Hornets' News - BBC Press Release

Posted: 30 Jul 2009 02:54 AM PDT

The BBC has released more details on the return of Tom Baker to the role of the fourth Doctor after twenty eight years.

Baker reprises his role in a new five part audio adventure for BBC Audiobooks.

Doctor Who: Hornets' Nest, is written by Paul Magrs and also stars Richard Franklin as Mike Yates, Susan Jameson as Mrs Wibbsey, Rula Lenska as the Hornet Queen and Stephen Thorne.

The first story, The Stuff of Nightmares, will be available to buy from 3rd September 2009 with the remaining four stories following in subsequent months.

  • The Dead Shoes – 8th October
  • The Circus of Doom – 5th November
  • A Sting in the Tale – 3rd December
  • Hive of Horror – 3rd December
Writer Paul Magrs said,
'This is the first adventure with the Tom Baker Doctor since Logopolis. And it feels fantastic to write for him. I would say he's a brilliant mixture of everything the Fourth Doctor ever was. He's dark and sombre at times; other times he's gleefully macabre and mischievous.'
To support the series a dedicated webpage will launch on 10th August. The page will contain exclusive content and material such as a Q&A with Tom Baker, photographs from the recordings, audio clips and a poll on Tom's best moments as the Doctor.

Doctor Who: Hornet's Nest - The Stuff of Nightmares

Responding to an advert apparently worded for him alone, Captain Mike Yates (retired) is reunited with a ghost from the past. But why has the Doctor, that mysterious traveller in Time and Space, sent for his former UNIT acquaintance?

Trapped by a horde of vicious creatures in an apparently innocuous English country cottage, the two old friends are on the brink of an enormous adventure.

As the Doctor relates his recent escapades, it becomes clear to Mike that they – and the Earth at large – are facing an enemy of unimaginable power and horrific intent. The nightmare is only just beginning.

Charley Special Podcast

Posted: 30 Jul 2009 12:34 AM PDT

Can it really be the end for Charlotte Pollard?

Charley started her long journey with the audio adventures of Doctor Who in the year 2000, with the Eighth Doctor... Well, actually, that's when actress India Fisher started her journey with Big Finish working alongside Paul McGann.

For the last two years, she's been time-space travelling with Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor. Somehow, Charley's been keeping the truth about herself from him... but truth will out, and in this year's three Sixth Doctor stories, Patient Zero, Paper Cuts and Blue Forgotten Planet there's big trouble in store for the redoubtable Miss Pollard.

Attempting and failing to calm the usual chaos of a Big Finish Podcast, India Fisher pops in for tea, a chat, a quiz and some great clips. We are forever in her debt and love her truly, madly and deeply.

Hit that podcast button now or press the play button in the RSS FEEDS box to stream the audio. The choice is yours... And remember...

It's freeeeeeeee!

Michael Summerton (1943-2009)

Posted: 29 Jul 2009 09:05 PM PDT

The actor/agent Michael Summerton died on the 16th June 2009, aged 65.

Summerton started out in the theatre and then moved to television with a role in the BBC Soap Compact; he then went on to play one of the very first Daleks to appear in Doctor Who.

In later life he became an agent, running his own company Michael Summerton Management Ltd which specialises in choreography and dancing, and was notable is being the agent for Arlene Phillips and Bruno Tonioli, both featuring as judges in the popular BBC series Strictly Come Dancing.

From The Telegraph Obituary:
His agent told him he would not need to learn any lines for the casting, and when he arrived at the BBC workshops he was asked to strip down to his underpants and sit in what appeared to be a tub on castors. Summerton (who was one of the four original Daleks) was instructed in how to move this apparatus about, the director saying: "We want to test this prototype for manoeuvrability. We want you to move forwards, backwards, sideways. Quickly, slowly." Presently the director lowered a lid over him with a plunger sticking out of it. Summerton found himself in total darkness. He would later relate: "When the lid went on I knew my career as an actor was over."

July Releases

Posted: 28 Jul 2009 11:24 PM PDT

July releases Doctor Who: The Company of Friends, Doctor Who: The Scapegoat, The Companion Chronicles: The Drowned World, Stargate: Pathogen and Dark Shadows: Echoes of Insanity have now been mailed out to subscribers, with downloads either currently available or scheduled to go live by week's end. Apologies for them running later than usual; the Sales team has been working at full tilt to fill Summer Sale, Short Trips, Big Finish for a Fiver and DWM orders, which has barely left any time for the regular releases.

Due to mastering problems at a very late stage, Benny 10.2 (Absence) and Highlander 1.4 (Kurgan Rising) are, in the former case somewhat ironically, running slightly late; the problems have now been fixed, and the moment the CDs are pressed up they'll be sent out, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Again, our apologies for the delay, but trust us, they're both worth a bit of extra anticipation!

After the Doctor Who panel ended, I hauled butt over to the Sails Pavillion, where my Darlng Husband had run through multiple lines to get me a ticket for the autograph session and saved me a place in line.

There were wild rumors that David Tennant would take part in this session and Murray Gold had hinted on Twitter that he might also take part in it.

But no.  Euros Lyn, Julie Gardner and Russell T. came in after about an hour's wait.

Thanks to the DH, I was right up in front of the line and had a moment or two to trade comments with RTD.

Of course, I have my own agenda, and asked him, as he'd just claimed that Four was *his* Doctor, why the BBC no longer distributes Doctor Who Scarf patterns.

He'd had no idea and offered to look into it.  I gave him my card.

DWO WhoCast episode 129

Posted: 28 Jul 2009 11:00 AM PDT

Back to normal after two episodes of Torchwood goodness, Trevor and Marty don their ties and best jackets and slip behind the news desk and spend an episode nattering about the recent events in the Whoniverse.

This episode does contain spoilers for some of the more topical items that have been announced recently, so if you wish to avoid the spoilers 5.23 - 14.16 is not a part of the podcast you should be listening to.

But apart from that, the boys cover the latest in news, and manage to slip in a review for the semi-recent release of that most superb Patrick Troughton DVD release, The War Games (or as its known in fan circles the episode with the 9 episodes of filler).

Marty and Trevor seek to debunk the fan myth that War Games is boring, and hope to convince you to rush out and buy this release.
