| News: 2009 HUGO Awards Nominations Posted: 20 Mar 2009 07:39 AM PDT Doctor Who receives two nominations in the 2009 HUGO Awards lists - the series fourth year on the trot since its 2005 return, and the second in succession where two stories are represented. This time around it's the turn of Steven Moffat's Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead to be nominated - giving the writer his fourth nomination in succession as well as the chance to add to his earlier awards. Of particular note however is the presence of Turn Left - an episode heavy on sci-fi... | ||
| Posted: 20 Mar 2009 06:25 AM PDT It struck me the other day that I haven't blogged personally in a long time, mainly because I've been so busy, so if you'll forgive me I thought I'd just chunter away for a while. So let's get the links out of the way first. The BBC were kind enough to chat to me, Iain Banks, Ken MacLeod, Ian Watson and myself about current issues in SF, the results of which can be found here:http:// | ||
| Posted: 20 Mar 2009 06:00 AM PDT News (unsubstantiated rumour?) leaked today by the bastion of truth and justice that is The Sun, reveals that not only is The Master returning (again played by John Simm - yay!) but La Piper will return and will be accompanied by Catherine Tate and Freema Agyeman. So, what was all that tosh about the boundaries between universes not being traversable and never again will Rose and The Doc meet??? Never let the established facts or a previously good story stand in the way of another wacky idea, eh, Russell? Doomsday had a corker of an ending which is increasingly watered down by repeated returns of the one who could never return. Anyway, it'll be great to see John Simm return as The Master, maybe toned down a notch from the manic megalomaniac madman of Last of The Timelords. And it will be wonderful to see Donna return one way or another - the only new series companion that I actually DO want to see again. Freema was fab as Martha, but I think her story really has been played out and she voluntarily left - several times! Anyhoo... bring it on, this fan boy can't wait to see how 10 meets his end and how 11 will pick the weighty mantle of Britain's most popular icon! :-) | ||

| Posted: 20 Mar 2009 02:00 AM PDT It's not often we give a glowing review to a direct-to-video horror flick - a brutal kicking is usually the order of the day - but we've made an exception for Splinter (out on DVD on 30 March). This low-budget monster movie with shades of The Thing concerns a... | ||
| Big Finish Podcast - March 2009 Part 2 Posted: 20 Mar 2009 01:17 AM PDT Oh no, exec Dalek Nick Briggs, web maestro Paul Wilson and design guru Alex Mallison have done a podcast! Could this be the worst podcast you've ever heard? Listen and judge for yourself! On the menu this time - apart from the tea, sandwiches and crisp, of course - the weekly Eighth Doctor downloads, cover design, feet, high angle photographs and website design. But where is line producer David Richardson and the now almost (but definitely not quite) legendary director Ken Bentley? Never fear, all will be answered in this fact-and-action-packed half hour of borderline juvenile behaviour. Big Finish would like to apologize in advance... But dare you miss out? | ||

| News: The Sun: Rose Tyler to Return (Again) Posted: 19 Mar 2009 06:41 PM PDT UK tabloid hate-mag The Sun has claimed today that Billie Piper is set to return to Doctor Who for David Tennant’s final episode. That's right - the conclusion of Doomsday looks set to be even further devalued by yet another omniverse spanning threat as Rose Tyler teams up once more with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) - to take on the Doctor’s revived arch-enemy The Master, played again by John Simm. Whatever the casting situation, one thing is... | ||

| News: Lotto Cash for Kids TV says RTD Posted: 19 Mar 2009 05:28 AM PDT Another angle to RTD's recent criticism of the BBC's programme making to a BAFTA audience was the shameful way in which children's television is produced in the UK. Referring to the fact that the National Lottery gives money away for the production of poor films, Davies argued that we're in a sorry state of affairs as far as publicly funded children's television is concerned. Of particular note is the 300,000 drop in audience of The Sarah Jane Adventures which coincided with BBC One's... |
