Posted: 27 Jul 2010 09:59 AM PDT Now seems as good a time as ever to make a big public "thank you" for the stirling work of our news contributors over the past few months, without whom little of the Doctor Who and Torchwood news over the past few months would have made it to your PC, Mac, iPhone, BlackBerry, Android or (gasp) Windows Mobile browser. A few months ago we issued a big call for contributors. It has been a resounding success with a group of excellent article writers and reviewers joining our team along with a trio of writers whose work has made Kasterborous the most regularly updated source of Doctor Who news content on the web. Over the next few days a couple of our contributors will be taking a break, so what better time to say a big thank you to Patrick Riley, Andrew Reynolds, and Mez Burdett for their superb work. Covering such obscure items as iPhone apps and village fetes to the biggest Doctor Who gossip, this trio of heroes have been great. We're hoping to have Patrick and Andrew back as soon after their breaks as possible – so any fans they've attracted out there need not panic. Incidentally additional congratulations should go to Andrew who has been fortunate enough to have a submission accepted by Den of Geek – look out for his article on there later this week! As ever, we're always on the look out for news and article contributors – email me for details: christian@kasterborous.com

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 09:30 AM PDT It was in The Eleventh Hour we were first told of the mysterious silence, but we’re still no closer to finding out what it is, or, more importantly, what’s behind it… Steven Moffat has promised us that all of our questions will be answered in Series 6, and we’ve been left with plenty of clues to dissect until it hits [...]

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 08:21 AM PDT Russell T. Davies, the archduke of Torchwood, couldn't be happier with Series 4's brand new 10 episode structure – in fact he was so happy, he told SFX all about it:
Head Writer/Producer Davies has also promised that the scope for the new International Torchwood will be expanded to meet its new horizons:
While not actually saying a whole lot Davies did let slip that he felt that the five-part Children of Earth was 'rushed' and could easily have ran on for at least three more episodes. Torchwood Series 4 will see the return of both John Barrowman as (Group) Captain Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper – the series is set to air simultaneously on the Starz network and the BBC in Summer 2011. SFX 199 is on sale this Wednesday where you can teased by Davies all over again, you lucky tykes. (via Digital Spy)
Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes? Posted: 27 Jul 2010 06:13 AM PDT Steven Moffat has appeared on alongside playwright Mark Ravenhill on BBC Two's Newsnight to talk about the new Sherlock TV series and Doctor Who. Little is revealed about the shows but it is an interesting conversation that looks into the parallels between the two shows main character's of Sherlock Holmes and the Doctor. The pair also discuss the gay following that Doctor Who has and if it's the same for Sherlock. You can view the full interview by playing the link below. (Via Blogtor Who)

Adventure Games Are Number One! Posted: 27 Jul 2010 04:42 AM PDT Good news and bad news on the front of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games today. We'll start with the bad news first and get it out of the way; the cost of the bundle of Episodes 1 and 2 for international customers on the Direct2Drive website has increased from $3.70 to $4.95. And that's still not yet close to touching the BBC-reported $6.99! The price is going up people, get your copies before it's too expensive late! Moving on to a lighter note, IGN doesn't seem to be losing much money from the recent price slash; the combo-pack of City of the Daleks and Blood of the Cybermen has pole-vaulted to the very top of Direct2Drive's charts! In fact, it's number one spot is currently three places higher than the legendary Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic! How's that for our favourite franchise's international appeal? Of course, the fact that the games are available exclusively on Direct2Drive probably doesn't hinder IGN's profits… If you're one of those customers who's foreign but not American, and you've been having a bit of trouble accessing the Direct2Drive page, see if this advice from Kasterborous reader Laz (from a comment in our last report on the games) helps you out:
If you decide to try out this method, let us know in the comments or via e-mail (patrick@kasterborous.com) if you have any success! And many thanks to Laz for getting in touch with the folks at Direct2Drive and coming up with a solution! If you're looking for opinions on the game duo before you hand over your hard-earned cash, we've got those, too! Click here for our review of City of the Daleks, and here for Blood of the Cybermen. Should you want to make a purchase, this is the place to do so (or follow the above instructions). Now go play some Adventure Games!

Neil Gaiman blogs about Series 6 episode Posted: 27 Jul 2010 02:45 AM PDT Neil Gaiman has recently updated his official website with a new blog entry in which he discusses the ongoing budget issues he’s faced while working on his Doctor Who episode. In the entry, the acclaimed writer admits that “the wonderful thing about books and comics is your budget is infinite”, however ”that’s not true of television, where a budget might [...]
Posted: 27 Jul 2010 02:30 AM PDT You know the score-you're home alone, just watched an episode of Doctor Who featuring the Daleks and before you can stop yourself, you're doing your own impression of the metal meanies. The only problem is that you can't emulate their grating tones in the same way that Nick Briggs does because you don't have a ring modulator (the device that enabled the signal-processing method that was used to create the grating, mechanical tones of the Daleks back in the '60s, and is still used today by voice artist Nick Briggs) to hand. Well worry no more because if you own an iPhone, iPod Touch or an iPad (wot no Android? – Ed) you can now download a rather nifty little app called the iExterminate which changes your voice into that of a Dalek! Completely unofficial and in no way linked to the BBC, the app comes loaded with 4 pre recorded phrases and four preset settings. So as soon as you download it, you speak into the phones mic, record your phrase and then apply one of the preset modulations to get yourself "Dalek-ised" straight away. There is also a suspicious looking Dalek eye staring at you when you open the app which actually lets you manually adjust the modulation for your specific needs! This genius little invention is guaranteed to raise a giggle and is a steal at 59p (at least 10% of profits will be going to the Alzheimer's Society). If you have the opportunity, get this now! The full review can be found at SFX.com with an audio advert for the app which sounds an awful lot like Nick Briggs doing a Davros impression!

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 12:35 AM PDT …as are Phil Collinson and Gareth Hunt, if the world of slightly wonky Doctor Who figures is to be believed! Legend reports that the Fourth Doctor doll released by Denys Fisher in the late 1970s had the head of The New Avenger's Gambit (Gareth Hunt) following an accident with the original mould. Apparently they had similar hairstyles… In 2005, the Ninth Doctor/Slitheen walkie talkie set featured a 12″ Doctor Who that resembled series producer Phil Collinson rather than star Christopher Eccleston. And now, in 2010, a brand new Planet of Fire-themed twin pack of Fifth Doctor and Master features a Doctor who strikingly resembles not Peter Davison (although the Anthony Ainley Master looks fine) but Conservative leader and Prime Minister of Great Britain, David Cameron! Doctor Who fans are baffled by this release – and it does raise some interesting questions as to the requirements for licensed manufacturers to attempt to render a reasonable looking figure, one that at the very least should look like the person it is allegedly modelled on! The new Fifth Doctor and Master Planet of Fire double pack is available exclusively from Forbidden Planet for £24.99. Posted: 26 Jul 2010 08:55 PM PDT Moving away from drawings and paintings this week, the Art for Hearts charity auction has unveiled its latest lot: an autographed print of a book cover proof from Doctor Who digital designer Lee Binding! The cover is designed to wrap around Doctor Who: Starships and Spacestations, which is a self-described "Gallery of Spacecraft from Across the Universe." Well, the Whoniverse anyway. But when you consider that the Doctor, his TARDIS, and all the monsters he encounters are in fact real, I suppose you can say that the spacecraft in question are indeed a part of our own universe. But you wouldn't be getting the actual book if you win this one, only the cover. But hey – the cover is signed by the bloke who arranged it, so that's something you don't see every day, right? If you want to buy the actual book, so you can rip off the cover and replace it with your auction prize, I hear it's going for £5.20 on Amazon these days! May this cooler and more authentic cover spend its time successfully "Binding" your book for years to come! (Sorry, I had to.) To bid, click here, and you'll find yourself on eBay. Deadline is 1 August. Keep an eye out for more of Lee's covers in the future of this auction! Ian Stacey said on his blog for the cause,
Which means that if you don't win this round, you'll still get five more chances to own a signed print of a Doctor Who book cover! As for this particular piece, Stacey mentions:
So it's only slightly smaller than your average magazine cover. Not bad if you're looking to frame it and hang it up on your wall! Art for Hearts, which you'll know of by now if you've been following us for a while, is an auction of Doctor Who art that sends all of its proceeds to the research of organ transplants. To keep the interest in each individual piece of art, one painting, sketch, book cover, or other creative medium is sold every week, and this is the fourth week of this year's event. Last week's sale was the first of three Alister Pearson prints of a painting of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, which met an owner for £26.00! Browsing through the blog, I'm counting at least 23 works that remain to be sold, which amounts to 23 more weeks of the auction, or just over five months. You'll know it's over when we cease to report on it after the first week of January! I treat it with humour, but the auction really does have an excellent purpose. Think of all the money a total of (at a minimum) 27 weeks can raise! Hats off to Mr. Stacey!

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 05:50 PM PDT How's this for an… erm… "plot" twist? Unless you've been away in the TARDIS for a while, you probably know about the infamous Johnny-Depp-as-the-Doctor-in-movie story that recently left Russell T. Davies wallowing in a mud bath of phone calls and e-mails demanding the truth, taking time away from his preparations for Torchwood Series 4. Needless to say, the Dethroned King of All Who was a bit put off by the incident, but he couldn't help but laugh a little (and neither can we) when he learned of the rumour-creator's pitch of the movie:
Perhaps this is an appropriate time time to exclusively reveal that it was, in fact, me who started the rumour, and now my feelings are hurt because Russell T. Davies doesn't like my idea for a story. There, you see, I've just begun a falsified tale of my own, and now our dear editor, Christian Cawley, will have to spend weeks denying it to all you faithful Kasterborous readers. At any rate, a massive high-budget shoot in Africa probably wouldn't fit Depp's schedule at the moment; the "David Tennant of Hollywood" (in terms of his popularity with the ladies; I do like ol' MacDonald) is currently continuing to cash in on a certain Disney attraction, with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides due in theaters next year.
