Mail Provokes Mediawatch Comment Posted: 05 May 2010 12:25 PM PDT The Daily Mail has provoked a comment on the new series from an organisation with a long track record of expressing concerns about the classic series, Mediawatch-UK. Mediawatch is the successor to the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association, the organisation founded by Mary Whitehouse in 1965. Whitehouse was extremely critical of Doctor Who during the period produced by Philip Hinchcliffe between 1975 and 1977. She made complaints about several of the serials during this era, particularly The Ark in Space, Genesis of the Daleks, The Brain of Morbius, The Seeds of Doom and The Deadly Assassin. The latest comment comes in a Daily Mail article which claims 'dozens' of fans are upset with the BBC, accusing the production team of trying to 'sex up' the programme to attract more adult viewers. The main focus of the complaint is the final scene in Flesh and Stone, a scene which the Daily Mail was convinced would worry viewers when it previewed the episode last Saturday. In the article, Vivienne Pattison, of Mediawatch UK, is quoted as saying "I have to say the scene was slightly out of place in a children's programme. I thought it sailed pretty close to the wind." The BBC is also quoted in the article, confirming that it had received 43 complaints about Saturdays episode. A spokesman said "Millions of Doctor Who fans watched and enjoyed last Saturday's episode, including the lighthearted and humorous scene in which Amy kissed the Doctor."

Amy’s proposition sparks more complaints Posted: 05 May 2010 08:49 AM PDT Amy Pond’s proposition at the end of Flesh and Stone has reportedly sparked yet more complaints. According to the Daily Mail today, 43 viewers have complained about the scene, in which the character attempted to become more than just your average companion. The newspaper claims that her suggestive remarks were one step too far, as Mediawatch UK’s Vivienne Pattison [...]
Posted: 05 May 2010 08:37 AM PDT Amy Pond's boyfriend Rory – actor Arthur Darvill – has been talking to Digital Spy recently about Doctor Who, vampires and ponytails! Giving away little about anything beyond The Vampires of Venice, Darvill – who once starred in a play with Matt Smith and Christian Slater – also refused to be drawn on whether he would be returning in 2011. Here's some of what he did say, starting with getting the part of Rory:
On the subject of how Rory ends up in the TARDIS:
On the type of companion Rory makes:
And as for the vampires:

Posted: 04 May 2010 11:15 PM PDT Wildly successful fantasy author Terry Pratchett has spoken out on the subject of Doctor Who in a recent guest blog on the SFX website, describing the show as "ludicrous". Promoting his "guest edit" of SFX #196, Pratchett – whose most recent Discworld book Unseen Academicals is hilarious – points out various failings of Doctor Who, particularly since its return in 2005.
This is just the tip of the iceberg on a superb critique of the series from 2005-2010 (some is still relevant, but clearly the piece was written before The Eleventh Hour aired) which covers issues such as Adipose, World War One, The Empty Child and the idea of moving the show to Sundays to account for all of the Messianic posturing. A great read – head over to SFX now!

Posted: 04 May 2010 10:48 PM PDT It seems that some sort of rabid insanity has taken hold of the United Kingdom – it might be down to the General Election, or it might a sign of things to come. Once again, Doctor Who has been the subject of complaints, this time from viewers unhappy with the ending of Flesh and Stone. Featuring an Amy Pond, who had been terribly close to a horrible death, trying to seduce the Doctor at around 7.05pm, the amusing scene – far more innocent than any dialogue found at a similar time on other channels – has been the subject of a complain by a massive 43 people. Oh. Is that all? Move along, nothing to see here, people. Still, the BBC have had to issue a response:
Is it me, or is all of this getting just a little bit silly? This is the fourth complaint to make the headlines since the series returned just 5 weeks ago. Could the more innocent complaints about Dalek redesigns be playing into the hands of a particularly nasty organisation?
Meanwhile, Vivienne Pattison of standards pressure group Mediawatch UK, said:
Long-term viewers of Doctor Who might be interested to know that Mediawatch UK is the pressure group formerly known as the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association. Nasty.

Posted: 04 May 2010 07:50 PM PDT The Song of Megaptera is the latest from Big Finish's series of Lost Stories from the cancelled 1985 series of Doctor Who. Previously known as "The Song of the Space Whale", the story is by Pat Mills, based on his original Fifth Doctor era pitch, with John Wagner. After failing to become the story that introduced Turlough, "The Song of the Space Whale" was later lined up for the same slot as Vengeance on Varos, but again the Mills-only script was dropped, only to be picked up 25 years later by Big Finish for their excellent series of lost adventures.
Starring Colin Baker as the Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri, The Song of Megaptera features John Benfield as Captain Greeg, Neville Watchurst as Stennar/Manus, John Banks as The Caller/Ship's Computer, Susan Brown as Chief Engineer/Chanel, Toby Longworth as Stafel/1st Security Guard and Alex Lowe as Axel/2nd Security Guard. Released on May 31st, you can find out more and pre-order The Song of Megaptera at www.bigfinish.com. |
