Fans pay tribute to Elisabeth Sladen

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 02:55 PM PDT

With the sad news of the death of Elisabeth Sladen still raw in many peoples minds and so difficult to comprehend, many fans around the world have been making their own tributes to a woman who was such a central part of so many childhoods.

British folk singer Talis Kimberley has recorded her own tribute, Goodnight Sarah Jane, available as a free download from her website. Kimberley says "this is my tribute to the actor Lis Sladen. Along with many other people I was desparately saddened to hear of her death; her portrayal of Sarah-Jane Smith was an inspiration during two periods of my life."

The tribute page in Gallifrey Base now stands at over 2000 posts and a special thread has been setup where fans can post their own artwork. Meanwhile a whole new generation of fans have been expressing their sense of loss on the BBC's Newsround page, which has had its biggest response ever to a story covered on the site. Some of the messages from children are read out by the co-stars of The Sarah Jane Adventures, Tommy Knight and Daniel Anthony, who are morning the loss of the woman they called their "Mother Hen, ...always smiling, always laughing".

Many fans have made their own tribute videos which can be found on YouTube and Dork Tower, the online comic, has produced its own cartoon in tribute.

A group of fans have launched a JustGiving site raising money for the charity Cancer Research UK, in memory of the actress. To date over £3000 has been raised. Other fans have been donating to the Lymphoedema Support Network, which was understood to be a charity the actress supported. A JustGiving site has been set up to buy an imaginary pint to toast Sarah Jane.

The BBC's programme in memory of Elisabeth Sladen, My Sarah Jane, which contains contributions from many of those who worked with her, can be seen in the UK on CBBC at 6.45pm Saturday, directly after Doctor Who finishes on BBC One.

6.1: The Impossible Astronaut - DWO Spoiler Free Preview

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 07:14 AM PDT

DWO have seen 6.1: The Impossible Astronaut and have put our spoiler-free preview together:

The wait is over! Series 6 gets off to a flying start with the curiously titled, 'The Impossible Astronaut' - a story that is unlike anything we have seen, or even imagined, before.

It's a real knotty one to describe as so much of the plot is spoileriffic, not to mention complex. Complex is good though! It's so easy as a viewer to simply vegetate and accept everything you see on screen without challenging you or making you think.

Steven Moffat really makes you work as the many strands that bind The Impossible Astronaut, and no doubt the rest of Series Six, weave their way through a thoroughly entertaining 45 minutes.

Doctor Who feels a little more grown up now, but at the same time, a little more childish in places. The beautiful locations, the grim locations, some of the subject matter and plots just make you feel that the stakes have risen higher than ever before.

We start off the episode with five minutes of fun, taking us from a royal court (where The Doctor is getting up to mischief again) right through to a Laurel and Hardy movie (more Doctor-y mischief). Three TARDIS blue envelopes are delivered to their recipients and a fourth to a mystery man. All of the recipients are summoned to an exact location at an exact moment in time, but why, and by whom?

Then, get ready to have the rug pulled from the very fabric of your being as Steven Moffat delivers the first course of what will play out to be one of the greatest story arcs to date.

Throw in a big dollop of President Nixon, the FBI, the scariest monsters ever to have appeared in Doctor Who (hands down), and a cracking cliffhanger to boot, and you have yourself a truly unmissable televisual masterpiece.

The only problem is we have a whole 7 days until we find out what happens next...

Five things to look out for...

1) "I won't be ______ ___ again, but you'll be ______ me"

2) The Doctor's special fizzy straw.

3) Joy in the bathroom.

4) "River, make her blue again!"

5) Amy has two secrets The Doctor doesn't know about!

Elisabeth Sladen Tribute Announced

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 04:57 AM PDT

As soon as the thrills of The Impossible Astronaut have faded from our television sets the BBC will reflect on the recent sad passing of Elisabeth Sladen – the actress who played perhaps the greatest and most worthy of the Doctors companions, journalist Sarah Jane Smith – with a 15 minute tribute entitled My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen.

Announced by the Doctor Who website and via DWM Tweets the programme will be both a tribute and a celebration of both the warmth, compassion and integrity that Elisabeth and her onscreen alter ego engendered in both family, friends and audiences alike.

It will also serve as a compendium of Sarah Jane's life and times with the Doctor, from her first appearance opposite the Third Doctor in The Time Warrior, to her time fronting her own spin-off from the Doctor Who universe the award winning The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Produced by Gillane Seaborne (Doctor Who: Confidential) and Brian Minchin (Torchwood: Miracle Day) My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen will air on CBBC at 18:45 straight after The Impossible Astronaut has finished over on BBC one.

Eating the Great One

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 03:57 AM PDT

What are you frightened of? It seems a fair question, but one in which Matt Smith seems to be able to answer i many varied ways.

When he's not defending Doctor Who from the nonsensical, headline-grabbing bashings of Trevor "he should know better" Eve, Matt Smith is happy to admit that he's scared of spiders.

Although not too scared that he wouldn't eat one…

"The way they move freaks me out… it's so malevolent. They fascinate me as well. If I see a spider in the flat, I try to get a cup and a piece of paper and throw it out of the window. I can't kill them because they're good for catching flies. Apparently, as a kid I used to eat spiders. Maybe there's some Freudian significance behind that."

Perhaps he's right. Or perhaps it proved an early prediliction for taking on the very creatures that caused the Third Doctor to regenerate in Planet of the Spiders? Perhaps we'll never know; we can die ignorant, unlike Trevor Eve, whose attacks on Doctor Who were brought up in an interview with Matt Smith by The Telegraph.

Matt, like The Grand Moff before him, gave Eve such short shrift that the 1970s heartthrob actor can be under no mistake that he has been rumbled.

"Show me any other series that can tackle this many big issues, appeal to this broad a range of people, and still have a laugh along the way," Smith continues, "and I will say, 'You can't.' That's what I'd say to Trevor Eve. At least we're never predictable. At least we're inventive. This whole show is testament to Steven Moffat, and his ambition and his scope, and that's a privilege to be part of. It's as simple as that."

Trevor Eve and the spiders of Metebilis III can tune in to BBC One on Saturday at 6pm to catch their mortal enemy in action in The Impossible Astronaut.

Second Series Highs and Lows

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 02:09 AM PDT

It's podKast (with a K) time again here at Kasterborous Towers, so before we proceed, a warning.

We recorded the podKast below (also available via direct download, from iTunes or by subscribing to the RSS feed) on Monday of this week, which is why there is no mention of the sad passing of Elisabeth Sladen the following day. For out thoughts on this matter, a short podKast was recorded on Tuesday evening which you can listen to.

As we approach the second run of episodes for Matt Smith's Doctor under Steven Moffat's second season of stewardship of the show, James McLean and Christian Cawley discuss the various second series of every Doctor Who (save the two who didn't enjoy a second run of episodes) from William Hartnell through to David Tennant.

What did we find? Well there's a large improvement in the second runs, it is fair to say, and a lot of strong episosdes. But as to whether or not it stands up as a rule in Doctor Who that the star's second year in the show is better than the first, you'll have to listen to find out…

Incidentally, a big thank you to everyone who has tuned into our new regular podKasts so far. If there is anything we can give a mention to, anyone you want us to say hello to or even if you just want to get in touch please leave a message below, and please share this with as many people as you think would be interested in having a listen!
