| Posted: 08 Jan 2011 08:06 AM PST Continuing directly on from last month's Deimos. We find Lucie Miller being thrown out of a TARDIS and directly into trouble. When we last encountered her, she was hanging up her time travelling boots and settling for a quiet life, away from monsters and alien planets. Her falling out with the Eighth Doctor had led to one of the more bitter Doctor Who departures and certainly left listeners needing a better form of closure on the Lucie Miller saga. And so with The Resurrection of Mars, we start to find out a little more about what happened to her since leaving the Doctor's company and where she'll end up. From the outset, we know that things between Lucie and the Monk have turned sour; he callously dumps her in the middle of an Ice Warrior conflict and dematerialises his TARDIS without so much as a bye or leave. But never fear, the Doctor is near, and Lucie is soon reunited with him and by his side once more. Whilst these two rekindle their special relationship, another couple are set to start travelling together, the Doctor's newest friend Tamsin has begun to see the world through the Meddling Monk's eyes and she likes what she sees. It's a brave move for Big Finish, making a fuss about a new companion all for it to turn out to be a red herring at the end of the day. Some of you may have clocked onto the twist that's been coming and some of you may have had no idea but by the end of this story, Lucie has resumed her travels with the Doctor while Tamsin has become disheartened with him and the decisions he has made and chosen his rival, the Monk. That's the real "meat" of the story; the Ice Warriors become almost a second plot strand that needs tidying up, which writer Jonathan Morris takes care of neatly and tidily. This reviewer will state that the Ice Warriors always bring with them a certain two dimensional quality to audio plays that they never quite seem to break, always hell bent on the same kind of honourable conquest, trying to reclaim what was once theirs. In this story, Morris manages to bring a little more colour to their cheeks making them slightly more threatening and believable than usual. Supporting cast all perform well, Tracy Ann Oberman especially reminding us of a more heartless version of the character she played alongside David Tennant. She clearly has a passion in this piece, playing it with maliciousness and contempt the whole way through. Overall, The Resurrection of Mars is an enjoyable conclusion to this two part story, the Monk and Tamsin will be back, probably flanked with Skaro's finest and we're in store for more fun adventures with the Doctor and Lucie for the next few months. These last few adventures for the Eighth Doctor have lacked certain energy for him, most likely missing his friend, now that she's back, he can hopefully get back on track. Doctor Who: The Resurrection of Mars is available now to purchase on MP3 or CD from www.bigfinish.com. | ||

| Posted: 08 Jan 2011 06:37 AM PST It happens all the time when you go away, you're staying in a hotel or a bed and breakfast and when you leave and you're halfway home, you realise that you've left something there. It's not always something big, maybe a toothbrush or a t-shirt but it annoys you anyway. But some people tend to leave other things of value behind, items that you wonder "how on earth did you forget those?" Recently, an article was published where a spokesperson from Travelodge stated that the oddest thing to be found left behind in one of their hotels was a set of Gold Dentures valued at £6500! Among other valuable items were the keys to a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Hermes handbag worth £8000, a suitcase full of royal memorabilia dating back to Victorian times, a little Bengal kitten called Tiger (!), some 75,000 cuddly toys and (in what is surely the most bizarre thing you could forget) a life-size Dalek! The Spokesperson for Travelodge, Jon Hendry Pickup, commented:
How on earth you could be heading out the door of your hotel and think: "have I got everything? Keys, wallet, watch… is there something I'm forgetting? Did I pack the Dalek? I'm sure I did…" It certainly does take all sorts to make a world!

| Posted: 08 Jan 2011 04:34 AM PST Like to mix up views on Doctor Who with deeper hidden sub contextual references? Then last Wednesday's edition of Thinking Allowed, a BBC Radio Four discussion show, will be right up your street. Featuring Marc Edward DiPaolo, a US academic, the show not only focuses on how the character of the Doctor has changed over the years but also addresses areas such as how his fashion sense has dictated the Doctor compared to the era he has been in. The conversation is based around his article he wrote called "Political Satire and British-American Relations in Five Decades of Doctor Who." Going further in political themes, the show looks at the links between the Daleks and the Nazis, something that has been noted many times before. Joining the panel is Matthew Sweet, who brings things up to date by including themes from the newer series of Doctor Who and how they link into to the past five decades of the show. The show is half an hour long and the fascinating look at Doctor Who from a more subjective point of view starts around half way through. Although certain areas of the discussion have been brought up before (Doctor Who Confidential we're looking at you!) It's still a great listen! You can listen to it via BBC iPlayer using the following link www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00x41nd (With thanks to Leon) | ||

| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:39 PM PST David Tennant and Catherine Tate appeared on BBC's Breakfast this morning to chat about their latest project together. The two are to appear in a production of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, which opens in London's Wyndham Theatre from 16th May 2011. They will be playing the roles of combative lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the play, being directed by Bush Theatre Artistic Director Josie Rourke. This is the duo's first full collaboration together, though they have been firm friends since meeting for the first time on the set of Doomsday and have presented The Jonathan Ross Show for BBC Radio 2 together a number of times. Catherine Tate explained: The idea came from us, we went to them. I'd always wanted to do it, but never said, because I thought it was too close to the Doctor Who time when I was thinking about doing it ages ago, with David - he would have been absolutely my ideal Benedict. And then David just rang in the summer and said "look I'd like to do it, what do you think?" and I said oh god I've been wanting to ask you for years! David Tennant's last appearance on the stage playing Hamlet met with critical acclaim, and he talked about returning to the theatre: Theatre is where we both started really, and it still to me feels like my proper job a little bit. And although I've had the opportunity to go and do lots of exciting things elsewhere on tv, films and so on, going back to the theatre feels like something that I would naturally do. And to get the chance to go to work with your mates and do a play you really wanted to do just felt like an opportunity that was too good to miss. David Tennant is not a stranger to the role, having previously played Benedick in a BBC Radio 3 adaptation of the play alongside Samantha Spiro as Beatrice, broadcast in October 2005 - a couple of months before his debut story as the Doctor, The Christmas Invasion. Catherine Tate is currently appearing in Season's Greetings at the National Theatre, alongside Mark Gatiss and David Troughton. The issue of tickets were discussed on the programme (available to book now from the theatre), especially in regard to how quickly tickets sold out for Tennant's performance in Hamlet - subsequently this morning has seen the booking facilities for the play overwhelmed by fans of the duo trying to obtain tickets! | ||

| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:00 PM PST No longer The New World, the highly anticipated Torchwood Series 4 will have the title Torchwood: Miracle Day and will premiere this July! In a special announcment by BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network, Starz Entertainment, new cast, plot and character details for the new series have been confirmed.
John Barrowman and Eve Myles will return in their roles as Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper respectively, and joining them are a host of familiar faces. ER and Lie To Me star Mekhi Phifer will play Rex Matheson, a C.I.A. operative who joins forces with Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper to fight a global conspiracy that reaches from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai whilst Bill Pullman, best known for his big screen roles such as While You Were Sleeping and Independence Day will take on the role of Oswald Danes, a convicted child killer who survives his own execution to become the most infamous man on the planet. Also making their Torchwood debuts are Alexa Havins as Esther Drummond, a deskbound C.I.A employee who dreams of active duty and who suddenly finds herself running alongside Jack, Gwen and Rex; and Arlene Tur as Dr Vera Juarez, a Washington D.C. surgeon, who ends up on the frontline of medical care on "Miracle Day" advising the government think-tanks on the best course of action for the world's population. OK – here's the big plot summary that we've all been waiting for: The plot of Miracle Day is the most explosive Torchwood storyline yet. One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging — they get hurt and sick — but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four months' time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event – someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking "What is Torchwood?", he's drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever. The 10-episode series has been written by a team led by Torchwood creator Russell T Davies who also Executive Produces along with BBC Worldwide Productions' SVP Scripted, Julie Gardner, BBC Worldwide Productions EVP Jane Tranter, and BBC Wales' Bethan Jones. So in seven months time, there will be no new world – just a Miracle Day!
| Posted: 07 Jan 2011 07:54 PM PST A couple of brief updates from the world of classic Who this morning – first, enjoy the image you'll find to the immediate right of this text. If you can't tell by looking at it, it's the box art for 2entertain's February DVD release, otherwise known as the William Hartnell story The Ark. Or at least all the cool people there. Confused? Don't be. Just grab a copy of the aforementioned Fourth Doctor tale, stay up late and press the play button on Friday (well, technically early Saturday) the 14th at exactly 12:30 AM (7:30 PM if you're in the eastern part of United States, the area this particular event was timed for) and tweet away to your fellow Whovians about the happenings of the story using the hashtag #cdwfang! | Batman and Robin Run Ends Wednesday Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:57 PM PST I've been waiting for that big news I mentioned, and it's not being allowed out yet, so I thought I'd share this with you in the meantime. On Wednesday, alongside Knight and Squire #4, Batman and Robin #19 is out. It's the last of my run on the title, and the conclusion of the Absence story. It's been very pleasing for me to have kept the title in the top ten (at #10 and #7 respectively, not that I pay attention, ahem), and thus in a fit state to pass on to the new regular team. You can see the first few pages of the issue, and thus see the start (but not the whole story) of where the Absence is really coming from here. Cheerio! | ||
