Jingle Bells

Having arrived home from Bath at 10pm on Christmas Eve before wrapping my presents I just wanted to say a very Happy Christmas to anyone who is mad enough to want to log on to my blog over the Christmas period! When I say "mad" - it is a flattering 'madness' that you should even think about me at Christmas! I have been panto driven for the last two weeks having gone straight from Noises Off, via Chicago, into rehearsals for Jack and the Beanstalk - but I wanted to be sure to thank you all for your support and interest over the last few years and a special thank you to the wonderful, uncomplaining and diligent Rob Cope for keeping this website so informative and interesting even though I am not always that good at keeping him informed. To Rob and to all of you - thanks and have a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Come and see me in Bath until the 25th January if you have the chance - it is a fun panto and everyone in it is both good and lovely!

More after Christmas - I promise!!!

New ‘Wood Order

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 07:34 AM PDT

Excitable Torchwood fans, still vibrating with enough energy to power the village of Stonebroom after this weekends announcements can ease themselves back down to Earth by picking up Issue numero Uno of the Torchwood Comic.

Publishers Titan have released this animated trailer to celebrate its launch tomorrow.

Artist Tommy Lee Edwards, who's  currently working with the chief of chat Jonathan Ross on the hit comic series Turf has teamed up with John Barrowman and his sister Carole E. to bring you Captain Jack and the Selkie which sees (Group) Captain Jack facing a deadly threat on a remote Scottish island.

In the second story – entitled Broken Torchwood Script Editor Gary Russell and Judge Dredd and Doctor Who comic artist Adrian Salmon invite fans into a cosmic hotel (please let that be better than it sounds) where Jack and Ianto are trapped along with an old enemy from the TV series.

Whether or not you see Ianto's return as contrition towards fans still weaping into there red ties or as a welcome nod to the past by a licenced comic stuck between old and new potential fans depends on just how much faith you have in the new series (due to hit screens in the summer of 2011.)

Both stories have already appeared in Titan's Torchwood Magazine in the UK.

Two collectable covers – an art cover and a picture cover – will be available for the issue which goes on sale in the US on 10th August from all good (and hopefully not-so-good) retailers.

Rule No. 1: The Grand Moff Lies

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:57 AM PDT

This is probably less news and more trivia, but Steven Moffat has divulged an impossibly small piece of information regarding the casting of Sir Michael Gambon in the ever-fast-approaching Christmas special (less than five months away!):
Doctor Who guest and Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon

"We sent him a script, asked him to do it, and he said, 'Yes.'  Simple as that."

But was it a resounding "YES!" or was it a mere "Yes, okay, I suppose I'll do it?"  Just what is Gambon's opinion of Doctor Who?  Moffat shed some light:

"I didn't get the impression that he was a fan of 'Doctor Who,' except insofar as everyone in Britain is at the moment, but it's really…with these guys, send them a good part and there's a really stonking chance they'll do it.

"I mean, if it's a good script…and you think it is…they're being offered prime-time on Christmas day, really, so there's a real chance you can get anyone for that.

"But it's very exciting.  He's brilliant.  Of course he's brilliant.  Absolutely brilliant.  What a voice."

The interviewer, Premium Hollywood's Will Harris, then decided to try and weed out of the Grand Moff some clues as to what we can expect for a plot this 25th December, via the "Orient Express in Space" teaser from the end of The Big Bang.  The Exec's response?

"[What] you have to keep in mind that I genuinely lie. I do. I actively lie to people about what's going to happen in 'Doctor Who.' I'm not officially employed with the BBC. I can say any old thing I like. Even if I told you something, there's no guarantee that it's true. Disinformation and the white noise of nonsense is how we get through this!"

Something tells me that Steven may someday appear out of thin air right before our eyes with a vortex manipulator and fake his own death, leaving a fez and a stone Dalek to distract us while he wires himself to a Pandorica.  Hey, it can happen!

The big question is, will the Orient Express appear at all, now that Moffat has confirmed that he stretches the truth?  It seems we'll just have to wait on that one!

For the scoop on Gambon's character in Who, check out Mez Burdett's Ssshh… Christmas Special Spoilers.  As the title suggests, don't click that link if you want every detail about the episode to be a complete surprise!

Captain John Threatens Tickles

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 01:05 AM PDT

Actor James Masters has spoken to i09.com about the secret to playing a villain convincingly – and references his character Captain John who was a recurring nemesis for Captain Jack and his team in Torchwood series 2.

Torchwood - Captain John and Captain JackJames played evil-and-then-reformed vampire Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its LA based spin off Angel. He also played naughty characters in Smallville and Caprica. When asked how he got into the mindset of various nefarious characters, Marsters remarked:

"You have to come to grips with the fact that it's fun to hurt people. That's a hard thing to admit. But there actually is a rush to it. And if you give in to it, then you're evil."

And what of his Torchwood character Captain John, last seen walking off from the Torchwood hub to explore the world and see what it had to offer? James honestly doesn't know yet but since the show is being made in America, it should be a lot easier for the man himself to hopefully get involved with the role again to cause more trouble for Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper. He does seem very keen to reprise the role and even made this promise to Russell T Davies if he doesn't get a call from him:

"If he doesn't call me, then I am going to find him. I will tickle him until he bleeds."

We'll keep you updated on that one.

When Torchwood comes back it simply has to involve Captain John in a bigger role. Marsters bought a huge chunk of personality to the show which really helped "sell" it to a larger audience. But it all comes down to opinion, what do you think, Kasterborousions (it's a word), should Captain John come back for another showdown?

Or should he be one of the new Torchwood team members?

Steven Moffat – Game Geek?

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Does Steven Moffat spend all day playing video games, stopping briefly to issue dicatation via a speech to text app on a nearby laptop? How else do you explain the following?

Doctor Who boss Steven MoffatAs noticed by www.gamepeople.co.uk – the Sherlock episode "A Study in Pink" features references to the PlayStation 3 game Heavy Rain. It's more than just a plot element too – the artistic direction (including the short focal length of the cityscapes) and the origami killer in the second episode not to mention the frequent use of publishing of emotions and thoughts to the screen via text in the middle of action are ideas seen already in Heavy Rain.

Sherlock puts Heavy Rain PS3 to excellent use in the show that stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes and Martin Freeman as Watson.

As if to disclose the source of their inspiration for those in the know, as the show first uses Heavy Rain's words-on-the-screen technique Sherlock says "It's obvious isn't it? She's been in Heavy Rain in the last few hours… where has there been Heavy Rain and strong wind in that time?"

So – is this why we waited so long for a Doctor Who game – so Steven Moffat could spend a few hours playing it?

Operation Platinum Age – The Final Word

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 08:39 AM PDT

Recently, I wrote a two-part observation of Matt Smith and Steven Moffat's first eight episodes of Doctor Who (entitled Operation Platinum Age Part 1 and Operation Platinum Age Part 2).  The purpose of the article was to evaluate the season so far, compare it to previous seasons and speculate upon its story arc.

Doctor Who - The Pandorica OpensI concluded that, while the Russell T Davies era had been rightly regarded as Doctor Who's 'golden age', it was becoming apparent that Smith and Moffat were ushering us into something greater.  Now this season has come to a spectacular end, it seems only proper that I should similarly evaluate the final five episodes and question whether that conclusion still holds.

Five stories ago, I was still raving about the new Doctor (and would rave yet more in a subsequent article entitled The Triumph of Doctor Smith).  Frankly, my rave looks as if it may never end.  From the outset, I have believed – and still believe – that Matt Smith is playing the best Doctor we've ever had – and what a lovely position for those who love him to be in: to know that the current guy is the best.  Now I know how those David Tennant fans felt!

Of course, many fans continue to adore Tennant, but some take every comparison in Smith's favour as an attack on something they deem unassailable, but when I suggest that Smith is the best, this is not meant as a dig at ten other quite brilliant incarnations.  However, this non-prescriptive opinion is offered by one who has seen/heard every episode of TV Doctor Who several times over (and heard/read perhaps 75% of the available audios, annuals, comic strips, novels, etc, etc of the last 47 years).  I've loved all the Doctors at some time or other, but Smith seems to offer the most precise and realistic portrayal of the character as set down on paper and pared to its basics.

Last time I wrote, my favourite new Doctor moments saw him facing down the new (still gorgeous, sorry) Daleks, jumping out of Rory's cake (again), and telling the Atraxi fleet to run.  Now I find myself loving his sermon at Stonehenge, where he seemed to channel both John Lydon and Billy Graham in order to tell an even bigger fleet of ships to run.  Add to this his Fez moment and he's beginning to look unassailable himself – and a lot like the Doctor that River Song described in Silence in the Library.  He looks great and sounds great, and any doubts about his suitability to the role have now, surely, been set to rest.

When I last signed off, my biggest concern about this season was that its middle had been a bit saggy.  I suggested that once any given season gets past the premise of the Doctor showing the wonders of the universe to a single, wide-eyed companion, the concept tends to dilute with the addition of multiple companions.  Don't get me wrong, Rory is one of the best things about Amy's Choice and Vampires of Venice, but it seems significant that these are perhaps the weakest stories of the season.  This has nothing to do with Arthur Darvill (who is sublime), but the show seems to work best – unless there's an epic storyline to be had – with just two leads.

There's an exuberant joie de vivre to a Doctor/Rose, Doctor/Donna, Doctor/Martha pairing; but that intimacy and togetherness tends to dissipate when someone crashes the party – particularly if that someone is Jealousy.  Maybe the Amy's Choice and Vampires of Venice were just weak stories, but we've seen things fall apart at this stage in previous seasons (The Doctor's Daughter and The Long Game spring to mind).

Matt Smith – Together

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 04:13 AM PDT

Together stars Doctor Who star Matt Smith

Remember earlier in the year when Matt Smith was interviewed at Cannes a few weeks before Doctor Who kicked off? He was in France to promote the short film Together, directed by Eicke Bettinga.

Well, the long awaited release of the critically acclaimed Together has been announced, and is available on iTunes.

So what's it about? Well with the outline: "Can you handle grief by 'forcing' your affection onto somebody?" the film tells the story of a family grieving for their son…

A year after his brother's death, Rob discovers that the only way to help his father cope with the loss is to 'force' his affection onto him…

Featuring Smith alongside John Vine (an actor with a string of TV and movie credits to his name), Guy Flanagan (The Bill, Being Human, Party Animals) and Amanda Boxer (Trial and Retribution, Chalk), Together was written by Eicke Bettinga & Zorana Piggott, who also produced the short.

Find out more about the movie via its Facebook Fanpage!

Torchwood’s New World Order

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 10:18 PM PDT

The Hollywood Reporter claims that further details of Torchwood Series 4 have become known – and that the 10 part serial thriller has the umbrella title of The New World.

Torchwood Series 4 newsAccording to the popular showbiz trade paper, Torchwood itself is nothing more than a legend by 2011; personnel remembered but never seen or spoken to…

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now … it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

As revealed a few days ago, a team of writers has already been assembled. With John Barrowman and Eve Myles reprising Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, and with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner both on hand as Executive Producers, it finally seems that the BBC Wales/BBC Worldwide/Starz co-production is coming together!

Russell T Davies is also quick to placate existing Torchwood fans that like their share of alien bonking in the shape of (Group) Captain Jack Harkness:

"If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely … [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene — it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

So – a new world for Torchwood. Or is it something more? A new world order, perhaps…?

Torchwood: The New World

Torchwood: The New World
News Dated: 8/8/2010

The Hollywood Reporter and USA Today have lifted the lid on the title for Torchwood Series Four (Torchwood: The New World), as well as a few juicy bits of information, courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner.

The Hollywoord Reporter:

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue.

Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

"The two teams coming together is a big part of the story -- are they friends or enemies? There's a lot of sparks and excitement."

"We definitely have a really big story to tell," added executive producer Julie Gardner. "It's absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience."

The ten episodes will be very fast paced, telling a self-contained story with the miniseries "Children of Earth" being used as a template.

Being on Starz, the show could potentially take advantage of looser standards for nudity and violence.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

USA Today:

"New" is the operative word. The team has left Wales for America, as creator Russell T. Davies has left Britain for Los Angeles. The case will tie the two remaining Torchwood members (Jack and Eve Myles's Gwen) to the CIA, and will expand into a world-wide threat. And yet, says Davies, it "will be faithful" to the BBC original.

Davies says this story, which "had been ticking away in my mind for a long while," had not been planned as a Torchwood story at all. "And suddenly I thought, there's a popular show, there's a great story, let's put them together...It felt like it definitely could move forward and become new again."

Though it will be newer and bigger, the tone won't change, says Davies. Barrowman's Jack will still be TV's only bi-sexual hero, character will still be stressed, and humor will still play a large part in the show's make-up.

"I sit there in the editing room saying 'Don't cut that joke! Cut the plot, cut the murder, cut the story, but don't cut the joke.'...It will always be a cheeky show."

In the meantime, two new posters have surfaced online, produced by Starz, and featuring images of both Captain Jack and Gwen, touting the new title and Summer 2011 airdate. [see right]

A New World for Torchwood

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 02:52 PM PDT

Torchwood: The New World - Captain Jack

As reported in Doctor Who: Podshock, the Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood is being relaunched in the US on the Starz network.

The HollywoodReporter.com has an article reporting that name of the rebooted series in the US is Torchwood: The New World. Like last year's acclaimed Torchwood: Children of Earth I would suppose. It is to be ten episodes which to my understanding are telling a story much the same way as Children of Earth did with its five episodes run.

'Torchwood' gets new title: 'The New World': "Starz' 'Torchwood' reboot will be titled 'Torchwood: The New World' and creator Russell T Davies gave some insight into the storyline.

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is 'like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers.' Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."
The report also contains images of teaser posters which were seen at TCA; the images appear to be previously existing photos of John Barrowman and Eve Myles, with the legend "Torchwood: The New World, Coming Summer 2011."

USA Today also has details on the series' tone, and more quotes from Davies:

Kindle Surprise

Doctor Who on Kindle - The Glamour ChaseFacing stiff competition from Apple's iPad, Amazon have launched their own UK Kindle Bookstore where users of Amazon's  (now reduced) Ebook reader, the Kindle,  can find Doctor Who titles and more than 40,000 other books at the lowest prices of any e-Bookstore.

Or so the website claims; so being the ever ready consumer watchdogs that we aren't; here's a little test, using Kindle's Marketplace, Apples iBooks, and as a comparison, the online BBC Book shop and Waterstones we took the three newest Doctor Who Books (Nuclear Time by Oli Smith, The Kings Dragon by Una McCormack and The Glamour Chase by Gary Russell) and compared prices to see if Kindle really does provide more Who for less.

The most surprising thing is that iBooks do not carry the three novels mentioned above*

For the remaining sites here is the run down:

The Kings Dragon

Kindle £3.98

BBC Books £5.49

Waterstones £4.19

The Glamour Chase

Kindle £4.17

BBC Books £5.49

Waterstones £4.89

Nuclear Time

Kindle £4.17

BBC Books £5.49

Waterstones  £4.89

The Waterstones offering is in fact the print version for those of us who still love the feel of a book. The eBook version will set you back £6.75 on their website.

So there are savings to be made using the Kindle.

In July Amazon launched the 'Kindle Next Generation' device which was both 15 per-cent lighter with 5o per-cent better contrast than the previous Kindle 2.

According to Amazon the device is now Wi-fi compatible rather than using the cumbersome 3G network connection to download eBooks.

While book prices are low; the device will set you back £109 (about $170).

Other manufacturers have jumped on the eBook reader bandwagon;

Barnes & Noble sells the Nook at $199 in the US, with a Wi-Fi only version for $149. Borders Group offers the Kobo e-Reader for $149, while the Sony Reader Daily Edition costs $250.

So how many Who fans out there would consider using an ebook for the latest novels? How many fans already do? Drop us a line below.

Visit Amazon's Kindle page to see the full list of available Doctor Who titles.

*I accessed the app using an iTouch and found no links for these three titles; if this isn't the case then please drop a comment in below.

Wiped! Doctor Who’s Missing Episodes

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 03:12 AM PDT

Richard Molesworth is the author behind Wiped! Doctor Who's Missing Episodes, a new release from Telos Publishing this September, the book that tells the remarkable story on how the tapes came to be wiped, and the efforts that went into returning lost copies to the BBC.

Doctor Who - Wiped! looks at the history of missing episodes of Doctor WhoWiped! covers a somewhat contentious aspect of the BBC's history, that of their wholescale throwing away of archive television recordings from the sixties, in a period leading to around 1977/8 when it was largely stopped by the intervention of concerned individuals.

In the 1960s, the BBC screened 253 episodes of its cult science fiction show Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell and then Patrick Troughton as the time travelling Doctor. Yet by 1975, the Corporation had wiped the master tapes of every single one of these episodes. Of the 124 Doctor Who episodes starring Jon Pertwee shown between 1970 and 1974, the BBC destroyed over half of the original transmission tapes within two years of their original broadcast.

In the years that followed, the BBC, along with dedicated fans of the series, began the arduous task of trying to track down copies of as many missing Doctor Who episodes as possible. The search covered BBC sales vaults, foreign television stations, overseas archives, and numerous networks of private film collectors, until the tally of missing programmes was reduced to just 108 episodes.

For the first time, this book looks in detail at how the episodes came to be missing in the first place, and examines how material subsequently came to be returned to the BBC. Along the way, those people involved in the recovery of lost slices of Doctor Who's past tell their stories in candid detail, many for the very first time.

'I remember reading about the 'first' publically announced recovered episode in Doctor Who Magazine – Part Two of 'The Abominable Snowmen' – and not being able to get my head around the concept of episodes of a BBC programme being in a private collectors hands.  So I wanted to know more.

'As I got to know more people in the BBC, and talk to people who had returned episodes, I realised that the stories behind the finds were fascinating.'

No more rumours, no more misinformation, no more fan gossip. The truth about Doctor Who's missing episodes can now be told in full!

Published September 2010, Wiped! costs £15.99 and can be ordered directly from Telos Publishing at www.telos.co.uk.
