| Posted: 19 Aug 2010 05:43 PM PDT The Doctor has, many times, been called upon to save all manner of beings from various tricky situations but never has he saved Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans from looking a bit stupid, until now! Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have stepped into the breach by agreeing to appear on wallpaper twee-a-thon The One Show after producers failed to book any guests for his debut show. Evans, who lets not forget was once married to Billie Piper, the sly dog, was announced as the Friday night host of the BBC consumer show last April, and presents his first edition with Alex Jones tomorrow. However, according to Kasterborous' favourite publication The Sun, (which you can read by not clicking here) no guests had been confirmed by as late as yesterday, leading to frantic last minute calls to PR Companies, Agents and Billy Zane (who he? -Ed). One agent said:
A master of understatement, a One Show insider described the situation as 'tense'. Leading to good old Smith & Gillan to fly in and save the day. Hurrah! Now none of this would have happened if the BBC would have agreed to my One Show replacement The Cricket Bat and Whistle Hour, featuring a Cricket Bat… and a Whistle… for an hour… interviewing guests… It could've worked. | Posted: 19 Aug 2010 06:26 AM PDT They've take on all the competition, exterminated them if you will and now resting proudly on a plinth of their fallen foes; ladies and gentlemen the greatest monsters in Sci-Fi film and television history – the Daleks!
They also retained the bragging rights over their rivals the Cybermen, who bruised and bloodied, only survived long enough to be classified 13th. Among those that beat the Cybermen were Gizmo from the Gremlins franchise (who came 7th) by technical knock-out. Other victims included the titular Aliens from the Alien films (who came 3rd), Gollum from The Lord of the Rings (who came 5th) and the Borg from Star Trek (who assimilated the whole group until they were penalised by judges and dropped down to 11th). All their next of kin have been notified. Having won their catagory, the Daleks now go on to face the winners of 9 other catagories in a vote-off, where you, yes you, will be asked to vote in The Ultimate Best SF or Fantasy Character Ever poll in celebration of SFX's 200th issue which hits the shops next Wednesday. You can vote by squashing this word and poking it with your arrow key. Doctor Who will return to BBC 1 this Christmas for a one off special followed by the new series in 2011. (via SFX)

| Posted: 18 Aug 2010 11:55 PM PDT The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine has revealed the names of other cast members from the 2010 Christmas episode, which also features Michael Gambon, Katherine Jenkins and Danny Horn.
Laurence Belcher (Little Dorrit) and Leo Bill (Steven Moffat's 2007 series Jekyll) will appear opposite Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the Doctor and Amy, while Micah Balfour (of The Bill) and Pooky Quesnel (Criminal Justice, EastEnders) will also feature in the festive episode. Bailey Pepper (Guess with Jess) will also appear. The episode has been labelled "Father Who" although in truth the title is yet to be revealed – it is worth bearing in mind however that Toby Haynes will be directing Steven Moffat's "most Christmassy Christmas" script; Haynes previous directed The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.
| Toby Hadoke’s Now I Know My BBC Posted: 18 Aug 2010 11:14 PM PDT There can now only be a few die-hard Doctor Who fans that are not familiar with Toby Hadoke (or, indeed, friends with him on facebook). Hadoke came to prominence a few years ago with his one-man comedy show Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf, the success of which has facilitated regular 'appearances' on BBC DVD commentaries, Big Finish audios and DWM review pages.
Now that Moths is winding down, Hadoke has finally released his 'difficult second album', in the form of Now I Know My BBC, currently playing in the Edinburgh Festival. Having read the title some months ago, I did wonder where Hadoke was going with this new show – would it feature clever jokes about Maggie Philbin or Philip Martin? Would it be peppered with references to Gangsters, The Lotus Eaters, Jackanory, Target, Tenko, Morgan's Boy, The Forsyte Saga, Juliet Bravo, All Creatures, Blue Peter and Rentaghost? Would I be able to nod sagely at witty one-liners about Top of the Pops sets in Carnival of Monsters or the Play School clock strike of 1979? Would this be Moths for the ardent student of all that stuff we old-time Who fans already know about (largely through osmosis, Pixley and Bentham)? Would it, in short, only appeal to Doctor Who spods of mine and Toby's TV generation? Well, no, it didn't. And that, if you haven't already realised, is actually A Very Good Thing. Now I Know My BBC is a delightful piece of work, as engaging and funny as it is thought provoking. If anything, BBC is less spoddy than Moths in that it doesn't necessarily rely on the audience's deep knowledge of its wide subject. Bumbling along like some barmy media professor, Hadoke covers enough BBC output to fill a small retrospective TV show (but with charming authority). They're all here: Grange Hill, The Generation Game, The Singing Detective, Howards' Way (did I get the apostrophe right, Toby?), The Clangers, the shipping forecast, and so on; but you don't need to know anything about them, because Hadoke pulls you right in and gives you everything you need to know. Like the best teacher you ever had, he brings to life the BBC's rich back catalogue, couching things in terms of our modern preoccupations such as the internet or Hollyoaks. That he is able to brilliantly and cleverly elicit sparkling humour from the larger drama inherent in both the production and home viewing of these programmes is nothing short of wonderful. That said, Hadoke shouldn't be afraid of filling in a few more details. When talking of The Clangers he describes Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin as 'two men in a shed', without ever telling us their names. Given that the audience were cheerily nodding along with other such details when they came, I think this would add to the collective experience of those watching 'in the know'.

| Posted: 18 Aug 2010 07:57 PM PDT The results of the sci-fi poll undertaken for the SFX magazine's 200th issue have been announced, and Doctor Who continues to prove its popularity in the genre. The Doctor took top place in the Favourite Hero category; runners up included Ianto Jones in fourth place, and his former boss and partner Captain Jack Harkness trailing in the number eleven slot! In the Favourite Heroine category, Donna Noble was fourth, Rose Tyler in eighth place, and Sarah Jane Smith was tenth. For Favourite Villains, The Master topped the poll, with Dalek creator Davros fourth. Unsurprisingly his creations The Daleks claimed the title for Favourite Monsters, Supernatural Beings & Fantasy Creatures, with other favourite The Cybermen stomping into thirteeth place. In other categories, the Favourite Robots & Androids category featured K9 in fifth place, whilst Favourite Anti-Heroes, Accidental Good Guys And Dodgy Do-Gooders included Captain John Hart (James Marsters in Torchwood) in third place. You can view the full results at the SFX website, and the 200th issue of SFX hits stores next week. | ||
| Torchwood: “A long, slow process.” Posted: 18 Aug 2010 07:45 PM PDT To say that we've got a lot of Torchwood news over the next couple of days is something of an understatement; just call us thefaceofboe.com for the foreseeable future!
But first, the man in charge, Russell T Davies, who spoke recently to SFX about Torchwood Series 4 (see the full interview in SFX 199). Back in February, we reported on two occasions quotes from Captain Jack Harkness actor John Barrowman about the lack of information about Torchwood Series 4. Things looked… gloomy, shall we say, but it seems that this is part and parcel of setting up a co-production. According to Russell T Davies, the next series of Torchwood was proceeding apace!
So – there is a long way to go yet for Torchwood Series 4, which is effectively still in pre-production.

| Posted: 18 Aug 2010 07:00 PM PDT I've seen a lot of superb Dalek cakes (and even a Davros or two) in my short span as a Doctor-Who-cake-looker-upper, but none have been quite as dazzling and realistic as that one in the picture that you're currently salivating over instead of reading this article.
Stacked, an online company in existence thanks to a passion for custom cake-baking shared by its employees, created the cake after the partner of Australian manager Tenele Perkins requested one for his birthday. According to Perkins,
Just to clear things up, I can't take the credit for the rather wonderful "Ex-ter-mi-cake title of this article. The ones to blame for that are the folks at Stacked themselves as described in a report on the cake from Newslite, which you can read here.

As we've heard already, the fourth series of Torchwood – set to shoot in January and air in late 2011 – has a more "international" flavour than the previous series, although naturally it retains the two key characters, Gwen Cooper and Captain Jack Harkness. Starz have been good enough this week to release a synopsis of the series…

Ardent fans will recall that Dumbledore actor Gambon, sweet Welsh songbird Jenkins (pictured) and the unknown Horn have been filming the Christmas special with stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, with Jenkins recently announcing via Twitter that her
Moths was a warm retrospective of Hadoke's formative years, told through his experiences as a Doctor Who fan; its immediate success was largely down to Hadoke's genuine and entertaining love for his subject and his sincerity as a comedian; but, straddling the zeitgeist, it came along at exactly the right time and had a ready-made audience. It was probably always going to be a tough act to follow.
We're going to cover Russell T Davies' recent interview in SFX today and tomorrow, as well as the recent press release from Starz in which some interesting facts about Torchwoos Series 4 characters and background are revealed.
Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are to appear on The One Show, it has been reported today. The two will be joining new presenter Chris Evans on his first show tomorrow (Friday).
And since you're not reading this, I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to tell you that this cherry-chocolate masterpiece is two feet tall, took 50 hours to make, and weighs roughly 20 kilos. It's so heavy that the cake crafters had to design the head and base to be made out of styrofoam to subtract the need of a forklift for transportation! So should you ever meet this cake, erm… don't eat that part.
