| Posted: 24 Sep 2008 07:25 AM CDT If there's one issue being discussed among Doctor Who fans right now, it's the remarkable content of the book Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale, a series of correspondence between Russell T Davies and DWM's Benjamin Cook. Published on Thursday September 25th, Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale has been previewed in The Times as you may have seen already. This preview some very interesting information indeed, particularly about this Christmas' Doctor Who. Remember - this is all public domain stuff now,... | ||

| Posted: 24 Sep 2008 06:44 AM CDT The annual FantasyCon convention was held in Nottingham over the last weekend, and as usual I was there to hopefully sell some books, but mainly to meet up with friends and have a great - if slightly drunken - time. I arrived on Friday, and after dumping the books in the Dealer Room, headed off to see what might be happening. The organisers were busy filling the delegate bags with a pile of goodies kindly donated for the event, which this year included books, fliers, a poster, a smart little CD of erotic poetry by Sam Stone (on which I am one of the readers!), and a brilliant convention magazine. The first event of the weekend for me was the Quiz which took place on the Friday night. I was hosting, asking questions posed by the devious minds of Sandy Auden, John Aitken and Gary Couzens. The questions ranged from the hard to the impossible, and, as it was International Talk Like A Pirate Day, I had to do just that for some of the time. Initially it looked as though the room would be empty as there was a book launch for Humdrumming taking place at the same time, but we eventually managed to rustle up four teams and hopefully all had a good time. I was on a Doctor Who panel with friends Rob Shearman, Mark Morris, Simon Guerrier and Simon Clark and we had a great time, but barely scratched the surface of the subject. The audience seemed pleased though and it was great to chat about Telos' novellas and about the whole Doctor Who phenomenon. Overall it was an enjoyable affair, enlivened by much alcohol and bonhomie. FantasyCon is always a very friendly event, and it was good to make some new friends this year as well as catching up with people I'd not seen for a year! Here's to next year ... | ||
| Posted: 24 Sep 2008 05:44 AM CDT This week's Radio Times (date marked 27th September - 3rd October) has a two page article covering the start of the new SJA series. Not only are we taken on tour of the attic set, but there's interviews with Elisabeth Sladen and Russell T Davies. BEWARE! The rest of this post contains a number of SPOILERS regarding the new series... "We don't think of it as just a children's show," Says Sladen, in defence of her drama, "We tackle big issues - growing up, coming of age, relationships - but in a safe, supportive environment. Yes, there's evil, but good always wins, however scared you are." The article confirms some of those 'evils'; foes we expect to watch out for during the course of the series - which include Anthony O'Donnells Sontaran Commander Kaagh, the return of the Trickster (last seen in "Whatever Happened to Sarah-Jane?" and name checked in 'Who's "Turn Left") and a hint towards another familar foe - though the article doesnt't actually confirm it - the Bane. Ever wondered why the production team chose to have an attic as the series main interior set? Well, here's your answer, courtesy of Mr Russell T of Davies! "Attics are the stuff of fairy tales. They're magical, secret places. Kids always seem to have fun creeping up to the top of the house - whereas going down to the cellar is terrifying. I wanted this attic to be Sarah Jane's safe, special haven, far away from the dull and ordinary world." Well, there you go! Mark Braxton reviews the opening episode of the "richly deserved second series" on page 68, and though it's a highlight of the day's broadcasting, Braxton confirms that he didn't receive a preview disc in time to offer a full review (most journalists were shown the second adventure, "Day of the Clown", instead as it introduces new girl Rani Chandra). The current issue of the Radio Times, before you even think to ask, is out now priced £1.05! Meanwhile this week's issue of Doctor Who Adventures, No. 83, features a look at "The Last Sontaran" - and comes with a very cool SJA poster! Next week expect an interview with Elisabeth Sladen, possibly in character as Sarah! DWA issue 83 is out from tomorrow, priced £2.50. It includes a bizarre "Alice in Wonderland" styled comic strip, where Donna Noble watches as the world shrinks around her! | ||

| Posted: 24 Sep 2008 05:05 AM CDT Well, that was really nice! A few days in the Algarve, and your editor is fully refreshed and raring to go for another few months into and beyond Christmas. A very massive thanks to Mr Simon Mills for his Kopic's Newsround news updates to keep the candle burning in my absence, and to Anthony Dry for keeping the ship afloat. Also, thanks very much to all of our visitors over the past few weeks, who have confirmed that there's more to Doctor Who than just new news. So - what did I learn while hanging around Albufeira? Well, lots of things. For instance, soft Cornettos are rather nice, strawberries taste strawberrier on the continent and swordfish is a remarkable tasting fish. More importantly though - I didn't see any single reference to Doctor Who anywhere. Now I'm pretty certain I've read that Doctor Who has been dubbed into Portuguese, but it seems that it doesn't translate into the same sort of fanaticism over there that it does over here. This wasn't just a television/book/magazine thing either. There wasn't even any poorly made replicas amongst the poorly made replica Transformers and Star Wars toys. Quite literally, Portugal seems to be a No Who Zone. In fact, I didn't even refer to David Tennant, Daleks or the TARDIS in conversation while on holiday, and nor did I dream about Freema Agyeman. (I've been having that dream for a while now, and I'm starting to miss it!) I'm delighted to say, however, that thanks to Mr Brian Terranova, I did get the Issue #1s of both of IDW's Doctor Who series, Doctor Who and Doctor Who: The Forgotten - both waiting for me on my doormat when I landed yesterday. Cheers, Terra! | ||

I've arranged with the BBC and the organisers of Newcon in Northampton (11th-12th October) to premiere clips from my Afternoon Play adaptation of Iain Banks' 'The State of the Art' at the event. That'll be at 6.30pm on the Saturday night, and hopefully Iain himself will be on that panel to talk about the | ||

| Posted: 24 Sep 2008 12:15 AM CDT As part of this year's Children in Need appeal, the BBC are offering fans of Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures the chance to win a behind the scenes tour of Upper Boat - the studios where all three series are shot. The main interior of the SJA, Sarah's attic (which houses Mr. Smith), is located there - next to the TARDIS, and Torchwood Cardiff's Hub! The official announcement was made here, via the BBC Press Office. This Friday - live on Radio 1's Chris Moyles show - Russell T Davies, David Tennant and Catherine Tate will formally launch the competition, by unleashing upon the Great British public the very question they need to answer to be in with a chance of winning. Here's how the prize is described, "Visitors will tour the closely-guarded sets, come face-to-face with some of the Doctor's mortal enemies, and meet the behind-the-scenes teams who make it all happen – including the set designers, costumiers and make-up artists." Says Russell T Davies, ""This is so exciting – giving fans the opportunity to take a behind the scenes look at where we film Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures is just brilliant. It'll be the perfect opportunity for the whole family to experience something unique and truly extraordinary. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience – and the best thing is that all the money raised will go towards BBC Children in Need." The official BBC CiN website is housed here. This year's televisual appeal airs November 14th - the theme being "Do Something Different" (wasn't that last year's theme, too?!). | ||
| Posted: 23 Sep 2008 11:50 PM CDT Always loved spin-offs, I think, especially when they lead to crossovers - and there wasn't a better multi-series crossover, I honestly believe, than the finale to Doctor Who's fourth season, "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End". I mean, come on, it had it all - and who didn't love Sarah Jane meeting Captain Jack, or Donna Noble meeting Captain Jack... Ah, Donna Noble... the emotional backbone for the entire fourth series; and a character with so bleak a destiny that it doesn't bare thinking about. I mean, to forever forget the splendor and wonder of life with the Doctor? What's sadder than that?? Writer/Producer Russell T Davies reveals in his new book "The Writer's Tale" (a collection of emails - over 500 pages of them!! - he sent back and forth with DWM journalist Benjamin Cook, during the production of the 2008 series) that Catherine Tate, on one of the last days of filming, did talk to him about a potential return... "Catherine is begging to make an appearence in The Sarah Jane Adventures, because it's her daughter's favourite show, but I'm sitting here going, 'But how?!'" So there we have it... Catherine does want to return to the Doctor Who universe, in whatever form that return might take. [SPOILERS - highlight] There have been rumblings that Tate will return in one of next year's four Doctor Who specials, alongside John Simm as the Master. Catherine Tate does not appear in this latest SJA series, sadly. | ||
