The Christmas Trap

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 07:52 AM PST

For all those of you that have an iPhone, an iPod Touch or an iPad, you can now update the newest Doctor Who game The Mazes of Time to include an additional adventure called The Christmas Trap (you can tell when they intended to release it!)

With three new chapters for you to go through, this brand new adventure features the return of one of the doctor's oldest and deadliest enemies, the Autons. Described as:

"The latest Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time update adds a brands new Christmas adventure for in-app purchase. Featuring the Autons, one of the Doctors most feared enemies; this new level pack will provide the biggest challenge yet for the Doctor and Amy! Download now for a new environment, game-play features, enemy type and much more."

This seems to be the way that Doctor Who games are evolving at the moment, with downloadable games at the heart of keeping people entertained and it's still early days from the makers as well, it's not a bold statement to make to say that the downloadable Doctor Who games you can get from the BBC website could one day make an appearance on Apples famous gadgets.

For all those of you that are lucky enough to able to play this add on, we want your opinions on what the game is like!

You can download The Christmas Trap for 59p via the Apple app store.

Russell T. Davies reflects on New Who

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 04:48 AM PST

Assignment X have added an interview with previous Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T. Davies:

Russell T. Davies, the man most directly responsible for the resurrection of the Doctor Who franchise in 2005, was on hand at the Television Critic’s Association to promote his upcoming fourth season of Torchwood, also a Who connected show. And, of course, Assignment X couldn’t resist asking his thoughts on the new Doctor Who series post his exit.

“Of course I love it! Stephen Moffat’s most important role is to get me a DVD before that Saturday of transmission,” says Davies. “This new season it’s going to go out on BBC America on the same day, but I still want the DVD because it won’t have adverts!”

Davies, who was a fan of the show from childhood, has re-discovered his passion for the series and can’t get enough of it.

“I’m loving it, I am absolutely loving it,” Davies says. “This morning before I came to Pasadena I was sitting there reading the Doctor Who Series Companion Part 2 and reading about the cut scenes from ‘The Hungry Earth’, and I thought, ‘What a fan am I?”’Can’t wait for the new series, can’t wait!”

The former Who showrunner went on to explain that he does have some creative links to the series, since he is in charge of the Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, but he does like to be left in the dark

“I really don’t want to know what’s happening,” he explains. “I have to know some things, because I am still running The Sarah Jane Adventures, and there’s no specific crossover, but we have to make sure we’re in the same universe. For example I got a call from my agent yesterday about something in Doctor Who, that I’m not going to tell you, but it thrilled me, and I thought God that’s exciting! I have tiny moments of contact, but I don’t want too many of them because I want to sit and watch it like a kid.”

Review: The Ark - DVD

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 04:02 AM PST

Reviewed by: Doctor Who Online

Manufacturer: BBC DVD / 2|Entertain

Written By: Paul Erickson and Lesley Scott

RRP: &ound;19.99

Release Date: 14th February 2011

Right from the off, The Ark is a story that grips the viewer, owing to the magnificent jungle set that gives us a sense of scale - not to mention the striking sight of the eventual villain, all within the first 60 seconds.

But all is not what it seems in this serial, that packs some shocking twists and suspenseful builds, to what turns out to be an incredibly intelligently constructed adventure.

The twist that comes at the end of Episode Two in particular is a direct example of the intelligence in the script. Throughout the first two episodes, the viewer simply accepts the fact that the Monoids are essentially slaves to the humans of the Ark. And only when the situation is flipped in Episode Three, do you suddenly realise the poignancy of this acceptance and how actions have consequences.

There are several morals within the story, but perhaps the most painstakingly obvious one is never time travel if you have a cold!

The DVD is rounded off with some connecting features that compliment the story.

The 'Commentary' is moderated by Toby Hadoke and features Peter Purves (Steven) & Michael Imison (Director). Toby does an excellent job of guiding the guests, of which both contribute evenly with some great stories and memories. One such story tells us how unaccommodating the BBC was to the Elephant (seen in Episode One) at the time, and how the director had to keep it in a van outside of his house, overnight.

'All's Wells That Ends Wells' looks at Doctor Who's connection to H.G. Wells, and the inspiration taken from his work. In particular looking at the similarities between The Ark, and H.G. Wells' The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The Sleeper Awakes and The War of the Worlds. It includes interviews with Matthew Sweet (Historian & Writer), Kim Newman (Novelist & Critic), Dominic Sandbrook (Historian & Writer), Tony Keen (Research Associate, Open University) & Graham Sleight (Editor, "Foundation").

Even fans of Wells' work will be surprised at just how much influence he appears to have given to this story.

'One Hit Wonder' casts a light on why some Doctor Who monsters only appeared once, with a spotlight on The Monoids, in particular. The feature includes interviews with Jacqueline Rayner (Author), Dominic Sandbrook (Historian & Writer), Kim Newman (Novelist & Critic) & Matthew Sweet (Writer & Historian).

This feature could have been a little longer, perhaps focusing on some of the other 'one hit wonders' such as The Zygons, The Sensorites or The Axons.

'Riverside Story' is a 20-minute feature that looks at London's Riverside Studios; Doctor Who's temporary home from 1964-1968.

Presented by Matthew Sweet as he brings Peter Purves back to the location, we learn about some of the challenges that The Ark faced, not to mention, how to build a Jungle within a spaceship!

The documentary also features sit-down interviews with Peter Purves and Michael Imison (Director).

Apart from the main story itself, this documentary is the set piece in The Ark DVD, adding newfound respect for a building that was instrumental in one of Doctor Who's most important periods.

The 'Coming Soon Trailer' is for the Mara Tales box-set. It's a terrific trailer, cut perfectly together with a slick soundtrack and CGI titles that will have you counting down the days until its release. The final spoken line in the trailer sums up the imminent release perfectly... "The Mara's waited a long time for this return, I think it plans to be spectacular".

As with previous releases, there are the usual 'Radio Times Billings', 'Photo Gallery' and 'Production Information Subtitles'.

Overall another solid release from 2|Entertain, with some excellent value added material. If the DVD could benefit from one thing, it would be a feature on the costume and make-up behind the visually stunning Monoids.

A more than worthwhile purchase for any fan of Doctor Who, H.G Wells or big wigs and one-eyed monsters!

The Gemini Contagion - CD Cover and Details

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:21 AM PST

AudioGO have sent DWO the cover and details for the forthcoming CD release of The Gemini Contagion.

The ice-planet Vinsk, in the year 2112. The all-new anti-viral handwash, Gemini, has been laced with Meme-Spawn: a sentient micro-organism which makes the user fluent in every language in the universe. However, manufacturer Zalnex made one crucial mistake. They didn’t test Gemini on humans, who are seized by the violent urge to communicate but speak every language all at once – with a manic, garbled shriek – and pass on the virus by touch.

The Doctor and Amy arrive on an Earth-bound cargo-ship loaded with Gemini, where a human crew are succumbing to the virus which has nasty second and third phases in store. When the Doctor and Amy are separated, they both know that it’s only a matter of time before Amy is infected.

With the ship locked on course, and no way of curing the sufferers, the Doctor is faced with a terrible decision: does he save Amy, or Earth?

Meera Syal reads this exclusive audio story featuring the Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond.

Written specially for audio by Jason Arnopp, ‘The Gemini Contagion’ is read by Meera Syal, who played Nasreen Chaudhry in the BBC TV episodes ‘The Hungry Earth’ and ‘Cold Blood’.

The Gemini Contagion is released on 3rd March 2011, priced &ound;9.25.

Audio Go: Target Update

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 12:14 AM PST

The range of Target Novelisation adaptations from Audio Go is about to enter new territory with the first original novelisation of a televised story.

Previously penned by Terrance Dicks, this year sees Doctor Who and The Stones of Blood being released as a brand new version written by its original television script writer, David Fisher. Talking to Doctor Who Magazine, commissioning editor Michael Stevens says:
Back last year I asked David Fisher whether he would be interested in penning his own novelisation of the story in which he would be able to expand upon the characters and backgrounds of the adventure. David took on the challenge and has delivered a superb new telling of the story.

This is a one-off for the time being, because there are still dozens and dozens of original Target novelisation queuing up to be released as Audiobooks. I'm hoping it will prove to be a popular diversion from the norm, and one which will perhaps pique the curiousity of many Doctor Who fans.
The novelisation is read by Susan Engel, who played Vivien Fay in the story, and also features John Leeson who provides the voice of K9.

The adaptation is due for release on the 5th May, following on from the scheduled releases below:

The Edge of Destruction, out now

William Russell reads this exciting novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure.

In a final bid to regain control of the TARDIS' faulty control system the Doctor is driven to experiment with a dangerous untried combination. With a violent explosion the TARDIS blacks out and the crew find themselves trapped inside. A simple technical fault? Sabotage? Or something even more sinister? Tension mounts as the Doctor and his companions begin to suspect one another. What has happened to the TARDIS? Slowly a terrifying suspicion dawns. Has the TARDIS become the prisoner of some powerful fifth intelligence which is even now haunting the time-machine's dark and gloomy corridors?

William Russell, who played the Doctor's companion Ian in the original TV serial, reads Nigel Robinson's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1988.
The War Games, due 3rd February 2011

David Troughton reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure.

Mud, barbed wire, the smell of death...The year is 1917 and the TARDIS has materialised on the Western Front during the First World War. Or has it? For very soon the Doctor finds himself pursued by the soldiers of Ancient Rome; and, then he and his companions are reliving the American Civil War of 1863. And is this really Earth, or just a mock-up created by the War Lords? As Doctor Who solves the mystery, he has to admit he is faced with an evil of such magnitude that he cannot combat it on his own - he has to call for the help of his own people, the Time Lords. So, for the first time, it is revealed who is Doctor Who - a maverick Time Lord who 'borrowed' the TARDIS without permission. By appealing to the Time Lords he gives away his position in Time and Space. Thus comes about the Trial of Doctor Who...

David Troughton reads Malcolm Hulke's complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1979.
The Ribos Operation, due 3rd March 2011

John Leeson reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure.

Reluctantly cancelling his well-earned holiday, the Doctor sets off in the Tardis to trace and re-assemble the six segments of the Key to Time on which the stability of the entire Universe depends. Assisted by the argumentative Romanadvoratrelundar and K9, he lands on the planet Ribos in search of the first segment and finds himself entangled in the machinations of two sinister strangers, Garron and the Graff Vynda Ka. Who are they? Is Garron simply a shady confidence-trickster dealing in interplanetary real estate? Is the Graff Vynda Ka just a power-crazed exile bent on revenge? Or are they both really agents of the Black Guardian, intent upon seizing the precious Key in order to throw the Universe into eternal chaos? Risking his life within the monster-infested catacombs of Ribos, the Doctor has to use all his wit and ingenuity to find out...

This is an exciting unabridged reading, with music and sound effects, and this novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure, first published by Target Books in 1979.
Inferno, due 7th April 2011

Caroline John reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure.

In this exciting reading, first published by Target Books in 1984, the Doctor is trapped in a parallel world, unable to act as the Earth is threatened by a poisonous liquid leaking from top-secret drilling project Inferno.

See the Audio Go Doctor Who Universe section for details on the full range of CDs available; you can also purchase them via our shop on Amazon.

Return of the Mac!

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 10:42 PM PST

The Rumours are true – Fleetwood Mac track Oh Well Part One has been restored and can now be heard in the Third Doctor serial Spearhead from Space.

Steve Roberts of the Doctor Who Restoration Team (who have their own van and, yes, its bigger on the inside) posted the Second Hand News on the Gallifrey Base's Forum that the track will be restored for the DVD  release later this year.

The song could originally be heard serenading the plastic dolls being manufactured in the shady Auto Plastics factory scenes during the original transmission but it was removed  from the 1988 video and 2001 DVD releases due to rights issues.

Now said issues have Gone their Own Way and been resolved by the PPL agreement (the licence agreement that licences performers music to TV programmes, radio shows, online streaming sites and general shops and pubs) the very same agreement that allowed The Beatles' Ticket to Ride to be heard during the First Doctor adventure The Chase.

Click Play below to see a clip of this classic track by one of Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley's favourite bands.

Yet More New Series Casting

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 08:36 PM PST

News is starting to seep through of acting talent that is to be involved on the newest series of Doctor Who for this year but so far it seems to be a few more minor roles that are being announced as opposed to the major ones!

First up is stand up comedian Charlie Baker who's appeared on the BBC pop quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks and also in an episode of Channel 4's The IT Crowd. He has been cast in the part of rather vaguely titled "fat man". Appearing alongside him (one presumes) is Dan Johnston as "thin man".  Johnston's TV credits include Sold, The Bill and sitcom After You've Gone.

Two child actors have also apparently made contributions to the new series but only by lending their vocal talents to some voice work (surely not the Toclafane again?!).Fern Duncan has recently appeared in Poirot and the new Jack Black film Gulliver's Travels whilst Frances Encell has had parts in ITV soap Emmerdale and The Royal.

Finally, another new director has been announced for the 2011 series in the form of Peter Hoar who has directed episodes of Mistresses and Spooks, so he should hopefully bring an exciting and well paced episode into the 2011 run!

So there you have it, we're nothing if not meticulous here at Kasterborous when it comes to the details of the newest series of our favourite show!

The new series of Doctor Who is due to air sometime in spring 2011.
