SALE PODLET 002 - 07 June 2011

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT

Yes, it's the second day of our Big Finish Daily Sale. And just to prove it, here's a podlet (a teeny-tiny podcast) in which Nick Briggs, David Richardson and Paul Spragg attempt to explain it all for you. In all honesty, they probably don't make anything that clear at all. Or do they? You be the judge... at least Paul Spragg has a list in front of him.

And don't forget, this week culminates in the Big Finish Day Convention on Saturday June 11th. It's in Barking, near London (it's on the District Line, London Underground!) and you can find full details of the event at tenthplanetevents.co.uk. You can book a ticket, or just turn up on the day

Character Building Army Packs

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 06:08 AM PDT

Doctor Who Character Building Army Packs
While there's no new micro-figures or sets to report about, we can tell you about the latest developments from Character Building, the organization behind the hit Doctor Who almost-Legos… and they're called Army Packs!

Are you a youngster (for real or at heart) wishing to expand the number of desperate predicaments your micro-figure Doctor finds himself in even though all you've got to challenge him is one measly Dalek?  Fret no more!  Now you've got a much better shot at exterminating, deleting, or time-displacing our hero with Character Building's bags of five Daleks, Cybermen, or Weeping Angels!

Sorry, is this reading like a TV advert?  Lets be honest here; these Army Packs won't really get you anything new or particularly exciting at all… they're just more of the same product in a slightly different shrinkwrap.  And it's not clear at the moment whether the Army Pack Daleks will be available in a color that isn't red.  But if you and/or your kid feels a need to add to your/his/her collection of miniaturized editions of Doctor Who's deadliest, and you're willing to pay a tenner for five of the same thing, then by all means stop by your neighborhood Forbidden Planet and expand your set!

One catch though – you won't be able to do that until at least July 1st, when the packs arrive in the Forbidden Planet warehouse.  If you're really, really excited about these things, you can always fork over £9.99 for an online pre-order… but quite frankly we don't expect them to sell out on the launch date.

Much Ado About Reviewing

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:09 AM PDT

Careening onto the stage in a Union Jack clad golf buggy is one way to make an entrance. Naturally for a Shakespeare veteran David Tennant received the bulk of praise for Josie Rourke's go-go 80's update of William Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing.

The adaptation, half high art, half sitcom pilot, sees the former TARDIS bound duo of Tennant and Catherine Tate reunited on stage as warring anti-lovers Benedick and Beatrice.

The Daily Express like most reviewers found much to love in Tennant's versatility:

"He is more derisive than some but balances this by playing the clown with manic energy, displaying great comic timing and emphasis, while moving naturally from glib to grave."

The Independent also praised Tennant's caddish portrayal of Benedick but couldn't muster much enthusiasm for the 'over-interpreted and insufficiently thought-through' update nor Tate's 'laddette' taken on his sparing partner Beatrice:

"The update allows her to play Beatrice's spirited, cynical raillery as the shrugging truculence of a rather yobby ladette. This Beatrice, sporting dungarees, puts a distance between herself and her true emotions by adopting "funny" voices and retreats behind a squawking headless chicken routine of excitement when called on to react honestly to a declaration of love."

Its seems a little churlish to have a go at a populist interpretation of the play for using someone with such a large cultural cache of catchphrases and characters for doing exactly what she was cast for. Have they not seen The Catherine Tate Show?

The Daily Telegraph also had reservations about Tate, referencing ever misogynistic Tory's favourite advert:

"She's very funny in her bolshie sarcasm but never quite captures the poignant pain of a woman who hides deep hurt behind her wit. Indeed she often seems downright rude rather than amusing, and hysterical rather than funny. Calm down, dear."

The Guardian tempers its reservations over the one-note adaptation of the play that misses the desperation of the characters, and a convincing union for the two stars with slight praise for the obvious fun reunited couple seem to be having:

"It's the perfect vehicle for two snappy stars. It's evenly balanced, with cutting lines equally distributed between the would-not-be lovers…Tate is sulky in dungarees, clad in her am-I-bovvered face and voice. She is fluent and funny but on one note: grimacing and doing comic turns – Frankie Howerd at one point. Tennant, graceful and sardonic, reveals a talent for slapstick, an elegance of movement, an exceptional ease with everything that slips off his tongue. So far, so fairly good."

The 'but' after that paragraph is again the production whose switch to 1980's Gibraltar was praised for creating a heady atmosphere for the sparing couple but was criticised for adding little to the audiences understanding of the play.

Inquest into Death of Terry Nation's Agent

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:54 AM PDT

Roger Hancock, agent to Dalek creator Terry Nation, who also represented his brother, the legendary comedian Tony Hancock, has died in 'unnatural circumstances' reports the Daily Telegraph.

Both the Hancock brothers played a small but crucial part in Doctor Who's history. Terry Nation had written for the show Hancock until he was fired by Tony- enabling him to join Doctor Who which he had previously refused to do.

While Roger Hancock was instrumental in negotiating with the BBC over the use of the Daleks resulting in the Terry Nation estate retaining the power to choose which Dalek stories can be  transmitted on television.

Hancock's death has become tangled in bureaucracy following changes to protocol following the Harold Shipman murders. Anybody whose death has been ruled 'unnatural' has to have both an autopsy and an inquest leaving  his son, Tim, who has run the agency since Roger unofficially retired in 1996, to find a way through the 'red tape nightmare'.

Rogers death came as a result of a series of falls and occured on the same day one of his clients, the Only Fools and Horses writer John Sullivan, also passed away after a viral infection.

Tim Hancock paid glowing tribute to his father:

"He was the wise old owl whom I would consult. He is a very hard act to follow. He had no greater delight than to embarrass the hell out of his children. He stopped coming into the office in 1996, but he still claimed he was working until four or five years ago.

If I can be half the man he was, I will die a happy man."

You can get an idea of the role Roger Hancock played in Terry Nation's career from the recent book by Alwyn Turner, The Man Who Invented the Daleks – The Strange Worlds of Terry Nation.

The Almost People -Official Ratings

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:15 AM PDT

The Almost People achieved a final official rating of of 6.72 million viewers.

The figure, which includes those who watched the programme within seven days of broadcast, makes Doctor Who the 6th most watched programme on BBC One for the week.

Overall it was either 20th or 21st for the week, depending on the numbers watching Friday's edition of Emmerdale on ITV1 HD. Figures outside the ITV1 HD Top Ten are not yet available. An ITV1 HD audience of over 290,000 would see Fridays Emmerdale push Doctor Who out of the top twenty for the first time since Silence in the Library in 2008.

Full figures, which will reveal the final chart position of the episode, should be available in the next few of days.

A Good Man Goes To War - AI

Posted: 05 Jun 2011 11:46 PM PDT

Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes To WarDoctor Who: A Good Man Goes To War had an Appreciation Index, or AI score of 88, the joint highest of the series so far.

The AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the episode. The score was the highest of the day on the two main channels with only Dad's Army on BBC Two and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King scoring higher, albeit with lower audiences.

The Sunday BBC Three repeat had 0.66 million watching, with an additional 0.05 million watching on BBC HD.

Sunday saw two programmes score higher ratings than Saturday's Doctor Who, pushing the programme into 30th place for the week.

Official ratings should be released next Monday which will include those time-shifting the episode, and should see the programme in a much higher position in the charts.

Saturday's Doctor Who Confidential had an audience of 0.56 million with 0.02 million watching on BBC HD.

2|Entertain have sent DWO the cover and details for the Doctor Who DVD release of Paradise Towers.

Paradise Towers

Featuring: Sylvester McCoy as The 7th Doctor

Mel wants to go swimming and, as the TARDIS pool has been jettisoned due to a leak, Paradise Towers seems to fit the bill. However, when she and the Doctor arrive, instead of the bright squares and charming cloisters the brochure promised, they find dark, rat-infested corridors full of uncontrollable cleaning machines, undisciplined street gangs and over-worked and belligerent caretakers. Some of the residents seem to be disappearing in mysterious circumstances, too.

What has caused such terrible decay? How could such perfect accommodation have become so rundown and dangerous? And why do the street-wise Kangs, apathetic caretakers, sinister Rezzies and Pex – the self-appointed warrior who puts the world of Paradise Towers to rights – all fear whatever terrible force dwells in the basement? Only the unpredictable Chief Caretaker knows what is down there – and the real secret behind the disappearances…

Special Features:

Reign of Terror Animated!

Posted: 05 Jun 2011 10:55 PM PDT

Smashing news for any who mourn the loss of various episodes from the 60s era of Doctor WhoThe Reign of Terror, the final story of Season 1 (and the second story chronologically to have long-gone components after Marco Polo 100% of which is missing in action) is to have its two departed sections animated!

Respectively titled The Tyrant of France and A Bargain of Necessity, Parts 4 and 5 of The Reign of Terror contribute to the story that saw the first use of location shooting in our favorite show and originated the concept of the Doctor in a "cool" hat that puts the fez to shame, and were previously only available in audio form with the option of an accompanying photo reconstruction.

2|Entertain announced the animation would be included in the upcoming DVD release of the story, scheduled for sometime next year, on their Twitter page, while further commenting on who else is involved:

"Animation partners on REIGN OF TERROR are @bigfinish and @Thetamation. Excited to have such a talented bunch on board!"

Big Finish is, of course, the well-known team behind countless Doctor Who audio adventures, while Theta-Sigma, the real name behind the "Thetamation" Twitter account, is run by Austen Atkinson, who seems to have a background with all the major UK TV networks and several US cable ones.

This is a particularly welcome development not only for those members of our forums who were only just recently discussing how wonderful it would be if stories like The Reign of Terror was brought back to life in such a manner, but for anyone in favor of a complete visual experience of Doctor Who.  Do join us now in the act of shouting, "We can't wait for 2012!"

Big Finish Week

Posted: 05 Jun 2011 10:42 PM PDT

As previously reported, this week sees a special offer running from Big Finish in which the first 50 classic Doctor Who adventures are on sale during the week, leading up to their convention in Barking at the weekend.

The sale runs each day from midnight to midnight (UK time), with today seeing the first ten available as both CD or download at the reduced price of £5.00; tomorrow sees the next ten adventures in the promotion, and so on throughout the week.
