French fans launch Doctor Who boxset petition

Doctor Who - The Claws of AxosFor those of us too poor to make it out to Comic Con this year to sample some of the manufactor's Doctor Who Con exclusives, a limited number of the Eleventh Doctor and Scientist Dalek action figure double packs are being made available from the 18th August in UK Forbidden Planet Stores.

The Doctor is modelled on his appearance in Flesh and Stone, where he lost his trademark jacket and comes with a Sonic Screwdriver accessory while the Scientist Dalek is modelled on the orange 'Fiat Dalek' from Victory of the Daleks.

The sets are so rare that there isn't even a notification on the Forbidden Planet site meaning fans are going to have to sacrifice shoe leather to get one.

One fan commenting on the doctorwhosite said that they had already picked up a set in store for a whopping £79.99!

Ebay.com has one of the sets available for $31.00 (about £19.90) which begs the question: What will happen on the 18th and just how much will they sell for?

If that was all bit too expensive for you also released by those cheeky scamps at Underground is The Master & Axon double set. The Master is presented in a spot on likeness of  his first incarnation played by great Roger Delgado from the Third Doctor serial Terror of the Autons.

He also comes in his iconic suit with his Tissue Compression Eliminator weapon accessory and an Axon creature as they appeared together in the adventure The Claws of Axos (Don't you love the way they take the flaws of some of the monsters costumes and makes them part of their design? It would seem odd if the Axon didn't look a little 'baggy'.)

The Master & Axon set will cost £24.99

Both sets are only available to UK and Eire customers.

Français Demande Fans de Doctor Who Sortie en DVD!

Hell n'ont pas dédaigné fureur comme Doctor Who fans!

French Doctor Who fans have launched an online petition for the release of Season Four of the show on DVD, which stars David Tennant as the Doctor and Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.

Doctor Who Series 4 starred David Tennant and Catherine TateFansite Beans on Toast sent a petition addressed to Publishing Director Denis Rostein at France Télévision Distribution demanding that they show respect to the growing Who community in France by releasing the series  uncensored.

The petition chides the company's previous releases of Season Three, where the original English version was missing and Season One where only three quarters of the series was included in the release.

Pleading with Rostein the petition says (via the 'magic' of Google Translate):

We do not ask for a DVD as comprehensive as the British edition, but to simply watch and discover this series as a whole.

There have been no plans to release Season Four for the past year.

The website has promised to take further action if they get enough signatories.

In France Doctor Who is broadcast on France 4 which lists the Doctors age as 750 and calls the show 'Fantastique' while Torchwood is shown on the NRJ-12 network.

In July an exclusive screening of La Onzième Heure took place at Paris' second annual Comic Con along with the first episode of Doctor Who Confidential.

The petition so far has only 157 signatories so click here, battle against Google Translate and sign it, so your fellow Whovians can finally watch the Tenth Doctor's last full season again and again.

Paul Magrs on Demon Quest

Demons, a treasure hunt through time and space and a supposedly light fingered housekeeper- Such barmy, brilliant events can only mean that Fourth Doctor Tom Baker is back, lending his delectable vocals once again to a new Who audiobook- Demon Quest.

Doctor Who - Demon Quest stars Tom BakerWhen the Doctor returns to Nest Cottage, a year after the events of previous Fourth Doctor audio adventure Hornets' Nest, he discovers his housekeeper, Mrs Wibbsey (Susan Jameson), may have taken a component from the TARDIS leaving in its place a bag strange artifacts containing several clues that lead him and Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) across time in a hunt for his housekeeper and the missing part.

Writer Matthew Badham recently sat down to chat with writer Paul Magrs (The Blue Angel, The Scarlett Empress)  posting a full transcript of an interview that had previously appeared in the Big Issue in the north.

Magrs reveals that his love for Tom Baker's Doctor still shows no signs of winding down (when he first met him Magrs gave him some Jelly Babies) much to the joy of his inner 10 year-old:

His first year as Doctor Who was the first year I have any memories of anything at all. He is the perfect Doctor and, like everyone else, I never thought we'd hear from him again.

It's very much Tom's Doctor and no one else's. Only Tom's Doctor talks in this particular way… He's the wittiest, the cleverest and the strangest – and that's what I write for him.

Magrs got the gig writing Hornets' Nest after pitching several 'crazy ideas' which resulted in him being commissioned to write all five parts of 'Nest. A workload he replicated for Demon Quest.

Like Moffat's dark fairytale motif Magrs sees the Doctors world in wintery shadows;

I like to tap into the Gothic spirit of the 70s Who. It's perhaps even more macabre and surreal, the way we do it… For me, Doctor Who was all about dark autumn and winter nights and strange fireside tales… and that's what we do.

He also let slip his designs for Who if he ever took the reigns of the TV series:

I'd bring in some more non-TV writers. I'd set more stories in outer space. I'd bring back the Zygons…

Remeber the BBC's old "celebration" cover version of the Lou Reed classic "Perfect Day", in which a series of legendary music artists and Ronan Keating lent their vocals in series, accompanied by a slick promo video?

Well one bonkers genius Doctor Who fan has decided to replicate the video – using Doctor Who figures!

We particularly love the use of the Ood, the pig alien from Aliens of London, the Sontaran and even the Face of Boe!, but probably topping it all off is the ace bit with Martha Jones and a Weeping Angel!

The Doctor, Romana, And Prime!

Why don't they make adverts like these anymore?  Let's take the TARDIS back to the 1980s Tom Baker episodes, watch them, slice them all up, and insert in between them (like they'd do in America) these Prime computer commercials starring Tom Baker as the Doctor and Lalla Ward as Romana!

Need I say more?  Forget Macs and PCs; buy your Prime today!  It can talk to other computers!

Seems Matt Smith’s Famous Now…

Readers who have been with Kasterborous or similar sites during the past year or so may remember all the questions popping up for months pre-Eleventh Hour about whether Matt Smith was prepared for the same fame that David Tennant dealt with during his, erm, "ten-ure," and whether the former had ever spoken with the latter about what said popularity might taste like.  While we know the two did meet, at least for a little while…

"I spoke to David briefly, he said 'enjoy the ride.'"

Doctor Who star Matt Smith - back when he was never asked for autographs in supermarkets!…we've never really been able to confirm just how much "autograph-in-supermarket" counseling Mr. Tennant provided to Mr. Smith.

But whether Tennant's advice, if it existed at all, was great or small, it seems that Smith's superstar days have arrived.  Take this anecdote reported by Digital Spy, for instance:

"It's weird.  Even going to Tesco is a different experience now.

"I was in a hotel and someone got out a pack of Jammie Dodgers and said, 'Could you sign these, please?'

"But it's fine.  You try to give people some time.  And then you run."

And from the sound of things, the ol' bow tie caretaker has been doing lots more running overseas than on his home soil.

"It was quite unexpected, out in the US."

"Fans in the UK are just as passionate, but they are more reserved, I think."

Good for you, Brits!  Treating the man as just what he is – a man, not some soulless face on the telly who has become quite prolific at signing his name.  Not that you shouldn't ask the bloke to do so if you meet him on the street, of course.

Now Smith's hotel fans just need to find Tom Baker and have him autograph a bag of Jelly Babies.

Rhys Back for Torchwood Series 4

Torchwood series 4 is gearing up for production and wiley Russell T Davies has started dropping his cryptic spoilers for the new series.

Rhys Williams, as played by Kai Owen, with Torchwood Series 4 co-star Eve Myles as Gwen CooperDigitalSpy has reported that Davies cites Gwen Cooper's husband Rhys as a prominent character in series 4.

For those of you who haven't been following Torchwood over its last three series, Rhys (played by Kai Owen) started out as Gwen's live-in boyfriend who had no idea of who she was working for. In Series 2, the couple got married (with some disastrous Evil Dead-style events taking place at the wedding) and Rhys found out about his wife's other life. By Series 3 (Children of Earth) Rhys is fully involved in the action and is helping Gwen to save the world. When we last saw the couple, they were on their own and ready to start a new life while expecting a child.

Now that Torchwood is coming back, so is Gwen and that means hubby Rhys stepping up to help her. Davies commented:

"I can't imagine Gwen without [Rhys]…Rhys is now ahead of the game, as it were. There's no secrets. He's part – they're a team."

Russell also added that it's double good news for actor Kai as he's just had a baby in real life as well:

"He's just had a baby himself in real life, so he's very happy."

So what do we all think? Do you want more of Rhys running around after Gwen and trying to keep up with her hectic lifestyle? Or would you prefer him to be killed off, Ianto style?

Torchwood Series 4 will air on the Starz network in America in 2011, with a UK broadcast expected the same year.

Art For Hearts: Colin Howard

First of all, my apologies for not covering last week's Art For Hearts item; I was busy regenerating and I didn't have access to a computer. In case you're curious, last week's sale was a Colin Howard signed print featuring the Hartnell Doctor, which sold for £18.36.

But if you're a Colin Howard fan and you missed that piece because I had to go and turn into the Sixth Patrick (eh? You regenerated? – Ed), don't fret! This week's print, a marvelous depiction of the Troughton Doctor, has also been crafted and signed by Mr. Howard!

Art For Hearts organiser Ian Stacey made a comment on his blog about several of the Howard creations in the auction (there are more to come) including this week's:

Matt Smith as Dr Watson?

Now that Matt Smith has settled into the role of the Eleventh Doctor, it's hard to think of him playing any other "big" role at the moment. But if you pause for just a second, imagine that things had gone a little differently a few years ago and some different producers had been in charge of BBC's Sherlock.

Doctor Who star Matt SmithBecause as Doctor Who and Sherlock Executive Producer Steven Moffat had already cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes, the role was still open for an actor to play Doctor John Watson. And along came Matt Smith himself, all wide eyed and excited. That's right, barmy and eccentric Matt wanted to play the role of straight laced John Watson. He didn't get it (obviously) and according to Steven Moffat, here's why:

"He didn't have a chance in hell of getting it because he was clearly more of a Sherlock Holmes than a Dr Watson…there was also something a bit barmy about him – and you don't actually want that for Dr Watson. You want somebody a bit straighter."

Moffat did commend Smith on his audition and how he went about it:

"He gave a very good account of himself and you could feel the effort in him clamping down on his barminess in order to do the audition."

A few days later Matt was cast as the Eleventh Doctor, so obviously Moffat noticed straight away that he was leading man material.

Sherlock Holmes and the Doctor have always had parallels that have been observed and have even worked together (in the Virgin New Adventure book All Consuming Fire). If you've been watching Sherlock on BBC One, you can see how Cumberbatch might have approached the role of the Doctor, had he pursued the part. Reversely, by watching Matt Smith as the Doctor, you can see what he would've brought to Sherlock.

Now if only they could do a crossover…

Womb With a Review

The Hollywood Reporter (reporting from Hollywood) has posted an interesting review of Womb; the Matt Smith staring Cloning drama which has just been released Stateside.

The film sees Smith playing Tommy, the love of Rebecca's (Casino Royale's Eva Green) life who is killed in a car accident only for Rebecca to 'replicate' him, baring him as her child until he reaches his deceased forebearer's age; at which point she begins to make kissy faces at him.

It's only later when Tommy returns to her with a new squeeze that Rebecca starts her shifting murderous eyes over the Kitchen knife: Does she kill her child? Does it have the same rights as a regular human? Would you shack up with your child if it looked like Matt Smith?

All these questions and more are seemingly ignored by Hungarian filmmaker Benedek Fliegauf who The Reporter had high hopes for:

If the Hungarian writer-director, working in English, had been willing to strike out more boldly, the answer to these questions would have some power, and the film might have become more than an intriguing premise and pretty pictures.

Frustratedly; the film also fails to back up its BIG arguments and quickly becomes bored with its salient points:

Fliegauf's screenplay raises the issue of cloned humans being the victim of prejudice just like any other alien, legal or otherwise, but just as soon drops it. He toys with the ethical issue of human cloning but runs away from it too.

The Reporter does see some interest being sparked in the film by the growing international fame of Matt Smith but can't see the film 'going forth and multiplying.'

A New World for Torchwood

Torchwood: The New World - Captain Jack

As reported in Doctor Who: Podshock, the Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood is being relaunched in the US on the Starz network.

The HollywoodReporter.com has an article reporting that name of the rebooted series in the US is Torchwood: The New World. Like last year's acclaimed Torchwood: Children of Earth I would suppose. It is to be ten episodes which to my understanding are telling a story much the same way as Children of Earth did with its five episodes run.

'Torchwood' gets new title: 'The New World': "Starz' 'Torchwood' reboot will be titled 'Torchwood: The New World' and creator Russell T Davies gave some insight into the storyline.

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is 'like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers.' Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

It is a momentous episode for the DWO WhoCast for many reasons.

Firstly, it's the last episode before Matt Smith shows us what he is made of in Series 5 of Doctor Who.

It is also the last episode as hosts for Trevor, James and Tom.�

They have decided to move on from the DWO WhoCast and create their own brand new podcast, over at www.thedoctorwhopodcast.com.� It's name, surprisingly enough, is The Doctor Who Podcast.

But before they head off to podcasts anew, the boys cover the rest of the news before Series 5 hits our screens on April 3.

So if you still want Trevor, James and Tom talking to you about Doctor Who, head on over to The Doctor Who Podcast website.� There is an episode over there already for you to sample.
