Australian ratings for Amy's Choice

Posted: 30 May 2010 02:44 PM PDT

Doctor Who continues its excellent ratings in Australia. TV Tonight reports that Amy's Choice averaged 973,000 viewers in the five major capital cities, again despite stiff competition from the commercial networks and the Eurovision Song Contest final on SBS. This was the program's best overnight ratings since 1.033 million Australian viewers watched Matt Smith debut in The Eleventh Hour. Yet again it was the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's top-rating program of the day, rating higher than its popular Sunday 7pm news. The corresponding Confidential Cutdown also rated a strong 595,000 viewers in the five major capitals.

Killed in Action? (Spoiler)

Oh Rory. You soared and then you were gone. Wiped so cruelly from history after being gunned down by Restac and absorbed into the crack in time in Cold Blood last night.

Doctor Who spoiler - is Rory gone?Of course, if you're an ardent Doctor Who fan (or, indeed fan of any twisty fantasy show) you probably know that this is not the end.

Speculation has begun in earnest. World renowned news source the Daily Star has quoted an insider (newspeak for someone on the payroll) who tells fans to prepare for a 'surprise' return.

"It's a science fiction show which means anything can happen. And rest assured this isn't the last you'll see of Rory."

Unlike Amy, no-one has had time to forget Rory with word already spreading about the Gallifrey Base forums via Doctor Who Spoilers about Rory's possible role in The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillan on Junior MasterchefSFX has reported on Matt Smith and Karen Gillan trying the offerings of contestants from BBC's Junior Masterchef. The actors ate their specially prepared dishes while filming new scenes for what could either be The Sarah Jane Adventures or this year's Doctor Who Christmas special (definitely no prize if you can tell us which one). Matt and Karen shared a menu of:

For Matt:

* Medium-rare fillet steak with potato wedges with BĂ©arnaise sauce and a side salad
* Treacle sponge with custard

For Karen:

* Oriental crispy duck pancakes with a plum sauce
* Banoffi pie

Both enjoyed their meal, with Matt commenting:

"Really lovely meal… Hats off to it… If I was wearing a hat, I'd tip it."

(Watch the full episode here).

The SFX report also has a poke of light fun at the (at the time) latest Doctor Who episode, The Hungry Earth and comments on its lateral thinking item of the week which is an actual screwdriver in the shape of, that's right, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver!

Actual Sonic Screwdriver

Each tip is reversible with Phillips and Flat-head ends and when not in use can be stored in the base. The device also comes in a collectable acetate box.

Cold Blood Reviewed

Posted: 29 May 2010 09:30 PM PDT

Leslie Ash - not in Doctor Who: Cold BloodPhew! What a relief! I was getting myself into a right state there for a while. Not because it looked like the Silurians were about to start a deadly war on us apes. No, my serious case of the jitters came about because, unlike most people I know, I really didn't like The Hungry Earth, and I was concerned that Cold Blood would leave me, erm, cold. Thankfully though, bar a few reservations (which I'll save for later) it turned out to be a bit of a corker.

For starters, the Silurians (I know, I know, we can have a big debate about what to call them – but I'm way too lazy to keep on typing Homo Reptilia) are back on form. Despite the absence of a third eye, silly voices, and Leslie Ash style trout pout, these are clearly the same reptiles created by the late, great Malcolm Hulke. This story has the exceedingly beautiful lizards sneering at us humans, boasting of their technological superiority, and almost immediately forming factions comprising of 'kill the apes!' and 'learn to live with the apes!' supporters.

This is all classic stuff, and a suitably respectful nod to Hulke. Crucially, too, we are forced to ask who the real monsters of the piece are – just as the Doctor raged against the Brigadier and UNIT for bombing the Silurian base back in those halcyon days of capes, Bessie and Liz Shaw, so now we have the Doctor shouting "What did you do?" at the blundering ape that is Ambrose. Just where did she find that Tazer anyway? In a mining village populated by one small family? Maybe it was used to stun the Police and 'scabs' during the miners' strike? The point, of course, is for us to question the Doctor's faith in us. His exhortation to Nasreen and Amy to "be extraordinary" was well made, as it is the all too ordinary behaviour of a threatened human that prevents any real chance of compromise between the two races.

Leslie Ash - not in Doctor Who: Cold Blood

The Silurians' makeover has been a total success in my view. While I loved the Target novel Doctor Who and the Cave-Monsters, I do remember finding it a bit hard to get into the psyche of some bloke in a big old rubber suit in the televised version. That's the thing about Silurians – they're not evil, they're clever, civilised, and they have a right to be here. All of that is what makes them so fascinating, and now we've lost that rubber barrier. The make up and costumes are astonishingly well realised for these modern Silurians, and I wholeheartedly applaud all those involved for creating convincing reptilian humanoids whose emoting we can now actually see. Furthermore, we've been blessed in this story with some really top notch acting, with all the key Silurians giving plausible, and at times, moving performances. Just try not to be distracted by Kevin the teenager's dad trying to negotiate for the future of planet earth.

I'd like to end this review on a positive note, so I'll get my gripes out of the way. Why is the village so devoid of human life? Can you really conduct a hi-tech, groundbreaking (sorry, couldn't resist!) drilling operation with one bloke reading The Gruffalo? Where did all the surveillance tech and weapons come from in a deserted village? Chris Chibnall continues to have a flagrant disregard for credibility, matching the daft pub quiz security system, and essential buttons being located on the outside of a spaceship in 42.

Much worse though, he has now committed a cardinal sin. He has given all those people who bang on about the sonic screwdriver being a magic wand a whole pile of ammunition. Time is running out, the poison gas is going to be released, the drill is coming closer, and the 'kill the apes!" Silurians are closing in. Brilliant! Tension, excitement, danger. This is what Doctor Who is all about. And the Doctor whips out his sonic screwdriver and disarms a whole platoon of angry reptiles. Terrible. For all the world, it appears that Chibnall wrote himself into a corner, and just played it the easy way. I'm still in shock that Steven Moffat didn't tell him to go away and rewrite it. Sigh.

Still, this episode is not without considerable merits. Yet again, I find myself enchanted by Matt's portrayal of the Doctor. He deals with every situation with flamboyance, style and gravitas. From the cheeky "squeaky bum time!", to the heartbreaking scene of the Doctor pulling Amy away from the dying Rory, we know exactly where we are with this Doctor. Oh, poor Rory. I loved Rory, and he really hasn't been around for long enough. I doubt that he's going to make a Rose/Donna style comeback, but then, you never can tell. So, Arthur Darvill – you were fantastic, Rory may have been erased from time and memory, but your performance certainly hasn't.

iPlayer Gets Social

Posted: 29 May 2010 08:45 PM PDT

Imagine travelling forward from 1999 to 2010. It'd be a hell of an eye opener. Huge HD televisions with crystal clear images, mobile phones that go way beyond just texting and calling people, Internet connections that mean it doesn't take half an hour to load up a website and Doctor Who, back where it should be – BBC One on Saturday. But surely one of the best things would be finding BBC iPlayer. Not only can you watch television on your super fast internet connection, but you can watch it whenever you want! Two in the morning and you want to watch Flesh and Stone? Well there it is, waiting to be loaded up! Totally mind boggling and guaranteed to make any 1999ers feel right out of place.

Doctor Who - on the new social iPlayerThe BBC obviously feel that they haven't done enough to make these poor time travellers confused enough and so have upped the stakes. The corporation will soon be releasing "social television" for iPlayer. This means that you can log in on your Windows Live Messenger account through iPlayer (if you have one) and actually message people whilst your favourite show together even if you're miles apart!

You can recommend shows to your friends and even "Shout out" when something exciting happens (which let's face it-is every week in Doctor Who). Rory Cellan-Jones, the BBC technology correspondent, had this to say:

"This step is more significant than say 3DTV. On-demand broadcasts in the wider context of the broadcasting industry allow users to build our own television schedules. And with the sharing web, there is a prominent socialization around TV – sharing our likes and dislikes, and there's an infrastructure already in place to allow this to happen now.

"On-demand television won't replace ordinary broadcasts. But there will be a tipping point for the younger generation where on-demand becomes more popular, but there is no time limit on when this could be."

The ZDNet.com report also credits Doctor Who as one of iPlayer' most popular programmes on the network.

Don't worry, people from the past, the future's bright!
