| Bernice Summerfield - The Big News Posted: 01 Aug 2010 03:50 AM PDT We're delighted to announce that September 2010 sees the online launch of Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried, a 10-minute CGI animated adventure that will be available to view absolutely free of charge. Lisa Bowerman is back as Benny, who is returning to her roots as an archaeologist – although it isn't long before she's being pursued through the ruins of an alien world by a deadly adversary. Dead and Buried is animated by Alex Mallinson, who has been working on the project for months. "I've created animated trailers for Cyberman and Dalek Empire in the past but this is a much more complicated prospect," he says. "John Ainsworth and Eddie Robson have written a cracking yarn which is proving a joy and a challenge to animate. "It's taken weeks of patient construction, animation, rendering and compositing but it doesn't truly spring to life until Matthew Cochrane's evocative sound design is added. However it's still proven more work than any of us imagined, which is why Benny Series 11 has been delayed a month. I hope this will make up for it!" There's a glimpse of what's to come in the teaser trailer, available here. The final animation will be available in September, completely free and will lead into the events of Bernice Summerfield 11.1 Resurrecting the Past. Season 11 of Benny is available for pre-order now. | ||

| Posted: 27 Jul 2010 11:58 PM PDT Production is continuing on The Four Doctors, the eagerly awaited special release that unites the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctor in a time-bending battle against the Daleks. The story, which is written by Peter Anghelides and stars Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Nicholas Briggs, is released in December and will be available only to subscribers of the main Doctor Who range. Also, in a departure to previous years, there are no plans to subsequently make this story available for sale. The Four Doctors will only ever be available to Big Finish subscribers. For details on how to subscribe, check out the page here... | ||
| Posted: 27 Jul 2010 09:41 PM PDT The First Doctor will be getting a new companion in The Companion Chronicles. Tom Allen will be joining the Big Finish fold as Oliver Harper, a city trader from the 1960s who meets the Doctor and Steven Taylor (Peter Purves) in the February 2011 release, The Perpetual Bond. "Oliver is an interesting character," says producer David Richardson. "He teams up with the TARDIS crew when aliens infiltrate the City of London, but he's not exactly what he appears… His story arc will play out over a number of releases, all of which will be performed by Steven and Tom." The second story, Cold Equations, will follow in June 2011. "We've already recorded The Perpetual Bond, and I'm thrilled with it - Peter and Tom shine in some lovely dramatic scenes. Oh, and for those who like to know these things, it takes place immediately after The Daleks' Master Plan…" | ||

| Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:39 PM PDT Exec producer Nick Briggs will be away from the Big Finish office (but never out of touch - with email, you're never alone!) and in Nottingham for the next three weeks. Nick will be working for the Classic Thriller Season at the Theatre Royal Nottingham. He is directing the first play, Murder With Love (by Francis Durbridge) and starring in the second play, Murdered To Death, playing the aptly named Inspector Pratt. Big Finish studio genius, sound designer and composer Toby Robinson has composed the music for both these productions, and the casts feature other actors you'll recognize from BF cast lists down the ages. In no particular order, Sam Clemens (Blue Forgotten Planet, Holmes and the Ripper), Adrian Lloyd-James (Dalek Empire), Jo Castleton (Brotherhood of the Daleks, The Marian Conspiracy), Karen Henson (Dalek War, The Apocalypse Element) and Patric Kearns (Curse of the Daleks). So, autograph hunters, head for that stage door now! 'The plays are done in the old tradition of weekly rep,' says Nick. 'And this season has been going for twenty-two years now, under the stewardship of the indomitable Colin McIntyre. The local audience has been so loyal to us over the years; loving the potential for cock-ups with such a short rehearsal period as much as they love the twists and turns of the thrillers. 'I've played Sherlock Holmes there for the past two years, but this year it's a complete change,' Briggs notes. 'Far from being the most brilliant detective in history... I'm playing a man who is completely without a clue. In fact, he's such an idiot, he actually manages to shoot a policeman when reconstructing a murder. He's kind of an English version of Inspector Clouseau.' Murder With Love runs from Monday 2nd until Saturday 7th August. Murdered To Death runs from Monday 9th until Saturday 14th August. You can find more details of the Classic Thriller Season, with booking information at http://www.royalcentre-nottingham.co.uk | ||
| Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:17 AM PDT It's always tempting to moan when you're snowed under with work. But then I remind myself of several things. I'm doing a job that I love unreservedly. So, Briggs, stop whining about the fact that you were directing Colin Baker for six days when you were behind on your writing tasks! First off, it was a joy to spend that time with Colin and the great guest casts we got (no spoilers!) and our lovely studio man, Toby Robinson. And secondly, those writing tasks aren't that far behind. And anyway, they're not a chore! They're Doctor Blinkin' Who, after all! It's my favourite thing. And it's when I remember that, that I suddenly have a flurry of brain activity that results in script progress... when I remember that my 'job' is to think up new and exciting ways for the Doctor to have adventures and defeat his foes. That's not a chore, it's a privilege. And then I remember how totally understanding my wife is about it (she's one in a million) and how lucky I am to have such a great little boy for a son. Okay, okay, no need to reach for the sick bucket! This is just my lucky life. It wasn't always this way, so I've decided to enjoy it while I can. And then, to top it all, I find out that Frazer Hines has been secretly suffering with cancer for years and that he's finally beaten it. I can't tell you how happy I am for him. I can have a go, though... I'm incredibly happy. I felt elated when I read that news. And I wrote and told him so. That kind of suffering really puts any silly moans about workload into perspective, doesn't it? So even though this isn't January 1st, I just wanted to make a public statement that there will be no more moaning from me about my 'job'. All I have to do is remember exactly what my job is and how joyous I really find it. So there. And by the way, if you really want to see me enjoying myself, come to the Theatre Royal Nottingham in a couple of weeks' time and see me playing Inspector Pratt in 'Murdered To Death', a comedy murder thriller. Which reminds me, alongside writing a story for the Seventh Doctor, some scripts for the Fourth Doctor, a series for Charley Pollard and a whole new Doctor Who series for... (ah, that would be telling), I've got some lines to learn! So, I'll be back in the office in three weeks' time. And then there'll be another podcast to do. I'm rather looking forward to that. Good Lorrrrrrrd! | ||
| Posted: 23 Jul 2010 02:08 AM PDT Big Finish is back from Los Angeles and this year's Dark Shadows Festival, which gathered over a dozen actors from the show, including Jonathan Frid and David Selby, for its annual weekend-long celebration. The audio dramas were the subject of two stage panels, the first of which marked the convention debut of Andrew Collins, who plays vampire Barnabas in the new stories. Producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and Stuart Manning discussed the range and future plans, alongside actress Ursula Burton (Susan Griffin), writers Eric Wallace and Debbie Smith and regular director Darren Gross. Meanwhile, a rare promotional poster for The Night Whispers was a hit at the collectibles auction, raising over $200 for charity. Thanks to everyone who visited the Big Finish table and supported the range. The new full-cast mini-series Kingdom of the Dead is out now, featuring a mammoth cast, including David Selby, Lara Parker, John Karlen, Jerry Lacy, Kathryn Leigh Scott and David Warner. The box set is available on CD and download. Apologies for the delay to the appearance of the download editon to buy; it's available o the site now. Also just released is Dark Shadows: Music from the Audio Dramas, collecting the best of Nigel Fairs' scores from the CDs. The next Dark Shadows release is The Doll House, starring Marie Wallace and Terry Crawford, exploring the fate of the doomed Collins bride Jenny. The story is in the final stages of post production and will now be released in August. | ||
