| Nigel Planer joins Doctor Who Live Posted: 25 Aug 2010 01:06 PM PDT Former star of The Young Ones, Nigel Planer is to take a lead role in the upcoming Doctor Who Live Tour.Planer is best known for his role as TV hippy Neil in the classic comedy series but he has also appeared in many West End musicals, including Evita, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Wicked and Hairspray. The live show, first announced in May, is touring nine UK cities this Autumn and will feature Daleks, Cybermen, Clockwork Droids, Silurians and Weeping Angels. Planer will act as the production's lynchpin, starring as travelling showman Vorgensen who journeys the galaxy spreading tales of the Doctor's exploits and using his 'minimiser' gadget he can conjure up any of the Time Lord's foes for his audience. Looking forward to the production Planer said I'm incredibly excited to be joining Doctor Who Live and this role is something of a boyhood dream come true. My character Vorgenson, who has been developed specially for the show by Steven Moffat, is the Greatest Showman in the Galaxy and using his incredible invention, The Minimiser, he can make any Doctor Who character appear on stage as part of his travelling show dedicated to his hero. Matt Smith will appear via filmed sequences which have been made just for the stage show and renowned illusionists The Twins have devised stunts which will enable a Dalek to be seen flying during the performances. Actor Nick Briggs, who has voiced numerous monsters for the series including Daleks and Cybermen, will also be in the live cast, playing Winston Churchill in addition to some of the villains. The tour begins at London's Wembley Arena on October 8 with further details at www.doctorwholive.com. | ||

| The 1996 Doctor Who Movie to Get a US DVD Release Posted: 25 Aug 2010 08:07 AM PDT Earlier today I got some brilliant news for all North American Doctor Who fans. Fellow Doctor Who podcaster, David Hooie released an unusual for him short podcast. Within the podcast one of the guys in charge of the Restoration team had the excellent news That the 1996 TV movie had just got the go ahead for a US release, after some hard negotiations with Universal, the owners of the rights in the US and Canada. For the full story follow this link. | ||
| Posted: 25 Aug 2010 07:43 AM PDT Doctor Who is back… and it's about time. No really, it is about time. It's only been 14 years since Doctor Who the TV Movie – starring Paul McGann in the title role – was first broadcast on American and Canadian TV, and still to this day we don't have a DVD release of this story. Heck, we don't even have a VHS release of this story.
The news broke on Hoo on Who's podcast blog earlier today and can be heard at hooonwho.libsyn.com. But if you don't want to listen to the pod cast – can't see why you wouldn't since it is very short and a good listen – just stick you head out the window and listen to all the lucky Doctor Who fans singing and dancing for joy in the streets over this news. Why are they so excited? Weren't you reading above? It's only because it's the TV Movie, in North America, Australia, and New Zealand on DVD! Not enough for you? Ok, how's this: not only are we getting the movie itself, but it's also going to be the new DVD release from the UK Revisitation Box Set with all the bells and whistles. How's that then? Wait, is that singing I hear? Yes, yes it is… Madame Butterfly if I am not mistaken.

| Posted: 25 Aug 2010 04:58 AM PDT Will future generations be able to remember important BBC television episodes that are lost forever? If researchers at the BBC have anything to do with it, then yes. Helen Papadopoulos (the Project Manager) has been set the task of chronicling a complete and comprehensive broadcast history by the BBC from its inception in 1922, the results will then be published online for the public to view and they're getting the episode information from back issues of the Radio Times. Many of the BBC's early broadcasts were wiped from their archives to make space for newer shows. It was only in the 1970's that they decided to keep their original broadcasts for future generations to enjoy (thank goodness, imagine if they'd deleted Genesis of the Daleks, Earthshock or – even worse - The Twin Dilemma!). This means that classic BBC shows such as Hancock's Half Hour and Doctor Who are missing episodes from their earlier series – in particular a massive portion of episodes from 1966-1969 covering Patrick Troughton's tenure as the Second Doctor. In many cases, Radio Times contains the only information known about the episodes, writing on a BBC blog, Helen commented:
Soon, nearly 400, 000 pages from the popular television magazine will be available online. Check the BBC website at www.bbc.co.uk for more details.
| Posted: 25 Aug 2010 03:58 AM PDT Actor, comedian and voice of supercomputer Mr Smith, Alexander ("Zander" to his friends) Armstrong has revealed in interview with Digital Spy that he would love to appear on-screen in Doctor Who or even The Sarah Jane Adventures.
When asked about his involvement with Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, meanwhile, Armstrong replied:
He was also able to hint on a few things coming up in the next series…
Series 4 of The Sarah Jane Adventures is expected to air from late September/early October. Meanwhile, Alexander can currently be seen as one half of comedy duo Armstrong & Miller on BBC One on Monday evenings.

| TV Movie coming to North America Posted: 25 Aug 2010 02:29 AM PDT 2|entertain has confirmed the 1996 TV Movie will be released on DVD in North America. The news was given by the Commissioning editor of the Doctor Who range, Dan Hall, in an exclusive interview with Hoo on Who. The TV Movie stars Paul McGann in his one television appearance as as the Eighth Doctor. It was made as a co-production between Universal Television, BBC Television, BBC Worldwide, and the Fox Network and as a result the DVD rights outside the UK were not, until now, available to 2|entertain. Following discussions between 2|entertain and Universal the situation has now changed giving North American fans a chance to own a Region 1 version of the story for the first time. The DVD is expected to be released in North America within the next twelve months. It will also be released in Australia and New Zealand. | ||

| Posted: 24 Aug 2010 08:18 PM PDT Anyone seen Sally Calypso lately? The poor souls stuck in a 60-mile-long traffic jam in China might well expect to…
Doctor Who fans might recall how the Tenth Doctor took companion Martha Jones to the far future in the 2007 episode for her first trip in the TARDIS – and found a dystopian nightmare, where the "perfect" world he'd visited with Rose Tyler a few months before had been replaced by a run-down, drug-fuelled, Macra-invested cesspool, where the remaining humans on New Earth travelled a few feet every day in a never-ending traffic jam. While the vehicle owners outside Beijing might not be at the mercy of Macra if they fly too low, there is every chance the situation could turn nasty. The Gridlock scenario is just one of several occasions over the past few years in which real life has imitated the art of Doctor Who.

| First Look: Doctor Who Christmas Special 2010 Posted: 24 Aug 2010 07:14 PM PDT
It's finally arrived, the very first publicly released picture from the Doctor Who 2010 Christmas special and it's giving away nothing! The picture is shaping up on Steven Moffat's promise for this special to be the most "Christmassy Special yet". There's snow-lots of snow and the Doctor and the TARDIS. And that's it. Plot and details of this years special are being kept under wraps (and, one imagines, being kept under lock and key in a Pandorica-style jail guarded by Steven Moffat dressed as a Roman centurion) but if the rumours are anything to go by we could be seeing a return of the Yeti, last seen in the London Underground system causing trouble for the Second Doctor and his friends in The Web of Fear. At this point though, nothing has been confirmed at all. Filming on Matt Smith's very first special has pretty much finished now so the TARDIS team should be moving forward shortly to commence shooting on season 32 (how strange that still is to type considering that five years ago Doctor Who was considered a rusty old show). As far as we're aware both Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are back to play Amy Pond/Williams and Rory Williams respectively but how long either one remains aboard the good ship TARDIS is anyone's guess. You can see the full sized Christmas Special picture by visiting DenOfGeek. The Doctor Who Christmas Special is expected to broadcast on 25th December 2010.
