Posted: 19 Apr 2010 04:21 AM PDT Following in the footsteps of his Eighth, Ninth and Tenth incarnations and having a romantic relationship with his companion is not on the to-do list for the new Doctor, says Matt Smith. Smith told the Chicago Sun Times that such a romance could only go "so far." "There is always room for romance in Doctor Who but to be honest, the idea of the companion and the Doctor getting together is a bit of a tired story by now." However if recent press stories are to be believed, romance isn't off the cards for Matt himself – the star of Doctor Who has been linked to model Daisy Lowe recently, although her publicist firmly states:
Even more interesting for various papers is the realization that Smith might have had a brief relationship with former Rose Tyler actress Billie Piper in 2006; the pair have worked together on both the Sally Lockhart adaptations on BBC One (The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North) as well as The Secret Diary of a Call Girl. This is of course excellent fodder for the gutter press, so keep an eye out for more of this sort of nonsense as Matt becomes more and more famous for being the Doctor.

Eleventh Doctor and Jo Grant to visit Sarah Jane Adventures Posted: 19 Apr 2010 03:09 AM PDT The BBC Press Office has announced that The Sarah Jane Adventures will have two special guests when it returns for a fourth series this autumn. In a special two-part story written by Russell T Davies, Matt Smith will appear as the Doctor, and Katy Manning will guest as the Doctor's former companion Jo Grant. Manning starred in Doctor Who opposite the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, from 1971 to 1973. Manning has recorded audio adventures for Big Finish Productions, but this will be the first time she has played Jo Grant on television in thirty-seven years. The press release includes reactions from Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane Smith, Manning, and Sarah Jane Adventures executive producer Nikki Wilson: Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane comments: "It's a fantastic script and I can't wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us. I've known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her. I last met her in LA but this time we will be in Cardiff. LA was good but Cardiff is better." Katy Manning, who recently returned to live in the UK again, adds: "Playing Jo Grant again is something I never really considered. I was gob-smacked when they told me and I am over the moon. What an incredible little treat. I come home and this is one of the first things that happens." Executive producer Nikki Wilson says: "We are absolutely thrilled to be introducing Sarah Jane and the gang to both The Eleventh Doctor and Jo Grant, and to have a script penned by Russell T Davies is the icing on the cake! "Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story full of Russell's usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand-new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth. All this, plus a trip to an alien planet – a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures."

Posted: 19 Apr 2010 02:37 AM PDT Final figures for The Beast Below published today by BARB show the story was watched by 8.42 million viewers. The total is once more much higher than the initial overnight reported figure, implying many time-shifted the episode. On BBC One the story had 7.93 million watching, enough to make the story the fifth most watched on the channel for the week, behind four editions of EastEnders, and the eleventh most watched on all British television. However an additional 494,000 people watched the simulcast on BBC HD, the identical audience to the week before. This gave the story a total audience 8.42 million, making it the tenth most watched overall. On BBC Three the Sunday repeat had 0.82 million watching and was the sixteenth most watched programme on multi-channel for the week.

The AI or Appreciation Index or AI score is a measure of how much an audience enjoyed a programme. Although the score is slightly lower than recent episodes of Doctor Who, it is still one of the highest scores of the day. Doctor Who Confidential had an AI figure of 85. The Sunday repeat had an audience of 0.59 million watching. With the whole weeks ratings now available, Doctor Who currently is seventeenth for the week. This will almost certainly rise when the final figures are reported next week.

Paul Cornell's New Pulse Pilot - An Exciting New Horror Drama Posted: 18 Apr 2010 09:29 PM PDT Writer of some of the best Doctor Who stories in recent years and long time friend of Doctor Who: Podshock, Paul Cornell has written a pilot for a possible new series on BBC3, Pulse. The 60-minute pilot scheduled for this spring on BBC3 is a medical horror drama set in one of the UK's top teaching hospitals, St Timothy's. It is home of the country's most promising trainee doctors, but beneath its veneer of medical normality lies a secret network of dangerous experiments pushing back the boundaries of science with potentially horrifying consequences. It stars Claire Foy as Hannah Carter whose mother was a consultant at the hospital before she died suddenly a year prior. Taking a year off teetering on the edge with grief, she's back to resume her training. Hannah remains fragile, so when she starts glimpsing strange events in the hospital and unsettling behavior from her ex-boyfriend and star surgeon Nick played by Stephen Campbell Moore, she's unsure what to believe. Hannah puts her sanity on the line, ignoring the pleas around her to uncover the truth of the hospital.

Posted: 18 Apr 2010 05:44 PM PDT Here's a hysterical video from last Wednesday's night's special Doctor Who premiere screening event at the Village East Cinema in Manhattan. Fans turned out in large number, and BBCAmerica.com gives you an exclusive look at the event. It's a must-watch! Alternatively, watch this video at BBC America! Additionally, BBCAmerica.com has also posted amateur video of the full Q&A with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and lead writer/executive producer Steven Moffat at Wednesday night's Village East Cinema fan screening. Short of firing up the TARDIS and going back in-time to join us that night, it's the best way to celebrate the buzz and excitement surrounding the new series. (With thanks to Rory)
Posted: 18 Apr 2010 03:30 PM PDT Victory of the Daleks spoilers So another episode, another mysterious crack. From the far future and now into the past. This sighting, like in The Beast Below, was so obvious you could hardly miss it. At the end of Victory of the Daleks, The TARDIS dematerialises and there it was on the wall behind where it stood. So do the cracks only appear when the Doctor leaves or were they there all along? The way it was shown this time almost gave the impression that the Doctor, Amy or even the TARDIS could be the ones causing them. There was another more interesting story development this week. Why can't Amy remember the Daleks? Here's the dialogue from the episode.
And then at the end of the episode, The Doctor tells Amy just before the TARDIS dematerialises.
A possible theory is that Amy isn't actually from the present day earth, so the Dalek invasion in The Stolen Earth wouldn't have happened to her yet. This could be collaborated in The Eleventh Hour in the scene which shows Rory's badge as being issued in 1990. Now how can that be right? If the episode was set in present day, Rory would have been issued this pass when he was a toddler! So could Amy actually be from the early 1990's? There's one problem of course. The technology used in the episode (laptops, Blackberry etc) are too advanced for that time period. Unless, something 'timey wimey' is going on. Like, say, a crack in the universe perhaps causing unexpected technological advances… Interestingly Steven Moffat said it was a 'misprint' when quizzed in a recent video interview (around the 6 minute mark). Now usually we'd be prepared to take his word, but the whole thing is a little suspicious. You'd think that an 'error' that gets screen time like this would easily be picked up by the production team. And is Moffat really going to reveal what could be a huge piece of puzzle this early? No. He's a very clever man, and notice in the same interview how he never answers the actual question of what time Amy is from… Read more 'Cracked' speculation here |
