One of the strengths of Matt Smith's performance—here, and in general—is the way he can switch from one gear to the next in a snap. But let's get back to the Doctor and his TARDIS wife. Gaiman's script cleverly raises that may or may not have long-term ...

Hygiene and Heartbreaks

Posted: 14 May 2011 03:28 AM PDT

As part of their build up to The Doctor's Wife, SFX have featured a double-hander of interviews with guest star Suranne Jones and writer Neil Gaiman.

There is such a lot to read in the interviews so you should probably follow the link above; meanwhile we've picked a couple of gems for your entertainment.

For instance, Matt Smith was concerned by Suranne Jones' personal hygiene…

"They do dirty my fingers up a lot. I did a scene with Matt where he happened to be looking at my hand. And he kept looking at me and looking at my hand. And then he said 'Do the make-up people dirty your hands?' There was dirt around the fingernails, dirt inside… I said, 'Matt, yes, of course they do!' And he said, 'Thank god for that. I kept thinking 'Why has no one told her…?' She's dirty!"

Meanwhile, you should be concerned about the amount of spare handkerchiefs you have by your side before tuning into The Doctor's Wife tonight, according to writer Neil Gaiman (well, his friends at least…):

"I showed my episode to some friends, very, very nervously, having sworn them all to secrecy and having explained to them that if anybody found out I'd shown them it then the BBC would creep out in the night and cut off my testicles. And there's a bit where Suranne [Jones] is talking, and I looked around at the room, and everybody's looking at the TV screen, and on half the faces the cheeks were wet, the eyes were big – nobody's looking away, nobody's stopping and looking for a tissue or anything.
"I'm not even sure that they were aware that they were crying, except that they've got glistening cheeks… And I'm going 'This is astonishing.' She breaks your heart."

The Doctor's Wife airs this evening with an episode that looks set to change quite a few things…

Tennant Tales

This is a quick round-up of recent news on David Tennant's filming projects.

The Decoy Bride

The Decoy Bride is a romantic comedy set on the fictional Scottish island of Hegg, where writer James Arbor (Tennant) and superstar actress Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) escape to marry out of the public gaze; however, having been tracked down by the paparazzi, a decoy bride Katie (Kelly MacDonald) is hired to stage a fake wedding ...

The film is released from 19th August.
A Miracle

The Doctor Who Game Conundrum

Posted: 14 May 2011 02:01 AM PDT

What is happening with Doctor Who games on the PC and Mac? While the iPhone has been receiving update for the Mazes in Time game, 2010′s Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has been conspicuous by its absence since the release of the last installment at Christmas.

We've already heard that an MMO is in development (details of which will be released at the San Diego Comic Con in July) which at present is understood to be similar to various Facebook games and now there is news from BBC Worldwide's Robert Nashak that "big news" is planned for next year.

"There's big news for 2012 that we can't talk about just yet. Watch this space!"

Okay, so it's pretty vague. But it is an actual announcement, which is more than fans of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games have had so far despite promises of a second series of episodes in 2011…>

The Doctor's Wife Teasers!

Posted: 14 May 2011 12:41 AM PDT

Different websites around the web have been throwing teasers for The Doctor's Wife out left, right and centre over the past few days, ironic, given the perceived sensitivity of the episode and the comments made by Steven Moffat this week on the matter of spoilers…

Via the efforts of SFX and Digital Spy we've picked the best of their teasers – which are different from spoilers as they give nothing away – and listed them for your pleasure…

  • The Doctor doesn't always get where he wants to go, but he always ends up where he needs to be.
  • We possibly hear something first heard in Logopolis.
  • We learn exactly how long the Doctor has been travelling in time and space.
  • The episode has a kind of Utopia vibe.
  • Idris has a very important message for the Doctor.
  • Someone asks a question of the Doctor that's never been asked before.
  • Amy is the "orangey girl" and Rory is the "pretty one".
  • He's done it AGAIN! Sort of.

That's your lot! If you want any real hints, you can wait until this evening and watch the episode; in the meantime, writer Neil Gaiman has a short precis of The Doctor's Wife

The Doctor's Wife airs in the UK on BBC One at 6.30 pm and in the USA at 9/8 c on BBC America tonight!

They Keep Killing Rory

Posted: 13 May 2011 09:48 PM PDT

"Oh my God!  They killed Rory!  You b******!"

My friends, those are the words you would hear if South Park ever made a spoof of the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who.  But some would argue that Doctor Who is beginning to turn into a slight parody of South Park, with the aforementioned Rory Pond née Williams  from the former series now having died enough times to compete with the hood-faced boy known as Kenny from the latter.

When Steven Moffat first made the announcement back in April that one of Doctor Who's four leads – the Doctor, River, Amy, or of course, Rory – was going to be handing his or her badge in to the Grim Reaper, our esteemed Grand Kasterborite Christian Cawley suggested that there might be decent odds that we would lose our favorite husband-of-a-ginger.  This notion was proven incorrect after the broadcast of The Impossible Astronaut, but you can't blame anyone for having believed in the theory.  After all, he had already died and come back more than once before, so who was to say it couldn't happen again?

Which leads us to one of the big debates in the Who fandom these days: how many times can you kill off the same character before his or her death becomes meaningless?  In Series 5 alone we saw the Doctor and Amy both killed and brought back, and since he's been introduced Rory's died at least three dozen times.

Okay, so 36 Rory deaths might be a slight truth-stretch, but just how many times has the man met his fate?  After pondering on that question for a little while, I came up with the following list of all the occasions in which the writers have attempted to lead us to believe that Rory's gone for good.

  • Amy's Choice – The first glimpse we got of Rory's demise was technically in a dream, but we weren't sure of that at the time.  All we knew was that if it wasn't a dream, what an awful way to go – breath from an old person!  This wouldn't have been the first instance in Doctor Who of a second companion brought on board one episode only to be written out in the next – remember Adam from the Eccleseries?  He never died, but his very removal from the show justified the argument that could have been made immediately after Rory was vaporized – that this was the last we would ever see of this nervous boyfriend sidekick.
  • Cold Blood – So here we were, happy to see Rory back after we thought he might be dead in the previous story, only to see him killed off for real at the climax of the Doctor and company's journey to the center of the Earth.  Darn you Doctor; you just had to pull that shrapnel from the crack and give Restac time to shoot at you and hit Rory, didn't you?
  • Cold Blood – Hold on, didn't we just mention that episode?  Shortly after being shot down by a lizard and removed from life, Rory was swallowed up by a crack in time and removed from existence completely, and Amy's memories specifically, which arguably counts as a second death within minutes of his first.
  • The Big Bang – Like the rest of the story, this one's a bit tough to get your head around.  As I interpreted the story, the Doctor flew the Pandorica into the sun-like TARDIS and brought about Big Bang Two, which destroyed everything throughout all of time in the universe as we knew it, which included Auton Rory.  It all happened fairly quickly in the actual episode, but a new universe brought on by a new Big Bang would take billions of years to form a new Earth, and another 4.6 billion years to spawn a new Rory, whose memories of his 2,000 years of life prior to Big Bang Two all came back after Amy remembered the Doctor.  Perhaps I'm looking at it the wrong way round, but again, as we all know, it's an extremely confusing story!
  • Day of the Moon – We were given a bit of a break from Rory deaths for a little while after the Series 5 finale, but come episode two of the current run, we were treated to a rather amazing sequence at the beginning that included Rory being shot down on top of the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona by Canton and his crew… or so we thought.
  • The Curse of the Black Spot – Captain Avery's son was dematerialized – "Just how much is that treasure worth to you man?!" – and suddenly, to everyone's surprise, Rory gets knocked off the ship and into the sea.  And then, just to top it off, the Doctor, rather than diving in after him, sends the Siren to go and fetch him instead.  So if he hadn't drowned before, he was certainly a goner now, right?
  • The Curse of the Black Spot – Okay, so it turns out the Siren's a medical practitioner, not a deadly ocean-beast feeding on pirates.  All Amy has to do is stick her hand in the consent form and voila!  A Rory she has no idea how to save!  As he lies on the TARDIS floor, we're led to believe for a moment that Rory is finally, once and for all, dead.  For all we know, even looking back on it, he could have been.  It certainly doesn't appear to have been any of Amy's efforts that got him breathing again.  Could there be have been intervention from an unknown third party?

Doctor Who: The Doctor's WifeIn my book that's seven – count 'em seven – times Rory's seemed to be dead now.  That debate I mentioned before is really making sense now; is the concept of death in Doctor Who becoming watered down and meaningless?  Perhaps, but I have another question in mind: did the concept of death in Doctor Who ever have any meaning to begin with?

How many instances have there been where a main character was killed off and then brought back?  This could be a long list.  First of all there's the Master, who has returned from permanent death an almost uncountable number of times in both the classic and modern ages of the show.  Then we have Jack Harkness, who's died so many times they had to make a spinoff series just to fit them all in!  Peri Brown's another example; it was hard not to feel shocked at her gruesome fate in the middle of The Trial of a Time Lord, and yet it was somewhat disappointing to learn at the end of the season that her body hadn't been possessed by a Mentor after all.  And must we even mention the Doctor, whose constant dying-and-undying have kept the whole show going since 1963?

Now, how many instances have there been where a main character was killed off and stayed dead?  Hmm… Adric.  Anyone else?  Oh!  Kamelion.  But he doesn't count, he's a robot.  There may be more lead persona bucket-kickings than those that I'm not aware of; I won't even begin to suggest that I've seen all there is to see of the classic series.  And of course, in almost every episode, there's the random extra in the background who gets devoured by a giant bat or something similar, but I think it's fairly safe to say that more often than not, we've only encountered pretend deaths of the TARDIS crew and others we've seen a lot of.

Has death in Doctor Who ever had any real meaning long-term?  Not really.  If the production crew murdered a companion every season in a family program, it would be too depressing!  We wouldn't want to scare off the children, would we?

The Fifth Doctor lands in the Seventh Dimension

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:11 PM PDT

BBC Radio 4 Extra - recently rebranded from BBC7 - will be bringing new adventures of the Fifth Doctor to radio next week. The series, created by Big Finish, stars Peter Davison as the Doctor, alongside his Season 20 co-stars Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Janet Fielding (Tegan) and Mark Strickson (Turlough).

The series kicks off on Monday 16th May with Cobwebs broadcast in four parts in the radio station's Seventh Dimension slot (6:00pm and midnight); the week is finished off on Friday with part one of the second adventure, The Whispering Forest. The full, continuous schedule can be found on the Radio 4 Extra website.

Cobwebs
by Jonathan Morris

You know what cobwebs mean. Spiders…"

In search of a cure for a sickness that's so far claimed six billion lives, scientist Nyssa arrives at an abandoned gene-tech facility on the toxic planet Helheim. 'Hellhole', more like.

Nyssa's not alone. The TARDIS has also been drawn to the Helheim base – and in its cobweb-coated corridors, she soon runs into the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough, her travelling companions of half a century past. But who, or what, has engineered this strange reunion? The Black Guardian, perhaps?

The answer's here, in the dark. With the Cractids. In the cobwebs.
The Whispering Forest
by Stephen Cole

The TARDIS arrives in alien woodlands, where a small group of humans hold tight against the the menace of the Takers – strange creatures who come by night to spirit away members of their settlement.

But if there's one thing that the inhabitants of Purity Bay fear more than the Takers, it's the dirt and disease spread by strangers. Strangers like the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa…

The fanatical Sister Mertil and her hygiene-obsessed acolytes are victims of a terrible corruption – but not in the way they think. Only the whispering forest knows the truth…
Full details on Cobwebs at Big Finish
Full details on The Whispering Forest at Big Finish

The Radio Times's David Brown writes in this week's issue:
A real blast from the past here as Peter Davison steps back into the Tardis to be reunited with assistants Turlough, Tegan and Nyssa. The Fifth Doctor's regeneration aside, it's the first time this quartet has shared a story since 1983's Terminus but the chemistry is quickly re-established. Davison may be more gravelly than during his original tenure but the setting on board an abandoned gene-tech facility readily evokes that era, especially when writer Jonathan Morris falls back on the old standby of characters being chased down deserted corridors by malevolent creatures.

Big Finish: The Five Companions

Posted: 13 May 2011 06:25 PM PDT

Big Finish has announced a special CD bringing a host of former Doctor Who companions together:
The Fifth Doctor meets up with his distant past – the schoolteacher who settled down, the space pilot who became a King, the security agent who died and lived again and the swinging Sixties secretary who has made her own way in the world.
As might be inferred from the description, the story will star Peter Davison as the Doctor, with guest stars William Russell (Ian Chesterton), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Peter Purves (Steven Taylor), Jean Marsh (Sara Kingdom), Anneke Wills (Polly).

The story is written by Eddie Robson, and will also feature the vocal talents of Nick Briggs as the Daleks, and Dan Starkey as the Sontarans.

Recording kicked off on 12th May, with the CD expected to be released in December as a free special exclusively for subscribers to the main Doctor Who range at that time, with the option for future annual subscribers to select it as their free extra.

Full details and subscription options may be found on the Big Finish website; the company have also launched a new fan page on Facebook.

"What's so odd about that?" I hear you ask. Well, it's the picture based on the portrait of the nude Eleventh Doctor (ok, his Pride is covered up by some sort of red silky thing but still) from the opening of The Impossible Astronaut.

Now merchandise is merchandise is merchandise but still, is this something that you would really want to hang on your wall? Proudly framed in your living room as you have guests over ("that's an interesting picture…is it…er, rare?") for a spot of dinner?

Well, they do say that it takes all sorts to make a world and if hanging a semi nude picture of Matt Smith is going to make you happy, then you crack on!

The poster is available to pre order now from the Forbidden Planet website and will start to be shipped out to customers from 28th August 2011. The cost will be £14.99.

For those interested:

"This gorgeous art print is taken directly from the original painting and has been resized to 18″ wide x 24″ tall on 100-pound satin-finish paper."
