Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

Can I have some Tennant to go?

Posted: 08 Mar 2009 10:52 AM PDT

The rather wonderful SFX Magazine interviews Russell T Davies in its latest issue (#181) and the NuWho supremo reveals that following this Easter's Doctor Who special - "Planet of the Dead" - there won't be a new episode of Doctor Who again until Christmas time, when the final three specials air. Two of those episodes make up David Tennant's finale, and are directed by Euros Lyn - who also helmed 2009's Children of Earth.

Talking to Wired about the swansong of the Tenth Doctor's era, Lyn had this to say: "I've seen the scripts, and they're amazing. I'm being being very careful not to give anything away, but I think fans will be thrilled with David's farewell and how we set up the 11th Doctor. I have to approach the project as I would any other. From the script's perspective. The past or the significance of the episode isn't relevant. You have to start with the script from day one."

Lyn begins the Doctor Who gig the day following the completion of Children of Earth. About that project, Lyn states, ""It's been an endurance test. It was a 16-week shoot for the Torchwood season -- longer than most feature films. But the intensity keeps you focused on the work."

He goes on to discuss parts of the plot (so SPOILERS!) in the rest of Wired.com's interview.

The BBC's Ashes to Ashes returns in April - so the channel will likely have to wait until that show has completed its run (mid-June) before Torchwood's third season can air (if Torchwood airs on BBC One Monday-Friday one week, at 9pm then there's no way both shows can air at the same time). Either that, or A2A takes a break for a week, which doesn't seem very likely to me...

Coming soon... the site unveils its new set of writers, that'll lead the way during 2009! If you still want to write for us, then there's still a couple of days to get your name to me via this email address.

Grampa Slitheen

Thanks to the efforts of one reader I've been made aware of an interview that Ronnie Corbett conducted with the Daily Express newspaper, where the star reported the following about the upcoming SJA Comic Relief special, "They sent me the script and it really appealed, I play a bowler-hatted ambassador from outer space who visits Sarah Jane's attic. I'm beamed down in a bright green light and it's all very intriguing. We filmed it all in one very long and tiring day and K-9 was there along with the Slitheen. It was great fun."

Hmmm.... Corbett as an aged Slitheen, perhaps?!

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine talks to Russell T Davies about the special, where he says, "This was a real honour, because Comic Relief actually approached us to include The Sarah Jane Adventures in the night's celebrations!" He goes on to confirm that the mini-adventure was be directed by Joss Agnew and produced by Brian Minchin (presumably because regular producer Nikki Smith - here acting as Executive Producer - is busy over on Doctor Who's specials). It was filmed on my birthday, February 19th, at Upper Boat.

Meanwhile, during an interview with the magazine one of the special's writers, Gareth Roberts drops a hint as to an old Doctor Who villain who may, or may not, be making their way to Bannerman Road during this third series...

"The other Hand of Fear is still out there," He reckons, "And one day it will come knocking on Sarah Jane's door..."

On one of his series three script, Gareth has this to say: "I'm writing a series three story as we speak, and I keep having to pinch myself. It was an idea I offered up thinking that nobody would ever go for it. If you thought The Stolen Earth was mad... As I was writing the cliffhanger to the first part I thought 'Is this real, or is it all a drug-induced and electronic dream?' If you'd told me ten years ago that I'd be writing this scene, and it would be going out on BBC One, I'd have exploded into dust!"

DWM reveals the writers for the third series as:
Phil Ford (2x stories; 4x actual episodes)
Gareth Roberts (1x story; 2x actual episodes)
Joseph Lidster (1x story; 2x actual episodes)
Brian Dooley (1x story; 2x actual episodes)
Rupert Laight (1x story; 2x actual episodes)

Laight has wrote several of the SJA novelisations, whereas readers might know of Dooley's previous work on The Smoking Room and BBC Three's new hit Being Human.

Reviews: Orbis - Part One

Posted: 08 Mar 2009 08:28 AM PDT

It seems very strange to have Doctor Who so limited in broadcast episodes for 2009. Since 2005 we have been so pampered that it’s sometimes hard to remember that we were without regular Doctor Who once before and that time it lasted for sixteen years. Sixteen years?! Wow. How did we fill the time? Well for starters there were books and comics, but the one that got me hooked ever since my first was the Big Finish adventures. Since they kicked off in 1999 we got brand new monthly episodes...

News: Orbis in Demand

Posted: 08 Mar 2009 08:15 AM PDT

Big Finish launched their "Saturday Evening" range of Eighth Doctor audios with Orbis yesterday to a massive reception - in fact demand was so high that there were a few teething troubles. The Big Finish website experienced slight disruptions to their download of part one of Orbis due to a simple underestimation of the volume of simoultaneous downloads. A bit of tech support later, however and everything seems back on track, with Orbis available to download and part two...

News: It's Hannah Murray - News of the World

No Eleventh Doctor news and speculation for weeks and then two come along at once - and News of the World reckon that Skins actress Hannah Murray is going to be joining Matt Smith in the TARDIS! Hannah Murray is best known for her work as the heart-breakingly troubled Cassie Ainsworth in Skins (who suffers from anorexia nervosa, bulimia, self harm, drug addiction and low self esteem) and is apparently considered - by one of those BBC insiders - to be a perfect choice to follow in the...

News: Matt Smith Companions?

Posted: 07 Mar 2009 07:52 PM PST

More Eleventh Doctor companion speculation comes this weekend from The Stage, where Mark Wright's blog points out that it has been pretty quiet on the Doctor Who front. Which is hardly surprising given that this is a "Who-Lite" year - or is it? Given that in 2009 somewhere in the region of 12 episodes are being filmed (could be more could be a bit less) and 3 or 4 of these are aired, one would expect a bit more news on the casting front, particularly on the much-vaunted Eleventh...
