Design a Spaceship!

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 06:50 AM PDT

Game designers grab your power ups and get ready to bash those creative blocks as Doctor Who is looking for fresh designers to work with their teams creating the new Sarah Jane Adventures game for CBBC.

Sarah Jane Adventures competitionTo enter the competition you need to create some sound effects and/or design a spaceship for the Krulius, an alien on The Sarah Jane Adventures website. The closing date is 17:00, Monday 11th October 2010.

Eight winners will be selected to attend a special two day master class on 23rd and 24th October 2010 with leading industry professionals in game design. The winners will work along side sound designers, visual designers and games executives to produce an online game for The Sarah Jane Adventures website.

All the potential winners have to do is enter one or both of the categories and best reflect the personality of the Krulius in their designs.

For the sound catagory, candidates are asked to record three different sound effects for the Krulius for each of the following;

When he moves When he breathes out his toxic breath When he uses the digital bio-converter and modem on his wrist

Each entry must be no longer than ten seconds (totaling thirty altogether) and should be made using sounds around you (computer sounds are allowed but no samples, only original work.)

For the visual task, candidates are asked to design a spacecraft for the Krulius with one special feature that will help him. Entries can be anything you can come up with and be created using any medium, be it digital, drawn, painted or even sculpted.

Accompanying entries should be a written description of no more than 200 words which should focus on the following:

how you came up with the ideas how you made the sound or decided on the special feature for the spaceship why your entry is right for the Krulius what makes you think it suits the audience.

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, suitability and how well your work reflects the Krulius by a panel of moderators from BBC Blast and The Sarah Jane Adventures before going before a final judging panel where four winners for each catagory will be chosen.

To enter, you can either upload an image or sound to the BBC Blast website (though you must be a member first and remember to tag either one game_design_sound or game_design_visual depending on the entry.)

You can also mail your entries along with your personal details and description to:

Game Design Competition, BBC Blast Online, MC3 D2, 201 Wood Lane, London, W12 7TS

Or email your design to blast-gamecomp@bbc.co.uk.

Entrants must be under 18 and have permission from a parent or guardian if under 16. Winners will be notified no later than Friday, 22nd October 2010.

Rex Is Not Your Dialect Coach

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:52 AM PDT

Ever wondered what David Tennant's failed US pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer might have been like?

His first TV project following Tennant's departure from Doctor Who, this US TV show was conceived and developed for recording and broadcast in 2010 – however no network picked up Rex.

The concept – in which Tennant plays a lawyer with stage fright, meaning he is unable to represent clients and coaches them to represent themselves in course – seemed to have plenty of milage.

So was it low on laughs, or was there something amiss with one of the performances…? Well wonder no more – we've got a clip below!

Somehow this clip has surfaced online, and it is fair to say Rex probably needed a bit of work – not least from David Tennant's accent!

Now I've never been to America, but I've seen quite a few of its inhabitants on the telly.

They rarely sound like that…

Torchwood: The New World

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:34 AM PDT

TorchwoodStarz have published more details of the upcoming Torchwood co-production with BBC Worldwide. The series is due for transmission in the summer of 2011.

SERIES SYNOPSIS
When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire human race. The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors - former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood's return. As a chain of events across the world links together the most disparate and unlikely individuals - including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs - a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself...
CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS (John Barrowman)
Jack looks like a hero. But he's so much more than that...

He's American, handsome, with a killer smile and a classic coat. But you don't expect heroes to be this much fun. He's witty, fast, subversive and there's a reason for that glint in his eye - he'll sleep with women, he'll sleep with men; if aliens invade, he'll sleep with them too. Got a problem with that? Tough! His dashing style hides a secret. There are mysteries about Jack - a man going under his name seems to have a history stretching back to World War 2, or even earlier, to the Nineteenth century, the Eighteenth...

Truth is, Jack Harkness is immortal. A fixed point in time and space. The only one of his kind. For thousands of years, he has never been able to die. When killed, he comes back to life - seconds later. Though his tragedy is, he feels every death. It hurts - and so does the passage of time. He can never love anyone for too long, because he will always lose them. As a result, he's lived many lives. He's been a conman, a thief, an adventurer - though more a rogue than a villain, because his perspective on human life makes him appreciate this world all the more.

Jack once ran the Torchwood Institute, a British organization dedicated to fighting the strange and bizarre. He was king of his own little world for a while, the happiest he'd ever been. But Torchwood fell. His friends were killed. The Institute closed down, and Jack disappeared, to start yet another of his many new lives. And yet... The only thing that could call Jack Harkness back is his unstated love for Gwen Cooper. And when a new, epic danger affects the whole planet, Jack finds himself back at the center of events, fighting not just for his own life, but for everyone on Earth. But this time, are the stakes too high?
GWEN COOPER (Eve Myles)
All Gwen wants is a quiet life. Honest.

She's Welsh, lives in seclusion, far away from the city, on a cliff top in the wilds of South Wales with her devoted husband, and baby Anwen - it's a rural idyll. And it's a lie. Gwen is in hiding, because she once lived the most extraordinary life. She was the heart and soul of an organization called Torchwood, a freelance band of fighters who fought the strange and unexplained. She was a defender of the human race.
But no more. Torchwood was destroyed. Her colleagues died, or fled. And Gwen hid herself away, for the rest of her life, to protect her loved ones. But knowing, just knowing, that one day trouble would come calling again.

She lives the ultimate double life: the funny, salty, earthy woman who loves home and family, combined with the tough, ruthless warrior, who loves the thrill of the fight. She's both selfish and selfless. And never doubt it - when Gwen's in a crisis, she is magnificent. Gun in both hands, baby strapped to her chest, she'll run and fight and never give up.

It's passion, in the end: Gwen's all about passion. She loves her man, she loves her child, she loves this mad old world, and maybe she loves Captain Jack Harkness just a little too much. But when the events of this story push Gwen to the limit, she'll need to call on resources she never knew she had, to take action and make the most terrible decisions, on behalf of all mankind.
REX MATHESON (Actor TBD)
He's 28, the golden boy.

Has been, all his life. Harvard education, fast-tracker in the C.I.A., destined for success. Though he's never taken it easy – Rex hustles, seduces and campaigns to get where he is today. He can talk his way into anything, then charm his way out, fast. He's made a lot of enemies, but his friends and lovers would defend him to death. His choice of career is significant. Someone like Rex could make a fortune in Wall Street, or Hollywood. But choosing the C.I.A. says a lot about him: that for all his swagger, he does believe in justice. And will fight for it.

Slowly but surely, we see him make friends. He's thrown together a bunch of people known as Torchwood, the only people who might have the answer to a global mystery. To Rex, at first, they're a bunch of freaks. Welsh women and World War 2 Captains, what's that about?! But as they race from one crisis to another, dodging assassins, blackmail, corruption and conspiracy, from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai, Rex forges friendships in the heat of fire. He learns to trust his new colleagues. And they realize that this dangerous, dazzling, reckless man is the best friend they could ever have, in a world going to hell.
They frighten us, men like Rex. We wish we were him; we never will be.

Help design a Sarah Jane Adventures game

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 11:32 PM PDT

BBC Blast has launched a competition looking for young designers, aged between 13 and 19, with fresh ideas to work with their teams and help create a new The Sarah Jane Adventures game for CBBC.

The competition runs until 5pm on Monday, 11th October 2010. The task is to make some sound effects and/or design a spaceship for the Krulius, an alien on The Sarah Jane Adventures website.

Up to 8 winners will get the chance to attend a two day master class on 23rd and 24th October 2010 with leading industry professionals involved in games design. They will work alongside sound designers, visual designers and games executives to produce an online game for The Sarah Jane Adventures website.

To enter in the sound category you need to record 3 different sound effects for the Krulius. He should have a sound for each of the following:-
  • When he moves
  • When he breathes out his toxic breath
  • When he uses the digital bio-converter and modem on his wrist
Each sound should be up to 10 seconds long so that the whole entry is no longer than 30 seconds.

To enter in the visual category you need to design a spaceship for the Krulius including a special feature which will be useful to him. You could draw it, paint it, create a collage for your design and digitally manipulate it.

To accompany either entry, you need to write a description of no more than 200 words on the creative thought behind your entry and how the sounds were made or why the special feature on the spaceship will be useful to the Krulius.

Full details and resources for you to use are available on the BBC Blast website.

Bernice Animation Poster

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 11:30 PM PDT

Doctor Who spinoff from Big Finish - Bernice SummerfieldBig Finish have released a smashing new poster featuring the animated version of Bernice Summerfield, as voiced by Lisa Bowerman in the forthcoming 10 minute CGI short, Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried, which will be available online absolutely free in September.

(Click the poster on the right to view in in hi-res)

Summerfield is the creation of Paul Cornell (Father's Day, Human Nature) and first appeared in the Virgin Books adventure Love and War in which she became a long-term companion of the Seventh Doctor.

Eventually, Benny – as she is affectionately known – moved to Big Finish and has been voiced by Lisa Bowerman ever since. Dead and Buried heralds the start of a brand new series of adventures for the archeologist, who is possibly the longest-running spinoff character in western culture. In fact, as Lisa told us in 2009:

"I found on some internet site that she's one of the longest running ongoing characters out there. She's way beyond a spinoff niche now – she's pretty buoyant!"

Animator Alex Mallinson, who we'll be interviewing in a few weeks time, says:

"It's taken weeks of patient construction, animation, rendering and compositing but it doesn't truly spring to life until Matthew Cochrane's evocative sound design is added. "

Find out more about this exciting new look for Bernice Summerfield at www.bernicesummerfield.co.uk.

Magazine Sales Increase

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 07:30 PM PDT

Hot on the heels of its award from the Guinness World Records Doctor Who Magazine has recorded an ABC (the circulation standard of the print media) of 35,375 for the current period.

The world record holding publication for the longest running TV tie in, with 31 years under its belt,  has seen its readership steady increase in the six years since the shows return.

Editor Tom Spilsbury commented;

"I'm delighted that we've gained so many new readers who have liked what they've found in our pages."

Of all of Panini's UK Licenced titles Doctor Who Magazine is currently second to Hannah Montana Magazine which recorded an ABC of 42,017 for the January to June period.

Overall Licenced Magazines have a strong grip on the market with BBC Magazines and Edgmont leading the way – no doubt good news for Doctor Who Adventures.

Edgmont currently has the highest percentage of of the primary girls and pre-teen markets by both volume and retail sales value with rises for Go Girl, Disney Princess and Barbie.

Meanwhile BBC Magazines saw circulations rise by over 3% and its subscriptions rose to an all time high with its pre-school sections and the ever reliable Top Gear Magazine both performing well despite a dip in sales for the later.

A New Sonic Screwdriver!

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 06:37 PM PDT

With all the action figures and paraphernalia from the new series of Doctor Who, a lot of the classic merchandise has been put to one side recently. Yes, there have been figures of all eleven Doctors released as well as classic villains but the majority of the collectibles has focused on the last five years of Who, which is no bad thing.

Doctor Who - Third Doctor's Sonic ScrewdriverNow however, manufacturers have decreed "No more!" and have released a lovingly realised "Classic Sonic Screwdriver" for kids old and young to use. It's based on the Third Doctor's model and will take die hard fans back to the old school days, before we even realised that the device had a setting to reattach barbed wire. It's an exclusive to Forbidden Planet and the description reads as:

"The Sonic Screwdriver is a versatile tool and defensive device first used by the Doctor in his second incarnation for opening up hatches, panels and controls.

Later uses included cutting through wall sections and even as a conventional screwdriver. During the Third Doctor's exile on Earth he had a larger and more elaborately detailed version, which had a decorated silver handle and black and yellow stripes. This version had even more functions including detecting security traps, remote detonation of mines, opening doors and restraints, creating ignition sparks and again removing screws and fixings.

In this exclusive release is an electronic version of the Third Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver with 2 sounds and spring loaded sound activation."

This is a must for any Doctor Who fans that wetted their ears with the Pertwee era of Who. It's also a must for any collector, any casual viewer, anyone who hasn't seen the show at all…oh just go and buy it already!

The Third Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver is available in the UK and Ireland only from September 10th 2010. You can pre order it now from www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk.

Moral Decay of Youth?

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 09:25 AM PDT

Doctor Who cartoonist and sole voice of reason Mike Collins (The Nightmare Game, The Lodger) has refuted claims by an American Professor that superheroes of today are 'bad role models.'

Psychologist Sharon Lamb – professor of mental health at University of Massachusetts Boston – believes that rather than standing for truth, justice and the American way modern superheroes are maladjusted- characterised by their often mindless aggression and rampant sexism.

Speaking at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in San Diego, California; she said:

"Today's superhero is too much like an action hero who participates in non-stop violence; he's aggressive, sarcastic, and rarely speaks to the virtue of doing good for humanity.

"These men, like Iron Man, exploit women, flaunt bling and convey their manhood with high-powered guns."

Lamb surveyed 674 boys aged four to 18, talking to sales staff in America's shopping malls and came to understand what boys were watching on TV and at the movies.

Along with her co-authors, Lamb came to the conclusion that Marketers were taking advantage of boys who were still forging their own masculinity.

Her research led her to divide these media paradigms into two groups, "Players" and "Slackers". Under pressure to meet the ideals laid out by the Players i.e. superheroes, most boys choose not to try and instead buck all responsiblities in order to avoid failing.

Leading her to claim that these hardnosed heroes may be damaging the social skills of teenagers and even affecting their performance at school.

Rather than this 'narrow version of masculinity' she said young boys should look up to superheroes like Superman, "because outside of their costumes they were real people with real problems and many vulnerabilities."

But Mike Collins who has also worked for DC Comics called modern superheroes 'aspirational'.

When Stan Lee set up Marvel Comics in the early 1960s he created not only Iron Man, but Spider-man, the Hulk and X-Men, and one of the things he wanted to do was to create characters everyone identified with because they had problems they had to overcome.

"I think it makes more interesting stories – you need the grit to make the pearl.

He argues that the conundrums superheroes face are more fraught and interesting because of the problems they face in their day to day lives.

While it is an interesting study the conclusions it draws and the shortcuts it takes with superhero iconography make it hard to take.

It feels like a prime example of 'regression to the mean' Lamb has looked at these children's lives seen what they do with their time, found something that she disagrees with and has claimed that it has taken them off the right path.

Rather than say, the educational system, school budgets, a lack of decent public libraries, better teaching, the dissolving of the traditional Amercian family or any other major social/political reason you care to name.

Even the term 'modern superhero' is fraught with dangerous sub-clauses like traps in the temple of doom.

What exactly is a modern superhero? Most Marvel/DC heroes, the ones that are appearing in the movies those boys she surveyed have been seeing were created decades ago.

If they've changed, they've changed to meet what the public desire to see and read.

52, Civil War, even Watchmen have taken the concept of the superhero and placed it on our doorstep along with the constant threat of serperatist violence and knee-jerk political reactions that follow it. The Dark Knight ends with a superhero taking on the mantle of the villain just so the public can believe that there was once hope.

Again this leads to the same conclusion; the problem is not children or superheroes but the world they inhabit, something which Doctor Who, in its own joyously optimistic way, tries to make easier by sharing the burden – anyone can be a hero… even Mickey.

The Guardian of the Solar System Reviewed

Life and death are at the very center of our lives every waking moment.

Even if we are consciously unaware of the fact that one day we have to pass onto whatever lies beyond this life, it is always there like a dark shadow at the very back of our respective closets, next to which stands the time that measures our life, both beginning and end, and the choices that we make that determine if that time is worthy or wasted, a life of promise or a life of despair.

Doctor Who - Companion Chronicles, The Guardian of the Solar System starring Jean MarshBut what if you could change one of those choices?

Guardian of the Solar System is the next chapter in the tale of Sara Kingdom (Jean Marsh), who first made an appearance in the epic The Daleks' Masterplan in the third season of the original run of televised Doctor Who. In the story, Sara Kingdom goes through a variety of events, such as her faith in her leader being deceived, killing her own brother on suspicion that he is a traitor and eventually her own death. These fascinating events made Sara interesting enough to find inclusion in Big Finish's Companion Chronicles series of audio plays, with her character appearing in three connected tales, with the events of the plays taking place between episodes seven and eight of the saga, and involve Sara telling the tales of previously unheard adventures she experienced with the Doctor to a man name Robert (Niall MacGregor) inside a house that seems to have a copy of Sara's mind.

If all this seems a bit confusing not to worry, there is a nice recap at the start of the play that covers all that bases needed, although to be honest it does drag on a little bit, but the story beyond this more then makes up for it.

The First Doctor, Steven Taylor and Sara Kingdom arrive inside a giant clock one hundred years before the events of Masterplan that happens to power all of the Earth's space travel. The Doctor is ignorant of this and is more concerned with stopping the clockworks, which he is certain are evil, as Sara tries to change her personal future by dabbling in the past.

These plot points make for an interesting tale that expands one of the most epic sagas in Doctor Who, as well as presenting a story that has much to say about consequences and cost. As Sara wrestles with both her fate in the story and in the house, it shows her to be deeper as a companion that did not get much time in her first outing, making her worthy to be in the company of the Doctor, rather then a one and done supporting character in Masterplan.

Propped like a few bookends throughout this tale is the ongoing story of the relationship and nature of Sara, Robert and the house that they inhabit and which at times seems to inhabit them as well, and the scenes are well written enough that they entertaining in their own way, even if you have little knowledge of the back story of the two previous installments.

Also there is not let down here as this part of the play has a charm all it's own and the sense of imprisonment and feeling trapped is conveyed well, as is the weight that seems to hold down both Sara and Robert to the odd house that grants wishes.

As the ending draws near, the conclusion is one that does leave you wondering what will happen next, as the climax was quite unexpected and the various questions it poses make you wonder at the limitless possibility's for the next chapter in the history of Sara Kingdom.

The Guardian of the Solar System is out now, and available on CD or MP3 direct from www.bigfinish.com.

New Weekly Podcast

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 04:33 AM PDT

The latest Big Finish Podcast has arrived. Some things never change... but other things do! Nick Briggs, David Richardson and Paul Spragg are back at their desks, with microphones in front of them... But! This time, it's a shorter podcast, but that's only because there's going to be another one along next week!

Yes, the podcasts have gone weekly, at least for the next four weeks. Many of you have commented that an hour-long podcast is a bit hard to digest in one go, so we've reformatted our approach, to give you 15-20 minutes (... ish) every week for the next four weeks. Let us know what you think.

In the first podcast, we cover The Lost Stories Season 2. There are clips and there are also some Big Finish 'Burning Issues' (a new semi-regular item). In the following podcasts over the next four weeks, we'll be covering Bernice Summerfield, the September Doctor Who releases, Jago and Litefoot, Highlander, your emails and there'll be a new competition (as well as the result for last month's).

Click on the play button (to the left of this item) to stream or click on the podcast button (also to the left of this item) to go to the podcast page (to download). It's free and it's... arrived!

The Demons of Red Lodge Revealed

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 01:00 AM PDT

We're delighted to unveil the title of our December release… The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories, which comprises four one-part stories. It stars Peter Davison as the Doctor, accompanied by Sarah Sutton as Nyssa.

"The anthology releases are a great opportunity to get some fresh blood in," says script editor Alan Barnes. "So, as with Forty-Five, none of the four writers have contributed to the main Doctor Who range before now. Not that it's a gentle breaking-in – I think in some ways, it's harder to write a neat, perfectly self-contained 25-minute episode than it is a whole four-parter. There's no room to hide!"

The Demons of Red Lodge is by DWM journalist Jason Arnopp – who, you may not know, has actually written several short horror films on the quiet! And this is another one: a spooky story set in 17th century Suffolk.

The Entropy Composition is by Rick Briggs, who was selected through the New Writers' Opportunity in January.

"It's all about a deadly Prog Rock symphony – like there's any other kind! I loved the fact that Rick had managed to give his story a fantastic sense of scale, despite the restrictions of the 25-minute format."

The third story, Doing Time, is by William Gallagher.

"It's basically 'The Doctor goes to jail' – with shades of Porridge, Cool Hand Luke and The Shawshank Redemption!" says Barnes.

Finally, we have Special Features by John Dorney, who wrote the massively well-received Companion Chronicle Solitaire.

"I can't say a lot about this," teases the script editor, "other than it has 'Dr John Smith' contributing to a DVD commentary for a cult horror movie of the 1970s... and it's probably one of the most technically demanding scripts we've ever attempted."
