Jingle Bells

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 05:35 PM PDT

Having arrived home from Bath at 10pm on Christmas Eve before wrapping my presents I just wanted to say a very Happy Christmas to anyone who is mad enough to want to log on to my blog over the Christmas period! When I say "mad" - it is a flattering 'madness' that you should even think about me at Christmas! I have been panto driven for the last two weeks having gone straight from Noises Off, via Chicago, into rehearsals for Jack and the Beanstalk - but I wanted to be sure to thank you all for your support and interest over the last few years and a special thank you to the wonderful, uncomplaining and diligent Rob Cope for keeping this website so informative and interesting even though I am not always that good at keeping him informed. To Rob and to all of you - thanks and have a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Come and see me in Bath until the 25th January if you have the chance - it is a fun panto and everyone in it is both good and lovely!

More after Christmas - I promise!!!

Moffat and Gattis Tweet

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 05:27 PM PDT

How do the general public keep up with their favourite celebrities and what's going on in their day to day lives? Social network website Twitter off course! And how do Sci-Fi fans keep up with their favourite Sci-Fi actors and writers? Um…exactly the same way actually…

Doctor Who writer Mark Gatiss is a regular on TwitterSFX.com has highlighted some Twitter updates from the last week that were written by our favourite people. "Tweets of the Week" come from favourites such as Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek), Eliza Dushku (Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) comic scribe Mark Millar, film Director Wes Craven and musician David Arnold.

But for Doctor Who fans the stand out "Tweets" come from Doctor Who Gods Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis, who coincidently Executively Produced BBC's Sherlock together recently.  The Grand Moff Tweeted:

"Writing, spaced out on jetlag. That ought to work for Doctor Who. Doesn't".

And co conspirator Gattis left this:

"I hate the rain. It makes me blue. But there's something to be said for lashing rain. Cosy. May have to watch The Curse of Peladon".

Its heart warming that they both mention Doctor Who and how it seeps into their daily lives, as we all know it does?

Anyone out there follow their Tweets as well? Or do you have someone even more interesting from the world of Doctor Who that SFX haven't mentioned?

Vworp 3 – a Recollection

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 12:24 AM PDT

Back in July, I travelled to Manchester to take part in Vworp 3, the latest Doctor Who "mini-con" to take place at the Lass O'Gowrie pub. The third event in a series of "pubcons", Vworp 3 followed Vworp 2 – NovelCon in October 2009 and Vworp 1 in 2008.

Doctor Who director Graeme Harper was among the guests at Vworp 3Each of the previous events had focussed on a particular element of Doctor Who spinoff media – Vworp Vworp!/Vworp 1 focussed on Doctor Who Magazine and comic strips, while NovelCon looked at  the Virgin and BBC novels.

This time, rather than head down the obvious route and look at Doctor Who audios, mastermind Gareth Kavanagh opted to mix things up and invite an interesting selection of guests to discuss their "favourite things" about their involvement with Doctor Who.

The schedule for the day looked a bit like this:

9:30am Doors open
10am Dez Skinn (with Gareth Kavanagh)
11am Rob Shearman (with Christian Cawley)
12pm Sophie Aldred (with Charlie Ross)
1pm Lunch
2pm Terrance Dicks (with John Cooper)
3pm Chris Achilleos (with Ade Salmon)
4pm Andrew Cartmel (with Gareth Kavanagh)
5pm Teabreak
5:30pm Graeme Harper

With some minor chopping around, that's pretty much how the day proceeded; Doctor Who stars and creators chatting with video clips or stills about their involvement with the show. All this of course was interspersed with the smashing hospitality afforded at The Lass, with a great menu available through most of the day.

Here’s Some Clues…

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:45 PM PDT

Platform Online, the website for a student magazine run at Nottingham Trent University, recently had the privilege of an interview with Charles Cecil, who with the team at Sumo Digital developed Doctor Who: The Adventure Games!

Doctor Who - The Adventure GamesAfter playing the games you may have wondered if Matt Smith and Karen Gillan enjoyed providing the voice acting for the series, or if they just did it because they were paid to. Here's what Cecil observed:

"I've been very privileged because I actually [did] the voice directing for [one of the episodes] more recently and they've been fantastic.  Because both Matt and Karen are enthusiastic about the project, I found them very, very easy to direct."

But just because Matt and Karen were enthusiastic doesn't mean they immediately sank into their work! According to Cecil, acting for the camera and acting for the game are two totally separate forts:

"What's quite interesting is that what we require from them in a game perspective is quite different from what we would require in linear [media].

"So quite often I'll get them to go back and say: 'That's lovely delivery, but actually can you put an emphasis on this because what we're actually doing in this line is we're creating a clue – subliminally, it's not an obvious clue – but if you can change the emphasis and the way that you say it then you will be delivering more than just the acting of the line.'"

Keep an eye on this Cecil bloke; it sounds as if he's giving us clues by telling us about giving us clues. In other words, when you play future episodes (or replay present ones), pay close attention to how the Doctor and Amy emphasize their lines… you may benefit from it later on!

This just in… Doctor Who: The Adventure Games – Dawn of the Nortongate will be released exclusively in America and made available only to Mac users on 1st April 2011!
