| Theatres, Reality TV and quizzes! Posted: 06 Apr 2008 09:20 PM CDT My tour is now entering its last three weeks. We have just completed two very succesful in Richmond and Guildford and I head off to Cheltenham tomorrow, which is usually well attended too. I was very sad to learn that that wonderful theatre The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guidford had lost its Arts Council Funding in the latest bizarre rethink by the Arts Council of what it should fund. I am at a loss to understand how such a wonderful and consistent producer of good work should be penalised financially, when it should be perfectly clear even to the inhabitants of that ivory tower The Arts Council that the theatre is just too small in terms of seating to attract the size of audience that would keep it viable and needs a public subsidy. And we are in danger of asset stripping the Arts in this country and leaving a dismal heritage for future generations. What do we remember about the 16th Century today? The rrt, the music, the architecture, the plays of Shakespeare etc etc. Those are the things that survive the centuries and are a mark of a civilised society. Thank goodness Jamie Barber who runs the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre is a resourceful and passionate theatre manager. I have no doubt he will find sponsorship and alternative funding and the theatre will survive, I hope. But neighbouring theatres in Farnham and Leatherhead have closed never to re-open, so we keep our fingers crossed. The weather is playing its usual tricks for this time of year. hello daffodils; hello cherry blossom - ah yes - hello too snow, ice and howling winds. Thank goodness I managed to cut the grass before the snow fell. This means that our cats can't creep up on the birds through the long grass and catch them. One of our two "kittens" now a year old, stalked a female muntjac deer that was feeding in our garden yesterday. The deer was well aware of the little ginger herbert that was approaching her while she was tucking into the deer food that my wife provides for our local wildlife population and studiously ignored her. It was only when Pop (they are called Pip and Pop) got close enough to realise how big the deer was that she realised she was on a loser here and pretended (as cats are very good at doing) that she was there for another purpose all together. The first episode of the new series of Doctor Who was watched with great interest at Baker Towers.I was desperate to get hold of sum of those "Adipose" pills, and would happily see those little fat people toddling off through my cat flap in the middle of the night. Ah well dream on! Russell T Davies certainly knows how to put a series together - the final shot was brilliant - I won't say any more in case anyone reading this hasn't seen it, but it is a very clever hook to get us all to watch the rest of the series. I wouldn't miss it anyway! Great stuff. My daughters and I have also been drawn into the search for Nancy. I think as a professional actor myself I ought to be more sniffy about these talent search programmes - and understand exactly where Kevin Spacey is coming from when he complains that the programmes give free publicity to West End Musicals, which cannot help the attendance at straight plays. But nonetheless they are compelling television. I think the brave young girls who put themselves in the firing line are quite remarkable. The work and the pressure must be enough to give them heart attacks on a weekly basis. The favourites at Baker Towers are Sarah, Jodie and Jessie in that order. But we are constantly amazed at the praise that is heaped by the judges on candidates that we can't bear. They may look better in the studio than they do on screen, I suppose. The other programme we currently have set on repeat record is The Apprentice, which I love to watch when I return late at night from the theatre while I eat my supper. We were incandescent this week that the dreadful harpie who led the losing team got escaped the firing line at the expense of the poor girl who she manoeuvred into the firing line. Good television though. I have been entertaining myself greatly this week in a good cause on a website where you test your vocabulary and help raise funds to feed the third world at the same time. Have a go. You have three options to choose from to supply the correct meaning of a word and each guess supplies grains of rice. I have fed a fair few in my quest for the perfect score but have still only managed to get 52 points! (You get a point per three correct answers and lose 2 points for each wrong answer). Twenty grains of rice are donated for each answer. It soon adds up. The website is http://www.freerice.com/ Good luck. See you soon. | ||
