| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 01:06 PM PST With the World Juniors going hot and heavy this reporter feels it's never too early to talk about The 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The 49th edition of the event will be held at the Tuburr Centre on Olympus Mons, Mars in June. This year's number one prospect happens to be a Martian local boy! Azaxyr Jr. is young, gifted and focused… he is also the son of the infamous Federation Leader attached to the Peladon expedition. As number one goaltender for the famed Jane Street Ice Lords. Azaxyr is a self-admitted through and through "Greenie". Axman (as he's known to his friends) says: "I've alwayssssss been a fan of the Greeniesssss, and to be able to play for my hometown hassssss been a dream come true".
When asked if the upcoming NHL draft weighs heavily on his mind he waxed poetically about sport and life. "Hockey and icccccce are eternal. Asssss eternal assssss the revenge I will have on you puny humanssssss and avenge the vile and cowardacccccce murder of my father by the hated Peladoniansssss…THE ICCCCCE WILL RETURN!, THE ICCCCCE WILL RETURN!!, THE ICCCCCE WILL…. um…erg… ahem…by that I mean I'll give my team 110%, leave everything out there, work hard, give it my all, play my game, focus, and…er… God Blesssssssss America???...".

| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 09:27 AM PST David Tennant talks about taking up the role of Jimmy Murphy in the BBC film United: "I am famously not that much of a football fan at all, so when the script arrived I didn't think that it was going to be for me. However, it really knocked me back and the emotional power of the story is what hooked me. The way I saw it was if it was affecting me, then it's one that is going to get to everyone." [Sunday Mail] John Barrowman commented on how he feels the need to get back in shape: "I know I'm good-looking but I'm not egotistical, I have flaws. I have to dye my hair twice a month to get rid of all the grey, Scott doesn't like it grey. I also have these eye-flaps and bags. I have let myself go in the waist area; when I see myself naked, I know I'm heavy and out of shape - I need a hot personal trainer!" [Now Magazine] Guardian critic Vicky Frost writes of high expectations for Steven Moffat: "As the successor to Russell T Davies at the helm of Doctor Who, Moffat had already become one of the few British TV writers to acquire the kind of recognition usually reserved for those on screen. But last summer's Sherlock, which Moffat co-wrote with Mark Gatiss, propelled him to a whole new level. "I've found myself in this situation and, let's be honest, I won't be in it for that long," Moffat says. "Nobody in their right minds could have expected this. It's ridiculous. I can't think of anyone having this much fun in TV at the moment."" [Guardian] Moffat's Sherlock stablemate Mark Gatiss will be appearing at the Mill Arts Centre in Banbury on 7th January in aid of the Banbury and District Samaritans; described as an informal evening hosted by John Arthur, enabling the audience to meet and chat with the actor/writer. [with thanks to Steven Moffat] Alex Kingston is due to be a guest on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS on 6th January. Kingston recently filmed in the UK and US for the next series of Doctor Who (and Matt Smith appeared on the show when shooting in the States in November). [with thanks to Dominic May] Kylie Minogue (Astrid, Voyage of the Damned) has celebrated reaching five years since beating breast cancer. "I had a lot of support from around the world. A lot of it I didn't see or hear, but I felt it. That might sound a little bit cosmic but in that kind of situation you need to reach for any positive feeling that you can. I really felt people's good wishes. Sometimes you don't want to be mollycoddled, you don't want people treating you like you're so ill. But what I found helpful is you have to let them help you. They are grieving as well. You have those moments when you're down and so horribly, horribly low, but you still come up again, so believe in that." [Mirror] | |||||||||||

| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 07:20 AM PST Welcome to 2011, Kasterborites! As you know, we've taken a few days off for full rest and relaxation in order to begin the planning and delivery of some great new features on Kasterborous over the coming months. It's fair to say that at least one of us enjoyed a few drinkies with ice courtesy of a TARDIS ice bucket… We've got through a remarkable amount of new articles – news, reviews, interviews and opinion pieces – since The End of Time aired on New Year's Day 2010, with Kasterborous enjoying its most popular year yet. So it makes sense that we should plan big for 2011! However, you may well notice a slight shift away from news reporting. The fact is, there is so much of it about these days and we've probably been guilty of trying to cover everything (except K9, for obvious reasons). As such – and we'll be the first to admit it – our standard of reporting has gone down and there have been a few items that have been low on both accuracy and opinion. As opinion is the one thing that sets Kasterborous apart from the other Doctor Who news sites, we're planning on bringing it back – big time. In addition, over the next few days, weeks and months, you can also look out for:
…and to be honest, quite a bit more. By the time you read this, we should have caught up with the most important news items from the past 10 days, so it only remains for me to remind you to vote in the Doctor Who Christmas poll (the results will be revealed on Friday) and to wish you a quite smashing 2011!
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:38 AM PST Taking place on Friday, an evening with Mark Gatiss sees the (comedy) actor, novelist, broadcaster and dramatist interviewed by actor John Arthur. This should be a pretty entertaining evening – Gatiss has written many TV scripts, not just for An Evening with Mark Gatiss is billed as "an informal evening" and there is the additional chance to meet and chat to the man himself. The event – which takes place 7.30pm on Friday 7th January – costs £10 and is in aid of Banbury and District Samaritans. Book tickets via The Mill Box Office on 01295 279002, or drop in to The Mill Arts Centre, Spiceball Park, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX16 5QE; and find out more at www.themillartscentre.co.uk. | Posted: 03 Jan 2011 05:38 AM PST It seems that in the New World we'll still be using social networking sites to spread joy and schadenfreude to all. Torchwood: The New World's Facebook page has spread a little post-Christmas joy by updating the synopsis for the forthcoming Starz/BBC Worldwide series. The synopsis fills us in on what Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen (Eve Myles) have been since the aftermath of Children of Earth; giving us Jack's motivation for returning since the Doctor set him up with Alonso Frame (Russell Tovey) in The End of Time:
New series writer Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Warehouse 13) has also been busy tweeting her excitement about the first table read for episode one:
As the interest builds towards the summer air date, we'll keep you posted on all the latest news on the new series. Torchwood: The New World airs this summer on BBC 1 in the UK and the Starz Network in the USA.
| Posted: 03 Jan 2011 04:44 AM PST They've got delicious food, a tower that won't stand up straight, and the honor of having a certain vampire-fish episode recently set there, and now Italians are about to gain the ability to watch Doctor Who! You heard right – if you're currently based in Italy, you'll be able to watch the best show ever made starting later this month on Rai 4! All five seasons made since 2005 have been acquired, and since the first three have already been beamed through the stars on Italian satellite TV, those same dubs will be used on Rai 4. Translations for Series 4 and 5, which have never been broadcast on the Mediterranean peninsula in question, are currently in development thanks to BBC Worldwide. Broadcast dates and times haven't been confirmed yet, but we do know that it will be January (the month we're in now, in case you had a really bad New Year's hangover) thanks to Rai 4′s Facebook page, where the announcement of the impending first-month-of-the-year broadcast was made followed by a slew of Italian Whovians shouting "GRAZIE!" I'm not fluent in Italian but I think that's supposed to show Rai 4 their much-deserved appreciation. Or it's a warning to the channel to stay away from their carnivorous lawns. | Posted: 03 Jan 2011 01:37 AM PST Okay, a little late on reporting this one, but hey – I've been busy fighting cavities on Marinus (teeth are much more sinister than Voords) with the rest of the Kasterborous staff, so cut me a little slack! If you're already missing last month's Yuletide cheer, why not have a read through the 'All I Want For Christmas' issue of the Fish Fingers and Custard fanzine? Especially if all you wanted for Christmas was David Tennant… you may not have unwrapped him (at least not the real him) this year, but you can always read about his groupies in "An Absolute Fangirl Guide to David Tennant," one of this month's featured articles. Or you can follow Fish Custard editor Daniel Gee and his misadventures in a Glasgow convention, which involve encounters with Nick Courtney (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), Georgia Moffett (Jenny), and Katy Manning (Jo Grant) in rapid succession. Also found within Issue 3′s pages: Bob the Builder Time Lord, a look at the history of Doctor Who computer games, Kasterborous' own Thomas Spychalski on Jelly Babies, and myself on the most recent season of The Sarah Jane Adventures. To enjoy the wonders of Fish Custard without actually eating it, you can download a free PDF copy of Issue 3 to your computer at the fanzine website, an excellent choice for Kindle/iPad users or folks who just prefer reading on a computer. If you'd rather have paper to peruse through, you can also order the printed version for £2 UK, £3 Not-UK. And if you're a Fish Custard superfan (or just want your name printed in the fanzine) you can even subscribe to a year's worth (4 issues) starting with Issue 4 for £8 UK, £13 Not-UK. If you need to catch up on Fish Custard's past, here's the links to Issue 1 and Issue 2. | |||||||||||

| Posted: 02 Jan 2011 09:03 PM PST The full shortlist for the 2011 National Television Awards has been announced, with Doctor Who and Matt Smith up against some tough competition. Following the long-list in September, the early nominations have been whittled down to just four in each category. Doctor Who is nominated in the Drama category against Waterloo Road, Shameless and Sherlock, while Matt Smith is nominated in the Drama Performance category and is up against Ashes to Ashes' Philip Glenister, veteran David Jason (A Touch of Frost) and Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch. There are some names here that might consider the David Tennant-less 2011 National Television Awards to be a case of "unfinished business" so don't expect a default Doctor Who victory… however with Sherlock and Doctor Who battling it out in two categories, Steven Moffat has two chances for glory, as does Beth Willis who previously worked on Ashes to Ashes. Cast your vote at www.nationaltvawards.com – the event takes place on Wednesday 26th January and is aired that evening on ITV1 at ITV1 7:30pm | |||||||||||

| New Year - New Video: The Wheel... In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream Posted: 02 Jan 2011 06:02 AM PST Every year, for the last few years, just in time for the holidays, 'TardisTimegirl' releases an animated Doctor Who related video on YouTube. A holiday treat for all Whovians. Last year, it was the immensely popular, '2001: A Who Odyssey' in which she combines the classic 1968 Doctor Who serial 'The Wheel in Space' with the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' which was released the same year. So when the holidays rolled around this year, I checked her YouTube channel and was disappointed not to see any new animated shorts for this year's holiday season. So I was surprised and delighted to see that a new short was released over the New Year's Day holiday. Once again, using the 2nd Doctor story, 'The Wheel in Space' as the backdrop, she poses the question of what would a trailer look like for it if the once BBC set designer, Ridley Scott (who later went on to direct Alien among other films) made it? What follows is another awesome computer animated (CGI) trailer for Doctor Who: The Wheel in Space done in the style of 1979's Alien film by Ridley Scott. Thank you, 'TardisTimegirl.' Turn off the lights and watch this in full screen mode. Enjoy! | |||||||||||
