Derek Pollitt 1927-2010

Posted: 25 Jul 2010 12:19 PM PDT

Doctor Who: Derek PollittThe actor Derek Pollitt has died at the age of 83.

Derek Pollitt had three roles in Doctor Who. In 1968 he played Driver Evans in the Second Doctor story The Web of Fear. Evans was part of Colonel Lethbridge Stewart's team, and the only survivor, other than the Colonel himself, from a fight with the Yeti. Evans always sang when scared. Pollitt returned to the series in 1970 playing Private Wright, a UNIT officer, in the third Doctor's second story Doctor Who and the Silurians. His final role in the series was not broadcast as he played A. St. John D. Caldera, a neurologist whose mind was stolen, in the cancelled story Shada.

Pollitt had a long association with Llandudno in Wales, where he and his then wife Pamela Rayner ran the Galleon Theatre Company for many years staging plays at the Grand Theatre in the in the 1960s. A keen sportsman, he played a couple of times in the 1960s for the Llandudno Second X1 cricket team and at the age of 64 he did a sponsored walk from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise money for a London hospital. He died in hospital in Surrey on July 11.

No Clues on Torchwood Writers

Posted: 25 Jul 2010 08:53 AM PDT

As part of his mammoth spoiler free Torchwood Series 4 pre-production chat to SFX, Russell T Davies has been talking about how the show has developed since he moved out to the USA in summer 2009.

TorchwoodThanks to the success of Children of Earth, it seems that Russell was able to begin planning the new series, despite being based in the USA and likely being mindful of how the production setup would be quite different to the Cardiff-based productions.

"I'd already moved out here [to LA] and it'd sort of been half in development, and then once those viewing figures came in it went into proper development," he revealed.

As you may know, Torchwood series 4 is a co-production by BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and US network Starz. Popular American script writers are apparently being lined up, with Davies currently unsure as to which episodes he'll be writing thanks to the "writers' room" arrangement.

"That's still [to be confirmed], to be honest. I'd love to write more, but we've got a lot of interest from other writers, and I'm happy showrunning the whole thing, so… depends how it pans out, really! Plenty of time to decide."

As ever, John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be returning as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper in 2011 for Torchwood Series 4, along with a new cast.

RTD on Writers’ Rooms

Posted: 25 Jul 2010 04:35 AM PDT

The writers room; a hodge-podge of college graduates, seasoned veterans and tired-eyed assistants who've clambered there way in the door after submitting spec script after spec script after spec script. In the USA, this system has produced some of the greatest (and some awful) television.

In the UK, this system has produced My Family.

Torchwood creator Russell T DaviesTorchwood Over-fiend Russell T. Davies, whose creation is being redressed in international dress for its fourth season believes whatever the system, its still going to need writers pounding keyboards and swallowing every hour available whole with work.

"Well, it's all writers sitting at a keyboard in the end. When everyone talks about the British system and the American system,  no-one ever factors in the evening soap operas that we have in Britain, which are run in exactly that way, with a writers' room and a commissioning process. We've been doing it since 1960, so it's really nothing new."

Davies, whose currently working with a staff of writers on the new series believes it simply comes down to pounds and pence as to why the system isn't more widely used.

"It's just we can't normally afford to do it in Britain, whereas here because they're in constant production, there's constant money paying for that system to keep people permanently on board. We've some great names coming along -  though I can't say them yet – so it's very exciting."

So far Davies is only confirmed to write the first episode of a ten-part serial.  The writers rumour mill began churning recently when Davies was photographed with Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me creator Bryan Fuller posing with a Dalek.

Torchwood, a co-production between BBC Cymru, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network Starz  is scheduled to air simultaneously in the UK and US in Summer 2011, and star John Barrowman and Eve Myles reprising their roles as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper.

The Spirit Trap

Posted: 24 Jul 2010 08:41 PM PDT

Victorian ghost tales have been a staple of our fictional diet since Charles Dickens released A Christmas Carol and the era of spirit mediums and spirit photography does provide a perfect setting to be used for such tales, making the era a prime setting when a tale needs to have a certain air of mystery and shadow.

Trevor Baxter and Christopher Benjamin are Litefoot and Jago...The third installment in the Jago and Litefoot audio series, The Spirit Trap delves into the unknown region of the afterlife and communicating with the dead as people seem to disappear after a session with Mrs. Vanguard, a spirit medium. Soon Jago and Litefoot are once again on the case and they appear now to have great confidence doing so, as if as the series goes on they are investigating these strange occurrences more by choice then circumstance.

This more intentional path to the sleuthing means that we are not starting to question just how much trouble these two characters could just stumble into without it looking stale and repetitive.

Once again the main cast is superb in execution and it's also nice to see things such as Jago's theater background being used again, this time to expose fraudulent psychics and Litefoot's logical deduction reasoning out the truth of a violent mysterious fire, testament's also that the writer's of all of the scripts so far knew the tendencies of the main characters well and this play is no exception, as it utilizes it's two leads strength and builds upon it.

Doctor Who spinoff Jago & Litefoot from Big FinishAlthough it is a decent story and it moves along quite well, we have seen this kind of invasion of the dead and duplicates before, from Invasion of the Body Snatchers type films and all it's forms, down to an episode of Doctor Who itself in The Unquiet Dead.

Sometimes this play does not make the best use of it's main antagonist and it shows, but it is still a   very good play with a few truly great scenes like Jago being stuck in a 'limbo' and the final confrontation, but at times the audio dips into limbo itself, although only for short periods and it as a whole is still a good production.

I suspect that if you enjoyed the last two installments of this series you will enjoy this one as well, as a part of the series it is great although it does have problems standing up on it's own slightly, and it's shortcomings are far outweighed by the stellar performances given and the exciting continuation of a wider story to be concluded in the next and final play of the story arc.

Jago and Litefoot series 1 is available from www.bigfinish.com.
