Egg-sterminate?

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 05:48 AM PDT

I'm afraid there was no avoiding this particular pun – as you can see, this egg-shaped Dalek is pretty cool!

A Dalek eggHowever it seems that over in the USA, a massive recall is in place on millions of eggs that originate from just a couple of farms – eggs infected with the salmonella bacteria which might jog a few memories for us Brits.

Back in the 1980s, around the same time that Doctor Who was entering its "low period", there was a massive salmonella scare. Egg puns were coming out ten to the dozen – but let's not forget that people were dying from the virus; children, pregnant women and the elderly.

So wherever in the world you are, if you're not as fit as you might be, make sure you cook your eggs properly!

“Marmite on socks”

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 11:32 PM PDT

Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman has given readers of his blog a sneak peak at a few lines of cut dialogue from the episode he is writing for Series 6 – set for a read-through in the next few days!

He estimates that he's currently up to draft ten, and the amusing passage below has been cut since draft six.
Doctor Who

AMY
Is it something people can eat?
(to Doctor)
Shouldn't you scan it with your screwdriver or something?

THE DOCTOR
Why would I scan food with my screwdriver?

AMY
See if it's safe?

The Doctor leans over, dips his finger into his bowl, tastes it.

THE DOCTOR
Some unusual trace elements, smidge too much background radiation, but, yeah, very yummy.

Amy is about to try some of his food… he stops her.

THE DOCTOR (cont'd)
No. Don't put it in your mouth.

AMY
Not for humans?

THE DOCTOR
Not for you. Tastes like Marmite on socks.

While this wouldn't be out of place if it had a bearing on the episode, the reason that it has been cut is that is has no bearing. Which is a shame, because it is a lovely passage which captures both characters perfectly.
Gaiman reports that the script is getting better, tighter and "turned up to eleven" – which is pretty apt. If the rest of the dialogue is as good as what you've just read, we're in for a definite treat.

Kiss and Tell

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 08:51 PM PDT

Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan appeared on BBC One's The One Show on Friday evening, giving new once-a-week presenter Chris Evans something to smile about by stepping in at the last minute.

You can view the clip above – or you can get a general overview below.

With each of the stars looking stylish, converation soon turned to the closing moments of Flesh and Stone – and that kiss. In typical "non-actor" manner, presenter Alex Jones asked how they prepared for the business of kissing.

Smith replied: "We just said let's go for it."

Gillan added: "I just sort of planted one on him."

Amusingly, when asked if she enjoyed it, Gillan replied:

"Not initially, no."

Another topic of conversation was Chris Evans and Matt Smith's previous encounter, when Evans was married to Billie Piper. Smith revealed that they were introduced by "Bills" at a village fete. Much hiliarity ensured when the Doctor Who star explained "Bills" was actress Billie Piper, to which Evans added "ex-wife of mine by the way. I went there."

This classy comment on national TV prompted Matt Smith to shout "high five!"

Pretty embarrassing stuff which marred an otherwise entertaining appearance.

RTD: Old Torchwood “Cute”

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 04:45 AM PDT

Speaking to SFX Magazine recently, Russell T Davies declared that Torchwood Series 1 and 2 were "cute", and that the changes made in Children of Earth were here to stay.

Russell T Davies and friendThe following words from RTD about Torchwood Series 4 and why Children of Earth was a success might raise a few unhappy memories from long term Torchwood fans:

"Children of Earth worked because it demoted Torchwood – they have no power, they have no status within society. From being all-powerful they became terrorists on the run, practically, and that's still how it's all gonna work now.

"I loved the show when it was the Hub and SUV: the cuteness of that, the madness of that, riding around Cardiff with old women saying 'Bloody Torchwood'…!"

So many of Torchwood's initial fans were seduced by the charm of the Hub, the SUV, Tosh's shyness and Owen's "sleeping about" as much as they were by the growing Jack and Ianto relationship.  However it has long been the contention of Kasterborous that Torchwood Series 1 and 2 were aimed not at adults as claimed, but at teenagers.

In Children of Earth, this changed – and the third series of Torchwood worked. Torchwood Series 4 should work too.

Ianto Stays Dead

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 06:45 AM PDT

Russell T Davies' recent chat with SFX has seen him reveal a few things about Torchwood Series 4 – not least the amount of behind the scenes work that has gone into forging a co-production between BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and Starz.

Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones in Torchwood: Children of EarthOf most interest to a good portion of Torchwood fans, however, will be news of Ianto Jones' mortality.

Basically, yes he is.

Dead. So Russell says:

"Yes, he is, bless him. I saw an interview with Gareth David-Lloyd recently where he was saying, 'That's enough, thanks'. Leave him to get on with his career!"

So, the loyal Torchwood servant, tragically gassed in Children of Earth, will remain dead. Which is just as well.

As we've seen with another loyal companion, repeated comebacks just serve to decrease the impact of the first departure (see Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, The End of Time, Part 2).

Perhaps this is for the best.

Reward:  £1,000,000 Recognition and an e-pat on the back.

If you've been surfing the Anglophenia section of the BBC America website this week, you may have caught a glimpse of this Dalek-style "While You Were Out" tag that would be even more superb if found on a front door!

To celebrate and help spread the message, Kasterborous is pleased to announce the start of a national campaign to hang these notes on every door in Great Britain!  And YOU can help!  Got a printer?  Go ahead and churn out a couple hundred of these, cut out those little holes for the doorknobs with a pair of scissors, and hit every door in your neighbourhood!  If every reader participates, we can have tens of thousands of Dalek door messages on the streets within a matter of days!  So what are you waiting for?  Hit Print, shut off your computer, and get to work!

Seriously though, the folks at Anglophenia seem unaware of the image's creator, so if you or someone you know helped the Daleks attempt this extermination, please let us know immediately in the comments or via patrick@kasterborous.com so you can be publicly thanked!  (You'll be asked to prove it, mind.)

Because, quite frankly, we don't think a Dalek could have written "The Doctor" in perfect cursive with a sink plunger; a human must have been on hand to help out.

SFX Poll Success for Doctor Who

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 03:32 AM PDT

SFX have published the results from round 2 of their top 200 characters poll with some excellent results for Doctor Who.

As you may have already read, the Daleks topped the bill in the Favourite Monsters, Supernatural Beings & Fantasy Creatures category beating Predators, Aliens and Cybermen. But special (and well deserved) praise must go to the Master who came first in the Favourite Villains category. Pictured as his Roger Delgado incarnation, the insane Time Lord beat such favourites as Darth Vader (Star Wars), The Joker (Batman), Lex Luthor (Superman) and Magneto (X Men).

The not-surprising news is that in the Favourite Hero category, our favourite Time Lord the Doctor came in at first place! Hardly surprising as he's brilliant but it's worth knowing that he beat other favourites such as Han Solo (Star Wars), Captain Jack Harkness (Torchwood), James T Kirk (Star Trek), Sam Beckett (Quantum Leap) and even Indiana Jones himself!

Although they didn't top their categories, Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith came in at fourth, eighth and tenth places respectively in the Favourite Heroine category.

So it's almost confirmed that characters from the Doctor Who universe are clearly the coolest ever (as if we didn't already know that).

The final round is still to come and so there's everything to play for, the winners of each category will now go head to head to win the title of The Ultimate Best SF or Fantasy Character Ever. The results will be published in accordance with the release of SFX's 200th issue and wouldn't it be fantastic if the Doctor was voted the all time best character.

Go to the link now and vote for our favourite Gallifreyan, he deserves to be honoured!

The SFX poll can be entered by visiting www.sfx.co.uk!

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games - TARDIS

The BBC has today unveiled official details of the third episode from its pioneering series of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games – released on August 27th, 2010, it gives you the chance to explore the world behind the inner doors of the TARDIS!

Executive produced by Steven Moffat, and written by James Moran (Torchwood, The Fires of Pompeii), this third installment of the four-part series is called TARDIS - and will, for the first time, offer fans the opportunity to fly the blue box which is bigger on the inside.

Says Steven Moffat:

"TARDIS is a brilliant, brilliant adventure. It's funny, touching, terrifying, amazing – everything a Doctor Who episode should be. Since 1963, kids have wondered what it would be like to control the TARDIS. Now we're handing complete control of the most powerful ship in all of space and time to a generation of children. Everybody duck!"

Doctor Who fans will soon find out, where the steps into the interior of the TARDIS lead, as the game allows players to explore the Doctor's wondrous drawing room, featuring treasures and artifacts from his many adventures – a location specially created for the game, which will go on to form part of the Doctor Who canon.

Doctor Who - The Adventure GamesThe first two episodes of Doctor Who: The Adventure GamesCity of the Daleks and Blood of the Cybermen – have been downloaded over 1.3 million times in the UK – and with episode three offering the opportunity to explore and pilot the world's most famous police box, it's sure to prove an equally massive draw.

With the TARDIS stuck in a riptide, and the Doctor sucked into space, Amy Pond must explore the secrets of the time machine in order to restore normality. The adventure will uncover the secrets of the TARDIS, unveil two brand new monsters – and allow players to pilot the TARDIS themselves.

James Moran's madcap script takes players on a frantic, funny and altogether surprising adventure which could only be told by a Doctor Who story. With full virtual likenesses of Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, and music from Murray Gold, this adventure is as much a part of the Doctor Who legend as the TV series.

The interactive episodes are executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and with Anwen Aspden (BBC Wales Interactive), alongside Charles Cecil, one of videogaming's most revered creators. The games are being developed by Sumo Digital, and the project was commissioned for BBC Online by the Vision Multiplatform team, headed up by Simon Nelson and is being driven by BBC Wales Interactive.

TARDIS will be soon available simultaneously on PC and Mac from the Doctor Who website (www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho). The game will be available for no extra cost to UK households. Users outside the UK will be able to purchase and download it on the same date – August 27th, 2010!

Users outside the UK will be able to purchase and download it on its UK release date, 27 August.Au

Jago and Litefoot - Series 2 Titles Revealed

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 09:33 PM PDT

The second series of Jago and Litefoot will be released in January 2011 and features four brand new adventures, in which the duo investigates more infernal incidents in foggy Victorian London.

The ensemble also includes Christopher Benjamin and Jago, Trevor Baxter as Professor Litefoot, Conrad Asquith as Sergeant Quick and Lisa Bowerman as Ellie, while David Collings (Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen, The Robots of Death, Mawydryn Undead) joins the cast as Gabriel Sanders.

The series begins with Litefoot and Sanders written by Justin Richards, in which Professor Litefoot teams with new sleuthing partner Gabriel Sanders, as they pursue the perpetrator of a number of sinister murders.

"Yes, Jago and Litefoot have gone their separate ways!" announces producer David Richardson. "And Jago isn't happy about this at all…

"When we came to cast the third part of this friendship triangle, we considered a number of great character actors. We set our heart on David Collings - and we were thrilled when he said yes."

The second story is The Necropolis Express by Mark Morris, which centres on strange events in a remote graveyard. Renowned actor Vernon Dobtcheff, whose credits include Doctor Who: The War Games, Blake's 7: Shadow and the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me, guest stars as Reuben Mord.

Next up is The Theatre of Dreams by Jonathan Morris, a surreal tale in which Jago secures a new act for the Palace Theatre – but it's one that could prove fatal to the audience... The series concludes with The Ruthven Inheritance by Andy Lane, in which the excavated bones of the aristocratic Ruthven family reveal a terrible secret. Simon Williams (Doctor Who: Remembrance of the Daleks) plays Lord Ruthven.

"And it doesn't end there," continues the producer. "A third season has already been commissioned – and it will be a rather interesting change of style…"

Series two is available for pre-order now.

Colin Baker in Kangazang

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 09:22 PM PDT

Former Sixth Doctor actor Colin Baker has lent his vocal talents to a new audio book release of a sci-fi romp entitled Kangazang.

Sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker reads KangazangThe triple CD set, released by Candy Jar Books, features not only Baker providing a multitude of voices but also up and coming Welsh actress Claire Cage who has appeared in the Torchwood episode Sleeper, deputised for Zoe Wanamaker during The End of the World studio recordings and has also been in Sherlock! The plot for Kangazang is very Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy-esque:

"When life's problems get you down, a good way to escape the troubles is to take a holiday. The further away, the better. Troubled Earthman and Kebab-lover Jeff Spooner is having a bad time. His fiancĂ© found love in the arms of the local vicar, and she dumped him. Plus she wants the £50 he owes her back. And to make matters worse, he seems to be mocked by the sounds of 'I Should Be So Lucky' and 'Don't Worry, Be Happy'. Fortunately, help and hope comes in the guise of Ray, Jeff's eccentric but likeable barber. A man with a plan.

"A man hard to understand. A man from Kangazang! Together, this unlikely pair of heroes set off to see the sights, find a decent pub, and more importantly, save the entire universe, aided by a tribe of warrior spacehoppers, in a spacecraft made of human hair."

If you buy the audio book, you also get exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, within which Colin discusses his time on Doctor Who, his love of Sci-Fi and also talks about Kangazang itself:

"Kangazang! coincides with my type of humour. It's a bit undergrad in parts – but it made me laugh and its got heart. I like all that."

The audio version of Kangazang is based on a book written by Terry Cooper, who has nothing but praise for Baker:

"I knew straight away that I wanted Colin. With a long career in both science fiction and audio books, he is a real professional who totally understands the genre. He exceeded my expectations and really brought the script to life. For a guy to perform for 9 to 10 hours in the studio, and keep his energy going is something I could never do.

"I asked Colin if I could do some voices as well and he was totally up for that, which proves that he doesn't have an ego and is just a great person."

So if you're a fan of Colin Baker or even if you're not, Kangazang will have something to offer everyone.

You can find out how to order Kangazang by visiting www.kangazang.co.uk today.

For those of you who would like to see Colin Baker tread the boards, he's currently appearing in an Inspector Morse adventure called House of Ghosts at Richmond theatre.
