New Doctor Who Trailer!

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 08:46 AM PDT

What's 40 seconds long, takes place in 1930's Berlin, a haunted hotel where the geography is constantly switching, a block of flats on Earth and a bizarre world where blacken trees resemble Bronchus – features Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler and dinosaurs and is going to leave you absolutely breathless?

This:

The trailer – now available to view continuously on the BBC site – differs from the San Diego Comic Con version in both length and more importantly in juicy flashes of just what might be coming our way in just a few weeks time.

Stand out moments include a spectacular colonised pyramid, Amy swinging a Katana through the circuit boards of a hapless robot, a pterodactyl and of course a Stetson (which are comparable on the cool-o-meter to Bow Ties but not quite at Fez level.)

BBC America Doctor Who Specials

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 03:10 AM PDT

August 27th. That's going to be one hell of a day, as Doctor Who returns to our screens to not only wrap up the "revelation of River Song" two parter but also to continue his mad adventures across all of time and space. The TARDIS crew are going to be facing Hitler, mad hotels, Cybermen, weeping Angels and maybe the Daleks as well…

To honour the return of the good Doctor and his crew, BBC America will air three special episodes looking at different aspects of Doctor Who!

Best of the Doctor (you can work out what that one's about) will be shown two Saturdays (August 13th) before Let's Kill Hitler and will be shown at 9pm. Best of the Monsters will look at the child of Gallifrey's arch rivals that he has encountered in the many Universes that he's been to and will air a week after Best of the Doctor in the same timeslot. The final special, Best of the Companions, will be shown at 9pm on August 27th, straight after Let's Kill Hitler.

Whether these special documentaries will be shown in the UK is yet to be confirmed.

What's interesting however, is the picture that's supplied with the link. Not only do we have a Silent, Rory, Amy, River and the impossible Astronaut but there is also a mysterious and ominous looking pyramid that's bound to play a big part in the series six finale. The Doctor is also sporting a longer looking jacket making him look a little bit like his predecessor.

It's going to look great for all those "serious, slow motion walks towards the camera" moments…

Sylvester McCoy? He's My Doctor!

Posted: 05 Aug 2011 01:49 AM PDT

There's a train of thought that Sylvester McCoy was only the Doctor from 1987 til 1989 and that despite appearing briefly in 1996 to regenerate into Paul McGann can't claim to have been the Doctor in the interim period.

It's a compelling argument. It's an argument with plenty of evidence to support and many people who passionately believe in it. There's just one slight flaw in it, as far as I'm concerned, and that is it that it's wrong.

I know the arguments I'm going to hear:

"He stopped appearing regularly in 1989."

"But there was no new Who until 1996." (No-one ever really, seriously, includes Dimension in Time as canon.)

"The books don't count! McCoy didn't star in them."

"The BBC wasn't involved in Who again until the TV Movie."

I know them all. I've heard them all. That doesn't stop them being wrong.

I can't argue that the BBC stopped making Doctor Who for the telly in 1989. I may well have had difficulty accepting it at the time, but the fact itself isn't up for debate.

It only took 18 months for the first of the New Adventures to appear after the Doctor and Ace went looking for a cup of tea. The New Adventures picked up almost exactly where Survival left off and carried the tone of Series 26 for many fans until 1997 and the publication of Lungbarrow. Many, now prominent, Who fans kept the Doctor and the Tardis adventuring during most of the 90s. Amongst them were Kate Orman, Gary Russell, Justin Richards and Lance Parkin. Some of the writers from the series carried their arcs for the Doctor straight into the books; Andrew Cartmel, Ben Aaronovitch, Marc Platt and even Terrence Dicks himself. Other authors have even gone onto write for the 2005+ series; Paul Cornell, Mark Gatiss and Gareth Roberts. Oh and Russell T Davies.

With Whovians of that kind of calibre it's hard to argue that the Seventh Doctor wasn't looked after well during his book run. Except, we've missed a name from those lists. A name whose absence would have made for a much harder job for all concerned.

Percy James Patrick Kent-Smith.

We know him as Sylvester McCoy and to say he didn't star as the Doctor from 91-96 is to completely underestimate the mastery of his performance as the Doctor.

"This is the Doctor; President Elect of the High Council of Time Lords, Keeper of the Legacy of Rassilon, Protector of Gallifrey, Defender of the Laws of Time."

Regardless of what you thought of the episodes from Series 24 there's no denying that McCoy brought a much darker edge to the Doctor to Series 25 and especially to Series 26 and his portrayal of the Doctor as "far more than just another Time Lord" is what set the New Adventures apart from the Targets, the Missing/Past Adventures and probably even the Eighth Doctor Adventures. Incidentally he remains the only version of the Doctor to appear in each of those lines.

So, I can't accept that he didn't star as the Doctor from 1990 until 1996. The only problem being that the New Adventures were released by Virgin Books rather than by the BBC. A lot of the McCoy detractors see this as their key argument; that the BBC itself didn't produce new Who material until the TV Movie.

Except they did. You see Doctor Who Magazine never stopped rolling off the presses. An official BBC product, it held Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor from issue 130 through to 242 and as such used his interpretation of the Doctor in their (officially sanctioned) comic strip.

So, as far as I'm concerned the Doctor was played by Sylvester McCoy between 1987 and 1996.
And he's still My Doctor.

Smith Loves Hitler!

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 08:47 PM PDT

Matt Smith has told On the Box that upcoming Third Reich-a-thon Let's Kill Hitler is his favourite episode so far- leading to a pay-off that the Eleventh Doctor promises will be cooler than bow ties.

For anyone disappointed by the abrupt end to the first part of season six; fear not- Smith believes they'll be no-one disappointed when all is revelled:

"We've still got to understand just what happened to the Doctor in episode one. Steven Moffat has always delivered the payoff to all these revelations, in a way that is exactly what you would want it to be. It doesn't disappoint."

Of course the biggest development outside of the identity of that impossible astronaut is what is being organised for Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary in 2013 – and Smith has some ideas:

"How amazing would it be to see Tom Baker? Can you imagine just seeing him back in the scarf, man? That would be amazing.

Paul McGann is a great actor, man, and a great Doctor. I say bring back Chris Eccleston and Dave Tennant, too! How many Doctors can we get into one story? Imagine if there were five or six of us in one ep and we could all just look at each other and judge each other."

"The Six Doctors", anyone?

Moffat Teases 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Posted: 04 Aug 2011 07:47 PM PDT

Its been an uncertain few months for Doctor Who but the one uniting agent has been the 50th Anniversary celebrations. So with no amount of bluster Steven Moffat, tentatively told TV Line, the preliminary ideas will be huge!

That's right! No false modesty, no compromises! In Moffat we trust!

"It won't be just one thing…. We'll be doing lots of stuff. The plans are quite extensive, and changing all the time. Oh my God, we will hit that year very, very hard indeed."

Before you say: "yeah, nice dream" so far BBC executives are 'fully committed' to Moffat's party plans:

"There's lot of decisions we're making that are about making all that possible. It'll be amazing."

The question on every Who fans mind is will we see the Doctor meet his former incarnations and so far The Grand Moff hasn't dismissed the idea out of hand:

"Possibly…. It's so far in the future, it's only a set of notions,"

Ah, the big geek wants it too!

How would you like to see Doctor Who celebrate its 50th Anniversary?
