| A Christmas Carol: UK press reaction Posted: 26 Dec 2010 04:35 AM PST UK press coverage in the aftermath of A Christmas Carol have been muted so far, with only a few of the broadsheets reviewing the episode; of those, both Dan Martin from the Guardian and Phil Hogan from the Observer were positive on what they saw: Dan Martin: Moffat scripts are always ingenious, but A Christmas Carol is a remarkably small-scale caper. There's no malevolent alien invasion force – just Michael Gambon perfectly cast as a lonely old man with a grudge against the world in general and Christmas in particular. Because we need a behind-the-sofa sequence there's the flying shark, but "Clive" (as she was dubbed by the production team to ward off spoilers) turns out not to be a baddie after all. And while we don't want to belittle the lives of 4004 people, the stakes are remarkably low – no threat of enslavement of a population, no nuclear Armageddon circling the Earth, no madmen flirting with the end of reality. Which feels right – because Christmas isn't really about those things. It's about the kind of warm and shameless sentimentality in which this episode deals, a time where it always snows and love always saves the day. A Christmas Carol riffs magnificently and faithfully on the beauty and simplicity of its source material. At Christmas people always talk about the Greatest Story Ever Told in other terms, but this is a sumptuous triumph from start to finish. Read the full review here. Phil Hogan: It was a pity that Sardick's journey to niceness via fear and self-loathing had to bring so abrupt an end to his excellent scathing wit, but I suppose you don't want an audience grinning too much through the heart-thawing and ground-out repentance. Things worked out in the end, though not without some syrupy longueurs as the now twentysomething Sardick fell in love with the fragrant Katherine (playing the fragrant Abigail) only to find – after umpteen slightly uneventful secret outings from her cold prison – that she only had one day left to live. I'm sorry to say that in my mind's eye I could only see hordes of philistines wandering off to the kitchen for a mini pork pie during her big aria, but what's the point of hiring a world-class Welsh mezzo-soprano if you're not going to give the girl a bit of quality emoting time? Read the full review here. However, not everybody was happy with the Christmas serving of Doctor Who, with Chris Harvey of the Telegraph being quite negative about it: Phew, that was a bit rich, wasn't it? I think I've eaten too much. I'm not sure if it was that festive sleigh-ride across the rooftops in a carriage pulled by a giant fog-breathing shark that had been tamed by the sweet song of a cryogenically frozen maiden that did it, but I actually feel rather queasy. Of course, Matt Smith's first Christmas Special as the Doctor had been written with the word "Christmassy" in mind, it's not really for old curmudgeons like me, who got more of a kick out of Michael Gambon's miserly Kazran Sardick when he was sneering and snarling at the beginning of the episode than when he had been thoroughly heartwarmed by the end. But there was just something so overblown about the whole thing, it reminded me of the worst excesses of the Russell T Davies era, when everything just kept getting bigger, louder, more operatic… feebler. Read the full review here. In other places, the Metro concentrated on how Katherine Jenkins was being received by people on social communication tool Twitter, quoting several fans for and against the singer's first acting role. Further reviews may be found from Seenit, Den of Geek and On The Box; further links will be added via Doctor Who in the Media over the forthcoming days. | ||

| Posted: 26 Dec 2010 01:12 AM PST A review for a good Doctor Who episode usually writes itself. Yet with A Christmas Carol I've found myself "umming" an "ahhing". This is the sixth Doctor Who Christmas special that I have reviewed. In that time I have seen aliens trying to take over the Earth with voodoo, giant spiders under the Thames, space liners in attempted insurance scams, Cybermen building a giant Cyber-King under the Thames and the Master replicating his DNA into every human on Earth. Wildly entertaining stuff to one degree or another, but nothing that actually screams out "It's Chrisssssstmasssss!" So what's the problem writing this review? Probably the fact that there is so much going on with this episode. It's more than just a rewrite of A Christmas Carol; if you want a genuine pastiche of the Dickens classic head towards Ben Elton and Richard Curtis' 1988 classic Blackadder's Christmas Carol, but if you're looking for something as deep and as meaningful as the original then Steven Moffat is the man for you. What The Grand Moff has done with A Christmas Carol is basically succeed in blending a serious threat with a true and meaningful Christmas tale that mixes the old timey-wimey nature of Moffat's Doctor Who with a recognised parable. Now almost a day later I have been baffled by some posts on Facebook, Twitter and the like expressing dislike for the episode. I am absolutely bewildered by what these people were expecting in an episode called A Christmas Carol. Cybermen? A mouthy bride? John Simm over-eating? Timothy Dalton over-acting?
There have been a few voices of discontent over the wonderful Karen Gillan following Series 5; where they not content to see the actress sidelined in favour of the guest case? And just what did the noisy types who have been dismissing this episode think of Matt Smith, an actor who seems to inhabit the Doctor more and more each time he is on screen? Did no one notice how at times he outshone his illustrious guest star? A Christmas Carol naysayers seem to have not "got" the episode; but what was there to "get"? Was it as empty and vapid as some have claimed? Well at risk of turning this into a defence (which the story does not need) rather than a review, A Christmas Carol features such dark themes as terminal illness, child abuse, a crashing spaceship (carrying Amy and Rory in full adventurous honeymoon attire plus over 4000 others), killer sharks in a child's bedroom and the horrifying idea that passengers should have to sing for their lives. And at the centre of all of this is a man who made it all happen, Kazran Sardick. A miserly bully played with absolute perfection by none other than Sir Michael Gambon. Names like that don't just wander into Doctor Who every day. As one of the key cast members of the Harry Potter movies, Gambon has held a few audiences in the palm of his hand on Christmas Day, and A Christmas Carol was no different. Rising to the task as a younger Sardick was hitherto unknown Danny Horn, whose scenes with the beautiful Abigail Pettigrew did enough. Enough to carry final scenes of Abigail and the older Sardick beyond "young girl and old man" and into the narrative state of life-long lovers. While the clues to Abigail's short lifespan were there for anyone paying attention to see, the final scenes of A Christmas Carol, where we learn that not only does she possess a wonderful, day-saving voice but that she will enjoy one last Christmas with snow before dying was very, very moving for this particular Doctor Who fan. Katherine Jenkins may never have acted before but the combination of her own natural talents and a superb script, coupled with some expert direction from Toby Haynes prevented this from ever becoming an issue. Previous special episodes of Doctor Who wrapped up in the framing of a Christmas themed adventure have failed to deliver anything more than spectacle. A Christmas Carol is not one of them. As a long term admirer of The Christmas Invasion, a few hours of reflection on the issue of "which Doctor Who Christmas special does the job best?" has lead me firmly to the conclusion that A Christmas Carol isn't just the first truly "Christmas" special, but it is also the best of the bunch to date.

What are you doing reading this blog? As part of its 12 Days of Spacemas, Space is holding its Doctor Who Marathon right now! You can watch all the Christmas specials in order, leading up to the Canadian debut of A Christmas Carol at 9 PM tonight (ET). And to make the day more fun, we have TARDIS files for you! We have entries for every story seen today including:
We probably won't have a TARDIS file for A Christmas Carol til tomorrow or the day after, but we'll have a place for you to discuss it up after it airs (NO SPOILERS til then!) And for those who are asking…with the DWIN site hacked earlier this month, we lost a year's worth of data and a year's worth of TARDIS files. We're working on putting back up Series 5 (several of the entries were completely lost) and then Series 1 (and finishing it) and Series 2.

| Posted: 25 Dec 2010 09:19 PM PST It's been almost 12 months since David Tennant was last on our screens as the Tenth Doctor in The End of Time. But what has he been doing since then? We all have shows that we love, Doctor Who being our one common bond that brings us to places like Kasterborous. Sometimes those who create the show each week might not share our same enthusiasm it. Sometimes you find an actor that goes above and beyond the call of duty and Doctor Who has been lucky in that it had many actors in it's family that felt this way. So it should come as no surprise that retired Doctor, David Tennant, can out of the shadows to record a DVD special feature for the fans of Doctor Who. And this will drop in at number five in our "top 5 things David has done since he left Doctor Who". 5) Recording a special DVD feature for the Revisitations II Boxset. While some other Doctors I could name left the part behind them for a long time after they departed the show, David is like the gift that keeps on giving. And for that, I am thankful. Due out sometime next year you can be this feature will be one that the fans are most anxious to see. 4) David on PBS. It might not mean much to some fans out there not aware of what PBS is, but here in America PBS stands for Public Broadcasting System. Sort of like the BBC in that the public pays for it, but instead of a license fee it is strictly donations. PBS is where most of the US Doctor Who fans would have first discovered Doctor Who or as most will call him "The guy with the Scarf?" So having a former Doctor Who hosting Masterpiece Contemporary made a nice circular return to PBS for me. 3) Best Dressed. What? "Doctor Who" and "Best Dressed"? Well, maybe not Doctor Who, but Dr Tennant was awarded the Best Dressed award from GQ online (so says his fan site www.david-tennant.com, so who am I to argue?) I was particularly glad to hear this because I for one thought David was a very stylish guy. 2) Welcome to America. David Tennant did more than just PBS. David snagged himself a sitcom pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, and a role in two films, Fright Night and How To Train Your Dragon. While it may not be the break though into the US market that many had hoped it would be, it's a start. The man has talent and anyone can see that, he'll be back I'm sure. 1) Single Father. Go on, try and tell me you didn't watch this series with watery eyes. Sad, sad, sad, yet so good and uplifting too. Which we saw many ranges of emotions from David in his Doctor Who years, none more powerful that his parting episodes, they don't hold a candle to the emotions put forth in this extremely moving story. Quite frankly I'm not sure how he survived it without needing a psychologist. | ||

Doctor Who was the second most watched show on Christmas Day 2010, according to early overnight viewing figures.
Did these viewers not appreciate the sumptuous costume and set design, the wonderful dressing of the locations used to evoke Sardicktown? Was the CGI not good enough? Did they not appreciate the more balanced use of a soundtrack that allowed both music and dialogue to be heard at the same time?

Unofficial overnight figures show Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol was watched by an audience of 10.3 million on BBC One and BBC One HD last night.
