Posted: 03 May 2010 07:30 AM PDT Well, this one was signposted as soon as the rescheduling of The Vampires of Venice was announced, placing Doctor Who at its earliest start time for 30+ years – the Daily Mail are already doing a bad impersonation of Mary Whitehouse. Declaring that:
…the Daily Mail clearly haven't the faintest idea what they're talking about. Doctor Who was already scary for children, whether Daleks, Ice Warriors, Cybermen, the Master and his Tissue Compression Eliminator, half-man/half-Dalek Davros or even the Doctor being freeze-framed drowned at the end of The Deadly Assassin part 3. But no, noticing that there is little or no resistance to the length of Amy Pond's skirts, they're going for the Doctor Who jugular – scares. Given that Vampires of Venice has been rescheduled so that the following show – There's Something About Joseph Over The Rainbow or something – doesn't get shafted in the ratings by Britain's Got Talent. So – vampires in Doctor Who too early at 6pm?
That's right – the revolutionary new menace of vampires! It's almost as if they could have shot to pulp literary success much earlier – perhaps the 19th century – such is the whole romantic and classical concept of the immortal plasmovore… As far as I was aware – and correct me if I'm wrong – but one of the main reasons children watch Doctor Who is to be, well, scared. There's a General Election this week – it's not like it could possibly be a slow news day – so what exactly are the Daily Mail on about? Vampires are pretty much de rigeur these days on TV (and read this to see why Doctor Who has a special relationship with such creatures…) so could this be the beginning of an anti-Who campaign by a newspaper sniffing a BBC-cutting Conservative victory?

Posted: 03 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT The BBC have uploaded the Graham Norton reference to Nortongate to their YouTube site. The full programme, which features Karen Gillan as a guest, can be seen on BBC One Monday evening.
Posted: 03 May 2010 06:27 AM PDT New Doctor Who director Adam Smith – the man who helmed The Eleventh Hour and the recent two parter The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone - has recently been interviewed by Digital Spy. For a short interview, there is loads in it, from explanations on the type of camera and lens that could be used to acquire a "cinematic" quality and the length of time it takes to complete CGI to demonstrating Adam Smith's delegation skills:
The fact is, Smith has proved something of a revelation for Doctor Who fans – there's likely to be a good case for him to make a return in future series, although he makes clear that he isn't behind the cameras for any more episodes in 2010.

Posted: 03 May 2010 05:42 AM PDT An average audience of 6.9 million viewers tuned in for Flesh and Stone according to overnight figures, with Doctor Who securing 34.5% of the available audience, reports GallifreyNewsBase. Split across 6.53 million watching on BBC One, (the most watched programme of the evening on the network), and 0.34 million watching on BBC HD, final figures are likely to be higher once delayed viewing from iPlayer and Sky+ are factored in. Reviews of the episode – the conclusion of the storyline begun in The Time of Angels and a development of the series arc – have been overwhelmingly positive. SFX awarded the Steven Moffat script – his fourth so far – with 4 stars out of 5, although given some of the points in their review this seems a slightly high score. Time to start marking our of 10, perhaps? Still, they're not wrong about this:
If you're looking for a national mainstream press review, once again your only hope is The Guardian. however Dan Martin declared that Flesh and Stone is:
which leads us to wonder if he's quite alright. I mean, it was good, possibly even a classic, but better than Genesis…? Den of Geek's review of Flesh and Stone makes a particular point of the developed powers of the Weeping Angels no longer content with feeding off the time energy created by sending you back in time (as in Blink) – now they're really aggressive, desperate to feed on the energy from the Byzantium and the crack.
MaryAnn Johanson is focussed firmly on the Doctor and his various possible/potential relationships with the women in the episode – and she rightly underlines that the situation with River Song is less of a situation and more of a "what are you doing to us, Moffat?!"
Finally, ShadowLocked blogger Leo Porter has made the rather astonishing claim that Matt Smith is the best Doctor since Tom Baker. Based on 5 episodes, we really don't see how this decision can be determined so soon, however the rash declaration soon loses steam:
So, in fact nothing to do with the actor then, Leo?

Posted: 03 May 2010 02:27 AM PDT Fresh from BBC America, we've got some Doctor Who clips especially for our US-based readers to celebrate the approaching episode The Time of Angels, by Steven Moffat. Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat and star Matt Smith explain the treachery of the Weeping Angels, the Doctor's returning foes. Marking the return of both a modern classic villain and an enigmatic character, The Time of Angels stars Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy and Alex Kingston as River Song, first seen in 2008's Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. The Time of Angels airs this Saturday at 9/8c on BBC America. Meanwhile, if you're reading this in the USA, you can catch the Doctor Who Confidential that accompanied Victory of the Daleks online at BBC America.
