| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 09:02 AM PST Back in December we reported that director Peter Hoar had been listed by the Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency as working on an episode of Doctor Who for 2011.Since then, two cast members have now been confirmed for this episode, forming what seems like another duo in the series. The episode itself is currently unknown in the running order for the series. CHARLIE BAKER![]() DAN JOHNSTON![]() Debi Allen Associates lists stand-up comedian Charlie Baker as Fat Man. Baker's television credits include being a panellist on Channel 4's Beer and Pizza Club and BBC2's Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and appearing in The IT Crowd; he also featured as a band singer in the film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. FRANCES ENCELL![]() FERN DEACON![]() Fern has had roles on television in Poirot and in the film Gulliver's Travels, and has appeared on stage in The King and I and Annie Get Your Gun. Meanwhile, Frances has appeared on television in Emmerdale and The Royal, and on stage in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music. Both actresses are enrolled at the Sylvia Young Agency and Theatre School. | ||

2Entertain have recently announced the upcoming schedule for Doctor Who DVD releases (not counting the episodes for the forthcoming season). This includes a number of re-releases of stories that were released early in the DVD range such as The Caves of Androzani, Tomb of the Cybermen, Spearhead from Space (amongst others) with re-mastered pictures and plenty of new extras that weren't provided the first time round. In fact, the only early story released on DVD to not to get a re-released as a special edition is the highly-rated 6th Doctor story Vengeance on Varos. There is a fan campaign of sorts to push for a re-release - to which I will add my voice, as this story is probably crying out for a special edition version than some of the others that have been selected (such as The Seeds of Death and The Three Doctors, which both had plenty of extras the first time round). In addition to improved picture quality and a "Making of" Documentary featuring the likes of writer Philip Martin and script editor Eric Saward (who were not involved in the original - and thus far only - Varos release), here are some more ideas for extras that could be added to a Vengeance on Varos Special Edition release: Tomorrow's Times - review of press comments from the the 6th Doctor era (they are apparently doing one of these for every Doctor, but without a Varos re-release, it's difficult to see where they will fit the 6th Doctor one as all of his stories have been released already.)

| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 06:58 AM PST Have you ever dreamt of being a regular, recognized webcomic artist? Have we got a deal for you! Well, not us per say… but the Doctor Who Reprint Society sure does! As part of their campaign to raise awareness of and gain interest in Doctor Who reprints, Alasdair Shaw and the team at the DWRS are developing a regular web comic called In Print, designed to reveal the funny side of Doctor Who TV-novel connections. Having read the first couple of scripts, we can tell you that it's quite a fantastic project that they're working on, and definitely something worth being involved in if you have the time and the talent. Each comic follows a simple three-panel format, so it doesn't sound terribly difficult (at least to someone like me with absolutely no comic-making experience). If you're interested in the post, which as far as we know is on an unpaid, volunteer basis, send an email to Alasdair at reprint@doctor.com. If you'd like to get a feel for what you'd be in for before you throw your hat in the ring, Al has graciously granted us permission to post the first two scripts of In Print on our forum. If you're not interested in making comics, please refrain from clicking that link, as you may be spoiling yourself from fully appreciating the finished product, which we will definitely be linking to here at Kasterborous! | ||

| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 04:09 AM PST BEWARE SPOILERS! MANY BOFFINS DIED TO BRING US THIS INFORMATION… Snap happy Doctor Who fans caught a very special Kodak moment last week during filming for what is believed to be episode 7 (Game-Changing Cliffhanger!) or part of the odds and sods left over to be shot for episodes 5 & 6 (The Rebel Flesh/Gangers) of the new series – a lone Sontaran keeping vigil over the TARDIS! If it is the Game-Changing Cliffhanger, then it seems odd that the only villain present would be a Sontaran rather given the (unconfirmed) information already released about the Matthew Graham two-parter it seems more likely that this would be from those episodes. Whats more at odds with this picture is the comments made by Piers Wenger that there would be no classic monsters featuring in the new series. So, is this genuine or did the production team dress the work experience kid up to fool those clickety, clicking Who fans? (Or have the BBC finally started work on my Doctor Who script Planet of the Builders?) Let us know what you think of possible return of Mr. Potato Head (via DoctorWho TV)

Overall December was a record month for the iPlayer with 89.7 million requests for TV Programmes. Jana Bennett, BBC Director of Vision, said Large numbers of viewers watched the BBC's channels this Christmas but at the same time a record number were also using BBC iPlayer. Matt Smith's first full story as The Doctor, The Eleventh Hour, still holds the record for the most accessed programme ever on iPlayer, with 2.24 million requests, way ahead of the second placed Top Gear. Every single episode of Smith's first series was in the top thirty accessed programmes of the year, with Doctor Who taking seven of the top ten places. | Posted: 18 Jan 2011 01:28 AM PST Phew, it feels a long time since I've done one of these. I'm on a punishing yet rewarding regime right now, a lot of word count, a lot of exercise, and fitting in anything else of an afternoon is tough. But some of this stuff will go off if I don't do it now, and just for once I have exactly ten things to talk about, so... 1: Hydrocephalus, otherwise known as Dandy-Walker Syndrome, is Una Nemo's condition in my Batman and Robin run. I became fascinated, years ago, by those like Una who remain unaware of having it, but for the vast mainstream of sufferers, it's much more serious. Having created, in the spirit of Batman villains past, an extreme, pop culture depiction, I thought it was only fair to direct people to the reality. Please check out the website of the Dandy-Walker Alliance, where you'll find information about the condition, and an insight into the lives of (particularly the children) that suffer from it. (Thanks to the family members of sufferers who've pointed me towards that.) I feel, in retrospect, that I walked a fine line in using a genuine medical condition as the inspiration for a Batman villain, and hope to make slight amends by increasing awareness. So that's not the last you'll hear of that one. 2: The latest issue of Salon Futura, the new online SF magazine, has, amongst many delights, an interview with me (looking like a tramp) conducted by Cheryl Morgan on the night before BristolCon, and a very interesting podcast about the Graphic Story category in the Hugo Awards, with Cheryl talking to Maura McHugh, the aforementioned Joe Gordon and Geek Syndicate'sDavid Monteith. The links to and info about the titles they cover is a very nice touch. 3: The Art of Pete Woods is always worth a visit, but his latest post is a step by step rendering of how Pete drew a particular panel of Action Comics #898, from script to finished product. It's particularly interesting in that the issue isn't out yet. Do check it out. 4: The Forbidden Planet International Blog is a long-established thing of beauty that has lately been experiencing a drop off in linkage and comments. I should think this is part of the more general problem that blogs face these days, of Twitter being where the comments have gone. (John Scalzi, during the Just A Minute game at the Melbourne Worldcon, memorably heard 'Twitter is killing blogs' as 'Twitter is killing dogs' and went on for about thirty seconds before anyone could correct him.) But still, it's worth popping in and reminding FPI's Joe Gordon of the great service he provides to many different fan communities. 5: Ian Cullen, of this parish, has relaunched his Sci Fi Pulse podcast as SFP-Now. I've always been impressed by the range of interviews he and his comrades source, and they continue to be available as part of the podcast's archives series, as well as new episodes. 6: And speaking of Geek Syndicate, Barry, the other half of that partnership, will be launching the comic adaptation of his novel Fallen Heroes at the Cardiff International Comic Expo... 7: Schizopolitan is a good-looking new review blog covering comics, movies and TV, edited by my old friend and SFX Magazine contributor Saxon Bullock. 8: Lee Sullivan, my artist collaborator on several Doctor Who Magazine comic strips back in the day has a major new project out in February. He's the artist on the comic adaptation of Jonathan Stroud's first Bartimaeus novel, The Amulet of Samarkand. You can see designs, sketches and finished pages from the book on his website. May I suggest that said book would make a good gift for any youngster who you might want to get hooked on comics? 9: As mentioned in a previous post, I'll be signing at Orbital Comics in London on Saturday 19th February, and my fellow guest on the panel that evening will be Paul Rainey, writer and artist of the science fiction/slice of geek life indie comic No Time Like The Present. You can read the first 39 pages of it for free on his site. 10: And finally, from the House of Toast party room at Convergence (the best convention in the world) 2010, it's: Paul Cornell Explains Cheesy Toast from E Sophia on Vimeo. I wonder how many such gems are still to be unearthed in their archives? Let's hope for the best, eh? Until next time, Cheerio!

The Ribos Operation. Reluctantly cancelling his well-earned holiday, the Doctor sets off in the Tardis to trace and re-assemble the six segments of the Key to Time on which the stability of the entire Universe depends. Assisted by the argumentative Romanadvoratrelundar and K9, he lands on the planet Ribos in search of the first segment and finds himself entangled in the machinations of two sinister strangers, Garron and the Graff Vynda Ka. Who are they? Is Garron simply a shady confidence-trickster dealing in interplanetary real estate? Is the Graff Vynda Ka just a power-crazed exile bent on revenge? Or are they both really agents of the Black Guardian, intent upon seizing the precious Key in order to throw the Universe into eternal chaos? Risking his life within the monster-infested catacombs of Ribos, the Doctor has to use all his wit and ingenuity to find out... | Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:40 AM PST As some of our listeners have been noting in the forums and in e-mails, we've recently been experiencing some delivery issues with our overseas orders. While nothing's changed in our shipping methods or carrier, it seems changes have been made to the way packages are shipped abroad and it means orders are moving slower than before. According to DHL, 'Since November 2010, the United States Department of Homeland Security has increased security measures for items carried on passenger airlines. As a result, mail entering the US from around the world, and including the UK, that would normally be sent via passenger aircraft must now travel by other means, including ships and cargo planes. 'Most items, including personal letters and cards, will arrive in the US within a few days of posting. However, these ongoing security issues, combined with the impact of recent severe weather on the movement of mail throughout the UK, are continuing to cause delays to some items bound for the US. The delays mainly affect heavier items, but also affect other items including Destination Sort bags posted under contract by business customers. We're really sorry for these unavoidable delays and are doing everything we can to keep mail moving out of and into the UK.' On top of that, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has declared a Force Majeure which commenced on Monday 10th January 2011, due to the continued heavy snow and high wind alerts crossing the Southeast, Midwest, and travelling up the Northeast region of the US impacting in and outbound mail flows. There will be delays to inbound and outbound mail services in affected areas. Rest assured that packages are still leaving our warehouse as speedily as possible, but items may take longer to arrive than customers are used to. Apologies to those waiting; both we and DHL are doing our best to make sure orders are with you as fast as possible.
| Fleetwood Mac included on Spearhead Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:31 AM PST It has been confirmed that the upcoming DVD re-release of the Third Doctor's first story, Spearhead from Space, will include the previously missing Fleetwood Mac track, Oh Well Part One.Steve Roberts of the Doctor Who Restorations Team, posted in Gallifrey Base, that the track will be included on the soundtrack of the story due for release around the world later this year. The music was present on the original transmission, during scenes of dolls being manufactured at Auto Plastics. Because of rights issues the track was removed from the 1988 BBC Video release and the 2001 DVD Release. The track is now covered by the PPL agreement, the same agreement which allowed the missing Beatles music to be restored to the UK release of The Chase. However, unlike the release of The Chase, the Fleetwood Mac track is covered internationally and so will be included on all versions of the story. | ||
| Posted: 18 Jan 2011 12:17 AM PST We've got a couple of fan-made gems to show you today courtesy of the most recent SFX Spurious Awards… First, to the immediate right of this paragraph, observe the awesomeness that is Bill and Ted surrounded by Daleks. We've gotta hand it to Christopher Jones there for doing what many of us have wanted to do for a long time – exterminate those blasted thieves for nicking the time-travelling phone booth concept off our show! Get 'em, Daleks! At the bottom of this article, you'll find an embedded video that is perhaps even more amazing than a Doctor Who/Bill and Ted crossover… it's a Doctor Who/Mario Paint crossover! Chris Hardwick, that bloke who hosts the Nerdist podcast and sometimes appears on Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show when the latter fellow is in Who-promotion mode, recreated the Smith/Moffat era theme music in Mario Paint! Ten points to Mr. Hardwick! Minus ten points to SFX, who used Hardwick's version of the theme to diss the Colin-Baker-era Trial of a Time Lord mix, which, in this writer's humble opinion, is one of the better ones. Put me in front of a firing squad if you disagree. But make sure you try me and find me guilty first. See what I did there? No? Oh. Well then… Brilliant, eh? Go on, watch it again! | ||

If you're dissatisfied with your Amy Pond figure in her normal outfit, get her Eleventh Hour/A Christmas Carol Kissogram garments instead! This rare example of five-inch-tall plastic miniskirted goodness will be an instant hit with all your mates to whom you show off your Who collection to. Plus, take her out of the packaging and sit her on your pillow and you can fulfill your lifelong dream of falling asleep beside Karen Gillan every night! If you already have the normal Amy figure and were hoping to hear Part 2, you'll want the Silurian Warrior. The RRP of the Police-Pond-Pandorica from Character Options is £9.99; however, if you purchase online through Forbidden Planet, you can save a quid and get it for £8.99 instead!

| Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:53 PM PST The Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa will be reunited again in a new series of audio adventures from Big Finish Productions. "It was wonderful that Janet Fielding decided to reprise the role of Tegan earlier this year for three very successful stories," says executive producer Nicholas Briggs, "and it's even more wonderful that she wants to do more! It's all happened just before Christmas – Mark Strickson flew in from New Zealand, Peter Davison worked around his Legally Blonde and Law & Order schedule, and Janet and Sarah Sutton travelled up to London. Getting them all together is a massively complicated bit of scheduling – but it's worth it!" The mini-series opens in April 2011 with Heroes of Sontar by Alan Barnes, which brings the Big Finish debut of The Sontarans. "We thought the obvious thing to do with the Sontarans would be a very '80s, Earthshock-style, 'capture the bridge' action piece," Barnes tells DWM. "So rather than that, Heroes of Sontar is quite stripped-back – just the Doctor, his companions and a platoon of seven Sontarans trapped in a deserted alien citadel, fighting to survive." "Casting the Sontarans has been an interesting process," adds Briggs. "We initially considered guest star names, but then realized that the most important thing was to make sure the voices were absolutely authentic. We wanted to hire people who would spend time watching The Time Warrior, and mastering those very distinctive rasping tones. In the end, we went for actors who we know very well and work with regularly: Duncan Wisbey, John Banks, Alex Lowe, Andrew Fettes and Derek Carlyle. And we started day one of recording with a 'Sontaran Masterclass' in the studio – just to make sure that everyone was on the same page." Next up in May is Kiss of Death by Stephen Cole, who wrote for this team recently with The Whispering Forest. It's set on an alien world that has a particular significance for young Vislor Turlough… "Kiss of Death came about because Steve Cole and I really rate Turlough," says Barnes, who is also script editing the stories. "We thought it'd be nice to give him a sort of romance – and expand on his origins, perhaps..." Finally June sees the release of Rat Trap by Tony Lee, who has previously written Doctor Who graphic novels for IDW Publishing. The guest star is none other than Terry (Davros) Molloy, who is playing Dr Wallace. "Rat Trap is set on Earth, in 1983," says Barnes. "It's a bit Edge of Darkness-y. If Edge of Darkness had been all about a bunch of laboratory rats conducting experiments on humans in a top secret government complex, that is." | ||
| Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:44 PM PST If you're one who likes wearing Doctor Who clothing (there are plenty of you out there, don't be shy) then you're absolutely going to love this. Website Geeks of Doom has found an online retailer that is selling limited supply of some rather nifty Doctor Who themed shirts for $9 apiece. The picture on the shirt is that of a Time War Dalek surrounded by the blown up pieces of some other famous robots from film and TV. As well as the destroyed remains of the Star Wars robots C-3PO and R2-D2, there is also the body of Futurama's Bender, all of whom seem to have been bested by Skaro's finest. The picture itself is really rather good but it won't be at this price for long, you only have a few hours left as it finishes tomorrow, Tuesday 18th January. Once these shirts are gone, they really are gone. If you yourself (or someone you know) would like one of these then visit the supplier's website now and make someone's day! Available in a black colour, in both men and women's sizes, you can by these garments at www.teefury.com but like we say, hurry because they won't be there for long! (Via Geeks of Doom) | ||

Doctor Who, with his travelling companions, Sarah and Harry, has landed on a desolate planet called Skaro. | Doctor Who And... The War Games - CD cover and details Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:07 PM PST AudioGO have sent DWO the cover and details for the forthcoming CD release of Doctor Who And... The War Games. Mud, barbed wire, the smell of death... The year is 1917 and the TARDIS has materialised on the Western Front during the First World War. Or has it? For very soon the Doctor finds himself pursued by the soldiers of Ancient Rome; and, then he and his companions are reliving the American Civil War of 1863. And is this really Earth, or just a mock-up created by the War Lords? As Doctor Who solves the mystery, he has to admit he is faced with an evil of such magnitude that he cannot combat it on his own - he has to call for the help of his own people, the Time Lords. So, for the first time, it is revealed who is Doctor Who - a maverick Time Lord who 'borrowed' the TARDIS without permission. By appealing to the Time Lords he gives away his position in Time and Space. Thus comes about the Trial of Doctor Who... David Troughton reads Malcolm Hulke's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1979.
