Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

It's Christmas In Cardiff!

Posted: 29 Apr 2009 03:29 PM PDT

"We Are Coming"... to traumatize you! Well, sort of. The official Torchwood website has just posted a new 10-second teaser clip of CoE. It was originally cut for Australian television networks (which only recently aired series two), but the Beeb has been kind enough to let international viewers watch it on their site. It's a must-see for anyone who thought that the longer preview didn't show enough creepy children acting creepily (if that's even a word).

****

Fandom has been working overtime today with rumors of a certain Torchwood member appearing on the Doctor Who set... but now we have photos to prove it! John Barrowman has been spotted filming for the final specials, and intrepid fan alun_vega has photographic evidence of Jack's return to the Who crew.

The scenes he's shooting now are intended for the final two Tenth Doctor specials, which are slated to air around Christmas 2009. Does this mean Jack will witness the regeneration scene? Because I would pay good money to see his reaction to barely-legal Eleven.

(Also: way to abandon your team again, Mr. I-Came-Back-For-You! Have we learned nothing from 'Last of the Time Lords?')

****

Speaking of The Barrowman (because when are we ever not?), his official site has been updated with news of the BFI's exclusive screening of CoE:

John will join other members of the cast of Torchwood at the National Film Theatre on 12 June for a preview of Torchwood: Children of Earth, followed by a Q&A session. Tickets are expected to go on sale on 5 May (members) and 12 May (general public).

Before watching Lost's 100th episode tonight, check out 14 other sci-fi milestones

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 11:00 PM PDT

Tonight, the TV show Lost hits the milestone of its 100th episode. Few sci-fi TV shows manage to reach 100 episodes—for example, even the long-running Quantum Leap only made it to 96—but when they do, we always look forward to it. The cast and crew will often have a big party, and the viewers are usually given a special episode to enjoy, something with stunt casting or major plot developments.

But that wasn't always the case. The 100th episode of The Twilight Zone was Ray Bradbury's "I Sing the Body Electric" (May 18, 1962) but nothing special was done for it, possibly because the program was an anthology show. Neither were the 100th episodes of Bewitched (March 9, 1967) or I Dream of Jeannie (January 6, 1969) anything special. The 100th serial of the original Doctor Who, "Stones of Blood," (October-November 1978) almost had a scene with a cake to celebrate the Doctor's 751st birthday, but in the end the show runners felt that it would be too self-indulgent to acknowledge the milestone.

Times have changed, however, and in the 1990s, sci-fi series began to offer special 100th episodes. Here, in chronological order, are 14 of sci-fi's most memorable 100th episodes

DWO WhoCast episode 116

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 11:00 AM PDT

We get the crowbar out this week on the DWO WhoCast as there is so much to fit into this episode.

Marty is recently returned from the fun that was the Invasion 09 convention up in Barking, UK and shares his thoughts on the days frivolities. Tim Drury also kindly provided some sensational mp3 feedback on what went on during the day. Our thanks to Derek and his team at Invasion 09 for inviting Marty along to the convention and also for making him feel so welcome on the day.

He managed to nab a few tasty interviews as well, and this week he talks to Christopher Owen, who appeared in Meglos as Earthling.

The WhoCast boys catch up on their DVD watching, with James reviewing The Rescue on DVD.

One of the shows most popular segments, Random Fandom, makes another appearance and we have for you two outstanding examples of fan creativity and endeavour. One that can well be described as the grandfather (grandmother?) of Doctor Who websites out there and one that is truly a labour of love.

Siobhan Morgan's Nitro 9 website
Nat Titman's Artwork Marathon

The mailbag is cracked open again this week and it covers the gamut of American fans and their toys, K9 and Doctor Who music!

Certainly something for everyone in this edition of the DWO WhoCast.

Hugo Award Nominations 2009

Posted: 28 Apr 2009 11:00 AM PDT

Doctor Who receives two nominations for the 2009 Hugo Awards.

And The Award Goes To...

Posted: 26 Apr 2009 09:29 AM PDT

It's interesting what you can find on the web if you know what to look for. A little investigative searching can bring up a wealth of information!

If you were to search for SJA merchandise on BBC Shop or Amazon, for example, you may find that you can preorder two new SJA audiobooks due to be released later this year! No details as yet on the plot or who's going to be involved, but if previous SJA audiobooks are any indication, writer Stephen Cole may be on-board! With successful SJA titles like The Glittering Storm and Ghost House under his belt, the BBC would be fools not to take him on again!

Alternatively, if you were to look up the recent BAFTA Cymru nominations list - you may spot that The Sarah Jane Adventures has once again been nominated for best children's programme! Having narrowly missed out on two RTS awards and a BAFTA in the past, will fourth time really be the charm? I'll be attending the award ceremony in Cardiff next month to find out.
