Art For Hearts: Alister Pearson Posted: 24 Jul 2010 07:30 AM PDT This weekend is for David Tennant fans when it comes to the Art for Hearts charity auction! Notable Who artist Alister Pearson painted this one, and it can be yours for any bid higher than £20.99 at the time of writing! Art for Hearts organiser Ian Stacey said on his blog:
The first of these prints is up for sale this week. If you'd like to make a bid, this page at eBay is a good place to do so. You have until the end of Sunday, 25th July, so now's the time to not hesitate if you have any inclination towards this painting! As you can read here in our introduction, Art for Hearts is an auction of Doctor-Who-related creations that sends all its proceeds to researching organ transplants. Last week's piece was a Colin-Baker-autographed caricature of the Sixth Doctor designed by Stacey himself, which sold for £23.00.
Posted: 24 Jul 2010 06:38 AM PDT Speaking to SFX recently, former Doctor Who boss and Torchwood creator, Executive Producer and lead writer Russell T Davies has revealed that the next series will be "very dark" In a huge interview on the SFX website, Davies revealed little about the plot:
However Russell, who has been living in LA since the middle of 2009, compared the tone of the new episodes to that of Torchwood: Children of Earth.
There's also an interesting moment in which RTD reveals that he's a bit of a PR bulls***ter…
Who can you trust these days? Head on over to the SFX website for more of this interview, or check back over the next day or so as we pull more interesting quotes out… http://www.kasterborous.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/writers-rtd.jpg

Posted: 24 Jul 2010 12:57 AM PDT If you've ever manically tried to write your own Doctor Who script, spare a thought for poor old Nicky Wire of once-fashionable Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers who has been playing with a few ideas of his own recently. Whether there is some form of Motorcycle Emptiness at the root of his attempts, or he's gone From Despair To Where, it really is hard to fathom. But let's face it, playing around with Doctor Who is hardly a Design For Life for most of us, is it?
Sounds familiar. Like Vincent and the Doctor, for instance… For the Love of Richard Nixon – If You Tolerate This, Your Children Will Be Next.

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 10:57 PM PDT The first Doctor Who Prom of 2010 took place today, Saturday, hosted by Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, who record the soundtrack for the series, presented a selection of intergalactic music, including Murray Gold's music from the TV show, plus a selection of classical favourites including Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, Mars from Holst's The Planets and Orff's Carmina Burnana. Before the concert, Matt Smith said of the Doctor Who Prom: Utterly nerve-wracking... I think that Murray Gold is incredible, totally incredibly – a genius – and to hear all that in the Royal Albert Hall will just be one of the most soaring experiences. The concert programme can be viewed on the Proms website, providing full details of the concert, the performers' biographies and an interview with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The programme is now available for seven days on the BBC iPlayer. Doctor Who Prom - Part One
Interval Twenty Minutes - Dance of the Daleks How do you make a sink-plunger seem scary? Matthew Sweet, who spent the Saturday tea-times of his youth peering at the television from behind the sofa, time-travels through Doctor Who's 47-year history to investigate the weird and wonderful soundworld of its incidental music. He talks with some of the composers who have contributed, in very different musical styles, to the enduring success of the programme over the decades. Doctor Who Prom - Part Two

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:39 PM PDT Exec producer Nick Briggs will be away from the Big Finish office (but never out of touch - with email, you're never alone!) and in Nottingham for the next three weeks. Nick will be working for the Classic Thriller Season at the Theatre Royal Nottingham. He is directing the first play, Murder With Love (by Francis Durbridge) and starring in the second play, Murdered To Death, playing the aptly named Inspector Pratt. Big Finish studio genius, sound designer and composer Toby Robinson has composed the music for both these productions, and the casts feature other actors you'll recognize from BF cast lists down the ages. In no particular order, Sam Clemens (Blue Forgotten Planet, Holmes and the Ripper), Adrian Lloyd-James (Dalek Empire), Jo Castleton (Brotherhood of the Daleks, The Marian Conspiracy), Karen Henson (Dalek War, The Apocalypse Element) and Patric Kearns (Curse of the Daleks). So, autograph hunters, head for that stage door now! 'The plays are done in the old tradition of weekly rep,' says Nick. 'And this season has been going for twenty-two years now, under the stewardship of the indomitable Colin McIntyre. The local audience has been so loyal to us over the years; loving the potential for cock-ups with such a short rehearsal period as much as they love the twists and turns of the thrillers. 'I've played Sherlock Holmes there for the past two years, but this year it's a complete change,' Briggs notes. 'Far from being the most brilliant detective in history... I'm playing a man who is completely without a clue. In fact, he's such an idiot, he actually manages to shoot a policeman when reconstructing a murder. He's kind of an English version of Inspector Clouseau.' Murder With Love runs from Monday 2nd until Saturday 7th August. Murdered To Death runs from Monday 9th until Saturday 14th August. You can find more details of the Classic Thriller Season, with booking information at http://www.royalcentre-nottingham.co.uk

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:56 PM PDT Doctor Who has conquered the BBC's iPlayer for a third consecutive month. June's figures show that the final four episodes of the season dominated the listings despite a live and catch-up TV service boost from the 2010 World Cup. Top of the list was The Pandorica Opens with 1.3 million requests followed by The Lodger, Vincent and the Doctor and The Big Bang all with over a million requests. The highest non-Who programme was skidding great bloke-a-thon Top Gear with 0.88 million requests. During June, Doctor Who had 6.35 million requests in total, shared between 13 episodes, just behind grim-geez-a-thon EastEnders which had 7 million requests for one of the 22 episodes available. Figures for the year so far give Doctor Who the top nine places in the download chart with The Eleventh Hour topping the list with a record-breaking 2.16 million requests. Top iPlayer requests January – June 2010
2 – Doctor Who 2 The Beast Below – 1.63m 3 – Doctor Who 4 The Time of Angels – 1.52m 4 – Doctor Who 7 Amy's Choice – 1.51m 5 – Doctor Who 3 Victory of the Daleks – 1.46m 6 – Doctor Who 5 Flesh and Stone – 1.40m 7 – Doctor Who 12 The Pandorica Opens – 1.33m 8 – Doctor Who 6 The Vampires of Venice – 1.32m 9 – Doctor Who 11 The Lodger – 1.29m 10 – Top Gear Series 14 Episode 7 – 1.26m 11 – Doctor Who 8 The Hungry Earth – 1.22m 12 – Outnumbered Series 3 Episode 1 – 1.16m 13 – Doctor Who 10 Vincent and the Doctor – 1.13m 14 – Doctor Who 9 Cold Blood – 1.13m 15 – EastEnders Live 19 Feb – 1.13m 16 – Doctor Who 13 The Big Bang – 1.11m 17 – Outnumbered Series 3 Episode 2 – 1.03m 18 – Outnumbered Series 3 Episode 3 – 1.00m 19 – Mock the Week Series 8 Episode 5 – 0.95m 20 – Doctor Who The End of Time Part 2 – 0.94m The higher standing for earlier episodes is because they have been available from transmission date until July. The later episodes should receive a boost when July's figures are announced. According to Worldtvpc, iPlayer received 86 million requests for TV programming across all platforms including PC, Mobile, Consoles and requests from Virgin Media during June. The overall figures where down when compared with the previous month but up on last June's anaylsis. Demand for the World Cup resulted in a 4% increase in Live viewing and a growth in the number of people using the service for TV at roughly the same time as normal TV viewing, although there was more daytime and late-peak time use. Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:35 PM PDT Looking for a way to personalize your web browser with a little Doctor Who flair? Try Personas! If you're a Firefox user, you can use the free Personas add-on to give all your browser windows a unique Whovian look! There are user-made themes of the Doctors, the companions, the TARDIS, Daleks, the sonic screwdriver, the Seal of Rassilon – you name it! There's even a Persona based on Tom Baker's scarf! It's not limited to Doctor Who, of course. There are Personas of just about everything the human race has ever thought of, ranging from beautiful sunsets to action movies to St. Patrick's Day! Should you prefer to stick with the Whoniverse, but want something other than the classic or revived series, you can always try out selections from Torchwood. If you don't have Firefox, you can download it here, and then get the Personas add-on here. If you're not sure where to start, here's the search queries from Doctor Who and Torchwood, ready for you to try out! Or, if none of the options are your fez of tea, and you happen to be a bit computer-savvy, you can always make your own! My personal favourite has always been this set of TARDIS roundels. The combination of that and my Richard Brookes screensaver and desktop theme make me feel like more of a geek than ever I've got my very own time-and-space machine! And honestly, who doesn't drink their tea from a fez these days? |
