Coming Soon Trailer Screens

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 09:10 AM PDT

118 screen caps from the 'Coming Soon' trailer shown after the Eleventh Hour.

The Telegraph says Matt Smith has taken up the mantle as the alien Time Lord perfectly, giving an A+ to the casting director and an A+ to Smith, while it describes Karen Gillan as a fine foil. The Mirror breaths a sigh or relief with the headline Phew.. a brilliant new Doctor Who saying the Beeb's best franchise is in safe hands while The Guardian said some of the plot devices were a brilliant conceit that puts a new spin on a 50-year-old dynamic.

Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive with over 80% of contributors to the Gallifrey Base poll rating the episode 8/10 or more. Doctor Who and Matt Smith have both been trending topics on twitter.

To mark the transmission the BBC Doctor Who website has been updated with behind the scenes material and a clean version of the theme music.

Overnight ratings will be released Sunday morning and will be available on the News Page.

Beth Chalmers Video Interview

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:50 AM PDT

There's a special treat for members of the Big Finish Group on Facebook - a video interview with actress Beth Chalmers, talking about her upcoming role as Raine Creevy in the second season of the Lost Stories.

The video can be viewed here. And if you're not a member of the group - come and join in the fun!

Raine is revealed!

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 01:33 AM PDT

Big Finish has revealed the casting of the Doctor's new companion for the upcoming second series of The Lost Stories. The unmade Season 27, which was planned for production in 1990 but abandoned, introduces Raine Creevy, a young, sophisticated safecracker who joins the Doctor on his adventures through space and time.

"Raine is sort of a beautiful flower growing on a bomb site," explains script editor Andrew Cartmel. "Her father is a dodgy character with underworld connections in London, and her background is in that milieu. But her parents wanted her to have a different and better life, so she's received the best education and been groomed for posh society. Of course, Raine being Raine she's reacted against this and she's developed her own taste for danger and excitement."

Raine is to be played by Beth Chalmers, an actress who has experience of working with Big Finish on the stories Time Reef, 45, Curse of the Daleks and Leviathan.

"This was the easiest bit of casting ever," says producer David Richardson. "Andrew's first script came in and the director, Ken Bentley, and I read it. Raine is gorgeous, sophisticated, intelligent and sassy – and Ken and I just turned to each other and said 'Beth'. We actually surprised her with the news while we were in the pub, enjoying a drink after recording our Sherlock Holmes play Holmes and the Ripper, in which she plays Mrs Hudson."

"I was just so thrilled to be asked," says Beth. "And, while I'm familiar with being in Doctor Who, it feels so special to be playing such a key character and to become a part of the show's long history. It's wonderful working with Sylvester again, and Big Finish have promised me that they'll take me to some conventions – which I'm looking forward to immensely!"

Doctor Who Magazine wins Guinness World record

Posted: 31 Mar 2010 11:48 PM PDT

Doctor Who Magazine has been named by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's Longest Running Magazine Based on a Television Series.

It joins Doctor Who, which itself is a record holder, having been named the Worlds Most successful sci-fi series in 2009.

The magazine was first published on 11th October 1979 and since then has published at least one issue every month, issue 420 being released this week. The award comes as the magazine enjoys one of its most successful periods in its history.

Originally part of Marvel Comics the magazine was first published as Doctor Who Weekly featuring the then current Doctor, Tom Baker, and a Dalek on its first cover. In September 1880 the magazine became Doctor Who Monthly before changing to Doctor Who Magazine in February 1984. The title was taken over by the current owners Panini in 1995 when the Italian based publisher purchased the Marvel UK catalogue.

The Magazine has had 11 editors over its long run, the longest serving being Clayton Hickman who edited 74 issues of the magazine between 2002 and 2007. Other long running editors include Gary Gillatt, (69 issues), John Freeman (49 issues), Alan McKenzie (48 issues), Gary Russell (37 issues) and Sheila Cranna (31 issues). Russell is now involved with the production of the current series as Script Editor.

The current editor is Tom Spilsbury who took over the magazine in 2007.

Stylin' SJA.

Posted: 31 Mar 2010 07:50 PM PDT

Filming for the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures kicked off in Cardiff earlier this week! With a host of new monsters, journeys to alien worlds and even a little time travel thrown in for good measure - Series 4 is looking set to be the most action-packed series to date!

But as with every new series of a show starring kids, there are always new challenges to face; the most prominent of these being the age of the cast...

The production staff attempted to delay father time by filming some of the fifth series back-to-back with the fourth. However, that didn't do much to tackle the existing problem of two of the 'child' stars being over 20, and the third sprouting up to a phenomenal height despite being a year older than the character he portrays. To solve the problem, there was only ever going to be one solution.

Style-icon Gok Wan, of Channel 4's How To Look Good Naked, has recently been recruited by the BBC to help make the SJA cast look five years younger! Though Gok was unavailable for comment, our insider sources have informed us that he has some big plans for the show's wardrobe over the next few episodes. And it's not only the kids who'll be getting a dose of his bold fashion pointers!

'He's thinking of dressing Sarah Jane up as Lady Gaga!' claims an unnamed member of the production crew. 'And he's going to build on Luke's angst from last series and make him all emo. He'll even start wearing gothy nail varnish!'

Sounds like Gok's really shaken things up this year =D For the better? We'll find out this Autumn when the fourth series starts airing!

The Kandy Man Returns

Posted: 31 Mar 2010 04:00 PM PDT

The seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) meets The Kandy Man

He caused millions of viewers to hide behind the sofa in the late '80's and now he's set to return in what promises to be an epic series finale. Yes, the Kandy Man is coming back!

The Kandy Man, for those unfamiliar, was a monster that featured in a Doctor Who story originally broadcast in 1988 called The Happiness Patrol. The terrifying creation was a homicidal robot resembling Bertie Bassett, and deliciously used sweets to kill its victims.

Steven Moffat said, "The Kandy Man is one of the shows most iconic monsters and I'm thrilled to bring another classic piece of Doctor Who history to modern audiences."

"We've had Daleks, Cybermen and the Master, but nothing can prepare the Doctor for the Kandy Man. There will be allsorts of danger for the Eleventh Doctor to avoid. He will find himself in some very sticky situations."

The Arc of Insanity on the TARDIS Tavern Podcast

The following is reposted from my blog at Art Trap Productions.

TARDIS_Tavern.jpgIt was months in the making, but it finally happened after Gallifrey 21, I was a guest 'bartender' on the TARDIS Tavern podcast! No sooner after completing my previous post about being on Cultdom Collective podcast, word came to me via @tardistavern that The Arc of Infinity episode we recorded last week has now been released.

Join the insanity with the insanely great hosts Steve Stacy and Sean Homrig of the TARDIS Tavern as we review 20th anniversary season kick off episode, Arc of Infinity with Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor. Not only do we discuss this 1983 story, but Doctor Who in general and how I happened to come across it all those years ago.

The Cult of Cultdom

The following is reposted from my blog at Art Trap Productions.

Cultdom Collective PodcastLast week I had the privilege of being on and joining my fellow co-host James Naughton on the Cultdom Collective podcast. The episode is a Gallifrey One preview show. Yes, the Doctor Who convention is a year away now at this point, my friends at Cultdom are getting a head start for those planning on attending next February in Los Angeles, CA.

Originally all I had done was record a short comment that was to be played on the show with James. Then the scheduling gods were shinning upon us, because they were recording at a time when I was able to join in on the fun, unbeknownst to James. They were playing my pre-recorded clip I made about meeting James in person for the first time at Gallifrey 20 when suddenly I was on the show myself.
