| THE DARK HUSBAND - PRODUCERS NOTES Posted: 20 Mar 2008 05:44 AM CDT THE DARK HUSBAND - PRODUCER'S NOTES By David Richardson It's the week before Christmas, and most people are out and about buying their presents. As I arrive at The Moat studios, I'm painfully aware that I'm yet to buy my first gift - there's just been too much to do. And the world is so busy, in fact, just to get this recording to fit with everyone's schedules, we've had to separate the two recording days - we do half of the story on Tuesday 18th, the rest on Friday 21st. Which is bad news for poor Philip Olivier, who has to travel down from Liverpool and back twice in one week. He doesn't seem to mind at all, but I can't help feeling rotten about the fact. And it's not easy for Sylvester either, who's in the middle of playing The Fool in a run of King Lear; last night he apparently got to bed at some ridiculous hour, and here we have him working early in the morning, saving the world yet again. Anyway, here we are on one of the moons of the planet Tuin, in a respite from a centuries old war. Listen to the finished story and you'd think that the studio was buzzing with people, but today it's a small band of actors: apart from Sylvester, Phil and Sophie, there's Danny Webb. Oh, and Sophie has brought her sons in too, so while she's busy being Ace I'm the acting child minder. Not having kids of my own, I wonder briefly how to entertain them; I start singing songs and they think I've gone bonkers. They sit quietly, happily painting and doing arts and crafts. They are, quite simply, the best-behaved children I've met in my life. Star attraction for the day (aside from my singing turn) is Danny, back again so soon after playing Byron in The Girl Who Never Was, simply on the basis that a) he can play anything brilliantly, and b) he's one of the nicest actors in town. We won't say too much about what he has to do in the story, because that would spoil it, but let's just say he's a very physical actor, even on audio. We'd all be entranced as he'd wave his fists in the air, or strike a pose. Philip thought it was fantastic. When I pointed out in the green room that Danny had taken on a new stance, clenching and unclenching his fists while delivering a line, Phil leapt out of his seat and was in the gallery to take a look. We all thought Danny was stunning. Three days later, and we were back to Tuin. Sophie's children weren't around today, but we had gained the considerably naughtier Sean Connolly and Katarina Olsson, who were playing dual roles as The Bards and the Ir Computers. They were great fun, and absolutely threw themselves into their odd roles. We also had a lot of visitors that day: Peter Ware dropped in to cover it in Doctor Who Magazine, and had so much fun he stayed around for the pub in the evening. Grant Kempster, who was designing the CD cover, dropped in to see the story in the making; he did a quick sketch of what he thought it should be. In the end, that sketch became pretty much what you see in the CD centrespread instead. And Toby, the studio engineer and the unsung hero of the Audio Adventures of Doctor Who, catered in the Christmas spirit. There was a fabulous buffet, endless mince pies and crackers - everyone got into the spirit of the occasion, and you'll see from the photos that it was quite a party. | ||
| Posted: 20 Mar 2008 03:40 AM CDT Just when thought everything had gone quiet on the news front, the latest SFX Magazine special is released in stores - and features ample features relating to "The Sarah Jane Adventures". 'Ya see, this is no mere special - it's a Doctor Who special, dedicated to all things NuWho (and OldWho, too, come to think of it!) There's a revealing interview with Sarah Jane herself, Elisabeth Sladen! The actress decides that she probably did her best acting work whilst beside Jon Pertwee's Doctor - not Tom Baker's, like everybody would have guessed. She also tells of her discomfort filming "K9 & Company", and the warmth she felt returning to Doctor Who in "School Reunion". Oh, and from now on, Sarah is most definately a northern lass! The magazine also prints a 'lost' interview with Jon Pertwee, conducted in 1986 - long before his death. Apparently producer Peter Bryant had cast Pertwee in the role as he expected/wanted a very whimsy, musical Third Doctor - but Pertwee wasn't having any of it! He also reveals that Katy Manning (Jo Grant, the Third Doctor's second companion) was brought up by Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli! Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks (the creative team who originally hired Sladen for the role of Sarah) also discuss their time on the show, as well as the new adventures on telly today. If that wasn't enough there's a full episode guide (with reviews) of the complete first series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures" - from 'Invasion of the Bane' through to 'The Lost Boy'. It's a very positive, fan-pleasing tour guide of the series. On top of all that, there's a poll of SFX reader's top 25 companions - and Sarah Jane Smith comes in at number... wait for it... 1!! Yep, that's right. She's not just my fave, or even yours - but the vast majority of SFX's readership, too! (She won by a *vast* majority, according to the writer who compiled the results) SFX Collection 33: Doctor Who special is on sale now, priced £5.99 - and includes a free book, "Made of Steel" featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones. | ||

| Posted: 20 Mar 2008 02:30 AM CDT Copies of Torchwood: The Official Magazine issue number three are now on sale in WHSmith stores, Forbidden Planets and lots of other good newsagents too, across the UK! For a full rundown of what to expect clicky here to read how the editorial team are themselves advertising the contents of the issue. Meanwhile here's my own cross section of the new issue: 1: The news section - There's an exciting Radio 4 Torchwood episode heading our way later this year - and it's penned by Joseph Lidster; GE Fabbri, the company behind Doctor Who's "Battle in Time" card game, will be launching Torchwood trading cards on April 16th (click here for more); News on April's "Rift" convention in Bayswater and a ratings update. 2: Episode Previews - Chris Chibnall is cast "Adrift", then collects together "Fragments" and finally - this season - he discusses the fatal "Exit Wounds". 3: Burn Gorman (Owen Harper) - the actor talks about the life (and death) of his character, and reflects on the past two years. He reveals that it was Russell T Davies' idea to 'kill' off a main character; although originally it was intended that Ianto would die (the Jack/Ianto 'shippers won't like that little revelation...) Later on his discusses other acting roles, with have included the likes of "Bleak House" and "Fred Clause", and his desire to return to the stage. 4: Behind the scenes - how Owen's underwater sequence in "A Day in the Death" was realised for the screen. 5: Set visit - filming "Something Borrowed". 6: Richard Briers (Parker) - following his guest appearence in "A Day in the Death", Briers talks about his Torchwood experiences ("...it can be hard to always play someone who's dying.") as well as some of his other recent - and not so recent - acting roles. 7: Comic strip - the Toshiko centric "Jetsam" by Brian Williamson. 8: Jonathan Fox Bassett - the director talks about the making of his first Torchwood episode, "From Out of the Rain". 9: Transformation - Rob Mayor from Millennium FX reveals the make-up process that went into Martha Jones' aging in "Dead Man Walking". 10: Where's your head at? - this month Dark Talk host, Abigail Crowe! 11: Production notes - Chris Chibnall runs through the eight stages of writing a Torchwood script. 12: Also... - mini interviews with Matt Jones, Eve Myles, Kai Owen, Colette Brown, Nerys Hughes, Andy Goddard and costume designer Ray Holman. 13: Next issue - a 100 page special! There's interviews with Naoko Mori and Kai Owen; a comprehensive second series episode guide; Richard Stokes reviews the series; on the set of both "Adrift" and "Fragments" as well as a behind the scenes look of series finale, "Exit Wounds". 14: Adverts - "Heroes Magazine"; "Supernatural Magazine"; "CSI: New York Magazine" - only three Titan magazine adverts this month!! All the other previews are either a) related to Torchwood/Torchwood Magazine, or b) have good reason to be inside a sci-fi/fantasy based publication. Result! Things we learnt this issue... + Originally the Ghost Maker ("From Out of the Rain") was to remove his victim's shadows - but Russell T Davies removed this element because he thought it'd look unconvincing on screen. Instead, victims had their last breaths taken from them. + Eve Myles and Nerys Hughes performed together in a comedy pilot five(ish) years ago. + Kai Owen is engaged. When he does indeed get married he hopes "I won't have to go at my mam with a chainsaw!" + After viewing the rushes for "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" writer Chris Chibnall knew that James Marsters was so good he had to return for the finale! A few teases from the episode previews: Adrift - "In many ways, it's probably our most adult story to date, because it's about emotions you don't necessarily feel until you become a parent, when you become utterly, utterly protective towards your own children." Chris Chibnall Fragments - "We know [Jack] was brought back to life after he was extirminated by the Daleks, and we know that he used his wrist strap to travel to Earth in 1869. But I wanted to look at the day-to-day aspects of how he actually got by on Earth during that time. It's more than a century until we see him again, so what was he doing, exactly, for all those years?" Chris Chibnall Exit Wounds - "We know from the end of episode one that [Captain John] has found Gray, somehow, somewhere. And that news is obviously going to feed into this story." Chris Chibnall Torchwood: The Official Magazine issue 3 is out now, priced £3.75. The 100-page Issue 4 is released April 17th (presumably costing £4.99) You can read the magazine's official Facebook group here. | ||
