterious ancient race, a powerful crystal and the odd in-joke to Doctor Who’s illustrious past are just some of the elements of The Dust of Ages, which sees the Tenth Doctor and a small crew of Moon surveyors tackle a set of monsters made from Moon dust. Justin Richards kicks off the new 10-part Doctor Who book series – which mixes standard linear storytelling with diversions to the Darksmith Legacy website for interactive segments – in the solid style that he has become... | ||

| News: Billie Piper Gives Matt Smith Advice Posted: 24 Feb 2009 11:09 PM PST Speaking in the Daily Star, Billie Piper has been giving advice to new Doctor Who Matt Smith, it transpires. Im sure the degree of advise is more along the lines of what the actor can expect from the crazy world of Doctor Who which seems to get bigger and bigger every year, rather than how he should portray his character, dress, or whether he should propose to his funky South American girlfriend. 'He called me and said ôhat am I going to do?ö' she tells the Daily Star Sunday. 'Your... | ||

| News: Carole Barrowman Interviewed Posted: 24 Feb 2009 04:30 PM PST Captain Jack Harkness actor John Barrowman has written a Torchwood comic strip with his sister Carole Barrowman - and she's been interviewed by the Newsarama.com guys about the story that appears in current issues of Torchwood Magazine. The Tale of the Selkie apparently (and rather pretentiously) deals with the "role of myth in a culture’s zeitgeist". Let's face it, that's not too far from the truth in most fantasy stories. However the genesis of the project is of particular... | ||

| Sonic Lipstick Awards 2008 - Results Posted: 24 Feb 2009 07:01 AM PST Sorry about the delay! This was meant to go live February 5th. Erm... oops! Still, good things come to those that wait, and all. *** Gotta admit that when the SJ.tv reader awards launched back in December I was quitely optimistic that - like last year - they'd have a pretty good reply, possibly even beating the 150ish numbers that we got last year. Alas, it wasn't to be so - only a dozen or so votes were cast (and that's including votes from myself and other SJ.tv bloggers!) which is a mighty shame. Still, the votes have been counted, and the results are in. Ladies and gents, I present the winners... BEST EPISODE 1: "The Temptation of Sarah-Jane Smith" (8.44/10 average) 2: "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" (8/10 average) 3: "The Mark of thr Berserker" (7.81/10 average) 4: "Day of the Clown" (7.25/10 average) 5: "Enemy of the Bane" (7.21/10 average) 6: "Secrets of the Stars" (6.56/10 average) 7: "The Last Sontaran" (6.06/10 average) If we add this to the scores from last year's vote, the episodes so far rate as... (Series 2 episodes represented in italics) 1: "Whatever Happened to Sarah-Jane?" (9.63/10 average) 2: "The Lost Boy" (9.12/10 average) 3: "Eye of the Gorgon" (8.77/10 average) 4: "Invasion of the Bane" (8.5/10 average) 5: "The Temptation of Sarah-Jane Smith" (8.44/10 average) 6: "Warriors of Kudlak" (7.81/10 average) =: "The Mark of the Berserker" (7.81/10 average) 8: "Revenge of the Slitheen" (7.77/10 average) 9: "Day of the Clown" (7.25/10 average) 10: "Enemy of the Bane" (7.21/10 average) 11: "Secrets of the Stars" (6.56/10 average) 12: "The Last Sontaran" (6.06/10 average) In short, no second series episode scaled the heights of the 2007 series - the top episode managing no more than an 8.5/10 average. This year (for the first time) we had episodes scoring an average less than 7, and in the case of "The Last Sontaran" barely even above the 6/10 mark. This could be due to the smaller number of votes cast, or a reflection on the quality of the episodes themselves. BEST AUDIO ADVENTURE 1: "The Glittering Storm" [Stephen Cole] (9.5/10 average) 2: "The Ghost House" [Stephen Cole] (8.5/10 average) 3: "The Time Capsule" [Peter Anghelides] (7/10 average) 4: "The Thirteenth Stone" [Justin Richards] (6/10 average) BEST ACTOR/ACTRESS (excluding Elisabeth Sladen) 1: Daniel Anthony - "Clyde Langer" (66.6%) 2: Yasmin Paige - "Maria Jackson" (22.2%) 3: Thomas Knight - "Luke Smith" (11.1%) 4: Anjli Mohindra - "Rani Chandra" (0%) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR/ACTRESS 1: Joseph Millson - "Alan Jackson" (33.3%) = Juliet Cowan - "Chrissie Jackson" (33.3%) 3: Ace Bhatti - "Haresh Chandra" (11.1%) = Mina Anwar - "Gita Chandra" (11.1%) = Alexander Armstrong - voice of "Mr. Smith" (11.1%) BEST GUEST STAR 1: Samantha Bond - "Mrs. Wormwood" in 2.6 (44.4%) 2: Nicholas Courtney - "Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart" in 2.6 (22.2%) = Rosanna Lavelle - "Barbara Smith" in 2.5 (22.2%) 4: Jocelyn Jee Esien - "Carla Langer" in 2.4 (11.1%) BEST MONSTER/VILLAIN 1: Mrs. Wormwood (55.5%) 2: Odd Bob the Clown (22.2%) 3: Paul Langer [the Berserker] (11.1%) = The Trickster (11.1%) BEST WRITER 1: Joseph Lidster - "The Mark of the Berserker" (44.4%) 2: Gareth Roberts - "Secrets of the Stars", "The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith" (33.3%) 3: Phil Ford - "The Last Sontaran", "Day of the Clown", "Enemy of the Bane" (22.2%) BEST DIRECTOR 1: Graeme Harper - "The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith", "Enemy of the Bane" (77.7%) 2: Joss Agnew - "The Last Sontaran", "The Mark of the Berserker" (22.2%) 3: Michael Kerrigan - "Day of the Clown", "Secrets of the Stars" (0%) MERCHANDISE Not enough data obtained to put together a worthwhile result. DVD POLL The story you'd most like to see released on DVD is... "Terror of the Zygons"!! "Death to the Daleks", "Planet of the Spiders" and "Masque of Mandragora" also recieved votes. THE YES/NO GAME 1: Do you buy the SJA novelisations? (Yes - 33% No - 66%) 2: Would you buy a Sarah Jane Adventures official magazine? (No - 100%) 7a: Should the show end after series 3? (Yes - 11% No - 88%) 7b: Do you think the show will end after series 3? (Yes - 77% No - 22%) 8: Do you read SARAH-JANE.tv everyday? (Yes - 55% No - 44%) 2 OF A KIND 1: Series One or Series Two? (winner: Series One - 55%) 2: Maria Jackson or Rani Chandra? (winner: Maria - 75%) 3: Maria's parents or Rani's parents? (winner: Maria's - 100%) 4: BBC One @ 4:35pm or CBBC Channel @ 5:15pm? (winner: CBBC - 66.6%) 5: "Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?" or "The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith"? (winner: "Whatever..." - 71.4%) 6: SARAH-JANE.tv or TORCHWOOD.tv? (winner: SJ.tv - 77%) SERIES SHOWDOWN 1: Doctor Who (1963 onwards) - 62.5% 2: The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007 onwards) - 37.5% 3: Torchwood (2006 onwards) - 0% THE AVERAGE FAN Not enough data collected for the results of this to be worthwhile, sorry. Might run it again as a seperate post later in the year - but people need to actually respond this time!! FINALLY... 5 words to sum up the second series. My favourite responces: Ella - "Made of awesome" Linda - "Better and better and better" Chris - "Five words? Sarah Jane? Impossible!" Nabu - "Could have been better :P" Brandon - "It gets better with age!" My own opinion? I wrote "Underwhelming/directionless set of adventures." And that folks, at last, is a wrap! Thanks to everybody that *did* vote, and congratulations to all of the winners. All that's left for me to say is this - bring on the 2009 series, and I'll see you same time, same place for more voting (hopefully!) next year. | ||

A "multi-terrain loader" was spotted in flames, while the TARDIS also stood on location in the quarry. Some suspect... | ||

| Posted: 24 Feb 2009 12:46 AM PST For the benefit of anybody who might not know, I work in a cinema and one of the films being heavily trailed right now is the Dragonball Evolution movie, set for release here in the United Kingdom this April 3rd (or April 8th for North American cinema goers). The film stars James Marsters (Captain John Hart) as Lord Piccolo, Dragonball's resident bad boy. The film is produced by 20th Century Fox (so those boycotting the studio following the Watchmen court case, beware!) and has an official website launched here, that features a trailer for the flick and a synopsis of what's supposed to be going on (I won't even try to break into the Dragonball story here; mostly because the whole mythology baffles me no end). I highly doubt I'll be queuing to watch the film upon its release, but I should think there's a far few readers here who will be drawn in by Marsters' involvement. All I'll say is, this being a typical teen-orientated release prepare for lots of talking and popcorn throwing in the screen! Don't go crying to us ushers when you tell them to stop, and they attack you with the popcorn instead!! *** In other news, a quick update on March's "The Hub: 2" convention, due to take place the 13th, 14th and 15th of that month at the Park Inn Hotel, Northampton. Guests now include Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd, Tom Price and writer Phil Ford. You can read all about the event and found out how to book by going all clicky clicky here. More updates soon, including an indepth look at forthcoming merchandise! | ||

| Posted: 22 Feb 2009 07:14 PM PST It's been a long time coming, but at last the Law & Order spin-off series headed by writer Chris Chibnall and producer Richard Stokes (both of whom helmed Torchwood until the end of its second season) has finally hit British television screens. Law & OrderUK airs on ITV1 every Monday for the next thirteen weeks - and is executive produced by original US creator Dick Wolf. Bradley Walsh (he of Coronation Street and, yes, Wheel of Fortune fame - and also a serial in last year's Sarah Jane Adventures run) stars as DS Ronnie Brooks - a "real East End copper's copper" who's sharp with his laconic wit and moral standings. His foil/sidekick is Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber, who stars as DS Matt Devlin. To make up the third and final officer within the "law" side of things, there's Harriet Walter playing DI Natalie Chandler. Freema Agyeman - former Martha Jones - appears as young Barrister Alesha Philips, in a role specifically written by Chibnall with Agyeman in mind. Some say her decision to take the role proved to be her downfall with regards to future Torchwood appearences... To prepare for the role, Agyeman apparently sat in on real life court cases, and talked to her sister, who also holds a law degree. Bill Paterson (Sea of Souls) acts alongside Agyeman as Chief Prosecutor, and head of London's Crown Prosecution Service, and making up the third and final part of the "order" team is Ben Daniels, as James Steel. Episode one concerns the investigation into the death of a baby, who has been dumped outside of a hospital inside a sports bag. That's Law & OrderUK, ITV1 @ 9PM. (Though you probably knew that already, considering how well the show has been promoted online, on our television screens and across billboards everywhere) *** Meanwhile the man who killed Owen Harper (well, the first time anyways...) Alan Dale continues to pop up every now and then on Lost, as Charles Widmore - who we're fast learning has a vital connection to the island and its mysteries. He'll also appear this week as the head zombie killer in ITV's Moving Wallpaper/Renaissance double. | ||
