Big Bad Hints, Regenerations and Musicals?! Posted: 15 Apr 2010 03:15 PM PDT For promotion of the US launch of the fifth series this weekend, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Steven Moffat have been touring the States all week. Here's a round-up of some of the more interesting stories to come out of the numerous press discussions. In a Q&A session for Paley Centre for Media (transcribed by Newsarama), Matt Smith gave some hints about years 'big bad'.
Steven Moffat said the regeneration limit (by which Timelord can regenerate twelve times before finally dying) will be 'addressed' in Series 5.
In an interview with Fearnet.com Moffat discussed bringing back the Weeping Angels -
He also talked briefly about Neil Gaiman writing for Series 6 -
Finally the trio had a chat with the New York Times and whilst talking about the versatility of the show Moffat said, "Every genre we could do. We haven't done a musical yet – but we could!" Karen Gillan was enthused, "I'd love that, so much!" she said. Smith wasn't as keen though, "We need to hold fire on this people. I can't sing!" The Eleventh Hour premieres this Saturday 17th April on BBC America at 9pm/8c.

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 08:52 AM PDT There are only two days left until the Canadian premiere of The Eleventh Hour on SPACE, Saturday 17 April at 9:00 pm EDT. And as the new series of Doctor Who explodes onto our television screens, the new era of audience interaction will be exploding onto our computer screens. Only with less exploding and more talking. Beginning at 8:30 EDT on Saturday, spacecast.com will be hosting a live chat with a panel of Canadian experts, including comics artist Pia Guerra; journalist Warren Frey; comedian Gavin Stephens; and actor Robin Dunne. Moderating the discussion will be SPACE’s Natasha Eloi, producer, reporter, and a very familiar face to regular viewers of the channel. DWIN is proud to help support SPACE in its efforts to bring Doctor Who to its Canadian fans. We will be continuing our tradition of posting detailed (but fun!) episode breakdowns in our website’s TARDIS Files, and full reviews and coverage of the series will continue to appear in issues of our fanzine, Enlightenment. Stop by the DWIN website for more details on the TARDIS Files and how to subscribe to Enlightenment, and don’t forget to log on at http://www.spacecast.com this Saturday to share your thoughts on the series premiere. Brand-new Doctor, brand-new channel! Bit excited?
Posted: 15 Apr 2010 07:09 AM PDT The return of the Daleks is naturally a huge element of the BBC's Official Doctor Who site this week, with trailers, teasers and introductions on offer! While Steven Moffat has offered introductions for The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below, Mark Gatiss' Victory of the Daleks makes use of video intros on the BBC site from Matt Smith and Karen Gillan who both seem pretty thrilled with the episode! Meanwhile, you've probably already seen our gallery from Victory of the Daleks – but have you seen the new selection of 8 images from Digital Spy? Featuring the Doctor, Amy, Churchill, Bracewell and the "Ironsides" the only thing missing is the new Dalek design – but if you haven't seen the new Radio Times you can catch a glimpse of the politically-charged Daleks on the website for tabloid The Mirror. Don't forget also that the Radio Times website has a gallery in which the new Daleks are the centrepiece! Finally – Daleks were all the rage in Corsham this week as youngsters were charged with finding 7 of them among 50 shop windows in a competition organised by the town's Chamber of Commerce. Organisers chose a Dalek theme to coincide with the Corsham Sci-Fi day due to take place at 10am this Saturday at the community centre. Well done to young Sophie Sweetlove, Matthew Little and Ben Hunt! Let's hope they're home in time for Victory of the Daleks on Saturday evening at 6.15pm on BBC One!

Regeneration limit mystery to be resolved? Posted: 15 Apr 2010 06:23 AM PDT Many of you will be aware of the ongoing mystery surrounding the Doctor’s regeneration limit. In the Fourth Doctor classic series serial, The Deadly Assassin, it was established that Time Lords can cheat death through regenerating twelve times before they ultimately ‘run out’ of regenerations. It’s already known that the Master has regenerated more than twelve times [...]

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 04:55 AM PDT The Doctor Who promotional tour of the states continues with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan making appearances ahead of the series launch on BBC America this Saturday. The official site has a report on the preview showing of The Eleventh Hour at the Village East movie theatre on Wednesday night. The event, attended by Smith, Gillan and executive producer Steven Moffat, drew fans from around the country with the queue forming as early as 6.30am. The Daily Mail reports on the event, continuing its fascination with the outfits of Karen Gillan. BBC America have uploaded video of Matt Smith signing his first head to their Facebook page. Meanwhile the Paley Centre for Media has uploaded a video of the question and answer session which took place last Monday, and there is a report on the event on Newsarama. The stars have also given interviews to a number of local TV stations such as WCSH6 based in Portland, Maine, with Steven Moffat talking to FilmSchool Rejects. Doctor Who was even mentioned on the BBC's flagship current affairs programme Newsnight, when a guest from Washington said the leadership debates, taking place in the UK tonight, may draw an audience as big as that achieved by the arrival of a new Doctor Who. In Canada a special preview of The Eleventh Hour took place last week and is covered by The National Post. Steven Moffat talked to the event via Skype. We understand a 9 minute clip of The Eleventh Hour is available as a free download from iTunes Canada. On the other side of the world the new series also launches in Australia this weekend. Fans are reporting that the ABC is so heavily promoting the fact that the first episode will be available online from midnight on Friday via its iView service that a lot of viewers are missing the fact that it will actually be shown on ABC1 on Sunday, with ABC announcers specifically mentioning the iView showing but not the Sunday one.
5.3: Victory of the Daleks - DWO Preview Posted: 15 Apr 2010 04:04 AM PDT 5.3: Victory of the Daleks - DWO Preview News Dated: 15/4/2010 Below is the DWO (Spoiler Free) preview for 5.3: Victory of the Daleks: Having just watched Victory of the Daleks, we needed to take a few moments to recover from what was easily the best Dalek story since the new series returned in 2005. Set in World War II London (and space), the story features The Daleks latest plan to take over the universe...and it all begins right here in blighty! We're launched right into the chaos of war-torn London via the beating heart of the Cabinet War Rooms. The colour palette is just perfect with dark green and brown tones, and an ever so slightly grainy camera effect, which help to add to the historic believability factor.
Professor Bracewell believes he has created the ultimate machine to help win the war, in his Ironsides. The Doctor, however, knows these machines by another name...The Daleks. Writer, Mark Gatiss, provides his finest script to date, here, with what proves to be another intelligently plotted story for Series Five. A script that is fast (but not too fast), a script that never drops the ball, and one that can take the words 'Daleks', 'Jammy Dodger', 'Budgens' and 'Churchill' and pepper them into 45-minutes of unmissable TV. Victory of the Daleks is a far cry from the run-of-the-mill Dalek stories we have come to expect of late (Rob Shearman's Dalek being a much-loved exception). It takes some of the successful elements from the Classic series, and re-paints a new - more importantly, fresh story, that will take The Doctor's greatest enemy in a whole new direction. The special effects, really come into their own during the dogfight in space scenes - previously seen in the stunning Series Five trailer, and proves to be one of the most breathtaking FX sequences in the show's entire history to date. Think Star Wars meets The Dam Busters! Murray Gold's score helps polish off the piece, which features some musical nods to the previous Dalek episode scores, whilst weaving in a brand new one. Victory of the Daleks ticks all the boxes, circles them, highlights them, and gets a big fat stamp of approval.
