Four out of eight stories from Big Finish's 2009 series will be broadcast: The Beast of Orlok by Barnaby Edwards – In nineteenth-century Germany, the Doctor and Lucie come face to face with the legendary Beast of Orlok. With Miriam Margolyes (Blackadder II), Samuel Barnett The Scapegoat by Pat Mills – Set in Nazi occupied France during WWII – Ah, la belle Lucie. She's got no idea what she's let herself in for. Heh. Should you feel faint, or nauseous – never fear. Tonight, we have a Doctor in the house. Featuring Samantha Bond (The Sarah Jane Adventures), Clifford Rose and Paul Rhys. The Cannibalists by Jonathan Morris – When the TARDIS brings the Doctor and Lucie to the Haven, it seems like the Assemblers' long wait might be over. Living beings! Doctor Who theme voted one of the most recognisable Posted: 11 May 2010 08:05 AM PDT The iconic Doctor Who theme tune has been named amongst the top 5 of the most recognisable theme tunes on British television! Composed by Ron Grainer in 1963, the signature music came third in the survey, which was conducted by the Performing Rights Society. Match of the Day came in at first place, while the infamous ‘doof-doofs’ of EastEnders finished [...] |
Posted: 11 May 2010 07:51 AM PDT Former Doctor Who companion and Torchwood star John Barrowman has described his pleasure at being cast in the US hit drama Desperate Housewives. Cast as series villain Patrick Logan (with what he calls "Bad Guy, Black Hair"), Barrowman explained to The Mirror:
While there may not be any positive moves with regard to a future series of Torchwood (if rumours are to be believed) it is good to see that Barrowman is finally getting the recognition he reserves in the USA, if not an outing for Jack Harkness. Desperate Housewives airs in the UK on Wednesdays at 10pm on Channel 4 and in the USA on Sundays at 9/8c on ABC. http://www.kasterborous.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/cast-johnbarrowman.jpg |

Posted: 11 May 2010 05:26 AM PDT The Doctor Who theme tune has been voted 3rd in a poll of most popular TV theme tunes for the Performing Right Society (PRS). While it might be jumped on by critics of the new series arrangement as an example of why it isn't good as previous versions, this of course ignores the deep place that Doctor Who has in British culture. 1. MoTD 2. EastEnders 3. Doctor Who 4. Coronation Street 5. Countdown Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS:
Composed by the legendary Ron Grainer and originally arranged by the visionary Delia Derbyshire, the Doctor Who theme tune has remained a constant throughout the series history, twisting, changing and regenerating like the lead character itself. Since 2005, the tune has been arranged by Murray Gold. Given the number of theme tunes out there – and we've all got our favourites – 3rd place isn't bad. Interestingly, all of the top 5 tunes are over 25 years old… a damning indictment of modern TV theme tunes. |

Jago and Litefoot - Season Two Confirmed! Posted: 11 May 2010 04:58 AM PDT With just a few weeks to go until the release of the first season of Jago and Litefoot, Big Finish can reveal that the irrepressible investigators of infernal incidents are already signed up for more! "We had such a fun time making the first series," says producer David Richardson, "and I'm really proud of it – I'm optimistic that people will be scared, excited and amused by these new audio adventures. There's a real buzz about it – and I'm delighted to say that as a result series two is already in a very advanced state of preparation." Season Two, which will also be released in a five-disc box set, will be available in January 2011 and is available for pre-order now at a special discounted rate from this link. "Obviously we don't want to say too much about it yet," says Richardson, "as people have yet to enjoy the first four stories. But I can say that we have the brilliant David Collings joining the regular cast as Gabriel Sanders, while our guest stars in series two will include Vernon Dobtcheff and Simon Williams." |

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:26 PM PDT The Doctor Who Theme has been voted the third most recognisable theme tune on British television. The Doctor Who theme was composed in 1963 by Ron Grainer and was one of the first electronic music signature tunes for television. It was originally realised by Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Since the 1960's there have been several versions of the theme with the latest, arranged by Murray Gold, accompanying the 2010 series. Posted: 10 May 2010 06:57 PM PDT Amy's Choice writer Simon Nye has chatted with Digital Spy this week about his Doctor Who episode, which the Men Behaving Badly writer describes as "a scary romp." There is certainly alot to be gained from the interview which in some ways is a little spoilery. Certainly with Toby Jones as the Dream Lord seemingly controlling events and the Doctor, Amy and Rory unable to work out where they are, the episode looks like quite a treat…
It seems on first glance to be quite a diversion from Men Behaving Badly or Reggie Perrin - and Nye is quick to play down his sci-fi credentials. Yet both of those comedies feature surreal moments that would seem more than a suitable grounding for such a fascinating episode. Visit Digital Spy to read the full interview – meanwhile, catch Amy's Choice, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, Arthur Darvill as Rory and Toby Jones as the Dream Lord on Saturday, 15th May at 6.25pm on BBC One. |

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:02 PM PDT As a response to the recent storm about the suitablility of Amy Pond trying to cop off with the Doctor and pretty vampires with fangs and (gasp) clothes on, WalesOnline's Carolyn Hitt has made a pertinent observation about the way Doctor Who is enjoyed as part of weekly family viewing. Asking the question "has Doctor Who ever really been suitable for kids?" Hitt eventually comes to a reasonable conclusion, via brief enquiries into Nortongate and observations into real life.
While the classic movie vampires might represent a dated view of women as both sexual objects and scary girls controlled by a malevolent, male force, there is little of this subtext in Vampires of Venice, where the vampires are controlled by a female, Contessa Calvierri (albeit for mating purposes). The full article is a good read that arrives at a sensible conlcusion – read it at WalesOnline. |
Vampires of Venice - AI and Sunday Ratings Posted: 09 May 2010 09:49 PM PDT The Vampires of Venice scored an Appreciation Index figure of 86. The AI or Appreciation Index or AI score is a measure of how much an audience enjoyed a programme. A score above 85 is considered excellent. With overnight ratings for the whole week now available, Doctor Who is currently 18th for the week. Sunday's BBC Three the Doctor Who repeat was watched by 0.60 million and was the 11th most watched programme on multi channel television. The Doctor Who Confidential cut down repeat had 0.26 million watching. |
