| Verity: Men, Bitches and Daleks Posted: 06 Dec 2010 01:15 PM PST The short film about Verity Lambert and her struggle to get Doctor Who made is now available to watch online. As we reported last month the film was written by Thomas Cowell and Joey Guy who are film students from the University of Central Lancaster. London, 1963. Verity Lambert, the woman in charge of the BBC's new children's show, is facing somewhat of a struggle. Not only has she got to make a TV show with the entire scope of time and space (on a small budget), but she also has to face bitchy co-workers and arrogant male peers. "Verity" shows how she fought for the Daleks right to exist on TV, battled against jealous co-workers and ended up triumphant with a national success on her hands. | ||

| This Week In Doctor Who - December 6, 2010 Posted: 06 Dec 2010 07:55 AM PST This Week In Doctor Who – December 6, 2010 New computer and no template to use. That's weird. So where was I? Ah yes, Doctor Who schedules. Due to production issues on this edition, it is going out on a Monday evening US time. Also, I am releasing the main Doctor Who listings before finishing the Torchwood listings or Section B (Sarah Jane, K9, and the PBS Doctor Who broadcasts). If you are reading this through the "Doctor Who News Page" or via the "Gallifreyan Embassy", the extra sections will appear at the end of the page as they're completed. I hope to publish a few more times in December as I put the column back together again. Hope to be truly "weekly" again by January. Still, we are not here to discuss my technical problems. We're here to find out when our favourite show is on TV all around the world. | ||

| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 06:38 AM PST Coming back to the writing fold this month is Andrew Smith, who last wrote for Doctor Who in the 1980's with his opening story for the E-Space trilogy, Full Circle. The story was considered fresh and exciting by many fans and sees the beginning of a somewhat epic journey for the Doctor and Romana as the encounter swamp creatures and a young Alzarian called Adric. Now, thirty years later, Smith returns to his writing duties all grown up and ready to pit the Doctor against more trials and tribulations. And what we get as a result is a very polished and sophisticated Companion Chronicle titled The Invasion of E-Space. The first thing you'll notice when listening to this audio is that Smith's writing has improved tenfold over the years. Where Full Circle contained an undercurrent aimed at youth and uncertainty, The Invasion of E-Space holds a certain maturity within its words, one that suggests not only three decades worth of experience but maybe even certain weariness to life and its grim trappings. The story is a simple premise, set during the Doctors entrapment in E-Space he and Romana encounter a horde of invaders from N-Space that are capable of breaking down the walls between universes and travel back and forth. Aha, you say, an escape route for the TARDIS team to get through but as always in these scenarios, nothing is that simple. Lalla Ward's reading of this story is something of a particular treat here, as her authoritive tones lend well when she is facing off against the power hungry villains of the piece. What's amusing to notice is that the reading she gives of the Fourth Doctor is less of his character from the show and seems to be more in the style of Tom Baker himself, arguably something he did during his tenure yes but there's something amusing about hearing his ex-wife listing some of his less desirable characteristics that raises a smile. Adric gets less to do in the story and is very much a background character, reduced to a few questions and getting injured towards the climax to provide a dramatic scene or two for Romana to deal with. Ward embraces the character of Adric with a certain immaturity and his tones come across (most of the play) as quite whiney. Is this her interpretation of the character or the actor Matthew Waterhouse? You make your own mind up on that one. Sound design and direction are excellent with The Invasion of E-Space, when the invading fleet break through into E-Space, it's an audio feast-one to sit back and really enjoy as the action rolls out. In fact one might go as far as to say that this makes up for the slightly cheaper effects that were given to us in the 1980's and really does immerse you into another world or in this case, Universe. The benefit of the Companion Chronicles is that they can revisit times and eras of Doctor Who that need a bit a 21st century makeover and deliver on the goods. In the case of the E-Space trilogy, this play has done just that. Building on a strong premise, Andrew Smith has shown that he still has plenty more to offer the Universe of Doctor Who. Now let's not have such a long gap again between stories, eh Andrew? The Invasion of E-Space starring Lalla Ward is available to buy on MP3 or CD from www.bigfinish.com now! | ||

| Posted: 06 Dec 2010 06:24 AM PST This great selection of posters has been unveiled recently by Alex Freeman and they're rather smashing, minimalist tributes to each incarnation of the Doctor. As you can see from this snap of the first six, the posters – available as A3 prints – feature the very specific sartorial motifs of the individual Doctors; for instance the Third Doctor print is a ruffled shirt collar. While fascinating (and beyond those seen here, another 5 are available) there is something I just can't quite fathom. The Fourth Doctor's appearance – hat, scarf, tie, coat, jacket, waistcoat and shirt has been bizarrely reduced to just a scarf on a brown background. My problem with this is that while each of the other prints could quite easily be the Doctor from neck to navel, the Fourth Doctor print couldn't, which I feel is a terrible shame while visibly absolutely referring to the intended Doctor loses the character that the others all have. Hit up Alex Freeman's flickr page for order details and to contact the designer. (Via Technabob) | ||

| Royal Mint issue Amy Pond medal Posted: 06 Dec 2010 05:01 AM PST The Royal Mint have issued a new medal in their Doctor Who Collection, following on from the Dalek, Smiler and Weeping Angels medals released during the summer. The new medal features the eleventh Doctor's companion Amy Pond: One night, seven year-old Amelia Pond found a strange raggedy looking man, who called himself the Doctor, in her back garden who claimed he had a time machine, and promised he'd be back in a few minutes to sort out the bizarre crack in her bedroom wall, through which she could hear voices. But he never did. Indeed, Amelia didn't see him for another twelve years, by which time she was living alone in her house, and was now calling herself Amy. So when the Doctor returned to sort out the crack in her wall for good, Amy tagged along, determined to have the adventure he had promised her all those years ago.To celebrate the Doctor Who series and its characters, the Royal Mint in conjunction with BBC Worldwide, has struck this fantastic collectable medal. Ideal for all Doctor Who fans and children the medal features Amy Pond on one side and the TARDIS design on the other. | ||

| Posted: 05 Dec 2010 11:10 PM PST Hello! I've been naughty - I hope Santa will forgive me! I haven't blogged since January and I feel very guilty. I have been very busy with work for the past six months but am now coming out of that heightened busy state to a more normal "business as usual" way of working so I want to get back to updating the blog and maintaining the news feed more regularly. On the subject of Doctor Who, I just want to say how great Matt Smith is as the 11th Doctor. Quite easy to understand what the producers saw in him at the interview waaay back in the middle of 2008. Wasn't that a long time ago? And doesn't David Tennant seem like a distant memory now that Smith has stamped his personality all over the role? The Sarah Jane Adventures continue to impress me more with each series. I am convinced that Clyde would make an excellent companion to The Doctor. Maybe when Amy and Rory move on, he should fill their shoes? I have high hopes for Torchwood S4 with it being co-produced by Starz - who brought us the fabulously gory and rather rude Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Don't forget to check out the superb "Ultimate Regeneration" book from the nice folk at Kasterborous. It is a compilation of news, reviews and articles covering the first five years of the return of Doctor Who to encompass the RTD area. 50% of the book is new material to put all the varied articles into context - with some of those articles written by yours truly. Check it out here... | ||

| 11th Doctor Christmas Adventure Set 2010 Posted: 05 Dec 2010 09:21 PM PST
I can only assume this is being called a "Christmas Adventure set" solely due to the fact of when it is being released because to the best of my knowledge, Amy will not be wearing her police uniform in the upcoming Christmas special, A Christmas Carol. It would be more fitting to call it 'The Eleventh Hour' Adventure set… though technically the Doctor was still in his 10th Doctor hand-me-down raggedy clothes when Amy was in her kiss-a-gram police uniform. If you want 'The Raggedy Doctor' it is available in a two figure set. This two figure set is available for £11.99. Happy holidays! |
