The Children of Seth

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 06:03 AM PST

Another series of the fantastic Lost Stories are coming out this year from Big Finish and the latest news is that we're being treated to not one, not two but three Fifth Doctor tales!

As well as the Seventh Doctor stories that are due out, theses releases will see the Fifth Doctor battling enemies in stories that never made it to the small screen for various reasons. One such story that is bound to get fans excited is The Children of Seth, which is written by Christopher Bailey who was responsible for the 1980 stories Kinda and Snakedance. David Richardson, the Producer of the range explained:

"I contacted Christopher, and he was delighted to hand over the existing script material and storyline. So one day last summer adapter Marc Platt, script editor John Dorney and me piled into a car and met with Christopher in Brighton, working through the story over a long lunch."

The story involves the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan arriving on a planet that is at war with the mysterious Seth and anyone who asks questions is quickly sent to "hell"… (although we've used an image including Mark Strickson, Turlough does not appear in this adventure.)

Recorded in January, the guest cast is also very impressive, including Honor Blackman (who previously appeared in the Sixth Doctor story Terror of the Vervoids), David Warner (who appeared in the Doctor Who animated adventure Dreamland) and Vernon Dobtcheff (who was in the Second Doctor adventure The War Games).

This is going to be a very special release as Kinda and Snakedance are two of the finest Doctor Who stories ever written and with such an amazing cast as well, this is going to be quite a ride…

The Children of Seth will be released in December 2011 and more Lost Stories titles will announced very soon. You can find out more by visiting www.bigfinish.com, and by checking the latest Doctor Who Magazine, which features a fascinating new interview with Janet Fielding.

French viewing for the rest of the month consists of Le labyrinthe des Anges (pts 1+2) and Les Vampires de Venise next weekend, and Le Seigneur des Rêves and La révolte des intra-terrestres (pts 1+2) on the 26th.

The Way Through the Woods

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 10:10 PM PST

Doctor Who: The Way Through the Woods by Una McCormackThird in the list of original Doctor Who novels set for release in April is The Way Through the Woods by Una McCormack.

A time-hopping adventure featuring the Doctor, Amy and Rory, The Way Through the Woods joins Hunter's Moon and The Dead of Winter as BBC Books' first set of releases for 2011.

'The motorway bends around the woods. So did the old road. So did the Roman road. As long as people have lived here, they've gone out of their way to avoid the woods…'

England, today. Between the housing estate and the motorway lies an ancient wood. The motorway bends to avoid it. Last week, teenager Laura Brown went missing. Tonight, Vicky Caine will miss her bus and take a shortcut through the wood. And she will disappear too. England, 1917. Between the village and the main road lies an ancient wood. The old Roman road bends to avoid it. Tonight Emily Bostock and a man called Rory Williams will go to the woods.

Investigating events in the present day and back in 1917, the Doctor and Amy are desperate to find out what's happened to Rory. He was supposed to look after Emily – and now they've both vanished. Something is waiting in the woods. Something that's been there for thousands of years. Something that is now waking up…

Una McCormack's previous credits include last year's Doctor Who novel The King's Dragon as well as titles in the Star Trek franchise.

Released on April 28th, 2011 and with an RRP of £6.99, The Way Through the Woods is available to order now for just £5.24 from Amazon!

Troughton Bio in Autumn

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 08:00 PM PST

2011 seems to be the year in which we learn the life stories of quite a variety of Doctor Who names.  Already slated for release in the coming months are Elisabeth Sladen's autobiography and a not-so-auto-biography of credited Dalek designer Terry Nation. We can now inform you of plans for a new bio of the Second Doctor himself, Patrick Troughton!

Written by his son Michael, the book should cover Troughton's days spent serving as a Royal Navy Commander during World War Two and his impressive acting career with numerous roles in film and TV, which of course includes three years on Who.

Publisher Tim Hirst indicated his and Michael Troughton's excitement for the biography, suggesting that we Whovians are in for something wonderful:

"Michael's research is comprehensive and meticulous and his enthusiasm for the project is contagious!  This book will be a real treat for Doctor Who fans."

Patrick Troughton: The Biography of the Second Doctor Who will be a hardback book from Hirst Publishing, and is scheduled to come out in November.  Pre-order at the Hirst website for £19.99.

So who are you most anxious to read about?  Sarah Jane Smith actress Elisabeth Sladen, Dalek dude Terry Nation, or the Doctor who really defined the bow tie, Patrick Troughton?  Comment now or be dumped into a trash compactor full of Macra!

Big Finish's Grand Finale

Posted: 12 Feb 2011 06:08 PM PST

The end is near for the audio adventures of the Eighth Doctor and Lucie, and the story-creators at Big Finish are taking this opportunity to look back on what they've achieved.

Head over to the Big Finish website and you'll find an exclusive, free-to-listen-to podcumentary about the making of the series.  Writer/director Barnaby Edwards (or as TV-Who-savvy people may know him, Dalek) and executive producer Nicholas Briggs (who has also been referred to as a Dalek from time to time) join Lucie Miller actress Sheridan Smith (not presently regarded as a Dalek) to discuss the series' conception, writing, casting of Smith, and more.  As Big Finish suggests, the podcast aims to serve as both a nostalgic look back for faithful listeners and a worm on a fishing line to reel in new ones so they have a chance to listen to all the previous episodes right before the finale.

Speaking of the finale, it'll be released in two parts, and there will be Daleks.  Lucie Miller is scheduled to come out later this month with To The Death following in March.  You can pre-order the CD versions of Parts One and Two for £11 each.
