Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:40 AM PDT Might Toby Whithouse or Paul Cornell be writing for Doctor Who again in the near future? That's certainly the feeling SFX are giving after a recent San Diego Comic Con session! As part of SFX's "British Invasion" panel, Whithouse was asked if he or fellow panelist Paul Cornell might write again for Doctor Who, to which the Being Human creator replied:
Whithouse has already contributed 2010's Vampires of Venice in addition to the huge responsibility of 2006's School Reunion – meanwhile Paul Cornell was already well regarded in Doctor Who fandom as a novelist before 2005's Father's Day and 2007's modern classic Human Nature. The feeling from SFX's website is that Miéville has successfully made the necessary deduction – but of course at this stage, it is merely speculation…
Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:17 AM PDT It's always tempting to moan when you're snowed under with work. But then I remind myself of several things. I'm doing a job that I love unreservedly. So, Briggs, stop whining about the fact that you were directing Colin Baker for six days when you were behind on your writing tasks! First off, it was a joy to spend that time with Colin and the great guest casts we got (no spoilers!) and our lovely studio man, Toby Robinson. And secondly, those writing tasks aren't that far behind. And anyway, they're not a chore! They're Doctor Blinkin' Who, after all! It's my favourite thing. And it's when I remember that, that I suddenly have a flurry of brain activity that results in script progress... when I remember that my 'job' is to think up new and exciting ways for the Doctor to have adventures and defeat his foes. That's not a chore, it's a privilege. And then I remember how totally understanding my wife is about it (she's one in a million) and how lucky I am to have such a great little boy for a son. Okay, okay, no need to reach for the sick bucket! This is just my lucky life. It wasn't always this way, so I've decided to enjoy it while I can. And then, to top it all, I find out that Frazer Hines has been secretly suffering with cancer for years and that he's finally beaten it. I can't tell you how happy I am for him. I can have a go, though... I'm incredibly happy. I felt elated when I read that news. And I wrote and told him so. That kind of suffering really puts any silly moans about workload into perspective, doesn't it? So even though this isn't January 1st, I just wanted to make a public statement that there will be no more moaning from me about my 'job'. All I have to do is remember exactly what my job is and how joyous I really find it. So there. And by the way, if you really want to see me enjoying myself, come to the Theatre Royal Nottingham in a couple of weeks' time and see me playing Inspector Pratt in 'Murdered To Death', a comedy murder thriller. Which reminds me, alongside writing a story for the Seventh Doctor, some scripts for the Fourth Doctor, a series for Charley Pollard and a whole new Doctor Who series for... (ah, that would be telling), I've got some lines to learn! So, I'll be back in the office in three weeks' time. And then there'll be another podcast to do. I'm rather looking forward to that. Good Lorrrrrrrd!

Geronimerica! And Everywhere Else! Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:00 AM PDT Fantastic news for international Whovians – Doctor Who: The Adventure Games is now available to everyone who isn't on the British Isles! Head over to IGN's Direct2Drive website and you'll find that the price of the bundle – which includes both City of the Daleks and Blood of the Cybermen, has been slashed, at least temporarily, from the Joystiq-reported $4.95 (£3.24, for the curious British) to a mere $3.70 (£2.42)! At $1.85 (£1.21) per game (though they are not sold separately), we're looking at a pretty good deal here! While they're not free, for those of us who don't pay the ultimately-more-expensive license fee, the pair's listing of less than two dollars an episode is not bad at all! One possible catch might be the price of future installments. The Direct2Drive listing of the bundle essentially suggests that City of the Daleks comes free with every purchase of the package of two, meaning you'd just be paying for Blood of the Cybermen. Bump the price back up to $4.95, and assume the 3rd and 4th titles will be released individually, and we're looking at a potential $10 total cost of the rest of the series. It's still not bad, when you consider the price of other game series with an episodic format. The long-running franchise Sam and Max, for example, goes for $9 per episode on Steam (a service that the the makers of The Adventure Games should seriously consider if they want to further-expand their audience and collect more cash). The other, less speculative catch applies to the Mac users who aren't in the UK; specifically, if you fit that category, you can't play it. This could lead to a somewhat disgruntled contributor named Patrick Riley annoyed with the fact that he is a foreign Apple-thumper. If you're like me, hold your questions – Joystiq is attempting to contact the staff of Direct2Drive with inquiries about the Mac Adventure Games and we're doing the same. I think it's time to play the space-watching game. But enough of all the gloom! If you're not in Britain and are a PC user, it's time to celebrate with a few jolly rounds of sans-violence Cyber-smashing and Dalekstermination! Get your games here! If you're still undecided as to whether you'd like to spend your money on these, have a look at the Kasterborous reviews of City of the Daleks and Blood of the Cybermen.

But don't fret, just like The Big Bang, this little story also has a happy ending:

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:15 AM PDT As part of the build up to the new series of Sherlock feature-length adventures, the BBC News website has spoken to Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat, who is also behind the re-imagined adventures of Baker Street's finest. It's an interesting read, explaining in part why Moffat and Mark Gatiss (also a Doctor Who writer) decided to develop this particular project. The casting evidently has a lot to do with it, which brings us neatly to Martin Freeman, who was apparently on the Doctor Who shortlist back in 2008, and the star of Sherlock, the ridiculously named Benedict Cumberbatch. Asked if Cumberbatch would be suitable for the lead role in Doctor Who, Moffat was quick to dispel any rumours.
Now wouldn't that be interesting? (Well spotted Mez!)

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 08:25 PM PDT Flee the Beaches! 'Bad Wolf Bay' has been invaded by an army of Moon Jellyfish! Dozens of the tentacled menace's have washed up on Newton Beach, near Porthcawl, Bridgend, the location used many times by the Doctor Who production teams. Between April and September Moon Jellyfish can usually be seen in estuaries and bays where they congregate to breed. The stingers were discovered by James Palmer who was walking his dog on the beach. Shortly before being consumed and replaced by a pod person he said;
Bridgend Council have warned members of the public not to touch the Jellyfish with their bare hands and to be wary of exposed skin near the creatures. A spokesman said:
The stretch of coastline from Porthcawl to Southerndown has been used as both Bad Wolf Bay in Doomsday and Journeys End and as the Weeping Angels home-world Alfava Metraxis in Time of Angels and Flesh and Stone. Here are five interesting facts about Moon Jellyfish! * Moon Jellyfish are part of a group of more than ten morphologically near identical Jellyfish species in the genus Aurelia. * Adult Moon Jellyfish are easily recognisable by the four horseshoe-shaped reproductive organs which are visible through the top of the bell. * They use their tentacles to paralyse prey; they are only slightly venomous to humans, usually causing mild pain and a burning sensation. Although they often cause alarm to holidaymakers, they are quite harmless as their sting cannot penetrate human skin. * Aurelia swim by pulsations of the bell-shaped upper part of the animal. Swimming mostly functions to keep the animal near the surface of the water rather than progresion through the water. They swim horizontally allowing their tentacles to be spread over the largest possible area, in order to better catch food. * The Moon Jellyfish is carnivorous and feeds on Zooplankton. Posted: 22 Jul 2010 07:32 PM PDT The Sun has reported that a Doctor Who themed Simpsons episode is being hoped for by fans of Doctor Who and some devotees have even gone as far as drawing some fantastic pictures of what the results could look like if the Doctor, Amy and some old enemies got "Springfield-ised". The drawings emerged at the recent Comic-con held in San Diego and included drawings of a weeping angel and a Dalek. Sources at the BBC remarked that they were "impressed" by the images but have no plans as yet to cross the two worlds together. One insider remarked:
This coincides with a report called "Homer Who?" that Kasterborous' own Andrew Reynolds wrote last week about the emergence of these drawings. So what are your thoughts people? Too soon to be making light of our favourite show or just the publicity boost it needs stateside? |
