| Eccleston On Why He Left Doctor Who Posted: 21 Jul 2011 10:25 AM PDT The reason why Christopher Eccleston only did a single series of Doctor Who has always been a mysterious one. However, for the first time since he left the role, Eccleston has gone into surprisingly frank detail about it. According to Bad Wilf, the following was his response when asked about it at an acting master class taking place at the Theatre Royal Haymarket this week. | ||

| OtaKing and the Missing Episodes! Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:07 AM PDT A user on website Deviant art, a website for people to upload their artistic offerings has put up a very interesting post regarding a new BBC job that they have just been employed to do… The user's name is MightyOtaking, some of you may know this moniker from a thirteen minute Doctor Who anime that appeared on YouTube or through some very special artwork. But all that has suddenly disappeared from the web. Gone, like it was never there. Almost like it slipped into a mysterious crack in time… Of course, the real reason for the work being taken away is that MightyOtaking has been contracted for some Doctor Who related animation projects! Is this part of the restoration project that includes the animated missing episodes of The Crusade? Nothing is confirmed but since Big Finish is also involved… This appeared as part of the announcement recently posted:
Notice the use of the word "projects", plural rather than singular. It looks like we may be getting to see the rest of the missing stories released on DVD finally, completed as much as they can be. Looks like we can see 2entertain's next business strategy after they finish releasing all the complete Doctor Who serials in 2013… Congratulations to Paul "OtaKing" Johnson for a much-deserved career move!

| Why Eccleston REALLY Quit Doctor Who Posted: 21 Jul 2011 07:10 AM PDT Our friends over at the Bad Wilf Podcast recently attended an acting master class at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, where Christopher Eccleston (The 9th Doctor) shed some light on the real reason behind his decision to quit. “I left Doctor Who because I could not get along with the senior people. I left because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye with them. I didn’t agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up, around the series. So I left, I felt, over a principle. “I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay was to eat a lot of shit. I’m not being funny about that. I didn’t want to do that and it comes to the art of it, in a way. I feel that if you run your career and– we are vulnerable as actors and we are constantly humiliating ourselves auditioning. But if you allow that to go on, on a grand scale you will lose whatever it is about you and it will be present in your work. “If you allow your desire to be successful and visible and financially secure – if you allow that to make you throw shades on your parents, on your upbringing, then you’re knackered. You’ve got to keep something back, for yourself, because it’ll be present in your work. A purity or an idealism is essential or you’ll become– you’ve got to have standards, no matter how hard work that is. So it makes it a hard road, really. “You know, it’s easy to find a job when you’ve got no morals, you’ve got nothing to be compromised, you can go, ‘Yeah, yeah. That doesn’t matter. That director can bully that prop man and I won’t say anything about it’. But then when that director comes to you and says ‘I think you should play it like this’ you’ve surely got to go ‘How can I respect you, when you behave like that?’ “So, that’s why I left. My face didn’t fit and I’m sure they were glad to see the back of me. The important thing is that I succeeded. It was a great part. I loved playing him. I loved connecting with that audience. Because I’ve always acted for adults and then suddenly you’re acting for children, who are far more tasteful; they will not be bullshitted. It’s either good, or it’s bad. They don’t schmooze at after-show parties, with cocktails.” [Source: Bad Wilf] | ||

| Harvest of Time - Classic Series Novel Confirmed For 2013 Posted: 21 Jul 2011 06:08 AM PDT BBC Books have been in touch with DWO to let us know about an exciting new Classic Series Book title for 2013, titled Harvest of Time. BBC Books is delighted to announce that Alastair Reynolds, the bestselling author of the Revelation Space series, will be writing a novel for the Doctor Who list, entitled Harvest of Time. Harvest of Time will feature the Third Doctor as played by Jon Pertwee and will be the first all-new adventure for a Past Doctor that BBC Books has published since the show’s return in 2005. A novel set on both 20th century Earth and far into the future, it will have the Doctor battling his arch-nemesis, The Master, to save the universe – and facing the ultimate moral crisis. BBC Books editorial director Albert DePetrillo commented, ‘We’ve been carefully planning our venture into Doctor Who’s past for a while now, first with our reissues of six of the Target novelisations, then our novelisation of Shada in 2012. The next step is all-original adventures with past Doctors, and we knew we needed to publish those in a special way. I’m absolutely delighted that Alastair can be part of that plan. He is simply one of the best science fiction writers around, and we’re thrilled to have him contributing to the Doctor Who list.’ Alastair Reynolds commented, ‘Doctor Who has been a big part of my life for forty years. To put things into perspective, when I was little I did not want to go round to another boy's house because he had Dalek wallpaper, a concept I found unspeakably terrifying. I am delighted and honored to have the chance to write a novel featuring not only one of my favorite Doctors, but the single greatest villain ever imagined: The Master.’ Alastair Reynolds is an award-winning author of science fiction, including the novels Revelation Space (shortlisted for the British Science Fiction and Arthur C Clarke awards), Chasm City (winner of the British Science Fiction Award for Best Novel), and House of Suns. He received a PhD in Astronomy from St Andrews in Scotland and worked as a scientist for the European Space Agency for twelve years before devoting himself to writing full time. He lives in Wales. + Harvest of Time will be published in 2013 as hardback, priced &ound;16.99. [Source: BBC Books] | ||
| The Adventure Games: The Gunpowder Plot Posted: 21 Jul 2011 06:06 AM PDT The Gunpowder Plot will be the most advanced of the Adventure Games so far. Gamers will be able to play as the Doctor, Amy and Rory, exploring the immersive environments of this historic period. The adventure will feature multi-linear gameplay, even more sophisticated puzzles, and a complex lighting system specifically designed to recreate the atmosphere of 17th Century London. And for the very first time, the introduction of portal technology will enable gamers to experience for themselves that the TARDIS really is bigger on the inside... Written by Phil Ford and produced by Gary Russell, the game is set in 1605 and will see the return of two old enemies of the Doctor's - and of course will feature the main protagonist of the title, Guy Fawkes. The game will also be accompanied by an online resource pack with downloadable assets to support History and Literature lessons in schools, via BBC Learning. This isn't the first time the Doctor has encountered this period - the First Doctor, Ian and Barbara became embroiled in the plot back in 1996, for the Virgin Missing Adventures series book The Plotters written by Gareth Roberts. | ||

It's the most ambitious Adventure Game to date and stars Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy and for the first time, Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams. This new, dazzlingly epic story gives you the chance to battle aliens in London, 1605. The executive producers are Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis, Anwen Aspden and Charles Cecil. The Gunpowder Plot will be the most advanced of the Adventure Games so far. To accompany the game, BBC Learning will be offering teachers an online resource pack containing unique, downloadable assets to support History and Literacy in the classroom. And in the adventure itself you'll be meeting not just the main figures from the plot, but everyday Londoners who lived through an exciting, dangerous and fascinating era. The Adventure Games have received over 2.6 million download requests since the launch of the first adventure, City of the Daleks, which SFX called 'the best Who game to date.' The series was a finalist at the Develop Awards and nominated at the Banff World Media Festival for Best Branded Entertainment. As always, the Adventure Game will be free in the UK and we'll be giving you more information soon. The Gunpowder Plot explodes in approximately three months time. | New Executive Producer Announced Posted: 21 Jul 2011 05:20 AM PDT The BBC Doctor Who website has confirmed details via an interview with Steven Moffat, of the show's new Executive Producer, Caroline Skinner, who replaces Piers Wenger: These are exciting times for fans of Doctor Who. We've recently had the very welcome announcement that 14 new episodes have been commissioned along with confirmation that Matt Smith will be onboard for them. Hurray! Now comes the news that a new executive producer has been appointed. We felt it was the perfect moment to catch up with lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, who revealed all about the new exec... What can you tell us about Doctor Who's new executive producer? Steven Moffat: The exec joining me on Doctor Who is Caroline Skinner - fresh from the wonderful Five Days, and still finishing up on a brand new show called The Fades (a fantasy horror series, written by Jack Thorne - I've seen episode 1, and it's BRILLIANT.) Somewhere between me laughing in a basement and choosing planets to invade, and Marcus Wilson raising armies, there has to be a Prime Minister actually running the whole thing. That's the job Piers Wenger and Beth Willis have been doing so wonderfully for the last few years. Now that Piers is off to movie land, that's the furnace Caroline will be walking into. How did you meet her? SM: It's a funny thing about this show: the people who work on it, get so attached and so passionate about it, they can't just leave - they have to make sure it's going to be okay after they're gone. Just as when Russell was leaving, he sounded me out about taking over, Piers had strong views on who should be his successor. And as soon as I met Caroline, I knew exactly why. It takes a particular kind of person to work on this show - you have to be prepared to work every day of the week, laugh in the face of holidays, and above all, understand that Doctor Who is completely impossible to make and then make it anyway. I could see all that in Caroline - so off we go! When will she actually start on the show? SM: This has been in the works for a very long while, and a smooth succession is vital on this show. Caroline starts work almost immediately on the Christmas Special, alongside Piers Wenger. They've worked together before so this will be the smoothest hand-over we've done - and since Piers is determined to go out with a bang, that means Caroline will arrive with one. Just as it should be! What are you working on at the moment? Is there anything you can tell us about the Christmas Special? SM: I think I spent the entire budget on the first page. A baptism of fire for Caroline Skinner. Literally fire. And aliens! [Source: BBC Doctor Who website]

| New Executive Producer Announced Posted: 21 Jul 2011 04:50 AM PDT The BBC has announced that Caroline Skinner will join Steven Moffat as Executive Producer on Doctor Who.
