Johnny Byrne

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 11:04 AM CDT

Several sources are reporting the death yesterday (April 3) of Johnny Byrne. Byrne penned three stories for the classic Doctor Who series: "The Keeper of Traken" starring Tom Baker (in which the character Nyssa, played by Sarah Sutton, eventually became a companion); and "Arc of Infinity" and "Warriors of the Deep" starring Peter Davison. Byrne also penned a film script for the series which was not used. Byrne also wrote eleven episodes of "Space:...

Two's Company

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 04:47 AM CDT

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine confirms several details regarding the second series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures". There's a new producer joining the show; Nikki Smith takes over Matthew Bouch's job, as Bouch moves up to occupy the "Series Producer" role.

According to Russell T Davies, "The first block consists of four episodes, to be directed by Michael Kerrigan. Michael's an old Doctor Who hand, having directed 1989's Battlefield, and was a brilliant choice to launch Series Two, so it's great to welcome him to Upper Boat."

Writers for the 12 part series include Phil Ford, Gareth Roberts and Joseph Lidster.

The magazine also has a look behind the scenes of 1975's "The Sontaran Experiment", in the lastest 'Fact of Fiction' feature - to tie in with the return of the Sontarans to the new series, opposite David Tennant's Doctor, in a two part adventure, "The Sontaran Stratagem" / "The Poison Sky" which airs on BBC One later this month.

Also included (for anybody interested!) is a terrific Steven Moffat interview, a brand new comic strip, and a querstion & answer session with Who's current overlords Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson - which is worth a read in itself because one of my questions got published, and answered by the trio. Result!

Doctor Who Magazine issue 394 is out now, priced £3.99.

Elsewhere, and SFX Magazine confirms the reason why, ultimately, the BBC chose not to film the second and third seasons of the SJA together in one huge, money saving production block: "It's an easier life," Davies tells the magazine, "If we can make series two and then get a commission for series three next year and make series three." Hmmm... BBC spin, anyone?

Finally, the press were granted a preview screening of the first two episodes of Doctor Who's fourth series earlier this week, which concluded with a series long trailer - and numerous journalists have confirmed the presence of Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith!

Yep, she's definitely back for the finale!

Preview: Episode Thirteen

Posted: 04 Apr 2008 04:22 AM CDT

What's it called?

"Exit Wounds"

Who's it credited to?

Chris Chibnall, writer ("Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", "Fragments") and Ashley Way, director ("End of Days", "Reset")

What do we know?

Captain John Hart is back - and he's brought somebody with him! It's time for revenge, amid some very uncomfortable rumours, and not everybody will live to tell the tale...

Major guest stars?

Kai Owen plays "Rhys", James Marsters is "Captain John Hart" and Lachlan Nieboer appears as Jack's brother, "Gray".

Rest of the best

Paul Marc Davis ("Cowled Leader"), Golda Rosheuvel ("Dr. Angela Connolly"), Syreeta Kumar ("Nira Docherty"), Cornelius Macarthy ("Charles Gaskell") and Paul Kasey ("Weevils").

Surprise me, spoiler boy

The episode ends with team Torchwood (whoever survives...) sat looking out over Cardiff Bay.

Reviewing the reviews

Fantastic! A real rollercoaster ride according to sources like DigitalSpy, the Radio Times and members of the Doctor Who Forum who's seen previews of the episode.

When's it on?

Tonight on BBC Two, from 9pm. It's repeated next Tuesday, at 7 o'clock.

What about America?

"Exit Wounds" airs on BBC America Saturday 19th April @ 9pm. The BBC America schedule can be found here. The episode will also be available in glorious High Definition - on HD-Net - from May 5th.

Look to the future...

A special radio episode airs on BBC Radio 4 sometime over the next couple of months. Then, if you really wanna know [HIGHLIGHT] Captain Jack Harkness returns to the world of 'Doctor Who' for the fourth series finale, "Journey's End", in June. Torchwood is *expected* to return for a new series of adventures in 2009.

Excitement level?

****1/2 - I loved Marsters' first appearence as Hart earlier on in the series run - he brings a lot of fun, and humour to the show. Aside from this... this is where it's all been leading. Gray! Owen's deadalive! John Hart! Owen & Tosh! Jack & Ianto! Last year's finale "End of Days" wasn't great, but surely this'll go a long way to redeem things.

And that's all folks! Series two is done and dusted; but it's been fun, yeah?

Till next year...

Wahey! At last the media feeding frenzy has begun! Tuesday evening saw the press preview and Doctor Who was all over the papers and the interweb the following day with some mixed reactions, but mostly positive.

Mind you, what amused me most was the fact that a few Doctor Who stories got published earlier on that day. That day being 1st April, I hasten to add. First up, we had the revelation (mentioned in the last Newsround… because it amused me so) that Sarah Jane Smith and Captain Jack would be getting it on in the next series of Torchwood! Thanks to Torchwood.tv's mysterious correspondent for that wonderful wind-up!

The 3rd and final part of the Kasterborous Round Table 2007 should also be on line today for your perusal. Go visit. Read more articles. While you're there, why not join the forum and join in with the debate amongst a bunch of fans with a more mature view of the world than some other forums. When I say mature, I mean fans that are constructive rather than destructive towards the show they profess to love.
