TARDIS Mailbox

Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:02 AM PDT

What does a powerful Time Lord do when he gets an overload of fan mail through the TARDIS letterbox? He turns to the only person he could do, his mother!

Doctor Who star Matt SmithMatt Smiths mother Lynne Smith has talked to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo revealing that she helps out the actor's fan mail when he returns to the family home when he's not acting.

Lynne explained:

"Matt is really pleased and proud I have taken this on but obviously it is harder because when I see Matt I usually have a felt tip pen and 1,000 cards for him to sign. Every card that is sent out is personally signed by Matt and I think it is important to have that personal touch… all I do is handle the signed autograph requests, all the fan mail goes to the BBC or his agent and it comes to a PO Box number to be picked up every week."

As you can imagine, Matt is swamped with letters from fans of all ages, ranging from school children right up to adults in their 90's! Lynne spoke about Matt's appeal to the different generations of fans:

"I think the older generations perhaps go to the theatre and appreciate his acting skills. But there is a new audience coming along who liked the character and moments such as in the first episode when he has fish fingers and custard."

Lynne also mentioned that some of the fans want to follow in Matt's footsteps by being actors and some just want to spend time with their favourite of Doctors:

"A lot of the letters have been really aspirational, a lot of people want to be actors, then you get the letters from five or six-year-olds asking if he can come to their house for tea. He gets lots of invitations to fetes and schools and obviously he can't go to all of these".

This was bound to happen as not only is Matt playing one of the most well known and popular roles on television but he is also extremely good at it. The newspaper asked how the family were coping with his new found fame:

"I have been completely surprised by it all. The problem is that, because he is my son, you don't think there will be all these people writing in, but I have been overwhelmed by the support for him…I don't mean that to sound silly, that is just how I feel. I have to separate Matthew as Matthew and the Doctor as the Doctor. He is our son, but also the 11th Doctor…

"It does affect you in the way that, when we are out with him, people will come up for autographs and pictures and, from that point of view, our level of privacy is probably different; but it is not me and my husband they are interested in, it is Matthew."

If Matt keeps producing amazing performances as he did for the 2010 series of Doctor Who then his family are going to need a few more PO Box's for the years to come!

Torchwood Goes Deeper

Posted: 06 Aug 2010 05:41 AM PDT

Forbidden Planet has listed a new Torchwood book on its website that has grouped together essays by experts that uses the show as a focal point for some scholarly debates.

Illuminating Torchwood by Andrew IrelandEntitled Illuminating Torchwood, written by Andrew Ireland, the book looks at some of the themes and storylines of the Doctor Who spinoff and the questions that they raise.

"Created as a spinoff of Doctor Who, the BBC television series Torchwood is a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy, with much more of an adult flavor [sic] than its progenitor. With its memorable characters, adult language, subversive humour, and openly homosexual and bisexual storylines, Torchwood provides a wealth of material for scholarly analysis and debate.

"Using Torchwood as its focal point, this collection of essays by experts and enthusiasts provides an interpretive framework for understanding the continually developing forms and genres of contemporary television drama."

Like a good book? Like it even more when said book leads on to interesting almost unanswerable questions that can provide hours of Doctor Who and Torchwood related chatter with your friends? Then Illuminating Torchwood is just for you!

By visiting www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk you'll be able to buy the tome for £11.40. Considering that other retailers are asking nearer the 30 pound mark (it's true, search the title on Google) you're getting roughly two thirds off!

Regeneration Figure Exclusive

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 11:23 PM PDT

Doctor Who figures - Fifth Doctor post regenerationCheck out those burgundy threads! In a Forbidden Planet exclusive fans can get their sweaty mits on a Fifth Doctor action figure decked out in Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor threads.

The figure is modelled on Peter Davison's first full appearance as the Doctor in Castrovalva which saw him suffering from post regeneration trauma.

Crashing the TARDIS on the planet Castrovalva he slowly realises the planet is nothing more than a paradoxical, wibbly wobbly trap created by the dastardly Master and his beard.

The figure captures a significant moment in Who's history leading into an era where many first began to fall in love with the adventures of a mad man in his blue box.

Now all we need is a Watcher figure and the dying moments from Logopolis can be recreated again and again.

The figure costs £14.99 from Forbidden Planet and can only be shipped to the UK and Ireland.

Karen Gillan Outcast

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 07:00 PM PDT

Amy Pond actress Karen Gillan goes from small screen to big screen this Autumn as a member or the cast of British horror flick Outcast.

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan appears in horror movie OutcastFrom brothers Colm and Tom McCarthy, Outcast features James Nesbitt (from Steven Moffat's Jekyll) alongside Niall Bruton, Kate Dickie, James Nesbitt, Hannah Stanbridge and our own Ms Gillan.

According to IMDb, the premise of the movie is as follows…

Cathal (Nesbitt) is a killer who is pursuing his former lover Mary (Dickie). Mary, a woman who comes from an ancient and magical celtic race, and her son Fergal (Bruton), hide in an outlying district of Edinburgh and use magic to protect themselves, but Cathal is determined to out smart them.

Local residents begin to die at the hands of an unknown life force, but is Cathal the killer, or is he trying to destroy the beast?

It's a fascinating idea and should be 2010's addition to the resurgence in British horror movies over the past 10 years. A preview of Outcast will be screened on Friday, August 27 for Brit horror fans at the FrightFest event.

Meanwhile Karen has been snapped dressed in leather. No, it's true – just days after we collected a list of recent press reports on her sartorial elegance and typical lifestyle for a lady her age, another one comes along…

TV Doctor Hearts The Doctor

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 10:00 PM PDT

Former ER heartthrob loves Doctor Who! No, not THAT one (nor even Goran Visnjic) but Noah Wyle, who admitted to io9 that he still has a Doctor Who scarf he had as a teenager.

The actor who played Dr. John Carter on the NBC medical drama for fifteen years confessed that his mother had knitted him a scarf resembling the seemingly endless and inconvenient scarf worn by Tom Baker.

"I still have [the scarf]," he laughed.

And like most Who fans of a certain age he's already trying to pass on his love of the show to his seven year-old boy but wants to wait until he's old enough;

"He's not quite hip to Doctor Who yet," he explained. "I'm waiting, he's almost ready."

Wyle can next be seen in TNT alien invasion drama Failing Skies executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
