If I Didn't Love Charlie Ross, I'd Hate His Guts

Charlie Ross and Captain Kirk

Those of you in the UK who attend 10th Planet events will undoubtedly recognize the chap on the left - it's Charlie Ross, convention interviewer extraordinaire, who also emcees the cabarets and does his hilarious Who-based stand-up there.  Charlie is also a writer, and we've optioned one of his scripts. He's out from Glasgow for meetings this week, and I scored tickets for us to the last preview of "Farragut North" at the Geffen Playhouse.  Naturally, I was too busy to go, so Charlie and Mark (my producing partner) were treated to Mr. Big and Captain Kirk in the flesh while I slaved over a hot budget.  Here's some photographic evidence.  I am considering throwing Charlie out on the street as I write this.

Paul McGann's Reel on Vimeo

Posted: 26 Jun 2009 11:06 AM PDT

I was looking for an actor reel for a project and stumbled upon this - You have to go to the AOL page, then click in the center of the screen, and you're re-directed to the proper page.

Actor reels are interesting - I've cut a few myself, always fascinating to see what the agent and/or actor are trying to present. What do you think of Paul McGann's?

Paul McGann in "Helen" at the Globe Theatre in London

Posted: 26 Jun 2009 01:10 AM PDT

My advice to anyone who's in the UK during the run is GO!  It's always interesting seeing these guys on stage; completely different medium.  McGann has done theatre in the past but not often, so grab the opportunity if you can!  The Globe is also a very cool place to see a play.  Have a drink at the Anchor, just a bit east of the theatre, and sit where Samuel Pepys sat, watching London burn during the Great Fire of 1666.

More Stockbridge Horror!

Posted: 26 Jun 2009 12:10 AM PDT

Later this year, the TARDIS will be returning to Stockbridge - the sleepy English village originally created for the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip and most recently seen in DWM 403-405 in The Stockbridge Child. The new trilogy of audio adventures from Big Finish will star Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, accompanied by Sarah Sutton as Nyssa.
"I loved the old 1980s DWM strips set in Stockbridge - The Tides of Time, The Stockbridge Horror, Stars Fell on Stockbridge," says script editor Alan Barnes. "I loved the idea that the Fifth Doctor would make his home from home in a pretty English village, and that weird stuff would keep on happening there. The audios have visited the place before, briefly, in Circular Time and will again in Izzy's Story in The Company of Friends.
"The three stories in our 'Stockbridge trilogy' are set in the past, present and future of the village. They're all very different. October's Castle of Fear, set in the Middle Ages, is a galumphing historical adventure with, hopefully, a very surprising twist. Jonny Morris's The Eternal Summer, released in November, is a weird Sapphire and Steel-y sort of affair featuring mad UFO spotter Max Edison, and Mark Morris's Village of the Damned, released in December, is a full blooded horror-ish sort of thing, with sinister ravens and zombie cricketers!" While the casts are still a closely guarded secret, star of the imminent Torchwood: Children of Earth Susan Brown (see picture) will be taking a role in more than one of the plays...
In other news, the cast of Blue Forgotten Planet (September) has been confirmed. JJ Feild (who starred in the BBC's The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North) plays David McCallister, Alec Newman (Children of Dune) plays Ed Driscoll, and Andree Bernard (The Shakespeare Code) is Ellen Green. The story stars Colin Baker's Doctor and India Fisher as Charley Pollard.
Finally, Nicola Bryant is making her debut as a Doctor Who director with The Companion Chronicles: The Prisoner of Peladon. Nicola, best known as 1980s companion Peri, has previously directed for Big Finish's UNIT and Judge Dredd ranges. This September release sees David Troughton return as King Peladon for the first time in 37 years, while Nicholas Briggs plays the Ice Warriors.

Still Alive!

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 11:27 PM PDT

It's been quiet around these parts for a while now, huh? That's more to do with a distinct lack of news updates than anything else really. The new isue of Doctor Who Magazine breaks the silence, and reports on one very special guest star appearing in The Sarah Jane Adventures series three...

Yes, it's Nigel Harvers in a role that "looks set to change things for Sarah Jane forever" (according to producer Nikki Wilson). You might have seen Harvers in any number of shows, including the BBC's Manchild - an all male take on the Sex & the City formula - and Dangerfield. He also had a role in 1981's Chariots of Fire.

Also appearing on the show is Brian Miller, or Lis Sladen's husban to you and I! His casting has been described as "simply ideal" and "sees him in conflict with the gang... although there's a lot more going on with Brian's character than might first appear" (again, all quotes from Nikki Wilson in DWM issue 410).

Paul Kasey will be playing [SPOILER - HIGHLIGHT!] the Judoon [END SPOILER] will Nick Briggs returning to voice the creatures. The weak links of series two - for me anyroad - Ace Bhatti and Mina Anwar return to their roles as Rani's parents. I figured they would, but to be quite frank I doubt I'd have missed them if they had left the series on a regular basis. Much preferred Clyde's folks.

I'm also hearing that the show is now being shot in High Definition! The first for a children's BBC series...? I'm not so sure, but it's just reason to celebrate! Nabu's April Fool's prank could one day come to pass!!

Doctor Who Magazine 410 also previews the latest Torchwood adventure, Children of Earth, and has news on Tom Baker's return to the role of the Fourth Doctor, in a series of new BBC Audios. The regular Tim Team column this month reviews Battlefield, which features a guest performance by Nicholas Courtney as Lethbridge-Stewart.

You can get the magazine now, for £3.99.

Underground Toys San Diego Comic Con 2009 Exclusives

Posted: 25 Jun 2009 11:11 PM PDT

Underground Toys have released images and descriptions of their 2009 San Diego Comic Con exclusives. They seem to be the same exclusives as the figures being introduced as exclusives to the UK Forbidden Planet retailer (and could not ship outside of the UK, now we know why).

Sixth Doctor with 'Real Time' Blue coat - $19.99
This alternative costume was most visibly used in the BBC webcast 'Real Time' (having previously appeared on a few book and audio book covers). It varies vastly from the gaudy coat of many colors normally worn by Colin Baker's sixth Doctor whilst retaining some design elements including the dandy's tie and question mark shirt collar. For many fans this has become almost the preferred costume with it's more muted, less frivolous, colorways. Underground Toys are thrilled to be able to offer this new figure as part of their 2009 Exclusives program.
