The recent announcement that Russell T Davies had withdrawn from giving a masterclass at the Edinburgh festival has been tempered by news that Steven Moffat will replace him! A Shape of Things to Come

Posted: 13 Aug 2008 04:59 AM CDT

BBC Radio 4's special audio Torchwood adventure, "Lost Souls", is now confirmed as airing on Wednesday September 10th, from 2:15pm. Broadcasting as part of the radio station's day long dedication to CERN's (European Organization for Nuclear Research) the piece features the vocal talents of John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto Jones) and special guest Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones).

The official synopsis:

"Somewhere out there in that chaos of darkness and light, of science and protons, of gods and stars and death... somewhere there's an answer."

The Torchwood Institute was founded by Queen Victoria in 1879 to protect the British Empire against the threat of alien invasion. By 2008, all that remains of the organisation is a small team based in Cardiff. And now, following the tragic deaths of two of their colleagues, the remaining three – Captain Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones – have to protect the human race against another unknown force from the darkness.

Martha Jones, ex-time traveller and now working as a doctor for a UN task force, has been called to CERN – the world's largest particle physics laboratory in Geneva – where they're about to activate the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The LHC is a particle accelerator which has been built deep underground in a 27km tunnel under Switzerland and France. Once activated, the collider will fire beams of protons together, re-creating conditions a billionth of a second after the Big Bang – and potentially allowing the human race a greater insight into what the universe is made of.

But so much could go wrong – it could open a gateway to a parallel dimension, or create a black hole – and now voices from the past are calling out to people and scientists have started to disappear...

Where have the missing scientists gone? What is the secret of the glowing man? What is lurking in the underground tunnel? And do the dead ever really stay dead?

Written by Joseph Lidster, the story guests Lucy Montgomery and Stephen Critchlow. It's set after the climatic events of series two's finale, "Exit Wounds".

Meanwhile issue 8 of Torchwood Magazine, due for release tomorrow, confirms the title of series three's five episode long arc - it'll be called collectively "Torchwood: Children of Earth".

Russell T Davies confirms to the magazine's news team that principal photography is set to commence on August 18th. It'll continue in Cardiff until November - with Euros Lyn helming all five episodes. Davies comments that, more than ever before, the show will be "director-led" and "will look absolutely amazing."

As anybody who attended San Diego's Comic Con at the tailend of July will know, BBC America has aquired the rights to show Torchwood's third season - which will broadcast shortly after its UK debut sometime in Spring 2009.

In other news, wave one of Getretro/Scificollector's Torchwood action figure has seen its release date pushed back to September. It includes figures of Jack, Gwen, the Cyberwoman and a 'snarling' Weevil. Wave two is expected in November, and will include figures of John Hart, a Blowfish, Ianto - and possibly Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato.

Titan Books releases the first Torchwood Yearbook on August 22, and it features new stories from Joseph Lidster, Steven Saville, David Llewellyn, Andy Lane and Trevor Baxendale. It's 96 pages long, features archive material from previous issues of Torchwood Magazine, and will be priced £7.99.

Finally, confirmation that Eve Myles will be guest starring in BBC One's latest Saturday night filler... erm... sorry, drama "Merlin". She appears in the show's very first episode as a character called Mary Collins. Expect to see the show from next month onwards...

The Lost Toy

Posted: 12 Aug 2008 02:13 AM CDT

A few months ago, The Forbidden Planet whet our appetites by listing a Sarah Jane Adventures Board Game. This was due to be released on July 30th and cost around about £17.99. The aim of the game was to "repel an alien invasion as you attempt to be the first player to collect four extraterrestrial artefacts." It even came with a battery-powered Mr Smith decoder!

I recently noticed that The Forbidden Planet had taken down the listing, so I decided to get in touch with Toy Brokers, the manufacturers of the board game. Having just got off the phone with them, I'm sad to report that the release of the product has been permanently cancelled.

What a huge shame, it looked like a fantastic board game! Unfortunately rumours suggest that Toy Brokers aren't the only ones looking to pull their SJA merchandise. Character Options, the manufacturers of the SJA toysets, may be pulling the plug on their Sarah Jane line, too. More news as we get it.

It is not terribly surprising to see Blink win the Hugo for Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. I was pulling for Paul Cornell, but that was as much because Moffat already has two of them and not anything against Blink in particular -- I think the Human Nature/Blink combination is probably the best single DVD of Doctor Who in existence -- and possibly even the best possible Doctor Who DVD in existence.

Of course, it'll be interesting to see if Moffat will be able to keep winning Hugos once he is the showrunner...

The image "http://www.bbc.co.uk/wiltshire/content/images/2005/01/25/daemons_203x152.jpg" cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.News of The Sarah Jane Adventures second series conclusion - which features Sarah Jane and Luke thrown back in time to a 1950s village fete - reminded me of an interesting point.

Since nuWho returned, we've had fat green aliens, fat green aliens and Catherine Tate providing frivolous, and at times unnecessary comedy. We've had space opera, base under siege, TARDIS acrobatics and regenerations, returning friends, foes, future companions and whispers...

...but we haven't had a mysterious English village as seen in The Daemons or The Android Invasion.

Nice to see then that The Sarah Jane Adventures is attempting to level things out. We haven't even had a real village in Torchwood, just a small town or that bizarre cannibal episode that is better off forgotten.

So there's one thing on the list of stuff to look out for under The Grand Moff. Scary villages.

Canadians rejoice! Season Two of Torchwood cometh!

Canada's Space: The Imagination Station picked up series two when Torchwood co-producer Canadian Braodcasting Company elected not to air Torchwood for its second season. The two hour season premere will air on Friday, August 8th at 9:00pm EDT

Because of the CBC's involvement with season one, Space: TIS won't be able to air the first season episodes, nor any of the Doctor Who series, which may cause a little confusion amongst newer viewers to the series. So the fine folks at Space: TIS have put up a good web presence to help Canadians who are new to the show get up to speed.

Opinions? Everyone has one...

Posted: 03 Aug 2008 07:05 PM CDT

Scottish comedian and comedy actress Elaine C Smith has a column in The Sunday Mail. She doesn't use the space very wisely.

Why?

Here, let's see:

I'VE never watched Dr Who since I was 10 and was petrified by the Cybermen.

I
don't really get the obsession but I am a big fan of David Tennant and
I understand why he is refusing to sign Dr Who memorabilia while
playing Hamlet for the RSC.

He knows most of it will end up on eBay and making money for professional autograph hunters.

Ewan
McGregor did the same when he was in Guys And Dolls but the stage door
was queued out with Star Wars geeks. What is it with sci-fi fans? Why
do they get so obsessive about it?

I suppose the truth is out there.

By her own admission, she doesn't "get it" - so why waste her and the paper's readers' time writing about it?

As for Mr Tennant refusing autographs - well I haven't seen it printed anywhere that he was behind the decision. Ms Smith would do well to note that his co-star is the face of two major US sci fi franchises over the last 20 years, and it's more than likely that both stars agreed with the RSC that this decision should be made and announced.

Jeez, would someone pay me to ponce in front of a keyboard for five minutes to fill a bit of space in their Sunday rag? Looks p*ss easy from here...

DWO WhoCast Episode 82

Posted: 01 Aug 2008 01:00 PM CDT

Series 4 of Doctor Who is now well and truly over, so its time for the WhoCast to go classic, as Tony and Trev have a look at one of the Doctor's deadliest foes, the Cybermen. We cover their appearances in the original series in depth.

Our dear friend Seb has been busy out there for us getting some exclusive interviews, and in this episode he talks with Dave Tremont from the WETA Studios, talking with him about their exciting range of Doctor Who collectables. He also happened to talk to another exciting voice from Doctor Who, but you will just have to listen to the show to find out!

Along with the news and chit chat, Episode 82 of the DWO WhoCast is just what the Doctor ordered!

Send in your feedback to us at feedback@thewhocast.com. MP3s are always preferred. It would be worth the purchase of a microphone for your PC just to hear your thoughts on an upcoming WhoCast!

Stolen Earth, stolen scene

Posted: 01 Aug 2008 06:04 AM CDT

Wow! I've been meaning to post a reaction post to "Stolen Earth", but I just haven't had the time-I'm sorry!! Since "Journey's End" is on tonight, I'll probably be posting a reaction to both episodes soon.

For now-I've got a missing scene from the U.S. broadcast of "Stolen Earth". Even though it's not a Sarah Jane scene, I figured you guys wouldn't mind knowing what was missing!

As far as I can tell, only one scene was cut: it was the scene right before Sylvia and Wilt meet up with Rose. The Daleks were rounding up the humans, and Wilt and Sylvia were watching from round the corner of a house. One father who was being round up said he wasn't going to go, and told his family to go back inside. Then he threw something at the Dalek and told them to go back where they came from. The Daleks then got into attack formation, screamed "Maximum extermination!" and destroyed the entire house! Sylvia was begging her dad to come in, and he said no, he had 'this!'. "It's a paint gun!" He told her to look at the eye piece-he figured he could blind them with a shot of paint.

Don't forget! Part 2, "Journey's End", airs tonight on SciFi, starting at 8:30pm, EST. Yup-a half hour early! SciFi has an hour and a half block for this episode, so hopefully the cuts will be quite minimal (5 minutes or so, as opposed to 20-25, had there only been an hour).

Only seven and a half hours to go! I can't wait! :)

That's a wrap, folks!

After almost four months of shooting, filming for the second series of the Sarah Jane Adventures has finally concluded in Cardiff! The cast and crew were spotted saying their goodbyes to eachother on the Bannerman Road set two days ago, and most of them will no doubt be heading off to their respective homes around the country to have a well-earned summer break.

Due to all the post-production work that needs to be completed, we won't see SJA back on our screens for another two months. But from the glimpses we've seen of the second series so far, it'll be well worth the wait!

Fantastic Four Day

Posted: 30 Jul 2008 04:19 AM CDT

Today in the USA, tomorrow in the UK, is the day the first issue of my miniseries, Fantastic FourTrue Story, is out from Marvel Comics. I'm very proud of it, it's the story of how Marvel's first family heads into the universe of fiction to save humanity, and runs into, well, initially, characters from Jane Austen, with chaotic results. ('Reader, I clobbered him.') So here's the first (very

DWO WhoCast Episode 81

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 01:00 PM CDT

Welcome back to normality - well, the closest to normality we know as Trev and Tony discuss the latest Big Finish audio play, 'The Death Collectors', rummage around IDW's Doctor Who comics - with a special preview of 'The Forgotton', and release more Joined Up Fandom upon the world. Also, feel Trevor's pain as Tony, for one podcast only, takes control of the edit. With heh, heh, hilarious consequences.

Expect the odd little treat. Along with the news, chit chat and something special at the end of the show, Episode 81 of the DWO WhoCast is just what the Doctor ordered!

We always want your thoughts, (especially when they disagree with Trevor), so please get your feedback into us at feedback@thewhocast.com. MP3s are always preferred. It would be worth the purchase of a microphone for your PC just to hear your thoughts on an upcoming WhoCast!

"Beckham; Sarah Jane Beckham"

Posted: 29 Jul 2008 09:23 AM CDT

I've been catching up on all the latest SJA set reports, and it looks like the second series will be bigger and better than what we saw last year! The rest of this post contains SPOILERS for episodes 9 and 10, which make up the untitled Adventure Five - so look away if you don't want any surprises blown for 'ya!

HIGHLIGHT TO REVEAL...

The episodes revolve around Sarah Jane and Luke being somehow taken back in time to the 1950's, to Foxglove Village - at a time when the local fete is taking place. What's unusual about all this?! Sarah's parents are there too, as is a likkle baby Sarah Jane Smith! Trouble is, grown up Sarah doesn't remember momma (Barbara) or her papa - they died in a car accident when she was still a baby. Can Sarah do what it takes to prevent herself from becoming an orphan, by changing the course of history?!*

Sounds great, albeit a little too similiar to a particular series one episode of Nu Who...

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!!

*Oh, one last sneaky spoiler!! Sarah introduces herself and Luke at one point as the Beckhams!
