Doctor Who: Here Come The Monsters Posted: 15 May 2010 12:47 PM PDT The Scotsman is reporting that a new Doctor Who Stage Show will tour the UK later this year. The BBC Worldwide show, titled Doctor Who: Here Come The Monsters will be in a similar format to the the successful Walking with Dinosaurs Arena tour last year. The show will take place in a large staged area on the Arena floor and will feature special effects, and video scenes shot with Matt Smith. It will include stage battles between the Daleks and the Cybermen and be accompanied a live orchestra playing music by composer Murray Gold who said "The live element always adds something extra, but these will also be brand new arrangements for a new band of very talented musicians. It's very exciting." Nine venues are to be included on the tour including the Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow. The show has been developed in association with executive producer Steven Moffat, who said: "This is everything I ever wanted since I was 11. A live show, with all the coolest Doctor Who monsters, a proper story, and brand new screen material. More details should be available shortly and tickets are expected to go on sale in the next month.

Posted: 15 May 2010 12:00 PM PDT An incredible ending to the Weeping angels two-parter in Flesh and Stone, no? And there’s lots of little details to pick up on in terms of the overall series arc, which you can find out about in our latest TARDIS file. Feel free to discuss in the comments section, but remember, any discussion of episodes which have not aired in North America will be rewritten from history through the crack on Amy’s wall.

Amy’s Choice – Modern Classic? Posted: 15 May 2010 08:51 AM PDT Quirky, oddball, psychological – three great words that do no justice to an excellent episode of Doctor Who. Amy's Choice was a rarity – an episode that felt quite different to anything that had gone before, despite minor similarities with 1968's The Mind Robber and 1964's The Edge of Destruction. We'll have a full review up later this weekend – but I just want to reflect on an episode that personally took me by surprise. I was personally underwhelmed by Vampires of Venice, an obvious retread of many of the same concepts as 2006's School Reunion. On first glance, this shouldn't be a surprise, as both episodes were written by Toby Whithouse – yet he's the creator of the popular Being Human. There really isn't any excuse for a blatant reuse of an earlier script idea. In sharp contrast, Amy's Choice came from the pen of a man who hasn't worked on Doctor Who before, is best known for his long-running "New Lad" sitcom Men Behaving Badly (starring Martin Clunes, Neil Morrissey, Caroline Quentin, Leslie Ash and Harry Enfield at various stages of its long existence). As a fan of this show, I was heartened when I heard that Amy's Choice featured "dream sequences" – a couple of episodes of Men Behaving Badly feature short, hilarious dream sequences, a theme that Nye has of course developed in the remake of the Reggie Perrin story. However I had no idea that the latest episode of Doctor Who would be quite that good. It wasn't quite Blink or Human Nature – but it is a superb story, with excellent performances from the principal cast of Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and guest Toby Jones, and is certainly a highlight of this current series. We're halfway through the run now. While things haven't been as thrilling as the 2007 run (The Face of Boe! The Master! Blink! Human Nature!) – which long-running readers of this site will know we regard as the finest of all – there is still a feeling of something devastating waiting in the wings at the end. With no obvious crack or silence in the episode this week, it was also good to get a break from the series arc/threat…

Posted: 15 May 2010 08:16 AM PDT Doctor Who's success has seen the first episode of the current run become the most requested programme to date on BBC iPlayer, the broadcaster's revolutionary online catchup TV service The Eleventh Hour has been requested over 1.78 million times to date, making it the most requested broadcast, beating the previous record which was held by the first edition of Top Gear's most recent series last summer. Furthermore, the first four episodes of the current series of Doctor Who received 5.2 million views between them, making them the four most requested programmes in April. This is of course great news both for Doctor Who and the BBC's popular online viewing service, which allows both TV and radio to be enjoyed after the initial broadcast. The Eleventh Hour is available on iPlayer until 6:24pm Saturday 3rd July 2010. (Via GallifreyNewsBase)

Posted: 15 May 2010 05:44 AM PDT News from the Cannes film festival this week reveals that former Doctor Who star David Tennant is set to star in a new romantic comedy opposite Kelly McDonald in the film Decoy Bride, reports The Independent. It is seen as a great chance for Tennant to get some of the big screen success that he allegedly craves, and certainly the brief outline below sounds intriguing:
More information is available in The Scotsman, where it is reported Scots filmmakers Ecosse Films (Mrs Brown, Becoming Jane) are involved. The producer of Decoy Bride is Douglas Rae, while the script is by Neil Jaworski and comedy actress Sally Phillips. Of the script – to be directed by Sheree Folkson – Rae says:
This isn't Tennant's first movie, however. He's already appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in which he played Barty Crouch Jnr and a Death Eater, as well as 2009's World War II movie Glorious 39, not to mention the most recent St. Trinian's movie, The Legend of Fritton's Gold.
