Exclusive Night Terrors Preview Posted: 30 Aug 2011 07:09 AM PDT If there is a single Doctor Who writer of the modern series whose work is likely to split fans down the middle it is Mark Gatiss. From the Victoriana of the wonder The Unquiet Dead in 2005 to the slightly disjointed Victory of the Daleks in 2010 by way of The Idiot's Lantern in 2006, Gatiss' Doctor Who stories for TV have drawn praise, criticism and groans of indifference. In fact, it has been a bit of a mixed bag from the man that this very website declared as a possible replacement for Russell T Davies back in April 2005, but whose 2006 adventure that saw the Doctor fighting Maureen Lipman atop Ally Pally in 1953 left us wondering if we had been a bit premature (and let's face it, we had; the great RTD was barely into his stride!). However, we're once again ready to revise our summary of Gatiss' suitability to be Head Who Honcho following Night Terrors, and you might too… The BBC's summary of the episode is as follows:
Now you know the score with these previews – they're spoiler free, of course, with the aim of giving you an idea of what to expect from the next episode of Doctor Who. I don't think it will be much of a spoiler to tell you that this is one smashing episode, a clever adventure that sees the Doctor, Amy and Rory encountering the world of a scared little boy centered around a housing estate. There are echoes of the RTD era (or even Survival) about the setting, and the story isn't too dissimilar to Fear Her. Where Night Terrors succeeds is in the execution. Some might say that The Idiot's Lantern and Victory of the Daleks suffered from a lack of polish and consistency throughout the episodes, but Gatiss' latest episode is as polished as The Unquiet Dead or perhaps one of his Sherlock episodes. Featuring top performances from Daniel Mays (Ashes to Ashes' Jim Keats) and of course Matt Smith, the real star of Night Terrors is little Jamie Oram, who plays George. This little boy is completely adorable and naturally is the key to everything that is going on in his wardrobe. There are laughs, madcap moments and some quick changes of direction in Night Terrors; most of all, however, it is a story of a dad and his little boy, and if the dénouement doesn't bring a tear to your eye this Saturday night then you surely have a heart of stone. Time for a sneak peak now – first up, here's the trailer: And what would a Doctor Who Series 6 preview be without some BBC-supplied promotional images from this excellent episode? You can catch Night Terrors this Saturday night on BBC One and BBC HD at 7.00 pm, and on BBC America at p/8c.

Day of the Daleks preview: Alister Pearson print Posted: 30 Aug 2011 02:31 AM PDT This Sunday (4th) sees a special preview taking place to celebrate the release of Day of the Daleks on DVD, presented by the Doctor Who Appreciation Society with permission from 2|Entertain. Artist Alister Pearson has produced a new A4 print for the event based on the original artwork designs for the Target novelisation's three covers, by Chris Achilleos, Andrew Skilleter and himself. He'll be at the event to sign prints, proceeds of which are in aid of Help for Heroes; it can also be pre-ordered directly from the DWAS website via their Day of the Daleks event section, and these too will be signed by the artist. Though the event itself is fully booked, there is an open autograph session at the end of the event at 5:00pm for those who wish to come along to pre-order the DVD on the day and have the cover signed by the guests, Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and Richard Franklin (Mike Yates) - it is also hoped that Scott Fredericks (Boaz) will be able to attend on the day as well. As with the print, a signed DVD can also be pre-ordered from DWAS online before the event takes place. Full details on the event and associated merchandise/activities can be found via the DWAS website. BBC ClassicDW have also released a clip from one of the special features on the discs.
Matt Smith Dreams of the Third Dimension Posted: 30 Aug 2011 02:30 AM PDT The relationship between Doctor Who and 3-D has been a bit chequered (Dimensions in Time BOO! Doctor Who Experience YAY!) so we'll hold our enthusiasm at: 'Oh, its stopped raining' levels for now rather than: 'This is the greatest thing since Jesus' hovercraft' levels that Matt Smith has for the mere suggestion that the Fiftieth Anniversary should include a part where things fly towards your face. Smith told Bang! Showbiz that he was interested in seeing the what the Doctor Who boffins could do with the technology:
The short answer would probably be: 'they wouldn't' quickly followed by an argument about justifying spending so much money on 3-D when only a tiny percentage (admittedly a growing percentage) of people own a 3-D TV. The alternative (apart from the cast going into every Doctor Who-loving home across the world and acting out a small scene live in '3-D') would be the a similar model to that of Dimensions in Time (a free giveaway of ineffectual 3-D glasses resulting in eye strain across the world) And nothing says 'Party!' like eyestrain. Looking towards the immediate 2-D future Matt refused to be drawn any further on the scheduling confusion surrounding Doctor Who in 2012:

Posted: 30 Aug 2011 12:59 AM PDT If there's one piece of clothing that both fans and non-fans recognise as being typically Doctor Who then it's Tom Baker's scarf. Born from a miscommunication between costume designer James Acheson and his chosen knitter Begonia Pope (if that's not a companion name in waiting then I don't know what is) about just how much wool she was supposed to use (resulting in a massive 20ft long scarf before common sense prevailed and some alterations were made) the scarf was embraced by cast and crew before making its debut in Robot. While it may have gone on to be altered, damaged and replaced several times over Tom's long stay as the Doctor- the Fourth Doctor and his long, long scarf are inseparably wrapped around pop culture. Updating that iconic look designer España Sheriff has crafted a very geek chic beaded necklace version of Tom's old Moth feeder. According to The Daily What the necklace was a gift for a friend who planned to cosplay as the Fourth Doctor. Should more of the Doctor's looks become hip accessories? Perhaps a Third Doctor style velvet wallet or a Sixth Doctor bag modelled on his colour blind jacket? What do we think?

Elisabeth Sladen's Autobiography Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:58 PM PDT Elisabeth Sladen: The Autobiography will be published on Monday 7th November 2011 at £20 from Aurum Press. Prior to her death in April this year, Elisabeth Sladen, the actress who entertained millions of children and their parents as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures, had been working on a memoir. An account of her career on stage and screen and an insider's view of the world's longest-running science fiction series, the book had been completed in draft form but illness prevented Elisabeth from finishing it. With the support of her husband, Brian Miller, and daughter, Sadie, Aurum will now publish Elisabeth's memoir in November this year. A tribute to an actress whose most famous character became a hero and a role model for generations of young fans, the book traces Elisabeth's story from humble beginnings in post-war Liverpool, through a joyful career in the theatre, to unexpected fame alongside Doctors Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. In the process it explores the far from glamorous realities of filming in TV's golden age, the strange and wonderful world of Doctor Who fandom, and what it was like to return to the show over thirty years after Sarah Jane first set foot in the TARDIS. Elisabeth's editor at Aurum, Sam Harrison said: 'I remember my first meeting with Elisabeth - the hilarious and eye-opening stories she had to tell and my feeling of elation that she wanted to turn them into a book. Having grown up watching her as Sarah Jane Smith it was a personal dream come true. She was a fantastic person to work with - fun but utterly professional - and it's incredibly sad that she's no longer with us. I'm glad he had a chance to share some of her memories in this book. I hope it will make a fitting tribute to a great actress and a wonderful woman.'

The series is available for pre-order here.
The Valeyard Judges: Let's Kill Hitler Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:21 PM PDT When last I deigned to speak to you mortals I had been forced to accept a job on this damned website. Since then the Dark Son of Gallifrey has failed to rise and I find that I must take up residence in the viewing room of my TARDIS and watch Let's Kill Hitler since it would appear I'm going to have to review the blasted thing. Still, it's a promising start; "Let's Kill Hitler". Well, yes, lets. I suppose one could take issue with the positioning of that apostrophe. Surely "Let us Kill Hitler", "Lets Kill Hitler" or even "Shall we Kill Hitler?" would have worked better from a grammar point of view. But I digress. Frankly the idea of killing the Fuhrer is one that appeals to me. The man is a fixed point in history, think of the damage you could do to the timeline if you were to remove him from events prematurely. This might not be so bad after all. So I settle down in my favourite leather couch with a glass of Julius's wine of choice and a family sized packet of Chilli Heatwave Doritos and wait for the carnage to begin. Which it does with a "Previously on Doctor Who", still I shouldn't complain at least I don't have to sit through that self obsessed Pond monologue that the Americans do. I swear that girl thinks she's the star of the show. Infernal cheek of the girl. Still, that Madam Kovarian is quite easy on the eye, so maybe this isn't without merit. Oh look, he's got a new coat. Trying to emulate my Gallifreyan robes by the look of it. It hardly matters, he's still wearing a Tweed jacket in his mind. Mels? Those insipid Ponds have a friend called Mels? If she gets into my TARDIS I'll be quite displeased. It was bad enough having Miss Carrot Juice and there's only a consonant of a difference. No, wait a moment, I think I may have judged her prematurely. She's holding my earlier self (hold on, that's a spoiler! – Ed) at gun point. Still things move downhill from here as our "heroes" accidently save Hitler. Fools! Didn't they see the name of this episode? Metatextual curses. Mind you, this Rory fellow seems to have some promise as he keep happily punches Hitler in the face. Now hold on a second, these numbskulls seem to have identified my TARDIS as belonging to a War Criminal. Well, I don't like to boast, but as it happens I'm really quite proud of my track recor… They're talking about Mels? She's the War Criminal? I knew that girl had potential! She's welcome back on my TARDIS anytime. Except Hitler just shot her. Oh well, easy come easy go. My interest is kept mostly due to the fact that Mels regenerates into River and she takes great pleasure in trying to kill my younger self, which suits me fine as I've done the math and I'm next in line. "I'm dying." Yes, yes you probably are. Try and do it like a Time Lord rather than a whiney part human half breed, there's a good chap. My excitement builds as he drags himself and his floppy hair back into what is about to become my TARDIS. Such is my elation that I can live with his need to cycle through his sorry collection of companions since 2005, it would seem even the Doctor has a Post 2005 bias. Not to worry, the 80s are about to arrive back in style. I start looking out my best robes as my about to be predecessor goes through all the self indulgent motions that my prior regenerations have taken to doing since our return from cancellation. I'm given brief pause for thought as someone mutters something about the capacity for regeneration being suspended, but that's fine, it's not as if I've ever really followed the classical regeneration protocols. And it looks like he's actually going to kick the bucket this time, he's lying on the steps and not even my superior intellect can divine a way out of this for him. Here I come! Hold on, what's she doing? Why is she glowing like that? SHE CAN'T DO THAT! How does he do it? How does he continue to cheat death like that? Just when I think this Moffat chap might not so bad he turns out to be a bigger regeneration tease than that Davies bounder. I think I just lost interest in the rest of the episode. They can do whatever the hell they want now, I just don't care. [Finish the review - Ed] I beg your pardon, mortal? [Finish the review, please. Sir - Ed] Very well. There's a whole bunch of timey wimey stuff in which the Doctor successfully bypasses the Pond's parental instincts and then they play end credits. The end. Now leave me. I have much to consider from this debacle and a packet of Doritos to finish.
