Posted: 08 May 2010 09:08 AM PDT Doctor Who takes a change of pace next week – a bizarre, dual world scenario which brings the time travellers into contact with the mysterious Dream Lord. Alongside Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy's fiance Rory (Arthur Darvill) is on hand in the TARDIS following a quick pickup at the beginning of Vampired of Venice…
Also starring Toby Jones as the Dream Lord, Amy's Choice seems on first glance to be a sort of cross between 2008's Turn Left and Forest of the Dead – written by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye, it is likely to be pretty fascinating, if not a little disturbing in places… First viewing of Amy's Choice is on BBC One next Saturday evening at 6.25pm, with a planned simulcast on the BBC HD channel, the BBC's High Definition channel which is available via Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Posted: 08 May 2010 08:30 AM PDT Sixth Doctor Colin Baker -the man in the TARDIS from 1984-1986 – appeared in Liverpool at Doctor Who at the Fab Cafe recently, and has been caught on film chatting about his figures. By "his figures" we're not talking tax deductible amounts – no, we're talking about Character Options figures, of the Sixth Doctor in his post-regenerative state at the end of The Caves of Androzani, the standard technicoloured dreamcoat and the handsome blue "birthday suit". Colin also goes on to describe how the figures are arranged… Colin appears on stage with comedian and SFX blogger John Cooper. (With thanks to Ian)

Posted: 08 May 2010 07:39 AM PDT Doctor Who fans are notorious hoarders, and moreso than other fans – the years of no TV series lead to a lot of fans splashing out on props and other high price paraphernalia. Following the announcement of a Doctor Who exhibition at the Judge's Lodgings museum in Lancaster, the man who has several items of interest exhibited, Peter Jewell, is opening a stall as part of the market featuring some of his unique collection.
Curiously, according to the Lancaster Guardian, the first issue of Doctor Who Weekly (now Doctor Who Magazine) is worth £20,000! This surely can't be right, we suspect, but it is a fascinating figure nevertheless. The stall is expected to close with the exhibition in October. (Note – since originally writing this piece, some comments have clarified that the collection of multiple copies Doctor Who Weekly 1-5 is worth £20,000 in total, rather than each!) Posted: 08 May 2010 05:22 AM PDT Doctor Who Magazine and Radio Times contributor Benjamin Cook tweeted about the upcoming Sarah Jane Adventures episode guest starring Matt Smith and Katy Manning this week. Katy Manning is of course the actress behind Jo Grant, companion of the Third Doctor and all-round good sort who left the Doctor in The Green Death to travel to the Amazon with Professor Cliff Jones, how she presumably later married. It was 1973 when she left the TARDIS, and short of a couple of Big Finish productions she has had little to do with Doctor Who since then. According to Cook:
Written by Russell T Davies – playing with someone else's toy for a change – the two-part adventure has started filming and will feature Matt Smith's first appearance as the Doctor outside of the show. It will also be the second time in consecutive series that the Doctor has encountered Sarah Jane Smith. The fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures is set to air on BBC TV later this year.

Posted: 08 May 2010 02:16 AM PDT Doctor Who scriptwriter Toby Whithouse has dismissed the Venice of 2010 as a shadow of its former self, and nothing like the romantic location featured in Vampires of Venice. After being asked to set the story somewhere romantic, Southend-born Toby – who also wrote 2006's School Reunion and is the creator of Being Human - chose Venice, although it seems he had no idea the Doctor Who production team would travel abroad to film location work.
As we've seen a glimpse of Trogir in the trailers for this weeks episode, it certainly seems to have the expected, classic Venice look – tune in at 6pm tonight to see the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) take on the Vampires of Venice! Wondering why Doctor Who is featuring vampires? See our article, The Vampire Situation, for information on the series' long association with the undead…
Posted: 08 May 2010 01:10 AM PDT Doctor Who semi-regular Arthur Darvill has revealed that there are no plans for a musical version of the time travelling adventure series. Interviewed by The Stage, Darvill – an accomplished musician and composer as well as an actor – reckoned suggestions of a musical episode or even stage show were wide of the mark (thank Rassilon!)
Sure, Doctor Who can be almost anything, as we've seen – but does it really have to become a piece of musical theatre? Wasn't the musical narration of 1966's The Gunfighter's enough? Darvill is interviewed in full in The Stage Podcast, which features him talking about working with Matt Smith again, and the challenge to an actor when learning scripts that are pretty much secret. Meanwhile you can Rory's second appearance in Doctor Who tonight at 6pm on BBC One!
Posted: 07 May 2010 11:13 PM PDT Having now watched the second part of the latest Doctor Who adventure, 'Flesh and Stone', I'm really not sure what to make of it. Don't get me wrong, as usual I loved the experience of watching it. The episode was exciting and visual and had some great moments, but the plot seemed to be for a different story from that of the first episode. Wheras the first took us on a fine journey of discovery, opening up vistas for us: there is one Angel on a spaceship, which then crashes; River Song wants the Doctor to help her out to destroy the Angel along with a band of Religous-themed soldiers (Bishop and the Clerics sounds like a pop group to me); Amy gets herself into a bit of bother with the Angel which has obviously seen The Ring too often and ends up with something in her eye ('There's something on your back!'); and the whole thing ends up with everyone trapped in a vast maze of the dead, surrounded on all sides by statues which are all angels, all slowly coming to life and heading after our trapped heroes. But then part two ... it's a sort of chase through the spaceship which has a rather neat forest in it. Angels chasing the Soldiers ... Amy starts to count down for no real reason - 'To scare her' says Angel Bob ... well that's useful. The Angels are regenerating by absorbing the power from the ship ... but then there's the crack from Amy's room there again, apparently unmaking everything which gets close ... Amy has to shut her eyes and spend the episode wandering the forest and trying to avoid the Angels which assume she can still see ... lots of nice padding, but no real progression. Then there's a pile of stuff about the crack, about an explosion in Amy's time which ripped reality open, River Song being under arrest by the Soldiers for killing someone - and the implication is that maybe she killed the Doctor in her past; the Doctor's future. Kind of interesting and thought provoking if true - River knows how the Doctor dies, and the Doctor knows how River dies ... and they're each living their lives in a reverse order of meeting each other. I was however disappointed at the Doctor losing his temper with River Song. Not a very Doctorly way to behave I felt. It was all very enjoyable visually. The sets were magnificent, and the forest beautiful in a Red Riding Hood fairy tale way. There were some great performances from all the cast - especially impressive was Father Octavian as the believer-soldier who gives up his life without angst and moralising about it - and the Angels were as creepy as ever, though not nearly as goosebump-inducing as the terrifying part-formed creatures in the earlier episode. I am wondering what the title has to do with the episode. 'Flesh and Stone' is a great title, and I wondered earlier if Amy was perhaps going to turn into an Angel, which would have been cool ... but no. Also, why didn't the Angels kill people the same way as before, by sending them into the past? The one that grabbed the Doctor didn't do that, nor did the one which caught Father Octavian. And while we're talking about the Angels, as there were so many of them, how could they move except in total darkness, as another Angel would always be looking at them? One solution out of the dilemma in the corridor near the start would have been for the soldiers to move all the angels into a circle so they were looking at each other ... but no-one onscreen thought of that. And as they all went into the crack at the end, does this mean that the Angels now no longer exist at all, in past, present and future? What does that mean for poor Sally Sparrow? I wasn't convinced by Amy wanting to get intimate with the Doctor at the very end. It was out of place for the episode, and indeed the series, and smacked too much of trying to be shocking perhaps for the sake of it. I had hoped we'd seen the end of the kitchen sink drama approach of previous years, and this element wasn't welcome by me. But there's obviously something going on ... the reason why Amy - indeed everyone - cannot remember recent Dalek and Cyberman invasions ... and what the significance of Amy's wedding day is. Overall the season is shaping up nicely, and tonight we have some Vampires to contend with ...
